After sparing the King of Ice's life, Selene grapples with the burden of the freshly forged mating bond as she embarks on a perilous journey to rescue her beloved, Dayne. Between evading Nicodemus and his Olvidarian army, Selene unveils an ancient magic, its potent secrets a magnetic force to both the righteous and corrupt. No longer bound by fate, Selene prepares to do whatever it takes to keep those ancient magics from whispering.
I knew this would be an excellent follow up to book 1. Erix, you are going to move to a top book bf spot if you keep it up in the next book. This man had me KICKING MY FEET. When he called her “sweetheart”???? BYE.
I also loved the growth Selene has shown since book 1.
I give this book 4.5 stars, I wish we had gotten more info on Idris, and more on Aeryn after the first half of the story. Other than that though, I FLEW through this book, loved every second of it, and I can’t wait for book 3!
First off, I want to thank Eevy for sending me an advance copy of this book. I'm so glad my thoughts and feedback have been useful to you, and it's been super fun to see how the story and your writing evolve!
I'm gonna try to keep this review spoiler-free! Again, I read an advance copy of this book, so some things might have changed about it; take my review with a grain of salt.
Once again, I'll start with what I liked about this book. I thought the romantic storyline in book two was much improved. It was better developed, more nuanced, and felt more meaningful. I'll be honest: I'm typically not a huge fan of the romantasy tropes in this book (i.e., 'mating,' large fae-related age gap, and related adult content). As I did with ACOTAR, I tended to look past that stuff and more toward the plot when reading, and since I know it's not my cup of tea, I don't really factor it into my rating. I did enjoy the progression of the romantic relationship in this story, though, and how the characters grew past their flaws because of each other and drew strength from their connection, both literally and figuratively. On that note, very minor spoiler: I was interested in Selene's venture into anti-hero territory, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out in book three.
I'm also a big fan of the worldbuilding in this series. It's inventive and combines fae lore with mythological storytelling in a way I find creative. As always, I also liked that this book wasn't entirely predictable. There's an obvious villain, but it's not obvious exactly what they're up to, among other plot twists that keep you reading. It was another quick read for me, and I had fun following along.
Between that and the juicier romantic story arc, I think this book is a solid improvement from book one. I did have a couple of notes for the author, though.
Without revealing too much, I will say that there were some plot elements I found confusing. I struggled to understand Selene's feelings about the Goddess, as well as the Goddess' role in society. In general, I thought this book laid the groundwork for a plot with larger-scale implications, but I felt that the general society's relationship to some of the key plot points (e.g., the Goddess and multi-elementals, among other things) could have been woven in throughout so that it didn't feel so much like a new issue randomly arising instead of one that's been building throughout the narrative.
My other note is one I've made upon further reflection and is probably influenced by my personal opinions, so I didn't include it in my initial thoughts. Medium-level spoilers ahead here: I wasn't a huge fan of the Aeryn/Mairda plotline. I know it advances the overall plot, but I felt like it had the kind of half-baked quality that some of the relationships in book one did, to a lesser extent. Now that I consider it more deeply, I feel like this book (and book one) could've been entirely from Selene's perspective, and filled in gaps in the plot that the lack of POV changes would create in Selene's conversations with other characters.
Overall, I liked this book and felt it was an improvement from book one. I look forward to reading book three! Thanks again, Eevy, for the advance copy. I was eager to get my hands on book two after reading the first one, and I'm glad to have read it!
3.5 ⭐️ rounded up Second book syndrome hit hard 😩 but there were still a lot of good plot points! It just…took me a month to read and almost put me in a slump
Book 2 does a phenomenal job of describing the DEPTH of power between Erix and Selene, making their bond so much MORE. The tension and slow burn between these two really has me BEGGING FOR MORE!!! (Specifically begging Selene to give in already… RTFO) but I personally LOVE slow burn, as this just builds up so much meaning and connection between the characters (obvi)🥰
I have to mention how much Selene has grown in this book as well, she has more fire to her and doesn’t take BS from anyone, she knows her worth and is clearly learning to love herself and learning about how strong she really is.
I also fell more in love with the depth of the other characters. Specifically Mairda (my personal fav), and the most UNSUSPECTING LOVE formed between certain characters… once again, RTFO🫵😌!!!!
The spice in this book was tasteful and had so much passion behind characters I was fr like ✨🫦✨ and got the 🦋🦋🦋 feeling that good spice should give you when reading 😏(not the “oo I need a shower after reading that” feeling)🤣
Lastly, I need book 3 ASAP because now I’m on the edge of my seat and have to WAIT!!🥲
Eevy once again wins us all with her writing, delving deep into a multitude of characters, unraveling them as we read on, sucked into the world she's created. I loved this book even more than the first. Eevy has a way of writing that keeps you entranced and feeling like you're each character as she seamlessly switches perspectives between different ones.
This was written better than the first book! I felt it dragged on a fair bit but overall the story line is ok. This book probably could have been a lot shorter. The only thing that saved it was the slow burn 🔥
Eevy when i catch you Eevy. I wrote a review on the first book so i have to write one for the second. I loved the first book SO much i gave it 5 stars. But this book? It broke my heart in so many ways, not only because of the literal plot but because i was expecting so much from it after reading book one and it just didn’t meet those expectations. I don’t say any of these things with any hate in my heart but with sadness and disappointment. I must give Eevy credit though for being so good at keeping you on your toes. She is so creative you seriously can never guess what is coming next!
****spoilers****
I had really looked forward to selene becoming this girl boss and instead her light was dimmed by erix, learning that he’s stronger.
Don’t even get me started on the bond, selene had made it very clear that she wanted it to have been dayne. yet she suddenly changed her mind without growing a single feeling towards erix? i was finally given more closure at the literal end when she started doubting the bond again like she had done initially. But it’s so strange that she went back and forth on wanting be loved, claiming she was never loved when dayne literally loved her, then finally wanting to love herself after unifying the bond. She was never even into erix, not a single feeling of desire was written about him from her perspective.
And why did we learn erix’s age when they finally did it? I literally thought he was a few thousand years old then suddenly he was three hundred years old?
Selene just wasn’t this amazing, wonderful, complex character that the first book had built her up to be.
There were a ton of inconsistencies with this book and the different perspectives only made the plot more complex and not in a good way :(
This completely dragged. So much happens with zero movement in the plot.
SO MANY TYPOS. It’s incredibly distracting. Every time I got back into the storyline, there was another typo to slam me back to reality.
The insane overuse of the words “sod” and “sodding” completely ruined so many scenes. I understand if you prefer the characters to not swear but I’ve never read that word so many times in one chapter. Surely there are more alternatives to the word fuck besides this.
The overall plot of this book has potential, but there were just too many areas that were poorly written or not driven into enough.
I honestly couldn’t wait to be done with a chapter as soon as I saw it in Aeryn’s pov even though I loved him as a character. It never felt like him speaking, the first person perspective for most non-Selene chapters still felt like her voice.
Some areas just felt like they were being skipped over. When Selene was fighting the wind warriors while rescuing the little boy, she passes out right after, then it goes into Aeryn’s pov and he’s pissed and goes to sleep with Mairda to blow off steam, and then it just isn’t addressed any further and feels like days or weeks have passed by? Really seeing her work with blood magic in general felt passed by, just randomly worked in and out of the book.
The writing lacks maturity. It’s very repetitive and it also feels like the author is nervous to write about sex but still chooses to, which really takes away from those scenes. I would have rather not had them then have the characters repeatedly say things along the lines of “staring at…that”.
My last major complaint is the very heavy need for an edit. There are so many typos, misspellings, and grammar errors. I normally don’t point this out, but there were major issues throughout the book that really distract from the story.
Again, I really think there's potential with this story. But, again, we learn nothing about Selene or her backstory. Instead, the book is a glorified magical reverse harem with a very minor fantasy plot. Yes, this is an adult book but why are all of the characters jumping on each other's bones in every chapter? The author spends too much time describing fashion shows, why do we need to know when Selene or Mairda change into a sexy outfit for the billionth time?
If the author spent more time explaining the magic system then I think it would be memorable rather than disappointing. I think this book is good for a quick, guilty pleasure, read. If you need a fill on overdone tropes and characters with no subtlety, this is your book.
And my last note, which is really for the 1st book but I hope the author doesn't do this in the 3rd book: Stop using "chocolate" to describe a Black person's skin. Lazy.
Honestly I felt like this was going to be better than it was. I felt like the writing was really showing improvement at the end of book 1, but I had some constructive criticism regarding this: This series is very trope-y, and while I'm not always opposed to that it did feel a bit over-done here. I think a chunk of the writing feels very awkward, which is understandable for a new author. Examples of this being overuse of certain phrases or specific wording, modern slang used in a high fantasy setting, and some awkward grammer/phrasing. It felt like there was quite a bit of repetition, and some long chunks where not much was happening at all. I think the idea of this was very creative and well thought-out, but some areas got a bit lost. Our author definitely had some well developed framework! I think overall, for her first venture into writing, this was very impressive!
you mean to tell me we’re meant to love the new MMC in this? Rooting for them to be soulmates or whatever? After he willing hurts the FMC by fuxking another girl after she finds out you can feel the other persons emotions/feelings during it and makes her suffer through that (literally all he did in the end of the 1st book and half of this book is drink, lay in bed and be with all these other women).
Their romance/love is not believable at all because it’s all from the forged mating bond wanting them to get closer the longer they are around each other 🤷🏽♀️ and just because he starts caring about her from the bond, and saying a few sweet words/love monologues to Selene, we are meant to think he’s a good MMC? Idk Dayne was way better and actually sweet and kind.
Anyways the plot is semi interesting but I don’t care at all for their romance
A perfect sequel to a really impressive debut novel, you won't regret reading this! The character development is even stronger and the plot is absolutely captivating. This story has the perfect amount of spice too in my opinion. It isn't overwhelming and it all fits really naturally into the plot, not to mention it's extremelyyyyy detailed. If you are looking for a spicy fantasy book to get lost in, you found it!
The plot is good and the twists are not like other fantasy books so I really enjoyed that. There are quite a few times in this book that are just lengthy descriptions that are not necessary. Spelling and grammar issues were a little frustrating at times.
Dayne needs to get over it. Ynette needs to come clean. Erix is perfect. Aeryn deserves a happily ever after. Selene....we get it, you cry. Idris needs a power moment.
I became obsessed with this very very quickly. Erix, Erix, Erix… I hated you at first. He had me fooled for a while because this man jumped up into top book bf status🤭 The language she uses around Selene and Erix’s bond is so good it gives me flutters every time. I still feel so effing bad for Dayne but if him and Ynette end up together I’ll be really happy for him. At first, Aeryn and Mairda made me wanna skip his chapters, but I love Aeryn so much I ended up just supporting him lol.
this was a nice read but felt slow at some parts. Selene moved on so quickly from Dayne I was kinda like oop. I don’t loveeee books with forced bonds bc it makes it harder for me to truly believe they would have these feelings without them but I still enjoyed!
I also didn’t care much for any of the side characters. Aerlyn’s chapters bored me and so did Ynette’s.
