Rate this book
A fast paced, enemies to lovers slow burn fantasy romance. Perfect for fans of Fourth Wing, Throne of Glass and The Witcher.

The only way to get to the truth is through deception.

Gwyndolyn Farren. The once infamous Dragon Slayer, and now the Captain of the Aentheian—a title passed down from her adoptive father. A title she's not certain she's worthy of.

Until a simple intel mission goes wrong, leading her and her men to fall into the hands of the The Draekon King Mathias and his inner circle of assassins. In exchange for their freedom, and information regarding her past, Gwyn must give up the one thing she has been certain of her entire life...her loyalty to her kingdom.

With an arrogant and infuriatingly good-looking assassin lurking in the shadows, watching her every move, Gwyn is forced to follow the demands of King Mathias. Secrets quickly unfold leaving Gwyn to question everything she thought she knew about her past and the kingdom she calls home.

Is she willing to lose everything to get the answers she's searched her entire life for? Or will the deadly consequences of her actions catch up to her before she can get a sliver of truth?

This book may just be my new obsession that I’ll scream into the void about.

If you love…
- romantasy
- slow burn
- enemies to lovers
- you’ll regret touching her
- forced proximity
- found family
- he falls first
- political intrigue
- delicious banter that will have you clutching your pearls
- dragons

…then you absolutely NEED to read The Dragon’s Traitor.

I stumbled upon The Dragon’s Traitor on kindle unlimited. I’d never heard of Emily Elder, which is almost a crime tbh. Her writing captured me from the very beginning. I was never bored reading this book. In fact, my heart rate skyrocketed when I was reading it because not only was it suspenseful, but I was rooting for our characters. Gwyn and the badass FMC that she is has officially earned a spot on my top 10 favorite FMCs of all time. She’s strong, fierce, and will never back down from a fight. TRUST ME, you will fall in love with her just like Kai did. Speaking of my baby Kai, he has also officially earned a spot on my top 10 favorite MMCs of all time. Not only is he determined to save Gwyn in any way that he can, but THE MOUTH ON THAT MAN HAD ME SQUEALING. I’m foaming at the mouth for the spicy scenes between these two because the slow burn is catching fire quickly. I'm also very excited for more of the found family trope to be shown in book 2.

Now let’s get to the plot. I could tell immediately that Emily is a phenomenal writer. She knew exactly what she wanted to portray and excelled at it. The world-building was detailed, but simple to understand. I was never confused and didn’t catch myself having reread pages to follow along. The ending was satisfying and nerve-wracking, but boy am I glad I can binge The Dragon’s Heir now. If it wasn’t out, I fear that I would perish lol.

This book is brilliant and deserves way more hype. Read it. THE END.

yeah.... I'm the wrong reader for this. I am far too picky.
I couldn't move past the changing tenses within the same sentence. Elder couldn't decide whether to write in present or past tense, so she flipflopped between both... constantly.
The dialogue was rough, too.

It started with Gwyn leading a small battalion of men for some reason. I guess her father died and made her Captain when she was 10ish. A 10ish year old Captain... interesting. Anyway, that was 11 years ago, and she's still useless.

We get right into it when Gwyn and her band of men ride into a burnt out Eros and are easily intercepted by some magic people. Not once does it appear that her or her band of merry men are prepared for such an encounter, yet it is noted she's a royal guard, and it's implied they had an idea of what they'd be walking into.
We have a brief duel with swords where Gwyn breaks all the rules of anyone trained in swordsmanship by giving into her emotions, being distracted by things other than her opponent, and not learning anything about how skilled her opponent might be. She actually died in that duel. Convince me otherwise.

Gwyn is immediately taken with Kai. I'm not seeing it. She's supposed to have a deep-seated prejudice against his kind, but it's easily dismissed.

Anyway, as soon as she got her way of not being put on a dragon, I understood this was when they'd travel and find out they love each other and it made no logical sense to go that route. I understood that I was going to hate this.

So, I'll spare myself and everyone else the rants that would have ensued should I have finished this.

This book felt very fast to the point it was a little hard to connect with some of the main characters. So many predictable tropes that you see these days in fantasy as well. “He smelled of…” “What did they do to you…” We have the usual villain/love interest that claims to be an enemy but the FMC is immediately attracted to his scent lol. We have internal conflict, a dick of a brother, and some dark matter towards the end. The second half of the book roped me in enough to speed through the book and want to read the second just to see where this is going!

When I read this book for the first time, I was a little disappointed with how fast paced it was and how... not horribly written it was, but how poor the thought process and planning was. However, I was still so excited for the second one.

Reading this now after it has been rewritten? This is easily one of my favorite books I have gotten from a free kindle book day. The rewrite was so much better and I cannot wait to read the second one.

A Good Read!

I enjoyed the book. I loved the slow burn romance going on in this book and I really enjoyed the world that was created. I was bummed with the relationship between the brother and Gwyn. I sort of thought they were closer at the beginning and once the brother discovered the truth, I thought he’s reconcile with his sister. That bummed me out as I was hoping they’d be a team together in the end, but I loved the plot and of course, I loved the dragons. :)

This story took off and just kept going in all the best ways. I enjoyed the enemies to lovers, slow burn happening, and that it felt like an accompaniment to a great plot rather than being all encompassing. I felt my heart break with the heroine as she opens her eyes to the world around her, and that alone is a sign of a great story teller.
I can’t wait to start book 2!

The book wasn't completely bad, but it wasn't good either. It was just extremely cliche.

I stopped at 21%. The protagonist just spouted off like an immature teenager to her captor and then a king. It was annoying and idiotic.
