It was going to be three stars and then Rayner went and ruined the ending.
So, Delaney and Logan meet at some art thing. She's an art appraiser who dreams of owning her own gallery. Logan is a millionaire. They spend the night together at her place and the next day he's all like "Welp, that was nice. I don't do relationships, so please don't go all emotional on me. It was one night. Byeee." Rude.
However, weeks later he needs her help to confirm a possible Botticelli in Italy. So he decides to ask Delaney so he can maybe get a repeat? It is unclear. The email he sends her is professional, like all they did was talk the night they met. Delaney agrees to go because she wants to give him a piece of her mind and needs the money to open her gallery. (Girl!)
Of COURSE, the owner of the painting is sick, so they have to spend a few extra days in Rome before they can see the painting. He takes her to all the sights, while staying on his phone the whole time. At this point, I would have just left and gone somewhere else.
Anyway, they get closer in Rome, even though she's mad he wants to buy this painting and hide it in his penthouse. They do not seem to agree on a lot. Then they kiss, but she pulls back and he's all "That's good. I don't want a relationship." And the morning they're going to see the painting, Delaney realizes she might be pregnant and has the hotel send a test and he finds the test and is all "Nope. Don't want to be a father either."
Turns out the painting is a Botticelli and of a mother and baby (titled "The Cherished Infant," but it would most likely be Madonna of the Book from my research, but apparently this author has Botticelli paint random women with babies). Sorry, but this is where I started to get pissed off.
Delaney is the one who demands a conversation. And all Logan offers Delaney is money. He'll buy her a house and send child support, but he won't be a father. And he leaves her at the airport once they land back in NYC. So, please count, this is the SECOND time he's hurt her and left her alone. And she's pregnant.
Delaney decides she can't be in NYC since Logan is there and every time she gets a text or a phone call, she hopes it's him. She also realizes she can't open a gallery and be a single mother, so she accepts a job with the Italian back in Rome. Logan is sending child support. At this point, I was honestly hoping she would move to Rome and fall in love with the Italian guy Marco (who told Logan how much he missed his grandfather. Marco gets it.), but alas, I knew it was unlikely.
Meanwhile, weeks later, Logan finally realizes that maybe money isn't the be all and end all and he's actually been pretty miserable without Delaney. So he crafts a plan to get her back. What is his plan? Does he go to her apartment and beg for forgiveness? Does he follow her to Rome? NOPE!
He donates the painting to the MET and then has them invite her to the opening. He has NO idea she's accepted this job in Rome. He does find out the night of the gala, but what does he do? NOTHING! He just hopes Delaney shows up.
"But Logan put those thoughts aside, too. Delaney was finished with him, and he wasn’t about to chase her around or make a nuisance of himself. He was ready to fight for her with everything he had, but not if there wasn’t a chance she wanted him too."
Ugh! You messed up and you're making HER come to you, when you didn't even say anything!
Oh, and this gala is the night before her flight to Rome.
And the ONLY reason we get a "happy ending" is because Delaney does decide to show up. She leaves out a dress suitable for the gala and decides to go at the last minute. So the woman does all the emotional work and stupid man does nothing except ask someone to extend an invitation. Wow, be still my beating heart.
Of course, she shows up at the last minute as a despairing Logan is on stage and sees her come in. So he confesses his love in front of the whole gala and asks her for a second chance and they have a very important conversation on the stage still in front of a room full of people (hate this trope).
And I was done.
There's an epilogue where they're back in Rome with their 9 month old baby and Delaney's best friend they brought along to babysit (she must be thrilled). And I think he asks her to marry him?
Just... Delaney did all the emotional work in this relationship. He did nothing to atone for the times he let her down and instead of working to find her and talk to her, he just leaves it up to HER! So it ruined the whole book for me.
