You don't have the E.H.O. I can personally guarentee this. And I can do this because the E.H.O. isn't real despite how real it may seem. While we are dropping truth bombs- Deidra Johnston - not real. Or the Johnston & Johnston Institue for Guessing What's Wrong With People-not real. Diana Johnson however, is a very real author and this is a (very real) book that is a (very real) humorous parody that seeks to answer why so often we wish to escape the ones we love most.
I thought this book was going to be a cutesy, funny read about those of us who are done peopling and want to move to the woods to become a bog witch, but instead the fake condition of Extreme Human Overload also included subclasses such as Class II which includes people described as P.R.I.C.K.S. Who include racists, misogynists, bigots, etc. I don’t like lumping in people who are exhausted by the expectations of socialization and life with literal irredeemable pieces of shit. Also, suggesting alcohol as a remedy for Extreme Human Overload is lowkey gross. But hey, maybe I’m just a little oversensitive since my dad was an abusive alcoholic. I wanted to like this book because it is written by fellow Appalachian, but the references were dated and overall it was just distinctly unfunny.
I am distracted right now so my concentration isn’t what or needs to be to get the full measure of this study. I got enough, however, to know I want to read it again.
This felt a bit too personal. Even though this is a made up condition, I totally have it. Felt just like a web MD article written to explain what’s wrong with me and listing posssible treatments I’ll never do except for drinking. Great book!
