Redeem Me: A Dark Historical Romance

Rate this book
Evelyn Mayhew knows two things.

That it should be a blessing to be raised by a man of the Lord.

And that it should be a privilege to be betrothed to a man of power.

But when her awakening thoughts lead her not only away from the blind obedience she has been raised for but also toward a stranger offering her a glimpse of freedom, Evelyn is put at a crossroads.

Should she choose the shelter of a life confined, or risk the unknown with the man who would set her world — and her heart — on fire?

What a great debut novel! I was caught off guard by how much I enjoyed this! I haven’t read much of anything in the historical romance genre, but I came across this book on social media and figured I’d give it a try. So glad I did! I really enjoyed it, and it was a nice change of pace from my typical reads. I loved the dual POV between the incredibly sheltered FMC and the perfectly vile villain. I found both to be well-written, and learning the inner thoughts of the villain left me grimacing every time he made an appearance. I was eagerly anticipating both Evelyn’s personal growth and the villain’s eventual comeuppance and downfall. I liked the love interest, Jared, he was perfectly shrouded in mystery and so sweet and supportive, helping Evelyn face the true realities of the world, knowing it would only help her, even if in the moment it left her upset and questioning everything she’d ever known. Overall, this was a really enjoyable read for me, and I plan to check out more from this author and genre!

I think this is a debut novel for the author and I really enjoyed the story – wonderful imagery and a refreshing approach with dual POV not what you’d expect. The steamy scenes balanced the religious themes very well without going too far. I also enjoyed that the ‘heat’ in this histrom was both visceral and metaphorical, not to mention the fact even side characters had depth/were complex. If you’re looking for something a little different, a story with a villain who (in some ways) steals the show, give this book a try. I’m glad I did. The biblical theme of light and dark in this novel contained many shades of grey - I love that in a story!

In my opinion, this book is a slow burn. It takes a bit to get into it but once you are in it is a great story. I will be looking to see what other books the writer comes up with.

Redeem me is perfect for someone who loves a sheltered FMC. I sometimes struggle with those types of main characters, but I felt this was true to her character and how she was raised. I LOVED that the villain stayed the villain and wasn’t romanticized.
