Kindred spirits Makenna Reagan and Kenzie Reese have been best friends since college. There is nothing one would not do for the other. So when a car wreck lands Kenzie in the hospital, Makenna agrees to pose as her friend on a photo assignment for Now Magazine. Skeptical at first, she is quickly enchanted by the beautiful White Mountains and a captivating man she meets on the plane. This crazy scheme just might work!
But impersonating her friend comes at a price. A car tries to run her off the road… a stranger delivers cryptic messages for ‘her father’… an armed assailant follows her. Almost kidnapped, Makenna realizes her dearest friend has dark secrets in her past. Long before learning of the Mafia’s involvement, Makenna knows they are both in serious trouble.
No one is who they claim to be -- not Kenzie, not the handsome and charming Hardin Kaczmarek, not the odd couple who has befriended her, not even Makenna herself! Determined to protect her friend at all costs and get back home to Texas, Makenna knows trusting the wrong person could prove fatal.
Interwoven with mystery and intrigue, this powerful story of friendship, love, and belonging is the first book of the Mirrors Don’t Lie series.
Best-selling indie and hybrid author Becki Willis loves crafting stories with believable characters in believable situations. Many of her stories stem from her own personal experiences. (No worries; she's never actually murdered anyone).
When she’s not plotting danger and adventure for her imaginary friends, Becki enjoys reading, spending time with her family, unraveling a good mystery (real or imagined), dark chocolate, and a good cup of coffee.
A professed history geek, Becki often weaves pieces of the past into her novels. Family is a central theme in her stories and in her life. She and her husband enjoy traveling but believe coming home to their Texas ranch is the best part of any trip.
Becki has won numerous awards—including two Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Awards, InD’Tale’s coveted RONE, and been named Finalist for two Claymore Awards—but feels the real compliments come from her readers. Drop in for an e-visit anytime at beckiwillis.ccp@gmail.com, or www.beckiwillis.com.
Makenna Reagan and Kenzie Reese are look alikes, except for their hair. And they are close friends since the first day of college. When Kenzie gets into an accident, she asks Makenna to go and finish her assignment for "Now" magazine for a week. As she just lost her boyfriend and job as a reporter, she agrees to her friend's advice of excitement. But, Makenna got much more than what she bargained for, in the new place. Posing herself as Kenzie, Makenna sets off to New Hampshire, only to find a handsome man, Hardin, sitting at the side of her. When she sees Hardin in her hotel, she thinks she is lucky. But, another couple from her flight also resides in a resort near her. And things suddenly go awry..somebody is trying to run her over with a car; warning about Hardin being abusive; kidnapped; warning message to be delivered to Kenzie's dad.. There is so much going on, and Makenna is in the middle of a huge ploy. How is she going to get out of this alive?
This was a surprisingly good read, except for the abrupt ending. I absolutely loved the characters, Hardin and Makenna. The prose flowed beautifully. It was edited, but there are some minor spelling mistakes. I finished this book in over 3 hours and the plot kept me interested enough.
Yes, there were some flaws in the novel, which if I write, will become a major spoiler. And there is the ending, which I don't approve. The author has not mentioned anything about the cover that Kenzie's mother gave her or about Kenzie's father or anything much from their end. If this is the series, I can forgive the way it ended. But, there is no mention of it being a series, so the ending became a major letdown.
This is a contemporary romantic suspense novel, the first book in the Mirrors Don't Lie series. "Curvy girl romance" would be a sub-genre, I suppose, because Makenna is on the heavier side.
Makenna's best friend Kenzie is like a sister to her, in every way that counts. Their personalities are similar, they like similar things, they know each other so well they can even finish the other's thoughts. They even look the same. They would do anything for each other. When Kenzie is in a car accident that keeps her from completing an assignment as a photojournalist, threatening her job and her livelihood, she enlists Makenna's help. If Makenna could only borrow her ID and take her place on the plane, take the pictures, and come back without letting on that she wasn't Kenzie, her job would be saved. It sounded simple enough. What nobody anticipated was how a big, handsome Texas stranger and the Mob figured into the equation.
This is a good book, with characters you'll fall in love with and a plot that keeps the reader hooked from beginning to end. While it can be read as a standalone, it contains some minor cliffhangers, so be prepared to read the sequel when you finish it. While it has no actual sex scenes in it, it has some very sensual scenes that may offend certain individuals. It contains no harsh cursing, with about 15 instances of mild foul language. Four stars.
Becki Willis's new book: The Girl From Her Mirror is an intriguing mystery novel with dynamic characters and a fast-moving plot. When Makenna's best friend Kenze is involved in a serious auto accident and can't fulfill her photojournalist assignment she begs Makenna to take her place. Unwilling yet unable to refuse her best friend, Makenna agrees to impersonate Kenzie. On the plane to Vermont Makenna meets Hardin Kaczmarek a Texas Ranger on an undercover assignment. Little do these two protagonists realize that their lives are about to take a turn for the unforeseeable. This new book by Ms. Willis is a great read and wonderful introduction to her new Mirrors Don't Lie Mystery Series. So read and enjoy it.
This was a goodreads giveaway. What would you be willing to do for a friend? I enjoyed reading this suspenseful romance. I will be keeping an eye out for more from this author.
Mirrors Don't Lie Series is composed of three books concerning twin sisters separate at the age of three. I dislike them both cause of their actions, reactions and stupidity. The story line is full of unrealistic events in order for the story to flow. The dialog sometimes borders on stupid. More thought should have been put into these books because they could have really been great reads. The books do need to be heavily edited. Mafia is uppercase when it refers to the Costra Nostra, otherwise lowercase is OK if it's like the "diaper" mafia wrecking havoc at the child care center. 3*
The Girl from Her Mirror #1 - Well written, but need to be better though through. I've read other books by Ms. Willis and enjoyed them. I was disappointed when she made the character stupid in order to advance the story. I would have found another way for the separation instead of believing a total stranger in a phone call; yep, no face-to-face. She also disregards her instincts about another character. She Googles everyone, but the Ranger after all he's done for and with her?
A few action scenes were awkward, but there's no reason for the author to have experienced what she put her character through, so take with a grain of salt or tolerance. (For example: they're speeding and he wants her to turn left in 100 ft, which by the time he tells her what he wants that exit is long gone.)
There's reasons explained for everything the character didn't do and some got a bit redundant. The flow of the story is continuous and doesn't bog anywhere. Other than a few unrealistic bits (action and dialog), the story is entertaining and the language is clean. I skipped what looked like a sex scene; written sex is so boring but sexual tension is fun. I like the family members and the roommates, all come across as likable. There's no cliffhanger, but the Mafia is still in the picture. 4*
Mirror, Mirror on Her Wall #2 - It's the other sister's turn and she's a terrible person. Not all the secrets were uncovered in book one and this book does well with the clues and investigation, and is fast paced. But too many things weren't realistic and wouldn't occur in reality. The main character is a meadow muffin; self-centered, selfish and irresponsible. She places others, and herself, in danger without a clue or though in her head. She's always so smart and thinks she always right. Of course, she comes out smelling like a rose because the unrealistic events that are written for the story line. In real life, she would have died and the others with her.
Kenzie also can't make up her mind between two men. She's already in love with Travis, yet when she mets pretty boy Craven, she doesn't owe T her loyality or her heart. Say what? She also confuses caring with controlling. He's trying to keep her safe and Ms. Stupidity goes feminist and insulting. SW? Travis the Texas Ranger in love with this twit needs his head examined. Where's his self-esteem when she's treating him like something on the bottom of her shoe after strolling through a pig pen? Texas Rangers are not stupid men and to see him treated as an eejit is an insult to all Rangers. I don't care what body part is thinking when he's around her, he or any self respecting man would not tolerate this behavior. 3*
Light from Her Mirror #3 - I couldn't read any more of this series. The second book just irritated me beyond tolerance. I have read other books by Ms. Willis that I did enjoy and were better written and thought out, so maybe this was an earlier effort before she hit her stride. Because I don't expect improvements, I'll just cheat and give it 3*.
The Girl From Her Mirror: Mirrors Don’t Lie Mystery Series Book 1 is by Becki Willis. This fantastic book starts the three-book series full of mystery, intrigue, and danger. Kenzie Reese and MaKenna Reagan have been best friends since they ran into each other in college. They both were in a bathroom and as they started to leave, they both looked into the mirror and put a hand up to the mirror to the girl they saw there. How unusual was it for two girls to do the exact thing with a mirror. They found they had much in common and became close friends. Kenzie even began calling MeKenna’s parents Mom and Dad. Kenzie had no family. She had finally left home at seventeen; but before that, her Father was so smart that he ignored her and everything around him. Her Mother was cold and remote and harsh with Kenzie. When Kenzie is hurt in a car accident, she persuades Makenna to sub for her in taking photos for a shoot in New Hampshire. It should be an east job and since MaKenna was out of a job, she accepted. Makenna decided to step out her comfort zone to act more like Kenzie. On the plane, she met Hardin Kaczmarek, an undercover Texas Ranger, and they clicked. However, Makenna made sure to introduce herself as Kenzie. This job becomes much more dangerous than Kenzie expected. Someone was following Makenna in hopes of harming her. Luckily for her, Hardin steps up to protect her. However, he is troubled by the lie he told MaKenna. What would happen when she found out he was a Texas Ranger? What will happen to Kenzie and Makenna when they find out the truth about their family?
Mckenna Reagan sets out to do her best friend a favor. Her bestie and roommate, Kenzie Reese is scheduled to leave for a photo shoot in New Hampshire that afternoon for a big news story, and she's been in an accident that requires surgery. Mskenna and Kenzie look so much alike people mistake them for sisters, so though she's hesitant to lie to airport security, the hotel, the magazine for whom the story will be written, she relieves Kenzie's mind and says she'll go. But what luck! The world's best looking man takes the seat right next to her, and they talk all the way to New Hampshire. Then—surprise1—he's staying at her hotel. By the third dy, they both know ther eis some serious chemistry going on between them. Suddenly strange things start to happen. People are crowding into their world, dire warnings are passed on to her, and hints of a life she doesn't recognize keep her mind in a whirl. We know she isn't who she says she is, but who else is hiding their true selves?
Very good romantic suspense. Good writing and descriptive detail—I enjoyed The Girl from Her Mirror. Recommended.
This is a silly romantic suspense. a woman takes her best friend's place on a trip to take some photos for an article. The Kenzie, the best friend, shares a striking resemblance to Mckeena except for hair colour, height and weight. Notwithstanding McKenna manages to get on the plane where she encounters a handsome man en route to the same destination. But things go quickly awry. Cars try to run her off the road and shady characters send her ominous messages to convey to a person she doesn't know. The mutual attraction between her and the handsome stranger grows but it bothers her that it is based on a lie. Could the key be hidden her best friends' troubled past?
This is an okay read. It is predictable and not particularly believable or suspenseful. Ther clues are heavy-handed and the big reveal is really no surprise. Not bad but I wouldn't go out of my way to read the subsequent books in the series.
Makenna and her best friend, Kenzie, looked so much alike that they were practically sisters. But when an accident puts Kenzie in the hospital, Makenna is forced to take her place on a business trip. Pretend you’re me.
For Makenna, this was the perfect opportunity to step out of her boring, little box and be spontaneous.
If you had the chance to be someone else, would you take it? I was intrigued by the concept of pretending to be someone else. It was your basic life swap, and Makenna was nervous about it the whole way. Of course, she would meet a handsome man, and the man thinks she’s somebody else.
Story was, overall, well-written with a rather slow pace. And there was this whole thing with the reflection in the mirror that wasn’t too clear for me. I think this would’ve been better off focusing more on Makenna’s self-discovery. This was an okay read.
When her best friend and roommate is injured in a car accident, Makenna is talked into taking her place on a dream photojournalism assignment. They have always looked like sisters and have successfully played the switch game in the past. This time, however, danger lurks in the mountains of New Hampshire and with the handsome hunk, Hardin by her side, Makenna must escape those who search for her friend’s father while protecting her injured friend and keeping her true identity a secret. I particularly enjoyed the flashback sequences to the little girl who was constantly moved from place to place with a new name and new home. This is an exciting story and while the truth isn’t too hard to guess, how it will impact the lives of all involved kept me reading. I look forward to the next book in the series to continue the adventure.
This book truly spoke to me. It is full of hope and love, along with true friendships and sacrifice, with danger and even terror mixed in along with intrigue. My gosh! This book has it all and the story is told masterfully, never letting the danger and violence take over for too long before returning to some love and comfort.
I don't know how I can tell much about the story without spoiling things for the reader. I'll only say that McKenna and Kenzie find that their life-long friendship was always destined to be magic. And even though there are dangerous people who set out to do them harm, there is a knight in shining armor to save the day. And the ending is a little like a fairy tale.
This is a romantic suspense that could have been much better. The premise is that a photojournalist is injured in a car accident and asks her close friend to impersonate her on a job. From the beginning, my credulity is strained because the photojournalist states that her friend should have no trouble taking the photos because all she has to do is "point and shoot". I'm not a photographer, but I know that it is a skill that an inexperienced person could not have pulled off as a professional. Despite this and other unlikely characters and occurrences, I felt the book was well-paced and I did enjoy the suspense. I also suspected the twist near the end, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment. Warning that this is not a completely clean read, though the one scene is not the focus.
What a story! Every page unravels the pain of a seemingly unloved three year old girl, lonely until she leaves what never felt like a home and goes to college. She and her roommate are as close as sisters and when Kenzie is hurt Makenna fills in for her. That's when her dangerous adventure begins and every page kept me in suspense about what could happen. It's a turbulent romantic suspense adventure and a good one! I'll be continuing this series.
A captivating story about two best friends, Kenzie and Makenna, so much alike, than when Kenzie got in a car accident Makenna agrees to pose as Kenzie and go for an assignment to the White Mountains. But everything spiral out of control when Makenna is in the middle of a very dangerous situation about secrets from Kenzie’s past and she doesn’t know who to trust. The book keep you reading until the end.
This was a very intriguing read. Kenzie is in a wreck and asks her best friend Makenna to pretend to be her for a work related trip. As soon as she’s off the plane, crazy happenings start. She has no idea why this is happening or who to trust. Can she trust her heart with Hardin or is he behind the happenings? There was a lot of stuff going on in this book and I enjoyed trying to figure out why. I did not even come close to figuring it out. A very good, quick mystery!!
Becki did it again. Another great story, a different story line from her other books (where do you get your different plots? Every book I have read (18 so far) has been different). Great story, location (makes me want to visit), and awesome characters. I’m am a bit of a prude, love scene just a tad much, but that’s just me, it was still clean. Moving on to the next book in the series, YEAH!!!
this is a page tuner of a story, she takes her friends place to do a photo shot because she was in a wreck and in hospital the she is almost in a wreck, she becomes friends with the guy from the plane and then things get worse, if you like suspense with romance you willlike the book I was given a copy of the book but this is an honest review
This gripping story about two girls who got separated when they were about three years with it many twists, turns and tension deserves its five star rating for me because I liked it very much. Kenna does however appear to be somewhat of an naive girl. Thrown in a couple of Texas rangers and members of the Italian mob and it becomes a love story with danger and a happy ending.
A romantic suspense story involving twins who were separated at birth. Lots of drama and twists and turns in the storyline some of them very unrealistic, but then it is a fiction book, realism is overrated. All of these things added together make for a very good page turner that you don't want to miss.
I really enjoyed this book with its plot twists and uncertainty of who the main character can trust. I did figure things out a lot faster than our heroine and thought she should have been smart enough to figure some things out for herself a bit faster, but the plot was good and the story well written. I would recommend this one.
This was my first read by Becki Willis and I really liked it. It was well thought out with great characters, both the good and bad ones! There was plenty of intrigue, mystery, twists and turns to the plot, romance and a wonderful surprise at the end. Looking forward to reading the other books in the series.
This book struck all the right chords with me. It's a well plotted out mystery with good characters. There's a great mystery, action and adventure, and some romance. I highly recommend this book and I know I'm moving on to Book 2.
What friends will do for other friends but death? First of a three book series, suspense when you have car chases, threats on your life but It's not your life! What did I get myself into? Very well written with a mixture of a little bit of everything in this story! It's a must read!!
At times some of the adventure seemed a bit hard to believe. But as a whole it kept me interested enough to read it through. The ending was a bit cheesy. Then again it was a romance mystery.
Two best friends, rent an apartment together. The one, gets in a car accident. She asked her bestie, to pretend to be her, so she could do the job that she was hired for. Then, an assassin tries to kill the bestie. All kinds of drama, and a little romance.
