Serpent and the Throne

Rate this book
In Fedosian court, love is deadlier than war.

Of the nine great houses of Fedosia, nine houses of alchemy, none hate each other more than the Red Shields and the White Guards. The queen is a Shield, the archmage a Guard, and bad blood has been brewing for a century.

Sofia is a Guard, wed to a count twice her age with three stepdaughters who despise her. Forbidden from leaving the house, she spends her days speaking to her stuffed macaw and playing with the shadows. But all changes when the count receives a summons from the queen, requiring all nobility of Fedosia to attend the prince’s birthday.

Fedosia is vast, and Sofia travels to the capital with the count and his daughters—an adventure of a lifetime, and she’s excited.

The prince is strange, and the throne has its secrets, but true trouble begins when Sofia falls for Aleksei, the captain of the Imperial Sentinels and the queen’s nephew. He’s ten years younger, and worse, he’s a Shield.

The archmage is furious, the Royal Cup ends in blood and fire, the count turns up dead, and dark magic sparks war between the houses. As the great families draw their blades, Sofia runs away with Aleksei, but they don’t get far. Not all enemies come from other houses. Some are much closer.

Serpent and the Throne is the first book in the Fedosian Wars series, a dark fantasy with forbidden love romance.

Content This is a dark fantasy with depictions of violence and strong language.

Disclaimer: I was provided a free copy of this book as an advanced reader copy from the author. It, however, was my choice to read it, and in turn review.

Serpent and the Throne began as a bittersweet love story but then completely twisted into something darker. To start it was slower, and eased into the story. It seemed like it was a Cinderella retelling. Sofia, disavowed royalty, having basically been sold to a poor lord with two arrogant daughters. Finally given a reason to visit the capital for the prince's birthday, her life completely changes. Cinderella turned Rapunzel. Trapped by others expectations. By the end.. Malificent may as well have made her appearance. It defied what I expected while still feeling familiar.

The story is dark, twisted. Fade to black love scenes and gory battles. The only thing missing is beautiful illustrations. There were moments I don't think my imagination did the story justice.

I have to say of what I have read of Brien Feathers, Sofia isn't my favorite character but she is still relatable. I understood much of her hesitation as I am getting older myself. She is aging and having to compete with young minds. She's quirky and misunderstood because of it. As far as the world, it is up there. It honestly reminded me of Final Fantasy. That old world, medieval charm but magic amplifying objects that technology would be for us. A magic system that is based on give and take, corruption abound, love trying to conquer all. Light and dark but it is often misconstrued and not really that black and white.

I feel like her writing has only matured as well. It still had that quick pace told mostly from one character's point of view, but it slows down to provide details that enrich the story so much more than previous stories. As always, I like the little side thoughts the main narrative has. Makes the story feel more real.

I loved how intimate and small Sofia's world felt when meeting her to how it opened up and provided consequences as I discovered more reading through her journey. Her story doesn't end, but this step felt complete. She goes through so much, I am not sure she's ready for more. I myself, will not want to wait to learn her dark secrets.

In Serpent and the Throne, Brien Feathers crafts a dark and intricate fantasy world where the alliances of the great houses in Fedosia are as fragile as the love that blossoms between their members. With a century-old rivalry between the Red Shields and White Guards simmering beneath the surface, Feathers delivers a story that expertly mixes court intrigue, dangerous secrets, and a romance that defies political and magical boundaries.

Sofia, our protagonist, is trapped in a loveless marriage to an aging count, isolated from the world and speaking only to her stuffed macaw. This Cinderella-like figure takes her first real steps into court life when she is called to the capital for the prince’s birthday—a moment that ignites not only her longing for freedom but also a chain of events that plunges the kingdom into chaos. Her forbidden romance with Aleksei, the dashing but tormented captain of the Imperial Sentinels, brings forth the true stakes of her world: love, power, and the deadly consequences of both.

Feathers skillfully contrasts Sofia’s quiet, constrained existence with the escalating danger she faces, showing how love—once a source of solace—becomes a trigger for war. The tension between the rival houses is palpable, as dark magic and political strife turn the court into a battlefield. Sofia’s vulnerability makes her journey all the more compelling, and readers will be captivated by her evolution from a silenced wife to a key player in the empire’s fate.

One of the novel’s strengths is its rich world-building, which blends alchemy, magic, and royal politics in a way that feels both familiar and fresh. Feathers’ writing has a cinematic quality, painting vivid images of the Fedosian court’s opulence and the shadowy forces lurking behind every corner. The stakes are personal yet vast, and while the romance between Sofia and Aleksei moves quickly, it’s intertwined with the larger theme of loyalty, both to one’s house and one’s heart.

The novel is not without its darker turns, and Feathers does not shy away from bloodshed or moral ambiguity. The book is full of shades of grey, with characters making hard choices that leave no one truly innocent. This first installment in the Fedosian Wars series sets the stage for an epic conflict, and while it ends on a cliffhanger, the book delivers enough intrigue and drama to leave readers eagerly awaiting the next chapter.

Serpent and the Throne is a gripping start to a promising series, perfect for fans of politically charged fantasy with complex characters and a dash of forbidden romance. Feathers’ ability to weave an engaging, character-driven narrative within a tumultuous world of magic and courtly power plays makes this book a must-read for dark fantasy lovers.

The Magical World

To be honest, I am a bit confused about the system. There are Sentinels, who are guard spies for the court, but they take money for sexual encounters as part of the trade. There are Shields and Guards who do different kinds of magic and don’t get along with each other. Then there are the Priest mages, who seem to be overseers. What I do understand is that alchemy is the basis of the magic, and gold is used to convert materials into other materials.

Think ‘Game of Thrones’ for a Russian? court. The different Houses are in a stasis until the mad queen dies, leaving a teenager on the throne. Sophie stays at the heart of the action due to her love for a Sentinel. As such, the jewels and gilding of court, the Pomp and Circumstance, are detailed and make a lovely atmospheric read.

The Characters

Sofia is a distressed young woman (mid-twenties) who is in a loveless arranged marriage to a count much older than her, with 3 stepdaughters about her age. She is already awkward at socializing, and the situation means she is treated the same as her supposed stepdaughters: like a child. Her husband and her uncle, the ArchMage, both abuse her physically and mentally. But she cannot escape.

She was a kept child, only able to leave the house once during her youth, and now a second time. Nothing prepared her for court. She is immediately attracted to Alexei mostly because he actually talks to her in a normal manner, not dismissive, nor treating her like a child.

Her chaperone and cousin, Lev, is a likeable drunk, and I love the funny moments between them. He believes the archmage wants to force him into the religious fold, and he drinks constantly to forget it.

Lev’s supposed fiancé, Zoya, has her heart set on Aleksei, which complicates things. Her character is not well described.

Alexei, like Lev and Sofia, is tortured, carving into himself to avoid insanity, as he is forced into sexual situations for the queen, and he tries to protect the younger tsar-to-be from the queen. He has lost himself through all his obligations. Aleksei was assigned as a guard to keep him from competing for the throne, since he is older than the legitimate son.

Romance :
(spicy, open-door, consensual and hold-your-kleenex)

This leads to the romance: Aleksei is one of the Sentinels, about her age. He remembered their one encounter long ago and basically takes charge when he realizes she is too naive and hesitant. I think everyone loves a fairy tale romance like this, but of course there is a surprise I didn’t expect.

I just absolutely love the story so far! But I loved GoT, too.

This honest review of Serpent and the Throne by Brien Feathers is given in conjunction with having received an ARC copy of the book.

I have read one other series by the author and I enjoyed the fact that the two stories are completely different both in tone and character. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.

The world building is wonderful with unique perspectives. I am especially fond of the male courtesan-warriors. To have wives bankrupting rich husbands in order to have many nights with, and possibly multiple, partners is a very refreshing tidbit. One thing that was not clarified though was whether or not all of the courtesans are sterilized or if it was just one in particular. It makes me curious to know more about that piece of culture.

When it comes to the intimate scenes, the Author has a way of giving the reader just the right amount of detail and anticipation. It is a very skilled writer who can say just enough for the reader’s imagination to take over and fill in all the naughty bits. It is not vulgar or gratuitous, or repetitive, and I appreciate that delicate touch.

I also appreciated the little snippets of old tsar-world inspirations in a few of the characters. They were subtle and fun to find.

One thing I would have liked to have had more of was the two villains and their death scenes. Both deaths happen a little too off-screen for a full feeling of closure. The female villain is only briefly glimpsed once before her death by the heroine and all she or the reader knows of her is what is told by other characters. So her death feels very unfulfilling. Though we do get some good-vile scenes with the male villain, his death too is a bit off-screen, and the culprit is a shadow figure that was only eluded to once or twice prior to the scene and was rather forgettable up until that moment. They both felt a bit too rushed and convenient. Fleshing out the female villain would have given her death more substance and mentioning the shadow figure more often through the prior chapters would have made its involvement more substantial.

The other thing I would have liked to read more about, and from the ending of this installment we may be getting it next, is more about the heroine’s cousin-brother, Lev. Specifically the reasons behind his substance abuse. Though we are given a hint of the horrific training he endured and how he avoids his future, both dictated by his uncle, we do not get anything from him as to why he allows himself to become debauched. I am looking forward to seeing more of his character development and history.

Overall, I find the story well-paced, with fleshed-out characters, strong world building, clear goals, and enough twists to create anticipation without throwing the reader out of the story. As well, the peppering of foreshadowing and hints for the next volume are well placed. I finished the story eager to find out what happens next and in no way annoyed with the author for throwing in a cliffhanger so steep it is unbelievable.

Thank you to Book Sirens for the free copy of Serpent and the Throne I received for an advanced review.

I was really excited to read this one as I'm always keen to read more female-written fantasy, particularly when they're not from the US or UK. However, this one fell short for me.

Our main character is Sofia from the Guard family - one of the "houses" of the Court in Fedosia. She is in a marriage she hates to a man twice her age, picked by her uncle, the power Archmage of the nation. On a rare excursion to the capital for a Royal birthday, she meets Aleksei - the captain of the Imperial Sentinels, the Queen’s nephew and our love interest. Unfortuately due to some bad blood between her family and the royals, they find themselves in the midst of chaos and war.

So, *the* big pro of this book: finally, we have an FMC who falls in love with a younger man! Sofia is about ten years older than Aleksei. Rather than the usual 18-year-old falling for the ancient being, it's a refreshing take.

Overall, though, I found this novel confusing. There wasn't enough world-building for the book to make sense, and very little was explained. Take the rivalry between the Guard House and the Royals—we're told they hate each other, but we're not really allowed much of an understanding as to why.

The romance between Sofia & Aleksei is incredibly rushed; she meets him at a ball and they're making declarations of love within 24 hours. I know a sense of suspended disbelief is needed for romance in novels to work, but this was bizarrely fast.

This book could be amazing, and I was left skipping back and forth wondering if I'd missed something - Brien, please, if you've removed parts add them back in. I want more detail! Make the book an epic! I think I'd love the chance to explore more about the history of Fedosia, get more time to feel emotionally invested with the characters.

I'm giving it 2 stars for the potential. I'd pick up the next one if I stumbled across it to see how it develops, but this won't be on my alerts list.

ARC Review:
Serpent and the Throne by Brien Feathers

5/5⭐️
1/5 🌶️

✨Check trigger warnings before reading especially if you are triggered by self-harm and self loathing✨

Serpent and the Throne is a DARK Romeo & Juliet retelling set in a tzar ruled Russia-esque setting (think the time period of Anastasia). The house of Red Sheilds has held and refused to yield the crown as they once had in the past with the other 8 houses of Boyar Dumar, and now the other houses are growing restless—especially the White Guard. The country is on the brink of collapse, and everyone can feel the unrest as houses prepare for war.

During her trip to the capital, Sofia Guard Illivich attends a ball to celebrate the heir apparent’s birthday where she unknowingly meets Aleksei of Red Sheild, senteniel to the Red Queen. And it’s instant attraction. Forbidden attraction.

From the moment the book starts, it doesn’t let up. Full of political intrigue, forbidden love, and layers upon layers of deception—this is a book that will keep you constantly on your toes trying to figure out what’s truth from fiction.

Aleksei is hands down my favorite character. I just want to wrap him up and forever keep him safe. He reminds me so much of Dæmon Targaryen and how so many people misunderstand him and think he has ambition for the throne when all he’s ever done is try to protect the crown and keep his family in power—by any means necessary. Aleskei’s storyline absolutely breaks my heart.

Brien does a fantastic job of giving the plot amidst the world building so you don’t get overwhelmed with information all at once. And the ending will leave you gobsmacked and begging for book 2 (which she’s already completed, so it will be releasing soon)!

Serpent and the Throne by Brien Feathers
⭐️⭐️⭐️

The story had a strong plot and an engaging storyline that kept me invested. The worldbuilding was good, but at times hard to follow because of the writing style. The central romance was also enjoyable and felt naturally woven into the story. I ultimately gave this 3 stars because the pacing felt rushed and the narrative often jumped around in ways that made it difficult to track. In particular, the blending of present-day events with past experiences wasn’t always clearly broken up, which left me confused while reading. Even with those challenges, the story itself was strong enough that I’m definitely curious to see how it will continue. The book ends on a cliffhanger, which makes me eager to pick up the next installment and see what happens next.

The first thing I want to say is everything I have ever read from Brien I have absolutely loved!!

This book was one I devoured so fast compared to most books I read!! I really enjoyed the darker feel to this book, so please keep that in mind when thinking of reading it!

In this book, we follow Sofia, who lives with her uncles as her parents are dead. Her father used necromancy and was killed for it, in which she's reminded all the time of just who her father was. She was basically sold off to some lowly lord to be his new bride. There is a huge rivalry between Sofia's family, the White Guard, and the Red Shields, which is a century old rivalry.

Things start to change for Sofia and the little world she knew when she met the captain of the Imperial sentinels named Aleksei. There are some big twists and dark moments that happen the further we read into the story. We have a very interesting magic system, and the world this is in is so wonderful. I am excited to see more of it in book 2!

Sofia was a very relatable character, though her world has been so small for her entire life. She ends up going through a lot, which opens her world a lot. I am excited to see more of her dark side in book 2! We have a war starting to break out, but also other things coming into play at the same time.

I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review! Honestly, I am ready to start book 2 now! Thank you so much, Brien, and book sirens!

Review for Serpent and the Throne: Fedosian Wars, Book 1 - 2.5/5

I wanted to like Serpent and the Throne, but it didn’t quite hit the mark for me. The dynamic between the female lead and male lead felt off, particularly with how she seemed to baby him at times despite their intimacy—it just didn’t sit well, particularly knowing the age gap. I also struggled with the world-building, especially trying to keep track of the different houses like the shields and guards. It became a bit overwhelming, and I found myself skimming through sections to get to the end.

As for Aleksei, I've entered my era of morally grey male leads, so his tenderness just missed the bar for me, though I’m sure he’ll appeal to readers who appreciate that softer side.

At the start, I sympathized with Sofia’s situation—she’s stuck in a marriage she loathes to a man who’s twice her age, chosen by her uncle, the nation’s Archmage. But what lost me was how quickly she seemed to fall for someone she barely knew. Their feelings got muddled so fast after a single kiss that it came across more as confusion than true love, which made it hard for me to connect with her character.

While I appreciate receiving the ARC, this book just doesn’t seem to be for me. Thanks to Brien Feathers for the opportunity, but I think it’s more suited to readers who enjoy a more intricate and protective relationship dynamic.

Disclaimer: I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily to share my honest opinion.

Trigger warning: if violence, abuse/assault trigger you in anyway this is not the book for you

I wasn’t really sure where this was going at first, and had a lot of unanswered questions but the last few chapters wrapped the story into a very interesting but messy little package. This series could go in many directions and I am intrigued to find out which direction the author will chose.

Sofia’s and Aleksei’s relationships with the people around them are vastly different from one person to the next. Quite different between each other yet there is something deeply relatable for the reader. Each of them has an unfulfilled hole in their heart that is just waiting for the right fit, whether they realize it or not. However the right fit is the wrong option in their families eyes. A very Romeo and Juliet situation. Whether they can overcome their families distain and hatred is yet to be seen and undoubtedly will be unraveled in this series. Can their relationship survive everything they have endured? The hopeless romantic would say yes but with everything going on I’m not sure how this will play out. I’m hooked and I can’t wait to see how this goes.

It's always easier to review an amazing book than a book that was just not it for me. So what was it that made me not like this book.

I found that the relationship between the FMC and MMC was so rushed and flimsy but it was not only there relationship that was rushed all off them where. I found the FMC very flat she had zero character and was a constant pick me girl for the MMC. The only positive thing about there relationship that was that the FMC is older then the MMC.

I found that the summary for the book was more world building then what happend in the book. The magic system could have used a little bit off extra information because I was guessing the whole book what was happing with the magic and the people that use it.
You could clearly see where the author got her inspiration from with the world but also with the world a little bit off more information off how everything looked I made some pretty big assumptions which is not something I enjoy in fantasy books. Especially when I can make an assumption off what the world is based on.

maybe this more a book for a beginner in the dark romantasy books but it just wasn't for me.

3.5

Set in the tsar age of the Russian Empire, Serpent and the Throne weaves a dark, atmospheric tale. It’s an adult fairytale romance that puts main characters Sofia and Aleksei in a Romeo and Juliet relationship. The book is also a historical fantasy steeped in alchemical magic and the arcane. The worldbuilding relies heavily on court politics and political intrigue, centering on 8 Russian ‘houses,” and the duty bound guards who defend them. Espionage is also at play, as the houses battle for power and purpose.

Sofia faces additional battles due to physical and mental abuse at the hands of her significantly older husband and her uncle. This opens the door for a relationship with the younger, equally tortured Aleksei. Despite these dynamics, I struggled to connect with the couple. Perhaps the pacing made it harder for me to fall head over heels with them. Their forbidden romance feels forced, and even their intimate scenes feel unearned.

Nevertheless, this is a strong start to the Fedosian Wars series. Feathers has set up several storylines with endless possibilities. It’s a real game of thrones, of sorts, and it’s unclear who will win in the end.

First of all, pay attention to the author's contend advisory. This book isn't for everyone. It is a romance between Sofia and Aleksei however, and there are many intimate interactions between them. To say that characters in this book are morally grey is an understatement, in my opinion. I thought the majority of the powerful men, and especially the queen were absolutely reprehensible characters with personalities that if not bordering on insanity, they had already crossed over that line into madness. While each character is distinct and well written most don't really have any redeemable qualities. This book is packed with brutal and exciting action including wars with magical battles, some hand-to-hand combat, and many surprising and unexpected twists in the plot. This book has A LOT of violence which includes outright murder, and decapitations seem to be particularly popular with these characters in this world, so be warned. All that said, I adore this author, so I think this is a fantastic book, which probably makes me a little twisted, and I recommend it to other readers.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

A Dark and Devious Delight

Serpent and the Throne is a thrilling and addictive fantasy novel that immerses readers in a world of political intrigue, forbidden love, and dark magic. The author's skill at crafting complex characters and a captivating plot is evident from the very beginning.

I was immediately drawn into the world of Fedosia and the intricate relationships between the noble houses. The forbidden love between the two characters adds a layer of tension to the story. The political intrigue and power struggles create a sense of danger and suspense that keeps the reader engaged.

The author's ability to explore morally gray characters and complex themes is impressive. The characters are well-developed and believable, making it easy to connect with their struggles and triumphs.

If you're a fan of dark fantasy, political intrigue, and forbidden romance, Serpent and the Throne is a must-read. It's a captivating and thrilling adventure that will keep you hooked until the very end.

The world is interesting with all the houses (and their abilities), the Shield and the Guard, the Shadow figure/Darkling, and their common enemy (which we don’t know much about yet).

A lot of things were happening, and I was a little confused because things were moving fast at some point. Perhaps more things will be explained in the other books? The idea with the shadow/Darkling idea was the most interesting of all.

As for the characters, I didn’t like any of them, maybe Niko a little. I needed more background story and for the characters to communicate better. It was a little frustrating. The fmc also seems a little naive and immature for her age, but it could be due to her upbringing and her other ‘problems’.

This story has potential. It just needs a little bit more depth and character development of the characters, and slow down a bit.

I did enjoy another series of this author, so I will continue reading her books.

Brien does not miss! This book may be my favorite of hers so far, I don't even think I can properly put this into words...this book! With two extremely damaged main characters, it starts slow which is on-brand for her books. Give it a minute and you will be thrown into a world of twists and turns and breath-holding moments. Right when you think you have it figured out she sends you into a spiral that has you on the edge of your seat. The book ending, again on-brand for Brien, is a cliffhanger that keeps you thinking about this world and waiting on the next installment.

I will not give more information because I am afraid I will leave spoilers, get the book, and strap in.

Brien is quickly becoming one of my go-to authors. Beautiful world-building and attention to detail in setting the plot and building the depth of her characters.

OUT NOW!

Thank you to the author for the ARC of this book!

While I did find I enjoyed this book and I loved how it ended, the beginning really made me want to DNF.

I got confused by a few things in the beginning, I'm not sure if it was because I wasn't paying attention or if some of the facts had changed. Or maybe it was just an editing error, but I felt a little lost at times. I thought there was a past timeline but it was never indicated so I couldn't be sure. But also if there was a past timeline, it just drops off about halfway through.

I did enjoy the conflict in here and the main characters and the love interest were great and so right for each other. Also, I felt like they were fulled fleshed out which I enjoyed. Neither felt like a cardboard cut-out for the other.

It also didn't feel very dark, though it is labelled a dark fantasy romance. So the ending saved me from hating this book, but I had hoped for more.

There's really only one word for this book: confusing. While the world building and general overview of the story isn't bad, there were just so many elements missing from the book that could have made it better.

The "romance" between Sofia, a Guard, and Aleksei, a Shield and Imperial Sentinel, is practically non-existent. The chemistry between these two characters feels both forced and rushed, with really nothing tying them together; in fact, if anything, these characters should not like each other at all, but, for some reason, do.

The writing style was choppy, and the onslaught of information being thrown my way was very difficult to keep up with, especially when determining alliances and trying to distinguish the distinct families throughout.

This book seemed to hold a lot of promise but in all honesty, just fell short. I had to force myself to finish it, mostly just skimming the second half. If I hadn't accepted it as an ARC then I would have DNF'd this for sure.

The writing was often hard to follow, it didn't flow and I found myself reading some paragraphs over and over to see how they connected the story.
As someone who enjoys spice, this book was bland as could be, it hinted and touched on themes that should have gotten anyone excited only to just skip the whole thing and suddenly be over. It felt like the book couldn't decide if it was going to be a YA fantasy with no spice, or an Adult fantasy with extreme spice.

In the end, I was just left incredibly disappointed.

Brien Feathers always does a fantastic job in writing a dark fantasy novel, it had that element that I was looking for from previous books. I thought this worked well overall in the fantasy romance genre and had that opening chapter element that I was looking for. It was a great start to the Fedosian Wars series and the characters felt like they were supposed to in this world. I enjoyed that this was so plot-heavy and had that dark element perfectly. I'm excited to read more in this series and from the author.

‘Not all enemies come from other houses. Some are much closer.’
Some things never change…many people are left behind due to misogyny, racism, stinginess, etc.:
‘Knowledge was power and no one was sharing theirs with Sofia.’ But ignorance isn’t always bliss…it could to anything from missing out on life, embarrassment, and even danger.
Imagine what a world this would be if we all helped each other!

Some sage advice from the author:
“Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face.”

Fave line:
‘No point in winning if you’re going to cheat.’

This series is off to a great start and I’m looking forward to more wartime betrayal, drama, and shenanigans.

I am gobsmacked. I have so many feelings, so many words, it is difficult to explain in a succinct manner. First off, the book starts out a little slow, however, once the premise has been laid down it takes off and you feel like you are chasing the story to see where it goes and there are lots of twisty elements to keep you guessing as well as some surprisingly cosy details. The two main characters are damaged, but together they complete the other. If only life and war didn’t keep getting in the way. This book ends in a happy for now and with a slight cliff, but as the author says explains, it will not be long. Enjoy!

OMG this was a marvelous story. It was a page turner and the suspense was incredible intense. I was on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t even put it down literally. Lev and Sofia romance was forbidden and will the darkness take over the world and the darkness will reveal itself to them in this moment. Will the spell be broken in time as they journey through the dark woods. Danger was around the corner and the center of everything that might be evil and dangerous.

I definitely recommend this book and you won’t be disappointed.

The description at the end of the blurb describes this as a novel with depictions of intimate scenes. I do not fully agree with this, as there was a lack of spice and more fade-to-black sexual scenes in my eyes.

The start was slow, and it took me some time to get into the story. While on the other hand, the romance was too much of an instalove story, and I am very much a slow-burn romance girl.

The book was just not for me, but I am sure many others love it and will keep loving the rest of the series.

I will be following this author - her writing can only improve.

This story is a bit dark but still a love story with so many elements that it is simply rich and luscious.

The world building is great, pace is mid to fast but works well. Character development is good and even with the limited POV other characters are developed well and add to the beauty of this story.

I really appreciate how this author handled the scenes and made them fade to black or off page. It was so well written that readers can fill in what ever needs to be at that moment. Also I like the lack of insta-lust in exchange for developed relationships that are not one dimensional.

Didn’t Quite Hold My Attention

Serpent and the Throne by Brien Feathers has an intriguing premise and hints at a richly imagined world, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite manage to keep my attention throughout. While the writing is solid and the author clearly put a lot of thought into the story’s lore and characters, I found the pacing uneven and struggled to stay engaged. Some moments felt drawn out, and I often found myself losing interest before major plot points unfolded.

That said, fans of intricate fantasy worlds and slow-burn narratives might find more to enjoy here than I did. It wasn’t a bad read by any means—it just didn’t fully click for me.

I received this book as an advanced reader copy and am leaving this review voluntarily. Brien has started another good series of fantasy that follows a love connection that shouldn’t be. The connection between the two main characters follows a tense timeline that unravels as the book goes on. I do feel like more could have been written in this book to set up the future books because to me it ended very abruptly with some details of the characters left out. An easily combatted problem, that’s probably personal preference, that I’m sure Brien will fill us in on in the next book.

Wow...what a start to a wild story that combines intrigue, politics, magic, drama, more court drama, uneasy among noble houses and a love story between Sofia’s and Aleksei that sparks so much chaos. Good guys, bad guys, crazy insane characters and secrets trouble to come that were all hiding before things start to boil up. The story starts out making you wonder how unassuming Sofia could spark what starts to unfold as the story goes but it made for an addicting and crazy read that I found hard to put down. Cannot wait to see where the story goes next.

I loved the premise behind the story. What I felt was missing was a little more depth/explanation of the world lore and world building. We are told that faction 1 hates faction 2 but not really given any explanation other than, that’s how it is. I wish we had been given more, as I believe it would have enriched the story tenfold.
I am interested to see though, whether the author intends of using the second book to give a more in-depth look into the seperate factions and the history between them.

Brien Feathers’ Serpent and the Throne is a captivating story from the very first page. The author immerses readers in a tapestry of politics, power, and personal sacrifice, a story that is compelling and unpredictable. The richness of the story is the beautifully nuanced romance that intertwines with the main narrative. I loved the moments of tenderness and vulnerability amidst the chaos. I wholeheartedly recommend this first book to anyone looking for a thought-provoking and unforgettable dark fantasy series.
