This book was read as part of an effort to better understand Admiral Rickover, the Father of the Nuclear Navy. It is one of the few books he wrote and I was hoping for an insight into his way of thinking. I dont believe I got that but it was a valuable read nonetheless. The book is structured as a series of short essays on each of the 41 eminent Americans he chose to name the first generation of nuclear-powdered nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarines. Ordered in a chronological sequence it provides a short introduction to American history through its most famous historical figures, from the most obvious (Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Lee, Grant and Roosevelt) to more minor (Nathan Hale, Simon Bolivar and Mariano Vallejo), but all carefully selected for their unique contributions to American history.
Overall a well written and thoughtful history written through America's great people, it has certainly provided some food for thought and future topics to explore.
