Review for 'The Ranch At The End Of The World' by Emma Bettridge
This may be the first book that we have read by this author but it most certainly will not be our last!
This absolutely fantastic book may be aimed at older children and young adults with Amazon giving it a reading age of 12 plus but, sadly, at the age of 37 I am no longer classed as a young adult but I absolutely loved it!! I would read it to my 11 year old son Malaki and we would both take turn reading a chapter each. In this brilliant story Emma transports the reader to a beautiful ranch in Wales called Ransh Cyfle Olaf which translates from Welsh to English as 'Last Chance Ranch'. The name of the ranch does exactly what it is called as it is a ranch for troubled teenagers where they get a chance to change by working with the horses that live there and on the ranch itself. The ranch is run by Bet and her daughter Fran, Matty along with a gorgeous dog called Moss. Bet is extremely laid back and puts absolutely no pressure on the teens. Our main protagonist is a teenager called Nell Dart who arrives at the ranch on a bus with other teenagers called Rua, Mart(ha), Al and Zed. Nell was sent to the ranch because she had been misbehaving at school and she is also heartbroken over Sophie who she loved but who made her feel like nothing. When the teenagers are there they all start bonding, well mostly all, while they are at work on the ranch. Nell slowly gets closer to Fran and learns about Rose who was Fran's previous love. When Zed goes missing with the Ranch's most unpredictable horse Gully Nell and Fran set off to find him. Will Nell and Fran get over Sophie and Rose? Will they be able to find Zed? With a storyline filled with beautiful settings, coming of age, finding yourselves, love, friendship, romance, horses, a dog, acceptance and much more what on Earth are you waiting for? This is a lovely story set in a beautiful Ranch in the beautiful Wales (not that I am biased or anything being Welsh myself) about acceptance, second chances and discovering yourselves. I mean as this book was published by a Welsh company, set in Wales and even better is filled with animals it was an absolute must read for myself but also for any animal lovers or anyone looking for a great read. At only 112 pages it is a lovely short read with quick and short chapters which is ideal if you are looking for a book to pick up and read a couple of chapters in your break or read a book on a long journey. The illustrations were absolutely fantastic and really captivating so a MASSIVE congratulations to the extremely talented illustrator Josephine Birch!! This book should be made available in all educational settings as it has a fantastic range of diverse characters who are all accepting of each other which is so important in todays age and times!! The book is written in a way where it feels like you are listening to Nell's story while sitting with her having a cup of tea and a chat which was really enjoyable! I absolutely loved the book and although we tried to limit it to a couple of chapters a night we ended up going way over as we both just really wanted to know what was going to happen next!! I was a bit naughty at times and even read on after I had told Malaki he had to go to bed and although it meant I had to reread it or listen to it again when we read it together again it was completely worth it!! Malaki really enjoyed reading this book and we enjoyed discussing the different themes it covered such as love and acceptance. We both found the storyline to be fascinating, unique, fun, sweet, emotional and intriguing and we were both as hooked as each other! The plan was to read 3 or 4 chapters a day together but we ended up reading the whole book in two days as Malaki kept picking it up through the days as did I as we both really wanted to know what was going to happen next!! The characters are all well developed, intriguing and thanks to Emma's brilliant and evocative descriptions they they all came to life along with the scenery and settings. Malaki and myself really enjoyed the storyline which we devoured in a couple of days. However, if it had been reading it on my own I would have read it in one sitting of several hours as I was thoroughly addicted and invested in not just Nell but also the rest of the gang and the incredible and fantastic storyline and fun that Nell and the rest of the characters get up to!
Congratulations Emma Bettridge on writing an absolutely absolutely fantastic, addictive and page turning book filled with fun, love, friendship and acceptance and to Josephine Birch for your beautiful illustrations!! Here is to your next success that we are looking forward to seeing and reading!🥂

This was a really quick read for me, but I think the length would have been perfect for the younger age group that it is aimed at. I think 12 is a tricky age for books as the vast majority are either too childish, or too mature. But I think this book got the balance just right. The print was a good size, and there were some lovely illustrations in the book too.
The story was paced perfectly, and I could really imagine a group of teens being allowed some freedom within the boundaries of the Ranch. I'm not sure how old the children were meant to be, but I imagined them as 13-15 year olds. I'll admit that being sent to work on a 'ranch' would have been my worst nightmare at that age (I was more of a staying home doing my homework, or going to ballet class type) but it seemed to be exactly what the children in this book needed.
I liked the gentle exploration of sexual orientation, and the hints towards gender diversity, without making a big deal out of them. They were just a part of who people were, and I believe that's how things should be. Hopefully that makes sense.
I think this would be a brilliant read for younger teens who perhaps feel like they don't really fit in.

I'm a little older than the target audience, but I can definitely appreciate a well-written tale.
The chapters are short and snappy, so it will easily keep the attention of a younger reader.
It's nice to see Nell growing up through the story, coming to Cyfle Olaf as a sullen, angry young woman, and leaving having re-evaluated her attitude.
There's some emotional discussions, some fun moments, and important themes.
I'm sure that this will do very well.

This was a beautifully written Book, following the incredibly emotional journey of characters as they arrive at Cyfle Olaf to start afresh and turn their lives around.
I loved how even though the chapters were short, they were both detailed and captivating. The storyline also held so much power throughout the book that kept me turning the pages.
This was such an enjoyable read that I would highly recommend it.

I absolutely love books that focus on people who 'don't fit the mould' !
We decided to take my youngest son out of the school system for this very reason as he just wasn't thriving there.
Not through any fault of their own, some people think differently or learn differently or get more out of life when they're not cooped up in a classroom and yet it's inherent that they are seen as the different ones!
So, when I started reading this book, I actually felt really sorry for the kids on the bus to the Last Chance Ranch - but as I read in and got to know the characters better, I was actually so, so pleased that they had been set free to learn and find themselves in such a lovely way.
I loved the descriptions of the ranch which felt relatable, homely and set on a beautiful site in Wales.
I'd really love to visit and meet Moss and the rest - especially all the horses.
The idea of therapy animals really appeals to me and we see it time and again how animals can pick up on people's emotions and help to calm those with anxieties or mental health issues such as OCD, ADHD etc.
It was really lovely to get to know all of our characters but through the eyes of Nell we also see a blossoming friendship between her and Fran.
It was great to see the level of support that grew among the group and I really wish that there were more places like this and more people like Bet to run them so that more people could access this kind of help.

I knew I wanted to read this book as soon as I saw it was published by Graffeg and set in Wales. I am slightly biased but that instantly makes it a great book to read.
The plot is a simple one - following the emotional journey of a group of young people who have come to Cyfle Olaf (in Wales) for their last chance at a new start and turning their lives around.
The main character in the story Nell is well written and easy to relate to. Her relationship with Fran changes as the story unfolds and it’s lovely to see as they let down their guard and begin to trust.
The short chapters make is ideal for anyone who struggles with larger amounts of text.
This is a great read for anyone looking for a coming of age, mindful story which is easy to read.

This was such a brilliant read. I thought the concept of the book was great. The story follows Nelly, an emotionally troubled teen, who is sent to a ranch in Wales. The ranch is a place for teenagers like Nelly to go and just be themselves and work on their issues without any pressure. She is accompanied by a small group of people her age in similar situations. I thought the way the kids reacted to each other and supported each other was heartwarming. It took them a while to warm to each other and realise they were similar. I found the way the ranch was run and how Bet dealt with the outbursts of the kids was amazing. I really enjoyed this one.

This is a beautifully written book about a girl who goes away to a camp in Wales. She meets new people, experiences new things and has the help of nature to overcome her struggles. I found the comments on her sexual orientation interesting as they don't often come up in childrens literature, so it was quite refreshing to see as it could help a child! The pictures are beautiful as well 😍 while it's a childrens book, I would definitely read this again myself, and probably take it into schools with me!

The Ranch at the End of the World follows Nell a teenager who has been sent to rural Wales as she had been misbehaving at school. We see how Nell grows and how an unlikely group come to actually get on with each other.
I loved the themes of acceptance that ran through this book teaching young people we are all different but that is ok. The character list is diverse so hats off to the author for that.
Of course I can’t finish this review without mentioning the brilliant illustrations.

The Ranch at the End of the World by Emma Bettridge.
I loved the cover of this book. Even though this is a children's book I still enjoyed it. I liked the illustrations in the book. I liked the writing style. I loved the setting of the story. The way the ranch sounded. It was beautiful. I did like Nells character. This was a short and easy read for me. Very detailed and captivating in each chapter. I read it in one sitting. I would recommend this book.

This was one of those stories which started in a weird way however it was a story of teens who had been pushed away and had not been accepted for who they are. The biggest person who needs to accept them is actually themselves and by doing this the group of teens become a new family. Being there for each other and learning to love again without thinking that they will get hurt.
