Abigail Parker just wants to get through the holidays, but fate has other plans...
After a year of unexpected twists, Abigail finds herself in the small town of Sugarville Grove, Vermont, as the guardian of her late cousin’s two young children. Leaving behind her bustling city life and dream job at a veterinary practice, Abigail’s only goal is to adjust to her new responsibilities and figure out how to be the mother they need. Falling for her rugged, no-nonsense neighbor is definitely not part of the plan.
Luke Hayes has his hands full raising his lively four-year-old daughter, Lily, while managing his family’s maple syrup farm. With his heart still scarred from being abandoned by Lily’s mother, Luke has sworn off romance. But when a broken fence and a mischievous dog bring Abigail into his life, he starts to wonder if maybe love isn’t as far out of reach as he thought.
As the holiday lights sparkle and the snow falls, Abigail and Luke find themselves drawn together, despite their differences. But with Abigail adjusting to her new life and Luke determined to protect his heart, it will take more than a little Christmas magic to bring them together.
Welcome to Sugarville Grove, where holiday charm, second chances, and unexpected romance are always in the air. Life is sweet in Sugarville Grove!
Tess Thompson Romance...hometowns and heartstrings.
Tess Thompson is the USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author of contemporary and historical Romantic Women’s Fiction with over 60 published titles. When asked to describe her books, she could never figure out what to say that would perfectly sum them up until she landed on, Hometowns and Heartstrings.
She’s married to her prince, Best Husband Ever, and is the mother of their blended family of four kids and five cats. Best Husband Ever is seventeen months younger, which qualifies Tess as a Cougar, a title she wears proudly. Her Bonus Sons are young adults with pretty hair and big brains like their dad. Daughters, better known as Princess One and Two, are teenagers who make their mama proud because they’re kind. They’re also smart, but a mother shouldn’t brag.
Tess loves lazy afternoons watching football, hanging out on the back patio with Best Husband Ever, reading in bed, binge-watching television series, red wine, strong coffee and walks on crisp autumn days. She laughs a little too loudly, never knows what to make for dinner, looks ridiculous kickboxing in an attempt to combat her muffin top, and always complains about the rain even though she chose to live in Seattle.
She’s proud to have grown up in a small town like the ones in her novels. After graduating from the University of Southern California Drama School, she had hopes of becoming an actress but was called instead to writing fiction. She’s grateful to spend most days in her office matchmaking her characters while her favorite cat Mittens (shhh…don’t tell the others) sleeps on the desk.
She adores hearing from readers, so don’t hesitate to say hello or sign up for her newsletter: http://tesswrites.com/. You’ll receive an ebook copy of her novella, The Santa Trial, for your efforts.
This was a sweet romance! Abigail’s life takes an unexpected turn when she’s named as the guardian for her cousin’s children. She takes everything in stride and moves to Sugarville, Vermont, a town she spent her summers at as a kid. Sugarville is a picturesque small town and the holiday setting is perfect. If you’re looking for a clean romance with a holiday setting, grab this one!
I love rom-coms, romance novels, and love stories. So I read a lot of them. This is great fun for me, but it means that my personal "market" is oversaturated. It will take a truly great romance to get more than three stars. In case you are interested:
Relyn's personal rom-com & romance novel rating system 5 stars - This book is excellent. It stands out from the hundreds of other love stories I've read, and I loved it. 4 stars - Oh, I really, really liked this one. 3 stars - This was a good, entertaining book. I'm not sorry I read it. 2 stars - Meh - boring, or overdone, or in some other way just not a good fit for me 1 star - This one stunk.
A quick delightful romance! This is a new to me author because honestly I like some spice in my romance BUT I will say this story was great. And the narrators Maxine Mitchell and Eric Michael Summerer did a wonderful job bringing the characters to life.
A new series written by two different authors during the same time period and the Christmas season. Both can be read as a standalone, but there are some hints in both books of what will be in the other story. Abby’s world has turned upside down with news that her beloved cousin has passed. Leaving her guardian of a five year old and 9 year old and having no experience at all with children she afraid of what the future holds. She leaves behind everything and drives cross country to do the right thing, even though she is terrified she will mess up. But the small town and great neighbors help guide her through all the heartache and learning to be a parent. Her teenage crush still lives next door. Luke is a single dad now and has it altogether. Although he doesn’t believe that is true. A beautiful heartbreaking story that did require a tissue or two. I so enjoyed the book that I also listened to the audiobook and the narration was excellent! The narrators bought the characters to life, plus made my work day pass quickly. Once again Tess wrote a book that will tug at your heartstrings. #UnexpectedGifts #TessThompson #BlueNoseAudio #SweetRomance #SmallTown
If I tell you Tess Thompson wrote it you already know you’re going to love it, right, and that it’s going to be sweet and full of love and warmth, but you’ll need to have some tissues ready. Unexpected Gifts is the second book in the Sugarville Grove series, and it’s 100% Tess Thompson, which means it’s amazing and wonderful and, yes, you will love it.
Neither Abby nor Luke’s lives have turned out as they imagined when they were young and idealistic and hopeful, before real life slammed into them and forced them to change course. Not that they don’t have a lot to be thankful for, but they’ve had to adapt and compromise and put on a brave face. Giddy happiness is not something they’ve experienced lately or frankly ever expect to again.
Luke’s wife left when their daughter Lily, now 4, was barely two weeks old. Didn’t want a baby, didn’t want to be married, never looked back. Without his parents and brothers Luke isn’t sure he’d have made it, but Lily is a sunny, active child who knows she’s loved. And Luke’s entire world; he’s the most protective Papa Bear you’ve ever seen.
Abby spent summers in Sugarville Grove where her mother and aunt grew up. Wonderful summers spent with her cousin Ramona, enjoying the small town, secretly crushing on the older Hayes boy (especially Luke) but when Abby’s mother died her life took a different turn and she devoted herself to school and becoming a veterinarian. Now her life is taking another turn and she’s overwhelmed. Abby is headed to Sugarville Grove again, but this time to stay; her cousin Ramona moved back to there when her husband died a few years ago, and now Ramona has suddenly passed away, leaving her two children, Sophie and Jack, in Abby’s care. Like Luke, Abby doesn’t hesitate to accept the responsibility and vows to herself to do her best, but how on earth is she going to raise a nearly-ten-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy who lost both their parents. Who have no other family in the world except Abby. Somehow she will, with faith and courage and maybe a little help, but honestly, right now she can’t even picture how it will end in anything but disaster.
And disaster, mini-disaster at least, appears right away when her dog Rufus is romping outside in the snow and runs through a hole in the fence and exuberantly tackles a little bundle of – Lily. Luke is instantly angry at this careless woman who could have allowed his precious child to be seriously injured. But there’s something about this careless woman, something that has him stepping back and trying to catch his breath, something that just reaches out to him. But wait, is that a little flutter of – feelings? Nope, can’t be because he hasn’t experienced feelings in a long time and doesn’t intend to, especially with someone he’s just barely met. As for Abby, well hello there, Luke is as devastatingly handsome as she remembers, but he’s obviously become a rude, impatient, angry man. He doesn’t recognize her; he was a college boy and she was a teenager and invisible to him, but that’s just as well. Trying to care for Sophie and Jack is her priority. Feeling like she still has that teenage crush – or what is that little flutter anyway – won’t do, especially with a man who is currently infuriated with her.
But it’s Tess Thompson and it’s Sugarville Grove and oh, yes, it will do. Luke and Abby are thrown together again and again and that little flutter starts to feel like birds’ wings flapping or hearts beating or something they didn’t expect and try to fight against. The Hayes family was close to Ramona and the children and are there to help Abby in so many ways. Lily, Sophie and Jack are close and the five of them spending time together feels like a family. And Rufus isn’t actually the child-attacking dog Luke was worried about!
Unexpected Gifts moves smoothly along, molding these two lost adults and three precious children into something wonderful. Luke and Abby are nudged along, change happens, and maybe this time the big changes in their lives won’t be something they have to endure but something that they willingly embrace. Sugarville Grove is a wonderful town of loving, welcoming people who are always there with a hand stretched out to help. There are glimpses of Tag and Charlotte from the first book in the series, Sweet Surprises, and for long-time Tess Thompson fans there’s a reference to Abby’s good friend Arabella, the very same Arabella who butts heads with her “enemy” Rafferty Moon from Thompson’s Crescent Moon Ranch series. Small world. But a Tess Thompson book is always a small world – a perfect, wonderful, small world you want to jump into. I thoroughly enjoyed Unexpected Gifts and recommend it without hesitation. I can’t wait for the next book in this fantastic new series, or Thompson’s next visit to Crescent Moon Ranch which hopefully features Arabella and Rafferty. I received an advance copy of Unexpected Guests. I voluntarily leave this review; all opinions are my own.
Unexpected Gifts is the second title in the duo-author series, Sugarville Grove. We are about to meet Abigail and Luke, two people who experienced having their lives turned upside down due to circumstances beyond their control. Luke married, had a beautiful baby girl, Lily. When Lily was only weeks old, her mother decided she didn’t want to be married, didn’t want to be tied down with a baby, and left both her husband and child in her rearview mirror. Without his parents, his brothers, Luke would have fallen into despair… but family, especially the Hayes family, gathered the wagons and have done everything possible to ensure that little Lily has a happy, secure life and is surrounded by love.
Abigail often visited her cousin, Ramona, in Sugerville Grove over summer vacation. Then life happened, and she left the small town where she had spent so many happy years. Today, Abigail has her life mapped out, living in the city, loving her job at a veterinary practice, until once again, life happened. Her beloved cousin has passed away suddenly, leaving Abigail as the guardian of Ramona’s ten-year-old daughter, Sophie, and her six-year-old son, Jack, who both live in Sugarville Grove. She didn’t hesitate, didn’t question, simply packed up her life and headed back to the town that had always felt like home to care for the children.
She’s convinced this is going to be a disaster since she has had little experience with caring for young children, but those kids need her, and she won’t back down from the challenges ahead. She’s scared, but that fear is nothing compared to what Sophie and Jack are facing now. Her big, lovable dog, Rufus, will find a way to reunite Abigail with her teenage crush, Luke, when he escapes through a fence and practically runs over Lily in his enthusiasm to greet the little girl: to say her father was furious that Abigail couldn’t control the large dog would be an understatement, protective daddy is fuming. Great way to be reintroduced to her teenage crush, right?
I loved everything about Unexpected Gifts by Tess Thompson. We met the Lawrence family in the first story of this series, Sweet Surprises by Clara Pines, and now the Hayes family will round out the alternating families of Sugarville Grove that we’ll interact with most in this series. The Hayes brothers are boisterous, constantly teasing each other, loyal to a fault, and devoted to each other. There are so many layers to this family, and I’m going to enjoy getting to know them all by the series’ end. Luke and Abigail are attracted to each other, although neither is very trusting at the moment. Abigail is rather overwhelmed at the responsibility of caring for Sophie and Jack, both of whom are missing their mother so much. Luke is reluctant to place his heart in any woman’s hands again after the way he was destroyed by his ex-wife. Yet, they are drawn to each other, and the Christmas season has a few miracles in store for this couple. A comforting sense of family is so strong in Luke and Abigail’s story. Watching walls crumble, feelings being acknowledged, and healing begin to take place for all of them was a wonderful, emotional journey. It’s well-written, emotional, and believable in every sense. If that sounds like your kind of Christmas Romance, then you’ll love Unexpected Gifts by Tess Thompson.
I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
🎄🍁 New guardianship, guarded hearts, and holiday magic in Sugarville Grove. 🍁🎄
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ (3/5) Spice-meter: 🌶️🌶️☆☆☆ (2/5) Audiobook: 🎧 Dual Series: Sugarville Grove, Book 2 (can be read as a standalone)
Unexpected Gifts returns us to Sugarville Grove with another gentle, holiday-soaked romance that leans into warmth, responsibility, and second chances. Written by Tess Thompson as part of this shared-world series, the story fits seamlessly alongside Sweet Surprises while still standing confidently on its own. This installment focuses less on flirtation and more on emotional adjustment grief, sudden parenthood, and the quiet ways love can grow when you least expect it. The tone remains cozy and wholesome, with Christmas charm woven through moments of vulnerability and hope. It’s the kind of romance that doesn’t rush its feelings, allowing connection to develop naturally amid snowy streets, small-town routines, and the soft chaos of caring for children.
The Story
After a year that changes everything, Abigail Parker finds herself in Sugarville Grove as the guardian of her late cousin’s two young children. Leaving behind her city life and veterinary career, she’s focused solely on building stability and learning how to be the person these kids need. Romance isn’t even on her radar especially not with her rugged, emotionally closed-off neighbor. Luke Hayes is a single father raising his daughter while running his family’s maple syrup farm, still carrying the hurt of being abandoned years ago. A broken fence, a mischievous dog, and shared moments of responsibility bring Abigail and Luke together, slowly softening the walls they’ve built. As the holidays unfold, both must decide whether protecting their hearts is worth missing out on something real.
🎧 Narration
Performed in dual narration by Maxine Mitchell and Eric Michael Summerer, and they truly shine. Mitchell fully inhabits Abigail’s internal journey, capturing her uncertainty, determination, and growing confidence as she adapts to her new life. Summerer gives Luke a warmth and emotional depth that makes his guarded nature feel believable and endearing rather than distant. Their voices complement each other beautifully, grounding the story in emotion and making the audiobook an especially engaging experience from start to finish.

Unexpected Gifts is a tender, comforting continuation of the Sugarville Grove series, delivering exactly what readers of clean, holiday romance are looking for. While the story stays firmly within familiar genre lines, its emotional sincerity, strong narration, and gentle pacing make it a rewarding listen. A sweet reminder that sometimes the best gifts aren’t planned, they arrive when you’re simply trying to survive the season.
What a beautiful and amazing read, we are back in Sugarville Grove. This book is the second in the series, and tells the story of Abby Parker a veterinarian. Abby is on her way to Colorado and the job of her life she has been offered. A life changing phone call makes her plans change in a matter of moments, Abby sets off to Sugarville Grove. This story unravels and Abby is going to meet Ramona's two children, Sophie and Jack. The Hayes family is there, Grace and Walter and their four adult sons. Luke Hayes lives on the Hayes farm with his four year old daughter Lily. Abby doesn't really know what is expected of her and she doesn't have any experience of kids. This is a story of life changes and to do what she has set out to do, what her cousin had designated her to do. Luke on his end is very busy with his day to day work on the Hayes farm and also raising Lily. The story is sweet and Abby's life intertwines with Luke and the rest of the Hayes family. Amidst all that Abby needs to figure out how to manage all the changes and do her very best. Daily family life, help the healing process of Sophie and Jack, Abby will have to learn as she goes. Luke on his end has had his hardships and is doing all he can raising Lily alone. It is so nice to see how the story goes on and how both these families figure out how to work beyond difficult situations and find what they are seeking. The storytelling is also taking place during the holiday season, mostly a lovely time of the year. The book certainly has happy times and also the way a family works together as family. Abby finds her new life and is in for surprises along the way. The title corresponds very well to the story and I'd agree that Unexpected Gifts is where you least expect them. The sweet ending was oh so good and I enjoyed reading this book from the first till last page. I'm happy to have read this book and the theme is linked to the first in the series, I'm now a fan of Sugarville Grove! Charlotte N
After becoming a veterinarian Abby Parker was headed to Colorado for a job with one of her friends from school when she got the worse call ever. Her cousin who was like a sister to her passed away and left her two children behind. She heads to Sugarville Groves, Vermont to take guardianship of Ramona’s children, Sophie who’s almost 10 and Jack, who’s 5. She gave up her dream job for those precious children who also lost their father when he was in the military overseas. Ramona was a great mom. Can Abby be as good a parent? She has doubts. She’s never been around children. Will the children accept her? They don’t know her because she wasn’t around much with school and residency. Luke Hayes is a single father of Lily when his ex wife walked away from him and Lily and never looked back. He’s one of Ramona’s neighbors with his family. As the Hayes family open their arms to embrace Abby and the kids, they all gather to help Abby. They know she gave up a lot. Abby is afraid but she knows they’re her only family now. She can learn even though she might make mistakes. The kids need consistency and she will give that to them. She will find a job there so as not to leave their home. Abby and Luke become friends, who she had a crush on him when she was younger, they both understand about being single parents. The more time they hang together with the kids, the more their feelings get mixed up. The chemistry is hot too. Will they confess their feelings? Will they step back and let Abby put their lives together first? Will she get a job? Will she come to love Sugarville Groves? Will Christmas magic bring wonderful things to them? Will Luke finally accept that his heart is healing after his heart was broken? These characters are wonderful. I rooted for the couple, and the children who has loss so much. Will everyone heal? Worth the read. I received this book for my honest review. I give it voluntarily
Unexpected Gifts by Tess Thompson Book two in the Sugarville Grove series.
Performed in dual narration by Maxine Mitchell & Eric Michael Summerer
This is the second story in the small town Sugarville Grove series, this time from Tess Thompson.
Abby has just qualified as a veterinarian and is on her way to her dream job when she receives a devastating call informing her her cousin has suddenly passed away, and if that loss isn’t enough Abby is told that she is now the guardian to her deceased cousin's two children whom she hardly knows, Sophie who’s nine and Jack six.
The only small comfort she has is that she knows the town of Sugarville Grove and also the family of the neighbouring farm the Hayes’s as when she was teenage she had a crush on the oldest son Luke.
Luke still lives next door, and now actually runs the farm’s maple syrup business but he is also now the divorced father to little girl called Lily. Luke’s wife never wanted to be a mother and a couple of weeks after she was born she leaves Luke to raise her alone, which has caused him to avoid any other romantic attachments, that is until he meets Abby again.
Luke and Abby are struggling to deal with parenthood, but quickly come to an understanding and emotional connection and with the help of Luke’s family and the assistance of the townspeople, life starts to get a lot easier and more comfortable for the pair of them.
Abby and Luke grow together quickly and it feels really natural, and it's hard not to fall for the children, especially Jack who is a cheeky little boy.
I loved the narration from Maxine Mitchell & Eric Michael Summerer is exceptional making this audiobook a true heartwarming experience.
This is my first book by Tess Thompson, and I will definitely listen to her other stories now.
This second addition to the series, gives us Abigail Parker and Luke Hayes. Know that it’s a stand alone, though references are made to events that occur simultaneously. Abigail has finally graduated as a veterinarian and is on her way to become a business partner with her best friend in Colorado when her world turns inside out. Her cousin in Vermont has died suddenly leaving two kids without a parent and Abigail as their guardian. Knowing what she must do, Abigail leaves behind what she thought was her future, and drives to Sugarville Grove. A place she spent quite some time in her youth. Thanks to the neighbors , the children at least have someone who knows them well. One of them is Luke, a single dad from the day his ex left a 2 week old baby behind. Luke is also the boy Abigail had a crush on when she was a teen. Navigating her new life, helping the kids adapt to not having their mother and finding a new job is tough. Thankfully Luke and his little boy as well as his parents and brothers take them under their wings in hopes to facilitate everyone’s future. But what happens when feelings develop between Luke and Abigail? Will they prioritize the kids ahead of their feelings? How do the kids feel about a potential romance? Will Abigail and Luke take a chance to find love and make a family? This was a sweet, clean romance about family, hope, and new beginnings. I was entrusted a copy of this book by 1852 Media. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Welcome to Sugarville Grove the place where 2 very talented authors, Clara Pines and Tess Thompson, allow you to relax and enjoy clean romance that has this touch of holiday magic. While this is a series, they can be read as individual books or in order, the choice is all up to you. This is the 2nd book of the series and will capture your heart.
Abigail Parker was enjoying her amazing dream job working at a veterinary practice and living in the city. When tragedy struck and she quickly became the guardian of her cousin’s 2 children in Sugarville Grove all she wanted to do was work on getting their lives back in some sort of order. What she wasn’t expecting though was that her next door neighbor would be the grown up handsome version of the boy she had a crush on years ago and his 4 year old daughter was a bundle of energy.
Luke Hayes is trying to do 2 things, run the family maple syrup farm and try to manage his 4 year old daughter who can be like a tornado sometimes. His heart was broken by his daughter’s mother years ago and so falling in love again was the farthest thing from his mind. Then someone from the past showed up in his life again and he realized maybe love wasn’t so bad after all. Now can they work things out during the holiday season, with a sprinkle of that holiday magic.
Thanks to 1852 Media and Tess Thompson for an ARC of this book for my honest opinion.
Unexpected Gifts (Sugarville Grove Book 2) By: Tess Thompson
5 Stars
As if I didn't love Sugarville Grove already, this book made me fall in love all over again. Luke Hayes helps run his family maple syrup business. If that wasn't hard enough, he is also a single father to four year old Lily. He meets his newest neighbor, Abby, after her dog causes some trouble. When first meeting her, he could never imagine what would come next.
When Abby got the call about her cousin Ramona, she changed all her plans and headed right for Sugarville Grove. Just finishing medical school and leaving a job as a vet, she knew this would be the biggest change of her life. Now, alone with 2 kids, no job, and a falling down house, Abby knows her future will never be the same again.
Together, Luke and Abby, and of course all the kids, bring magic to these pages. Through tragedy can come beauty. This story shows the tragedy, but it highlights all the positives so well. Together with the whole of Sugarville Grove, work to make it the best holiday season for the kids and for themselves. It was truly magical reading this story as well as book 1. I love this small Christmas town. I love the small quirks of tradition and the warm feeling I get when reading. Sugarville Grove is a magical little town that will warm your heart and bring you to tears. Just remember the tissues. 😀
Sugarville Grove, Book 2 By Tess Thompson Performed in dual narration by Maxine Mitchell & Eric Michael Summerer
Unexpected Gifts is an emotional and uplifting small-town romance that truly highlights the meaning of found family. Abby Parker’s life is turned upside down when her best friend unexpectedly passes away, leaving Abby as the guardian of her two children. Already grieving and overwhelmed, Abby must now learn how to navigate motherhood overnight.
Luke Hayes is a divorced single father raising his young daughter after her mother walked away shortly after her birth. Abby and Luke don’t get off to the best start, but as their lives continue to intertwine, they must decide whether they can overcome grief, misunderstandings, and fear to create something lasting.
Once again, Sugarville Grove shines as a community that rallies around its own, perfectly capturing the idea that “it takes a village.” The emotional growth of both families is handled with care and heart.
The narration is outstanding. Maxine Mitchell delivers a powerful performance as Abby, conveying her determination, grief, and fierce love for the children in her care. Eric Michael Summerer portrays Luke with warmth and sincerity, embodying a protective and loving father who would do anything for his daughter.
This story is both moving and comforting, with excellent narration to match. Don’t miss this one. ⭐ 5/5 for both story and narration
It's classic Tess Thompson at Christmas, tugging at the heartstrings with a festive backdrop. Small towns are her specialty. I felt Abigail's deep angst as she came to the rescue of her cousin's orphaned children. I felt Luke's loneliness while raising his daughter without her mother. We're taken deep into their thoughts and inner conflict as they both try to navigate new life situations. And while it may be an instant attraction, it's a nice slow burn of a love story that feels real.
This book is the second installment of a four-book series penned by Tess Thompson and Clara Pines, taking place in Sugarville Grove. The two books are independent of each other in the sense that you don't have to read one to understand the other. But you will have nods to characters in Clara's book. And in another classic Tess Thompson move, there are links to other towns in her other series - a sort of Tess multiverse, if you will. I always love stumbling upon the Easter eggs.
So overall, this is another feel-good, clean love story that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy. You may even shed a little tear here and there - in a good way!
Each author has one more book planned for this series, coming out in a couple of months. I can't wait to see what else unfolds in Sugarville Grove!
I received a requested review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Unexpected Gifts Sugarville Grove #2 By Tess Thompson Narrated by Maxine Mitchell, Eric Michael Summerer
Sugarville Grove is up to matchmaking again! This town has the Christmas magic and this time, Abigail and Luke find themselves falling in love. Abigail has moved to town under tragic circumstances. Her best friend passed away and now she has custody of her two children. Getting organized, finding a job and helping the kids find their new normal, she has her hands full. Luke's dog knows what he needs, and meeting Abigail was the plan. Or was it? Luke hasn't looked for romance, he was burned by his daughter Lily's mother, but this chance meeting has his heart pounding. Where does it all lead? I loved getting to know some more of the town, coming together and the romance where he falls first had my heart. Loved it!
Maxine Mitchell and Eric Michael Summerer told this story and from the start I was all in. Their voices are perfect as Abigail and Luke. Mitchell is Abigail, and her ability to dive into her head as she learns her way in her new life is spot on. Summerer finds Luke's heart and let's it loose. The warmth in his voice and the love that shines through is magic. Loved their performance.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Book Review | Unexpected Gifts by Tess Thompson 🎧 Audiobook: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Unexpected Gifts is such a sweet, comforting romance that left me with a big smile on my face. Tess Thompson delivers a warm, small-town love story that feels cozy, hopeful, and full of heart. It’s an interconnected standalone, so you can easily enjoy it on its own while still getting those fun “oh, I know them!” moments from the larger world. Tropes & vibes you’ll love: Small-town charm Slow-burn romance Second chances Found family feels Gentle, heartfelt love The romance unfolds in a really natural, easy way, with lots of tender moments and emotional connection. Absolutely delightful. The narrators adds so much warmth and personality, making the characters even more lovable and the story even more immersive. It truly shines in audio and earned every bit of those 5 stars. If you’re in the mood for a hopeful, uplifting romance with small-town vibes and lovable characters, Unexpected Gifts is a wonderful choice—especially if you listen to it. 💖📖🎧
Sweet and caring story of tragedy that soon turned to hope for the future. One reviewer mentioned she didn't like the God was used in vain. It wasn't, yes God is talked about and faith is woven throughout the story, but I don't recall anything else.
Only kisses, but you still felt their love building slowly. The kids that the h is guardian for broke my heart, especially the 9 year old girl. That all seemed so true to life for me. Interesting main and secondary character's.
One part I thought needed more info was the financial troubles the h's cousin had when her husband was killed in the military. The wife and children of the veteran, would receive monthly money, lump sum from military since killed in action, and Social Security benefits. She shouldn't have been struggling as she was.
No cheating, no villain, no cliffhanger, standalone, heartwarming and emotional moments, only kisses and romantic. If you want to know more about the MC's you need to download a bonus. I found this lacking because it didn't pick up where the main story ended. It picked up 8 months prior and didn't add to the story at all. It's free, you sign up for author's newsletter.
I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you extra tidbits to decide whether to purchase. (ljb)
Another visit to Sugarville Grove but this time is Tess Thompson’s turn. This is single dad Luke Hayes and Abby Parker’s heartbreaking and heartwarming story. If you love the holiday season and Hallmark Movies look no further than Unexpected Gifts book 2 in the Sugarville Grove Series. One phone turned Abby’s world upside down as she finds herself packing up and moving from California to Sugarville Grove to become guardian to her cousins two young children. From the moment she arrives she is terrified she will mess up but this small town knows how to welcome and help new residents. Abby can’t believe the cousin that she spent so many wonderful summers with has gone and now she finds herself as a surrogate mother to two small kids who have no one else. How will she cope and what happens when she realises her childhood crush, Luke is living next door with his adorable little girl……. One click this magical read to find out. I loved everything about this book. I fell hard and fast for Luke and I want Abby in my corner but it was three adorable kids that really stole my heart. This is definitely a Hallmark Movie read and I’m excited for what’s to come from Sugarville Grove.
Unexpected Gifts is book #2 in the Sugarville Grove series. This series is kicking off my Christmas listen binge and I absolutely loved this clean, heartwarming story. Abigail is on her way to Colorado from California to start her veterinary career. A heartbreaking phone call later and she is now in Vermont as guardian to her late cousin's two children. Abigail knows WAY more about caring for pets than children, but she's doing her best. Her neighbor, Luke, is a divorced single dad and runs his family's maple syrup business. Abigail definitely remembers Luke from her summers visiting her cousin and he's only improved with time. He has a guarded heart and is uber-protective of his daughter. She's got her hands full with becoming an insta-parent and navigating their grief. Loved, loved, loved this touching holiday story. Of course, his family is all wild and crazy and in their business. Just the way we like it. Don't miss this series!!
The dual narration was fantastic. Eric Michael Summerer (bestest narrator ever) and Maxine Mitchell (Queen) brought the tears, the laughter, the love...all the feels to their performance. 5/5 stars!!
Absolutely Delightful. This holiday, small town romance is jam packed with love and emotions. Ms. Thompson gave us readers a heartfelt storyline that had me heartbroken at times and soaring high at others. The sudden death of Abby’s cousin, Romona, has left her as guardian to Romona’s two young children, Jack 6 and Sophie 9. Abby is overwhelmed and knows she’s in over her head wondering what she knows about raising kids! Especially two young kids who have just lost their mother. But she is determined to give them the best she can, well once she gets settled and finds a job in Sugarville Grove. The town and its people are a lot like she remembers from her visits as a kid. Especially her new neighbors the Hayes.
This is a wonderful story of family love, the closeness of a small town's townsfolk and unexpected loved ones brought together by tragedy, fate and melting hearts.
Welcome to book 2 where we meet a young veterinarian Abigail and Luke.
Abigail was on her way to start her new job, when she received the devastating news about her cousin that transformed her life around. She has new responsibilities now and she is determined to make due. Abigail has a lot of support around her, especially Luke, who she had a huge crush on when they were teens.
As time passes deep feelings start to rise in both our MCs and starting something when everything is up in the air, is probably a recipe for a disaster but when true love comes calling, there is nothing one can do but accept it.
This story was amazing. It made me cry, it made me smile but most of all it made my heart feel full when everything fell into place.

This beautiful story takes place in the charming town of Sugarville Grove. Abby has moved there to be the guardian to her deceased cousin's two children, whom she barely knows. But she does know the town, as she was there as a teenager and had a crush on the neighbour, Luke. He happens to still be next door, but he has a little girl now. His wife left him to raise her alone, which has caused him to avoid any other romantic entanglements. The two MCs are scrambling to deal with parenthood, but maybe with each other's help and even some assistance from the wonderful townspeople, life can be a bit easier and certainly a lot sweeter. Abby and Luke are wonderful together, and it's certainly hard not to fall for the children. I loved this author's writing and this sweet and heart-warming tale. This is my first book by Tess Thompson, and I will definitely read other stories by her now. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A lovely holiday story. This author is new to me. However if she is coordinating with Clara Pines that’s a good introduction. The story was delightful and the charac Were very interesting.
Amazon aynopsis: After a year of unexpected twists, Abigail finds herself in the small town of Sugarville Grove, Vermont, as the guardian of her late cousin’s two young children.
Abigail is finished with all her studies and training to become a veterinary and headed to Colorado to partner with a fellow veterinarian. When she receives a telephone call that changes her life. Her best friend has passed away and she is now guardian to her children, Sophie who is 9 and Jack who is six. As she travels and arrives in Sugarville Grove she remembers her times there and also her memories of Luke and wonders if he is there and how he is doing but thinks to herself she doesn’t have time for romance. Luke is raising 4 year old Lily and lives next door. As they both struggle with loss, healing, love and life you will cry, cheer them on and celebrate with them. With the help of friends, family and a town full of caring people will they realize they can be together? You do t want to miss this book and will quickly be waiting on future ones. 5+ stars.
When giving up everything actually gives you more than you imagined
You will root for Luke and Abby from the beginning. They truly deserve to find great love. Abby had her dream job within her reach when a phone call changed everything. Now she’s facing a life she’s totally unprepared for. Luke is living his dream building his family business and raising his daughter. But he’s still reeling from the divorce that left him shaken. When Abby and Luke come face to face for the first time in over a decade, both of them start thinking things they never imagined and dreaming new dreams. With three small kids to consider, they tread carefully. Finding joy after tragedy and making a family out of the five of them makes for a beautiful story. Great read for any time of year.
What perfect timing for the Sugarville Grove series to make its debut! The story starts off with Abby receiving some of the worst news of her life and her world turns completely upside down forcing her to return to her hometown of Sugarville which she hasn’t visited in 10 years. Will Abby be able to live up to the expectations of this new life she has been placed into? How will she survive? Who will she be able to lean on? So many mixed emotions are experienced in this book. Unexpected Gifts allows the reader to jump right into the storyline which is set during the holiday season and it is one that I could not put down. I highly recommend this book to all. Thank you to 4Kids5Cats Publishing for an early review copy at my request. All thoughts are my own and freely shared.
Sugarville Grove during the Thanksgiving and Christmas period is the setting to choose for delightfully heartwarming stories involving children and animals! Although Ms Thompson’s book, like Book 1 in this new series, begins with heartbreaking circumstances, the innate goodness of the characters guarantees a happy outcome. Newly qualified veterinarian, Abby, has to make a physical and mental turnaround in her future plans on receiving news about her cousin’s tragic death. Sugar maple farmer and single dad, Luke, and his family help Abby transition from a career-oriented single woman into a sensitive ‘instant mom’ to Sophie and Jack. The author’s subtle reference to her Crescent Moon series was welcome to this review reader who has enjoyed all those ARC books as well.
Another wonderful story from Tess Thompson! The small town and the friendly neighbors play great roles in this book in addition to the sweet love story at the heart of it all. Abby spent her childhood summers in Sugarville Grove, visiting her beloved cousin. When that cousin dies very unexpectedly she is called to return and become the guardian of her young niece & nephew. With no prior experience with kids she relies heavily on the next door neighbors, including their son Luke, her childhood crush and now a single father, after his wife left him with a newborn. These two have had their lives turned upside down, but will somehow find themselves forging a new family. Be prepared for some tears as well as smiles. I loved this book!
