Archibald Hall (1736–1778) was born in the Scottish parish of Penicuik, Midlothian. He studied under John Brown of Haddington and James Fisher of Glasgow. Hall served as the minister of the Associate Synod congregation at Torphichen in West Lothian and later became minister of the Secession church in Well Street, London.

This is a magnificent, pastoral treatment of the Regulative Principle of worship and its practical implications in Reformed worship practices. Hall was deeply influenced by the Puritans but wrote in a warm, clear style. Each of the chapters covers a different topic (prayer, singing, family worship, preaching, reading the Word, etc.) and is almost a self-encapsulated treatise on the individual subject. It makes a great reference and I refer back to it often.
