Bridget Kimble is so excited to start her first day at EnMotion Elementary school in Bridget Kimble Learns Self-Control by Brandon Moore.

She doesn’t want to miss anything, so she makes sure she takes the first seat on the school bus and also in her classroom. Her teacher, Ms. Widget, hands out a list of expectations and rules of the classroom that each student is to follow. Afterward, they begin introductions so all the students can get to know each other. When it is Bridget’s turn, just as she’s about to start introducing herself, another student jumps up and starts his introduction instead. Bridget can’t help but express herself by saying that it is her turn, not that boy’s turn. Ms. Widget speaks to both students, but allows the boy to continue speaking, which doesn’t make Bridget too happy. She can’t understand why Ms. Widget allows the boy to continue speaking even though it is her turn to share. Little did the class know that Ms. Widget was planning to use this situation as a learning tool. What was Ms. Widget’s lesson to be learned from this situation? Will Bridget finally understand why Ms. Widget allowed the boy to continue speaking even though it wasn’t his turn?

This children’s story exemplified the perfect lesson of teaching children how to learn self-control and remain in control of their emotions when an unexpected situation arises. Bridget wasn’t happy when her classmate stepped out of turn to introduce himself to everyone. But once Ms. Widget finished hearing all the students’ introductions, she explained how this situation could became a life lesson for all of them. Instead of acting out her emotions abruptly, even though Bridget was correct that it was her turn, she showed self-control by expressing calmly to the other student that it wasn’t his turn. She displayed a maturity in the classroom that Ms. Widget wanted all the students to learn from.

At the end of the story, the book provided fun pages for readers to further enjoy. The section was called Creation Snippets and showed the drafts of the major characters’ rough sketches, colorized pallets used for the characters, how the backgrounds of each illustration became detailed and even how the text and chat bubbles were added to the story.

The illustrations provided by Mick Edrick M. Marcellana were vibrantly colored and presented similarly to a comic book format for the readers to enjoy. There were pictures displayed on every page for readers to follow along with the written word. The illustrations were the perfect complement to this children’s book storyline.

Quill says: Bridget Kimble Learns Self-Control by Brandon Moore will teach young readers that executing self-control of their emotions is a sign of maturity. The book is presented in somewhat of a comic book format, which makes it extremely unique in presentation, and will surely entertain the readers both verbally and visually.

Readers’ Comments
“I didn’t like the title as it suggests the book is going to be a bit boring. You know the sort – it’s bad to bully, it’s wrong to tell fibs, you need to learn self-control, etc. There’s nothing wrong with books that tell kids how to behave but they are ALWAYS boring. I did like the Bridget character, and the pics looked cool. But it wasn’t funny at all.” Boy, aged 9
“A bit of an odd book in so much as it’s a picturebook of sorts but the text is too difficult for most picturebook-aged readers. In fact, the text would work best for, say, 9 to 10 year olds. The problem then is 9 and 10 year olds don’t read picturebooks. A book without a home! I’d recommend the author simplify the text to bring it down to picturebook-aged readers or remove the illustrations and lengthen it into a short chapter book. Oh, and change the title; kids will find it very off-putting.” Retired publisher, aged 69
“This is a book about learning self-control. I think the lesson is good but the way it’s written is not so exciting. It’s a bit too babyish with the illustrations, but I don’t think young kids would get it. Okay, good for a school library.” Girl, aged 9
“Bridget learns a very important lesson in this story. I think the author should try to put funny bits in it and turn it into an adventure. It’s just not very exciting. Also, it feels too young for a 9 year old. Maybe a six year old would like the pics, but then I don’t think my six year old sister would understand the story.” Girl, aged 9 – with a little help from mum

To Sum It Up:

A fantastic read that perfectly taps into what keeps children glued to the pages. With its fun, eye catching design, this book is like a magnet for children, making it hard for even the most book-averse young minds to resist. Through the lively artwork and engaging narrative, it turns reading into an experience that sparks curiosity, excitement and understanding.

Bridget's adventurous spirit leaps off the pages, infusing the story with an infectious energy that is hard to resist. The theme of self-control, often a challenging concept to convey, is handled with finesse. With a deft hand, Moore manages to craft a story that’s as entertaining as it is enlightening, taking readers on an inviting exploration of emotional regulation. This is a crucial skill, as even adults frequently grapple with self-regulation. By introducing these ideas to children at a young age, the book lays the groundwork for emotional intelligence and resilience, making it a vital addition to any child's library.

Having Bridget Kimble on school bookshelves and in homes would be immensely beneficial, as life skills are just as critical - if not more so - than academic knowledge. The lessons of self-control can lead to healthier relationships and a more fulfilling life overall. By equipping children with the tools to navigate their emotions, this book serves as a stepping stone toward personal growth and maturity. In a world where emotional challenges are ever-present, stories like this are not just entertaining; they are essential for nurturing well-rounded individuals.
