Prophase: A Present Tale

Rate this book
Become swept away into a world of light just beyond our perception.

Piper Walker, a high school senior, has seen her share of hard times. At a young age, she lost her mother to breast cancer shortly after her brother Charlie was born. Raising her baby brother under the wrathful eye of an abusive and alcoholic father, she relies heavily on her small, but tight core of friends. Lisa, her best friend from kindergarten, and Chris, her longtime boyfriend, help to keep her above water. Along with her friends, Piper’s elderly neighbor, Ester, and her lynx point Siamese cat, Jazz, become the extended family she never had.
Even before her mom died, Piper always felt different. She was opposite of her popular best buddy Lisa, and didn’t enjoy doing what most other teenage girls liked to do. She wasn’t much for fixing up and thought hanging out was boring. Music and nature were her muses. Piper grew up next to a forest with countless paths, one of which led to the high school; the others to myriad of seasonal wonders. Piper spent countless hours in the woods exploring and finding solace in the trees, wild flowers, and every kind of animal. Although somewhat shy and insecure of her voice, Piper was lead vocals and a passionate bass player for a garage band called ‘The Coat Tails’ that consisted of Lisa, Chris, and their close friend Josh. Having never sounded better, they were sure to win the senior talent show.
After a Spring Fling dance, a near-death experience prematurely rebirths Piper to her destiny, for not even she knows who she really is. Her identity has remained buried deep for her protection. She awakens to a dimension where light laden with emotions emits from everything around her. Overnight, Piper and her world are transformed into something radically different. What she thought was real was only the beginning, a thin veneer to actual reality. Universal truths are turned upside down. She wakes to a magical world with an ancient history and kingdoms of races. Life becomes way more beautiful, complex, and breathtaking than she ever imagined.
A menagerie of supernatural and metallic gleaming mythical characters come to assist Piper to take her first steps in her new world and keep her safe. The realm of brilliant auras, feelings, and endless color surround her creating a language she doesn’t understand. She begins a long journey to discovering and mastering her powers and senses that defy fantasy. Riding gravity waves, casting spells, and leaping to exotic locations become her new curriculum.
However, amongst the Eden lies a fatal danger. For centuries, a tyrannical rule has suppressed and strangled the enchanted world she is now part of. A most brilliant Guardian, named Eli, and his council, the Arbitri, have become the only voice. Evolution has stopped. Only Piper has the power to bring about change.
Amongst the unspeakable beauty, unknown danger, and the desire to find out who she really is, Piper stumbles upon an unexplainable, first-time love that becomes the only thing that she can cling to in her stormy and unexpected life. From the first time his voice dances on her ear drums, she is taken by something wonderfully unreal.
Piper now must juggle her two worlds – and disguise her increasing abilities and morphing appearance while attempting to be the slightly nerdy teenager everyone knows.
This story captivates the imagination with the beauty of nature and the celebration of love, life, and light – and the power of one girl.

This was an okay read, with some fascinating moments. I particularly liked the way the author attempted to describe Piper's extraordinary new senses, at times the lyrical writing bordered on poetic, although there was a little too much reliance on similes. The dialogue felt a bit forced - characters very rarely talked in contractions and it felt unnatural and stilted.

It also perplexed me how the main character almost literally turned into a Mary Sue - becoming attractive and more talented - when her special abilities awakened. Admittedly, she also experienced a great deal of trouble and there were many instances of schadenfreuds. Thankfully not too painful to read!

And I have to admit that

Prophase: A Present Tale follows the story of Piper Walker as she discovers a world she didn’t know existed and who she really is. With the help of her ancient neighbor Esther, she finds ways to balance the world she knows and the world into which she must become. She has great friends along the way who either knowingly or unknowingly help her navigate this unique coming of age story. The first book in the Mitosis Series is sure to keep readers searching for the answers alongside the 18 year old Piper in eager anticipation.

This book was enjoyable as a whole. I can honestly say I did not want to leave this book unfinished for very long. Piper is a very three dimensional character with good and bad attributes. In fact, most of the characters seen frequently throughout the book do have elements of good and evil. I personally really like this, because even though it is fantasy, realistic characters keep me engaged. The world which was created was colorful and powerful, urging your subconscious to dive in head first.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the book, there were some shortcomings as well. Grammatically there are frequent errors with quotations and sentence structure. Not enough to take away from the storyline, but enough that I occasionally had to go back to see if the phrase was someone talking or an inner monologue. I would venture to guess this book was not professionally edited, but it still it very well written. Another issue I have with the story is just how complex it is. There are so many elements and unknowns it is hard to keep up. In someways, this helps the story because Piper herself is confused about the vast amount of changes and information thrown at her at once. However, it is almost too much for a reader when we don’t have the external view like Piper does. I could keep the human characters straight, but I struggled to keep the mystical clear.

While not relevant to the enjoyment of the book, I am not sure why the book and series are named after the biological process of Mitosis. I’m assuming this is explained further in the next book. Prophase is the first step of preparation for cell division, so perhaps like it’s namesake, this book is merely setting the stage for the events to come. I do plan to read the next book for sure to continue on Piper’s journey with her. This is the author’s debut novel, so I have high hopes the next one will be even better.

Given some of the issues I had with the editing and overwhelming amount of information, I cannot give this book 5 stars. It is however, much better than middle of the road, so a 3 also does not fit. This book is a very strong 4/5 stars. If possible, I would even consider giving it 4.5/5. I eagerly look forward to read his next book to find out what happens to Piper next.

Piper Walker is a high school senior who plays the bass in a band with her best friends, is on the swim team, and has been responsible for raising her little brother Charlie since their mom died from breast cancer shortly after he was born. One night, not long after being dumped by her boyfriend of two years, Piper is in a car accident with two of her best friends. The near-death experience ignites something inside her, unleashing powers she never knew existed. She now has the ability to move things with her mind, see others’ auras, and manipulate the laws of gravity. She soon learns that she is not alone in her new abilities but that there is a whole world and history of people like her. These people are currently being ruled by an unjust dictator and Piper is the only one with the strength and potential to restore balance to their world.

Strengths

I love the premise of this book: an average girl discovers special powers and realizes her destiny to save the world. It is a theme that has been repeated many times but one that never fails to excite me. Probably because it’s fun to imagine myself as the hero and become immersed in a world of fantasy to distract from the tedium of daily life.

I think M Street’s characters are strong and convincing. I love Piper; she is relatable and able to adapt as her world quickly changes. This quote describes her attitude toward her new life: overwhelmed but still wants more.

“I was adrift without oar or anchor. Even though I was overwhelmed and underwater, I thirsted for more answers.” (Chapter 15)

Her best friend, Lisa, is the best friend every high school girl needs. While I didn’t like her ex-boyfriend Chris (though we’re probably not meant to like him much anyway…he IS the ex-boyfriend after all!), he played a strong role in making me care about Piper. If she had a perfect life and everything was great, it would be harder as a reader to care about her. I also loved her pet cat Jazz. It probably seems weird to love the cat, but he’s one special guy!

I don’t want to give away spoilers, but Piper gains a new connection after her breakup with Chris that is fabulous and made my inner teenage girl so, so happy.

Weaknesses

For a story with the potential for a lot of exciting action, the pace felt….strange. Inconsistent. There were parts where I couldn’t read the words fast enough because it was just so good, and there were other parts where I felt my eyes droop and had flash backs to boring high school history lectures. I’ve been thinking, trying to put my finger on what went wrong, and I think I figured it out. When Piper gained her powers, her eyes were opened to a whole new sphere of seeing. She sees colors in absolutely everything. In what I’m sure was an effort to help the reader see what Piper sees, Street was very descriptive and almost poetic in his writing. Parts of the story that should have been leaping from the pages, like Piper learning how to manipulate gravity and jump up toward the stars, were slowed down by over-description. It was just too much.

Conclusion

Overall, Prophase is a highly compelling read. I love the story, characters, and most especially the twist ending. The last 2 or 3 chapters seriously knocked my socks off. I think I’m gonna go back and read them again. I think with a little editing of a few sections in the middle–basically any scene where Esther is telling Piper history or describing how to use her new powers–it would be perfect. Since I can’t give partial stars, I’m going to go ahead and give Prophase 5 stars. If I could it would be more like 4.5, but regardless, I can safely say Prophase is a good tale! Go check it out!

2.5/5 Stars
Pros:
In most regards, this was your stereotypical YA story, with many of the familiar tropes and themes. A teenager finds out she is some kind of Chosen One with special abilities and must now save the world while finding herself. Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, that guy in ‰ÛÏReady Player One‰Û‰Û_this was just a recycling of that same idea. It was nice, however, to see a strong female play the role. I felt deeply for Piper; I was that same awkward, plain girl in high school and I remember all too well the angst and uncertainty of that age. Her struggle to adjust to the powers that awaken in her overnight was an understandable one and her eagerness to test them was very relatable. Seriously, who wouldn‰Ûªt make use of super-speed? And her reactions to heartbreak, family trouble, and the uncertainty of a changing future were very age appropriate.

Mr. Street knocked it out of the park with this aspect of his tale.

Cons:
Herein lies my main complaint. The editing in this novel is atrocious and anyone that knows my review criteria knows that this issue is often a deal-breaker for me. Missing words (mostly articles, but not exclusively), incorrect word choice (‰Û÷solidary‰Ûª when what was meant was ‰Û÷solitary‰Ûª), oddly structured sentences (‰ÛÏShe said to Jazz looking up at her.‰Û I know what the author meant, but the way this is written doesn‰Ûªt make it clear who is looking up at who.), mixed up plurals and singulars, and similar issues ran rampant from start to finish. Overall, this read very much like a first draft and it was a struggle to remain immersed in the story when typos kept jarring me out of it. Mr. Street, if you‰Ûªre reading this, I‰Ûªd like to offer you my services as an editor‰Û_or help you find one.

Bottom line: If you love YA fantasies, ‰ÛÏProphase‰Û will probably appeal to y

ou‰Û_assuming you can ignore the typos. I couldn‰Ûªt. Piper‰Ûªs strength and the uniqueness of her abilities make for an interesting read, but for me personally, the experience was pretty rough.

Given To Me For An Honest Review

Prophase: Present Tale (The Mitosis Series Book #1) by M. Street is a great fantasy, drama, action book. The main character is Piper. Her mother has died and she has to care for her younger brothers and sisters. She dreams of other things though. There are many interesting characters in the story also. Once you begin to read you will not be able to stop. It is a edge of your seat, real page turner and it does have twists and turns. When you get to the end you are going to want more. But don't worry. Books 2 and 3 will be coming before long. I gave this book 5 stars but it needs more. I enjoyed reading it very much and I look forward to more from M. Street.

Don't start this book.... What a way to begin a review huh?

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. What can I say that would wipe this smile off my face every time I think of this books? Nothing. Im am totally in love with the world this author has created. I want to be the girl the author is writing about. I had a hard time coming back to earth. M. Street writes a very well thought out fantasy book and I am looking forward to reading the next two books in this series.

This is a great YA fantasy! This is one that everyone will like and will be able to relate to! This is a coming of age story about Piper who has hurdles to cross. The author does a great job holding the readers attention and made it hard for me to put the book (Kindle) down.

A Struggle to Read but Awesome at the End

This writing was incredibly graphic in describing each scene, by which I felt overwhelmed. I found it difficult to read but I also was too interested in the story to stop reading. It was worth it by the last few chapters with an intense ending. I recommend it if you think you can handle it.

(I received a free copy of this book, through NetGalley, in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Ideally, I'd give this book 2.5 stars out of 5. I can't quite give it 3. I thought the blurb was really intriguing and I really did adore the front cover. I thought that the book did start off promising... but it quickly went downhill when Piper came into her abilities.

I did think that Piper became a much more unlikable character after her transformation. Although she claimed to care about and love her friends, I didn't really see much evidence of that. I thought most of the characters came across as quite immature... which I guess they were meant to be, but I couldn't really form an emotional connection to Piper. And I felt that her friends didn't seem to exist outside of her; mostly because I was only ever told what they were thinking and feeling through Piper, without having the chance to see it for myself.

While I did like Charlie's character, I was disappointed that Piper seemed to drop him as well, despite apparently seeming to care for him at various times. For most of the book, I felt that Piper was vapid and shallow. There was the 'soulmate' connection with Dev, which I felt was used rather than any real feelings developing between them.

I did like the fact that Piper was so good with Jaxx, even though it didn't take me that long to figure out the secret. I liked Esther... and I did like Lisa; at least what I saw of her that wasn't mad on Chet. Or other boys.

I didn't like how Piper treated Tess... but I wasn't really that keen on Tess, either. There was too much glossing over of events at the beginning of the book... and I felt the first chapter written from a different first person perspective wasn't necessary and didn't add anything to the story.

There was a lot of potential in this book, such as the deeper aspects to Rob. Unfortunately, it felt like it was more important for Piper to become a ridiculously over-powered character than in forming any attachments that felt real and had meaning.

I don't think I'll be reading the next book/s in this series.

I felt that the plot line became very predictable towards the end of the book. The entire book was an okay read, there were some interesting moments but overall it was pretty average. The more that I read the more that I disliked Piper (main character), I felt there were parts of her personality that didn’t really com across like the author wanted. Like she claims that she loves and cares about her friends but her actions doesn’t really support that. It did throw me off a little. Overall there weren’t a lot of characters that I liked and that greatly influenced my decision of giving 3/5 for this book.
