10/15/24 site calls it "Paranoid Crown Prince Was My Ex-Husband" aka The Seasons To Remember (Dual Rebirth)
Which I felt was a bit misleading ... although I guess technically true it was almost more like a misdirection.
Oh man I loved FL's "fuck this man and fuck all the trash ass men too we throw them in the incinerator." LOL. Yet another "he actually loved her but never told her/she never knew" >.< but in this case, it really does make sense/you get why - and he did try. And there were so many signs but she didn't see them. And he ALSO even made up for all of it. So <3
Loved how she took care of her mom too. And all the o_O twists and turns ... the side stories were cute - both liked and didn't those of her parents.... <.< Heh.
Wanted more of FL and ML!

IIRC the translation was meh - sigh - but man I wish it wasn't cuz I'd definitely rec it.

B++ maybe A-
~*~*~*~*~
C1 FL Rong Shu, ML Gu Changji

Oh FML the translator randomly broke up the chapters 😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖😖

C2(?) uh oh she is rebirthed into the morning after her wedding 😖
Hm 😒 so he knows his “mom” is really his “aunt” & he … doesn’t?!? like FL… and his mom/aunt already says this marriage won’t last more than 5 years?! 😒😡

C3 was what happened with her family in the past life true? And if he liked her at all I’m not seeing it

C7 I like FL is already working to change things from her past life. Sucks her family other than her mom seems to be terrible

C8 WTF is up with this Wen Xi “ML” Supposedly loves & what’s the story there 😒
Also still strongly dislike ML (and her shitty family)

C10 lol to him drinking the medicine she’s feeding him but WHAT DOES IT MEAN. (Also no kudos to him for leaving the carriage to protect her under the ambush - anyone else would’ve done the same)
“Gu Changjin fell silent for a moment before saying, "If I should fall into another coma, do not let her enter the room or allow her to feed me medicine."” 😡😡😡😡😡

12 I’m pissed he sent back the ginseng soup she had made for him. Seems he wasn’t rebirthed since he’s only getting dreams/visions of the past life. Bastard.

14 hope the not given gifts haunt him (though why wouldn’t she deliver them? 🤷🏻‍♀️)

18 😒 when his servants call him “your highness” is it just shitty translating or do they already know he’s the crown prince?

20 uhhhhh wtf is up with his INSANELY abusive aunt/mom?!?!

24 lol I’m glad he’s dreaming of her. SUFFER, ASSHOLE. Also it’s so sad how in love she was her past life & he treated her so badly

26 interesting. He’s upset she got hurt. (And his heart races when she’s near but he definitely - IMO - doesn’t realize it’s an emotional response)
Welp I’m glad FL’s POS dad was scolded but sadly it seems like that will be it. (Also WTF she doesn’t get her mom’s dowry?!?!?!?!?!)

27 “Mother, it's time to leave this place.” Yes queen. Burn down that shit ass Rong cesspool

30 💪💯 divorce half(ish) acquired!
And I hope that lantern haunts him. Jackass.
(And seriously WTF is up with that evil Xu Fu his mom/aunt/whatever)

32 … “Heng Ping's narrow eyes gazed steadily at Rong Shu. After a moment of silence, he replied, "This retreat serves as a backup plan for our master."” WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?! Did ML want her poisoned or not in the last life? WTF empress - is it Xu Fu? And what does that evil bitch want with/from FL’s mom?!?!?

34 😱 wait he’s realized he’s in love with her - but only a little & figured it is over since she already wants the divorce?!
(Also I like her oldest cousin - hopefully he’s actually good)

35 oof. Divorced. I’m not even mad she misunderstands him cuz he’s SUCH A WOOD BLOCK.

39 hm - glad he rescued her in the scholar riot

41 <.< 😏 so General Mu Rong (the brother of FL’s bestie) likes FL? … GET ON IT, GUY! … and eat your fucking heart out, ML!

43 lol ML is tasting jealousy ❤️💯
(Also why is that eunuch Liu Yuan(?) messing with Mu Rong?! 😡 I want FL to get a courtship!)

44 omg 😹☠️ The heavens really are helping ML letting him travel with FL

45 😬 <.< is “uncle Lu ShiYi” really trustworthy?!

46 fuuuuck I am STRESSED the “Zhang mama” by FL is that evil monster Xu Fu’s person & her evil not uncle is in cahoots with them

47 tbh very glad FL’s mom has these secret assets

50 I am STRESSED FL has no suspicions towards Zhang mama 😖😖😖😖😖

51 is this… 😱😱😱 subtle courtship?! (lol I like her guard is trying to hook up her general. STEP UP DUDE)

52 >.> were the terrible longevity noodles in her past life made by ML?

53 😒 especially looking at how beloved mid autumn festival is in this book how/why is it “inauspicious” to be born on it?
Eek pirates with gunpowder!

54 ☹️ well I don’t want Liu Yuan to die now - why are all the wrong people dying
FL is so smart! ❤️💯 rescue the people!

56 (I’m really enjoying his dreams of their last life…)

58 😱 he embraced her! For him that’s practically full on sex!
FL was so badass to defend the city thus 💪💯❤️
But 🫥 he’s actually seriously injured & feverish
Damn girl. … but… 🫠 I don’t hate it? “"My lord, these matters are no longer significant. When I liked you, you didn't feel the same. By the time you came to like me, I had already lost those feelings. With us being just one step apart, it seems we were simply lacking in fate. If that's the case, why force it?"”

60 oop he’s determined to get her now! 😱😅

64(?) oh. FUCK. I literally put my first to my mouth. FL YOU’RE STILL NOT WARY ENOUGH. Shit shit shit shit shit that Zhang mama is going to try to kill you 😖😖😖😖😖
Shiiiiiiiiiiiit. I’m so stressed I hate all of this 😭😭😭
Glad ML woke up worried and him just appearing at the end of the chapter & her telling him she killed someone

65(?) I’m so glad he saved her! But eek is ML & his crew down the life saving pills now? And 😡 I don’t want them to save Zhang…

(68 honestly it almost seems like the author likes *anyone* else more than ML & FL… 😒🫥)

71 I love that her mom believes her unconditionally & is going to boot the shit ass “uncle” from the Shen family & that they’re both done with the Rong family too 💪💯 - hopefully they manage to get it done in time

73(?) oh damn even their passenger boat was attacked. And they rescue each other in the water! ❤️

74 ok but seriously how does dude keep just surviving these bone revealing injuries like he treats them like freaking paper cuts
Oof and he’s finally dreamed of her death

75 eeee him ~confronting her - though he only thinks it’s dreams “"I haven't had any such dreams," Rong Shu lifted her eyelashes, meeting his intense gaze head-on. She stated firmly, "Gu Changjin, there is no past life between us. Those were just dreams."
Gu Changjin stared at her intently. After a moment, he lowered his gaze, took her lightly trembling hand in his, and pulled her into his embrace. He inhaled her scent from the tip of her nose, almost greedily absorbing her essence.
"It doesn't matter whether it was a dream or not, or if you've actually dreamed it. Rong Zhaozhao, let's start anew." His slender fingers, calloused from work, stroked her hair as his thin lips brushed against her earlobe. He whispered softly, "This time, I'll protect you and ensure that no one else hurts you."”

76 … 😱😱😱 wait is he saying he’s fake as the prince?!! (Him saying he’s actually GCJ - or does he just mean he’s steadfast?)
Oof “He longs to reveal every inch of himself to her, but she prefers to remain ignorant of it all.”
Oh shit - so yes the actual price Xiao Yan died after barely recovering from some epidemic & gave ML, GCJ his identity 😱
… so who is guard Ni and is he still alive

78 and he’s been acknowledged & titled crown prince

79 ugh so the one aunt/paternal relative she liked is evil
And eeek why do you want to take her back to where she died, ML?!?

80 oof he’s trying for… not exactly closure but… also I think it *is* important to investigate who poisoned her to ward off future danger! She’s not as clear/safe as she thinks!

82 😐 confronting family & is her cousin (who she had a positive association with) taking the fall for his shit mom?

83 *sigh* “"Mother, there's no need for you to shield me," Rong Ze interrupted her, his expression calm yet resolute. "I'd rather take my own life than bring harm upon you."” - he deserved a better mom

85 wait wait wait Xuan Ce is… questioning(?!) master Fan Qing - and is he helping Wen Xi (who I fully expect will be A Problem) or not?!

86 uh oh what will he do to make her angry? 😬 marriage edict?
(Called it!)

87 😒😒😒😡😡😡 this cunt Wen Xi poisoning herself and wasting all these precious herbs to detoxify her. Stupid empress. And bitch ass cunt WX.

89 🙄😒 lowkey double wife chasing crematorium so FL’s shit ass dad did like/love FL’s mom? Only he never showed it, treated her like trash, took all her money, and raped her. Fuckhead. I hope FL’s mom marries someone awesome
Uh oh “"We will be different," Gu Changjin assured her. "I will give you the world you desire, as long as you stay by my side. Rong Shu, this time, it will be different."
Now, he had the strength to protect her, unlike in his past life where he had to restrain himself, suppressing his feelings, afraid that any misstep would lead them both into a hopeless abyss.
"When I married you, I thought it would be different too," Rong Shu said with a faint smile. She realized that perhaps her love wasn't deep enough, unwilling to sacrifice the life she wanted for him. If she hadn't died early in her previous life, she would have still divorced him and left.
"But I can't let go," Gu Changjin stepped closer, embracing her tightly. His voice was hoarse as he whispered in her ear, "Rong Shu, I can't let go. I don't want to experience the pain of losing you again. I want to open my eyes and see you, touch you, hear you call me 'Yunzhi'. I'd rather you hate me than to lose you."
His words echoed with sincerity and a depth of emotion that transcended their previous lives.”

90 arrggghhh like I get her rejection and I want her to have what she wants, but I do at this time believe ML will be the best to her in anyone in the world. So her rejection is letting others have ideas & I hates it
BLERP 🫠 “Besides, she hadn't agreed to his three-year pact.
After Gu Changjin made that proposal, she didn't respond.”
ANXIETY SPIKE “If Miss didn't like someone, she would say so straightforwardly.
Just now, she hadn't said she disliked him; only that it didn't matter whether she did or not.”
Rnnngghh her thinking of the ice animals he carved for her & realizing he was the one who made the terrible longevity noodles… “In her previous life, she had always thought him cold, but in truth, he had concealed his affection for her within countless subtle, unnoticed gestures.”

91 😱😱😱 literally clapped a hand over my mouth. WHAT?! FL isn’t Shen YiZhen’s daughter?! Don’t tell me SHE is the actual real princess?! (Ironic her shit ass biological mom the empress murdered her her past life then, if it was the empress who forced the poison…) but! If she is then she “can’t” be together with ML!!! 😱😱
And another 🙊 - ML took FL into the (Eastern) palace to protect her?! (Love that her mom was rushing off to protect her too ❤️💯)

92 … is Xu/Xiao Fu’s out to get FL really just just ML likes her? I mean she’s evil & psycho enough that that’s a sufficient reason, but damn.

93 <.< ok I think it’s actually a bit creepy his sleeping quarter is an exact replica of hers/theirs before…
😹☠️ ML having his ice carvings brought & the servants thinking they have a special place in FL’s heart. Heh - he wishes!
Ok yeah FL’s Buddha bead necklace - she’s the actual real princess. Oof.

94 ok I loved this chapter of him spoiling her 😻😻😻 (lol and … will he really give her three years of freedom?)

96 🙊 again! So past life the empress gave FL a fake death poison/meant to meant it to her & save her - but someone switched it!!!

97 😒 please tell me Xu Li’er has figured out Wen Xi is in cahoots with Zhu gugu (though it seems… not?) 😖
Oof so MLis ~letting WX steal FL’s identity so he can marry FL again

99 😡 when will WX die?! She is only second worst to Xu/Xiao Fu!

100 [the shitty bot translating & person ~editing has made this kinda word salad & too often you don’t know what character is actually referred to.]
Oh FUCK. So the empress DOESN’T know FL is actually her daughter & dislikes her cuz that cunt WX but only wants her to go away not die. FUCK. And the idiot empress doesn’t know nanny Zhu isn’t actually her person.
Hopefully Xu Li knows & ML knows.

101 hm so I definitely think the emperor loves the empress & vice versa
Shit so now the empress knows FL is her daughter … why … can’t ML marry her? (Does the empress think he’s related to her? Even as a Qi child he’d be a distant relative no?)
And :/ the empress thinks FL knows she’s her mom? Which … MAYBE she does but also maybe not?

102 oh SHIT the emperor has people following the empress … is HE who poisoned FL?!?!??!?
lol I’m not mad ML schemed against the empress 🤷🏻‍♀️
AND THE GUARDS DIDN’T LOOK?!? SOMEONE NEEDS TO ADDRESS THE PEOPLE FOLLOWING THE EMPRESS!!!
Ok so it was “nanny Zhu” acting for Xu/Xiao Fu that poisoned FL under the guise of the empress’s orders

104 oop and that’s Xiao Fu and Tan Zi (the ex “uncle”) dead. And Wen Xi is his daughter… who is her mom? And … she’ll be a problem if kept alive/allowed to live…
😬 he said it’s over but… what will the emperor do. And WX.

105 🤞🤞🤞 “As for Wen Xi, the Empress claimed she was possessed and fed her an exorcism potion. After taking that medicine, she'll likely never wake up again."
“Gu Changjin paused before continuing, "This world needs a Princess Qingxi."
Only then would she be safe, free to go wherever Shen Shu wished.” 🤷🏻‍♀️ I like that WX is the shield for FL
Lin QingYue rendered herself mute but… can’t she write? <.<

Ok so she knows. “Rong Shu lowered her gaze. She had never met her birth mother, and it would be a lie to say she wasn't curious about her.
But that curiosity was just that—curiosity. The moment Empress Qi abandoned her at Da Ci'en Temple, their bond as mother and daughter was severed.”

106 uh oh why is the emperor sending ML away?

107(108?) 🙊🙊🙊 “In her past life, she had waited for him for three years, and in this life, he would return that favor.
And he wanted her to wait for him so that, one day, he could openly and honorably marry her.
The qualities that had once captured her heart in this man had never disappeared.
Aware of all he had done for her in their past life and the opportunities they had missed, how could she not be deeply moved?
Between them, many words were unnecessary; they already understood each other's hearts.” 🥰
😱😱😱 is the emperor going to murder their daughter? Is that why he told the empress not to be mad at him?! (Also I get ML can’t tell them who he is but … 😖😖😖 it’s not incest!) … ohhh right they think he’s a kid one of the empress’s brother’s concubines had 🫥

109 uh oh Daoist Qing Miao rescued FL but not out of altruism. (And who was trying to fake FL’s death?! ML or the emperor?! … or someone else?!)
Oh. So… she knows it’s the emperor who wants her disappeared… wait argh was it a typo saying ML & her mom would go mad if they thought she was dead?! Damn you shitty translation!!!

110 😱 another ML defying the heavens to bring back FL story?!
😱 FL wasn’t supposed to keep her memories of the past life? Then she’d already be deader than dead!

112 damn. He acquired 40 years of great merit just to try to turn back time/so he could be with her again.
… wait but if he did the formation why/how did he lose his memories and only dream them?

113 also though kinda ew like he’s mentally a 60 year old man and she’s ~19 now? Well I guess mentally 22? 🫠
Also though 😱 was the 40 years enough or does ML have to give up more?! … and will the current emperor try to kill FL?!
Rrggnngghh “"Zhaozhao, you don't have to bear any burden. I'm doing this for myself."
He was willing to sacrifice everything he had to alter her fate, even though it originated from her, but ultimately, it was for his own sake.
It was because he couldn't come to terms with her death.
It was he who refused to let go of her.
And these feelings should not be a burden to her.”
Awww I love how loyal Chang Ji is to FL too ❤️
😱 “He said, "Rong Zhaozhao, go ahead and do whatever you desire. Don't hold back."
He had spared no effort to bring her back to life, not to imprison her by his side, causing her unhappiness.
He couldn't be as greedy as he once was.
All he wanted was for her to be happy.
For her to live freely and joyfully, was already a source of contentment and gratitude for him.” Does that mean not with him?!

115 kiss! 😄

117 ahhh remarried! … ish. But I want them to have the pomp!

118 finally in two lifetimes they have sex! (… BUT WHAT IF SHE GETS PREGNANT?!)

119 actual wedding! 😻💯(lol 💪💯 to two hours of bath sex - DIDN’T THE WATER GET COLD THOUGH?!)
Ahh and they go solve lantern riddles again!
AND THAT’S THE END OF THE MAIN TEXT?!

120 aww doting parents - and lol that flashback

124 aww Xiao Huaian crashed their honeymoon & is grilling out with them in FL’s ~natal/maternal home
Omg 😱😅 if [county princess- FL’s bestie] Mu Nijing & the not monk Xuan Ce get together they’re going to have the most ~murdery babies

125 😱😅 “After reading that letter, he missed her terribly. For a fleeting moment, he had even considered tearing the letter, infused with her scent, into pieces and swallowing them whole.”
Awww I’m calling that her finally acknowledging the emperor as her dad

127 and he’s emperor & she’s empress now - officially!

128 starts the emperor & empress’s ~flashback … or… the emperor is rebirthed?! O.o
129 I like that this life Xiao Yan is determined to protect their children (but what about ML how will FL marry him?!)
130 blorp he ~easily became emperor again
131 FL reborn! lol difficult baby
😹😹😹💯💯💯 “Upon meeting her gaze, Qi Zhen's sternest heart melted, and she spoke gently, "It's alright, you're our Xiao family's little princess. It's fine to be a bit impatient. When you grow up, your Father Emperor will find you a prince consort with a gentle temperament just like his. If the prince consort's temper is bad, we'll ask your Father Emperor to replace him."
As Empress Qi spoke, on the borders of Jinan Prefecture, atop Floating Jade Mountain, a three-year-old boy carrying a longbow couldn't help but sneeze loudly.”

133 lol third life for FL & ML! … though how does she have a connection with Shen? 🤷🏻‍♀️
Aww their meeting on his mountain

134 ah! Serendipity brought her & Shen YiZhen back together! Glad FL’s dad allowed it
(And glad this life Shen YiZhen married Lu SiYi from go)

135 ahhh married! (2 years after he becomes the top scholar again!)
SO CUTE 😻

English title: The Seasons To Remember (Dual Rebirth)

I don't come a lot of double rebirth stories, so I was immediately intrigued when I saw this pop up. In addition to the rebirth theme, it's also a wife chasing crematorium story. The ML, Gu Changjin, didn't treat the FL, Rong Shu, properly in their last life and she died thinking that he didn't love her, so he makes up for his regrets in this life by supporting her in her attempts to right the wrongs from her previous life.

**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**

To be honest, there was a lot more scheming than I expected in the story, the most I've read in a story in a long time. I thought it would be more focused on the romance, but most of the time the romance takes a back seat to all of the political schemes and intrigue that's happening in the background. I personally love complex and intricate plots, so I enjoyed it here, but I did get quite confused along the way and had a hard time following. It wasn't until the end that I finally started understanding who the various factions are and who's allied with who. Part of the reason for this is because there are a lot of names and titles thrown around, so it was easy to lost in the explanations of past events until it was repeated a couple times. But also, it didn't help that some of the names and pronouns in the translation were wrong, so that made it a bit more confusing to read.

The first couple of mini arcs follows Gu Changjin as he investigates various cases. Even though they seem simple, like the case of a beautiful musician girl getting wrongfully abused by a noble or the case of exam fraud where the top scholar is accused of cheating, all of them are more complicated than they seem at first glance with complicated ties to powerful officials behind the scenes. The author also does a really good job of tying these seemingly one-off cases to the greater political schemes at play; either someone is using this case to bring down a powerful official or to support one prince's faction over another's. I was pretty impressed by how well the author was able to write so many scheming characters; from our main characters to court officials to even monks, everyone's in on some kind of scheme lol

The romance is good once it starts, but it's definitely slow burn. Even though it's dual rebirth, the FL is the only one to have all of her memories right from the start, while the ML slowly gets his memories back through dreams, so it takes a while for him to fall for her again. Initially their marriage starts the same way, with cold and indifferent treatment on his end. The difference is that Rong Shu doesn't care about his attitude this time, whereas in her previous life she tried really hard to be a good wife and was inevitably hurt by his cold attitude.

This time around, Rong Shu is completely done with him and determined to never marry again and instead enjoy the single life raising horses with her mother. I appreciate how she stuck to her principles and didn't easily agree to get back together with GCJ; instead he had to work to win her back. And even after she starts liking him again, she still didn't agree to marry him and even rejects an imperial marriage decree because she prioritizes her freedom over anything else. She's a great example of a smart and independent FL who knows exactly what she wants to accomplish.

Initially when the story is told from the FL's POV, I was skeptical on whether the author would be able to redeem the ML, but she explains his past actions well. Even though he kept the FL at a distance, he showed his affections in small ways like carving animal ice sculptures for her and then claiming it was a token of appreciation from a neighbor, so she never realized it was from him. It was nice to see the FL think back to his previous actions and gradually realize everything he actually did a lot for her, especially when she learns that this bizarre rebirth situation is due to his past actions.

Even though it's a rebirth story, there's not much face slapping. The FL has matured a lot given her painful experiences in her previous life, and in the new life she's more concerned about preventing the tragic events of the past and saving her family and mother more than anything else. Obviously she has limited resources, but she's able to accomplish her goals with the ML's help. They work well together, and there are many instances where they don't need to communicate out loud because they understand each other so well.

I also love that Rong Shu has a great relationship with her mother. It's not something I see very often in rebirth novels since the FL is usually mistreated by her family or her parents are dead, so it was refreshing to see that she's so close to her mother and to witness how they're willing to do anything for each other. Even when the truth is revealed that she's not the real daughter of her mother, that doesn't diminish their love and affection for each other. Especially because of her mother's tragic fate in her previous life, I'm glad that her mother was able to divorce her father and live a life of fulfillment with a new love afterwards.

On the other hand, it was painful to see Rong Shu betrayed by some of her most beloved characters other than her mom. When she first starts suspecting Zhang Mama, who has looked after her since she was a baby, that was a sad moment. Unfortunately, her faint suspicions came true, and her investigations culminated in a dramatic scene where Zhang Mama tried to poison her. In addition, her beloved uncle, who she treats as a father figure given that her own father was absent from her life, is actually involved in some pretty dangerous schemes involved illegal firearm smuggling to pirates to earn money to support the second prince. In the previous life, his actions took down both the Shen and Rong families, but the silver lining is that Rong Shu was able to get ahead of it this time and help her mom escape the worst of the fall out.

I really enjoyed this story and would recommend it to anyone looking for a slow burn story filled with political intrigue.

Ending my review with some of my favorite moments from the story:

I love reading about their implicit understanding of each other <3

Ever since he had spirited her away from Minglu Courtyard with a grave expression, bringing her to the Eastern Palace to hide, she had sensed his fear -fear of something looming, something tied to her fate.

If she asked, he would not lie. He would tell her everything. But instinct told her not to press. Some things, once spoken, would set changes in motion that could not be undone.

She understood him, just as he understood her.

She did not ask, and he did not speak. Instead, he reassured her in the quiet ways he knew best.

It had been a long time since Rong Shu had allowed herself such indulgence.

---------------------

I loved the moment when the ML finally gets his revenge against the woman who raised him but also ruined his life by feeding her the poison she used to kill Rong Shu in the past

Gu Changjin rose from his seat, reached for the teapot on the table, and lifted the lid. From his sleeve, he produced a small pill and dropped it inside.

Then, he retrieved a teacup, tilting the pot to pour a slow, deliberate stream of tea. "The princess once told me never to forget my father's murderer. She even forced me to swear that one day, I would personally avenge him. Now, the time has come to fulfill my vow."

Xiao Fu lifted her gaze from the portrait, her face turning ashen as she stared at the cup of tea.

Sangengtian. It had to be Sangengtian.

---------------------

He's such a positive and supporting influence in her life! He isn't willing to force a marriage and wants her to live on her own terms, even after everything he went through to give her a second chance at life

He looked at her, his eyes brimming with tenderness.

"Rong Zhao Zhao," he murmured, "whatever you wish to do, go and do it. No hesitation."

He had traded everything for her second chance at life-not to keep her caged by his side, bound by sorrow.

He could no longer afford to be selfish. All he wanted was for her to be happy. Because as long as she lived-truly lived, freely and joyfully-then for him, that was enough.

That was everything.

4.8. "The Seasons To Remember" was definitively a great story - just ignore the other potential names for this one. I do, because if those had been the titles I probably would have ignored this story...

The premise of this story is a dual rebirth story. Both the FL and the ML come back, the difference here is that only the FL remembers from the moment she returns, the ML gets his memories back much slower... bit by bit.

In their first life they were married for three years and towards the end of it, the FL (and the rest of the world) found out that the men she had married was not actually a lowly scholar (she married down to be with him) but instead the lost crown prince. She also gets herself exiled to a secluded courtyard, finds out the man she loved for three years apparently has someone else in his heart, her family has committed treason and then gets presented with a cup of poison by the empress.

She drinks and she wakes up again on the morning of her wedding. ( I cried my way through the first couple of chapters... hahaha) Here she does the smart thing. She does not go for revenge, or confront him. Instead she decides to figure out a way to get herself a divorce so he can be with the white moonlight and she can figure out what happened to her family and make sure to keep her mother safe (Priorities!).

At this point of the story there is one small thing that stuck out to me and bothered me a bit. It really was the only thing, and it might just be personal preference, but I will mention it anyway: her feelings when it comes to the ML make no sense to me. She feels nothing for him for admiration and that just... doesn't work? I get that she would no longer be in love for him or refuse to care, but apathy, after everything? Not even anger or some disappointment? I don't think people work like that, especially not if she actually loved him as much as she claimed (and she did). I also felt like this absolute apathy and professional admiration undercut the amazing choice she makes here by stepping away and striving for her own happiness. Cutting off something you don't care about is so much easier than cutting of something you care about, even if you know it's bad for you. If there had been a bit more... feelings. Good or bad. This novel would have been perfect. Let her be angry?

That said... as readers we realize pretty quickly... that the FL is wrong in what she believes happened in her last life. It becomes quite clear through the POV of other characters - the ML and side characters - that she, through no fault of her own, only saw the surface and had no idea what was really going on around her. That included her husband's care for her. Because he did care deeply, he was just really bad at showing it - partly that wasn't his fault, and partly it was. She did deserve more from him, but he tried his hardest. Sometimes, that's just not enough. The tragedy is that they could have been happy, if he had been just a bit more open and she just a bit better at looking twice.

You can't blame her though, because the schemes were deep. Even what initially feels like "side quests" in this story matters in the long run. All the characters and the relationships, they have an impact, and even those that should be on the two main characters side... might not be. There are very, very few characters the female lead can truly trust and what makes this novel exciting is... that she does not know it. In this life she tries to investigate what happens and so her life continues to interlink with the ML - because he is investigating too, so they end up working together.

This story is about unraveling the schemes of the past, finding out what lead to the suffering and the ending they encountered in their last life... and finding their way together again. Not because that's her plan - she really has better things to do. But because he really works hard for her and never gets in her way. He just cares and shows it (FINALLY). In the end, it's very satisfying. Their is nothing unreasonable about it. It's natural and it feels good. This is the ending they both worked hard for.

In the last life she chose him. Then after rebirth, she first chose herself. At the end, both of them chose "them". And them always includes both of them, which is the way a relationship should be. And that's what makes this story so good.

It's not just the love story (a delicious and excellently done slow burn!) and the schemes that are excellent. The characters are as well. I liked the ML more than the FL. He is just more tormented and struggles more (see my complain above...). The female lead is strong, decisive and works for her happiness - without suddenly having super powers or knowing everything. She needs help sometimes, which makes her human - I like her a lot. Most of the time when I cried it was from her POV. But the side characters were great as well - even the antagonists had motivations that made sense. But my favorites where Shen Yinzhen - the FL's mother, and the empress!

Last but not least: the extras. This time it's definitely a set of extras you should read. They were so worth it. Especially the last one where another characters gets a redo. Ever wondered if anyone could ensure that the FL is even happier then the ML made her in the end? The extras gives the answer.

Definitely a book you should read. Just keep in mind that it's a (really good) slow burn.

Honestly, the novel alone made my year. You would think Pihanjin would have spoiled this genre but here comes The Seasons Remember. A whole new world. From chapter 1 to the extras, I didn't regret any word read. Well savored, sumptuous feast.
