This is a very concise guide to rhythm that might be useful to all beginner musicians, regardless of your instrument. I, at least, as an amateur guitarist who struggles with keeping tempo and playing triplet figures, was able to add its key concepts to my practice and noticed some improvement.

While the last chapters and some of the exercises are drum-specific, the notions presented at the beginning of the book can be applied to music in general. Under the principle of always having a musical idea behind what you do, Moses develops the concepts of internal hearing, the 8/8, and playing off resolution points. Early on, he compares performing as a band to building a house:

"The first step is to have a strong, basic framework. The second step is to add all the detail and decorative work. So the house has two elements: the structural, which is very simple, basic and strong, and the ornamental work. In terms of music, the decorative work is generally the province of the soloist or lead instrument. The drummer and the bass player provide the strong, basic structure."

Moses also emphasizes the importance of maintaining an effective groove and playing in harmony with other musicians over creativity. I think having this type of solid foundation can be helpful for dilettantes such as myself, who are often happy with getting the notes right even if they're playing out of rhythm. Now, when I'm trying to play a song by ear, for example, I make sure I figure out the time signature before the key.
