Hatcher's Legacy

Rate this book
It's 1867 and the Munros have lost their entire homestead to a wildfire. The whole family—Moses, Grandma, Pa, Ollie, Judith, and newlyweds Jimmy and Celine—flee north and return to Rupert's Land. Desperate for work, Moses, Jimmy, and Celine gratefully accept the offer to guide an expedition for an English professor looking for dinosaur fossils near the forks of the Red Deer and South Saskatchewan rivers. But when one of the members of the expedition is murdered, the Munros begin to suspect that all is not as it seems. And it becomes ever clearer that they have unwittingly become involved in an international conspiracy with connections to an event from 35 years ago, when Moses was a trapper in the Rocky Mountains.

Del Pratt is a semi-retired cattle rancher. He and his wife Sheila live on the family ranch that his great-grandfather homesteaded in 1910, northeast of Oyen, Alberta. Along the way, he has trained horses, driven a school bus, spent a winter chaining seismic lines (back before GPS), ran a custom fencing business, and worked as a seed specialist for a forage seed company - all to raise a family, and support his ranching habit.

I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

A western set in Canada. A prairie fire burns out the family. Luckily, they know the governor of the province, so they aren't down and out for long. Then they get involved with some outlaws that act kind of like comancheros, but are in the wrong part of the continent.

Everything seems to come too easy to the heroes.

Hatcher's Legacy

This was a Goodreads giveaway win for me. Hatcher's Legacy is a short but very good read. I kind of wish it was longer. I hope the author decides to continue the story in the future.

This was an enjoyable read. It was a pioneer days adventure. I didn’t realize it was a sequel but it did just fine on its own.

(Thanks for the giveaway, goodreads)
