I was a member of a book club as a teen and up I remember this being one of my favorite books that I read during the 4 years I was a member. It’s been so long since I read it I have to dig it out and read it again :)
I remember reading this when I was still in High school. I also remember crying over this book and I have this attachment to Ben because of his name!:D
Mom's need not worry at all! Amazing for tweens & teens, no sex, no talk of sex. Not even sexual innuendos, just kissing! First kiss/first love, romantic, creative, clever, funny! I would highly recommend these "love stories" books written by different authors. They're what I started out on, as an adolescent in the 90s, daydreaming about my future first love, 😻 and I sometimes still pull them out and read them as an adult! And, most all of the main characters, a girl looking for love, have a best friend/gal pal like most of us do/did to rely on, and to chat with! My mom loved these for me, as did I!
I loved it. The way Mal got lost in doing what she loved, her feelings and thoughts. Its so honest and pure, and I honestly wanted to know if Ben and Mal would get together in the end, like the real ending. What became of them? and all that so I dont spoil anything. I even sent a message to Diane Namm once, and she said there wouldnt be a second book. She of course didnt tell me anything to the story, so I let my own imagination run wild and make my own happy ending for Ben and Mal.
I can't help but think that this is the type of story that was the high school romance of the characters of our new adult or even adult books from current releases. This had enough mystery to it and I have to say, I had hard time getting over this book. My fourteen-year-old self couldn't believe that there were love stories that don't have a happy ever after! I was crushed.
Cute story. Maybe a little over the top, but it's all right. I'm sure it'll have a bigger appeal on 13-year-old girls who just recently got interested in boys.
