even from a distance he looked deadly. His lean, towering frame measured at least three inches over six feet. About two hundred pounds of mean muscle and bone. His dark clothes were coated with a gray film of trail dust, from his worn and scarred boots to the sweat-stained, low-crowned hat on his head. The butt of a frontier Colt jutted from the holster tied to his right thigh. Like his clothes, the gun was far from new. Framed by long black hair like an Indian, the stranger's face was deeply etched by sun and wind, and a past that would defy description. As many people before had learned, the inhabitants of Monksville would soon realize that this grim visitor would change their lives and end more than a few of them...

A fantastic cover with a helluva story to back it up. Mostly a flashback to Edge’s adventures at the close of the Civil War that made him the black hearted bastard he is now. Chock full of blood, bullets, carnage and snappy, quick-witted gallows humor!
Don't point a gun at Edge, he doesn't fucking like it. He got a telegram about his dead wife. Edge an emotionless animal that could kill easily than devour a nice meal without regret. His wife had changed him until her death. A new town and even newer trouble. A sheriff and deputies try to arrest Edge for a past murder. Probably shouldn't try this. Edge blasts a bullet through a temple spewing out blood before the body crashes through the window. Now he is sheriff for a day and more death rises.
I always enjoy the Civil War flashback stories in this series. That plot was considerably stronger than the primary plot, which has Edge being lured to a town where he can be killed. Lots of action. Kept me reading.
Another double story in one book. The first is the final Civil War flashback for Edge. The second is present time. He's made Sheriff in an old town to protect some prisoners. Still bloody and gory. Just not one of the better books in the series.
I really liked the ending of this book, because it had a very happy ending, when Danny, Jay, and Terrel all choose to go play for Harvard for college basketball. This book would make a very good disney movie, because there was some problems with the scouts and sponsors, but it also ended in a happy ending. This book would make a hit movie.
