Kate wasn’t expecting a proposal, but when Rob pushed the small velvet box across the table how could she not get her hopes up? Those hopes dashed by a pair of pearl earrings, Kate decides it’s time to hit reset on her life. This time next year, she’ll have the life, job, relationship of her dreams. But then Rob drops a bombshell: he wants to move to America, for work, and without Kate. Shattered and heart-broken, her mum’s “there’s still time, if you get a move on”, her best friend Sonia’s engagement news, and – best of all – her seven-year-old niece Ottilie’s thoughtful suggestion that “Auntie K could borrow Daddy to be the daddy for her baby” do not make her feel better…
Leaving the pieces of her old life behind, Kate retreats to her sister’s ramshackle farm, where handsome handyman Dan is a welcome distraction. But it soon becomes apparent that underneath the idyllic surface, not all is as it appears at the farm – and whilst Kate didn’t go there looking for a new beginning, she might not be the only one to find one…
Incredibly annoying main character (imagine self centred social media type who thinks everyone is against her, when in reality they know her characteristics really well) - well written by the author
I don’t know what everyone is complaining about. I liked this book and the narrator a lot. I do with there was more to the love story but it wasn’t supposed to be about finding love. Maybe a second one could be about them.
So this book is not great. The story itself is a bit rambling and the pacing is all over the place. Some plot points felt really dragged out, while others were just rushed and glossed over. The main character also behaves more like a self-centred 20 year old than a 34 year old, in my opinion. However my main issue was actually with the way it was recorded/edited. There were times within the story that there was no indication that a scene had changed, which in a written format might be shown through a paragraph break or hyphenated, but as this is an audio only experience, the lack of even a pause caused confusion. For example, in one chapter, the protagonist is talking to her friend on the phone and then (seemingly) mid-conversation starts talking to another character who’d just walked in the room. It took me half of that dialogue to realise the scene had changed as there wasn’t even a short beat in between the two. I just thought she was being really rude, ignoring her friend on the phone, which to be honest, didn’t seem that out of character. Anyway, there are definitely other audible originals that I’ve enjoyed more. It’s short and satisfying enough to have on in the background, but not a must-read by any stretch.
I started this book with low expectations, just expecting something light and not-very-intelligent. But this was actually such a hard book to finish, I found it so hard to find anything interesting or original in the story.
Described as a “Romantic Comedy”, “Funny”, and “Witty” book, this book had none of that. The main character was as plain as porridge, and there was barely any romance. All of the characters fell flat and there were no redeeming qualities I could find. I couldn’t even tell you what the plot was supposed to be until the very end.
Possibly the most boring book I’ve read this year. I’d avoid it.
This book was a bit of a downer and a bit boring if I'm being totally honest.
Kate is the heroine that hasn't succeeded yet. She hasn't got the dream job, the dream relationship or the dream life and she's waiting for the right man to achieve all three.
In all areas of her life she's dissatisfied and until she's broken up with by the man who patently takes her for granted, she refuses to see it.
She's quite a difficult character to like and doesn't really appear to grieve much over the relationship.
A very small portion of the book is dedicated to the farm and the rest is watching her try to ignore her failed relationship and embrace it at the same time whilst simultaneously having a break down.
If the moral of the story had been to use a break up to find yourself I could understand.
But her reset isn't a reset it's a retreat and within two weeks of being there she had found her dream life and solved all of her problems.
It just seemed a bit of a mess and unclear as to what it was trying to say.
It dragged a lot in the beginning and didn’t really get going for ages. Just enough happening to keep a slight interest. Could her boyfriend really be so awful and if so, why had she stayed? Ditto with slimey and patronising new boss. Kate really needed a kick in the proverbial. Mildly amusing glimpses of family life but sometimes just cringey. I did finish it though so it must have had something going for it!!!
Nothing to read here, I hung in there hoping it would pick up. I chose this book as a palate cleanse from my normal genre as it was described as a romantic comedy, funny and witty but it definitely had none of that. After a few hours of listening I just couldn't do it anymore and actually created a DNF shelf to add it to. The main character is self centered and comes off as too good for everything. The book was a bit of downer and even the narrator sounded depressed reading it.
I just never got into it. It felt slow and could have gotten the same story in half the time. Gave me some hallmark vibes but also not as good as Hallmark (weird I know). I left wondering about most of the plot points and it seemed like they “resolved” quickly but not really at all.
The audiobook is read in a British accent so that was a great experience. Besides that, don’t recommend.
The book was okay. I found her journey quite personal, and I thought I’d enjoyed it more if the blurb was different. It hint that a love story (with a man) is coming, and that doesn’t happen almost until the end. If instead of that, it hinted a journey of self discovery and self love, I think I’d ranked it 4 ⭐️
This book was good for what it was. Light-hearted, easy listening and free on Audible. Liked the voice actress and listened to the book over a few days. A great option as pallet cleanser between heavier books.
I went in expecting this to be more of a romance so i always felt like i was waiting for the romance plot to come from round the corner. A decent listen for sure but i don’t think i was ever particularly invested In this book.
Listened via audiobook. This story is way too slow to progress. It could be so much better with quicker progression. The romance that’s hinted at in the description only happens in the last 10% of the book and it’s basically non existent.
At some point I stopped bothering going back to listen to this and now, despite only starting it two weeks ago, I can barely remember anything that happened in it anyway.
I went back and forth between 2 and 3. Decided on 2 because the main female lead was whiny and self centered. Light and predictable and a bit rambling.
