For centuries the empire of Roseg has been a neutral haven where sorcerers only collect oddities, witches make tea, and unicorns are confined to fairy tales.
When the emperor vanishes, his daughter Elizabeth must trade in her cavalry breeches for impractical dresses, and find a husband before her warmonger cousin seizes the throne. She has the support of Count Seon, and the friendship of Lady Isabella, whose plans to avoid marriage rely on becoming invaluable to the future empress.
The war in the east has spread to Roseg’s borders, disrupting trade and filling the cities with refugees. As the palace floods with diplomats, spies, and suitors, everyone must face their shifting reality. A series of unexplained stabbings has the sorcerers concerned. And to top it all off, the available suitors are completely unsuitable.
I enjoyed this story so much. The characters are a delight that grew on me more and more as the story progressed. I started out not too fond of the suitors, but their antics and eventual camaraderie became one of my favorite parts of the book. I loved the building relationship between Elizabeth and Isabella and how their love had to find a way to survive despite the political situation of the suitors and the throne. And the animals! Gosh, the author's love for animals is vivid with each and every one that is introduced. I thoroughly enjoyed the horse riding scenes (and learned a lot about riding -- who would have thought a fantasy book would be educational!) and the unicorn was such a cool character. I hope to be able to read more about this world in the future!
I adored not only the read but its world. The characters are a delight that grew on me more and more as the story progressed. I recommend the read I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of The Roseg Unicorn
This is a great read - I really enjoyed it. Interesting characters I enjoyed following. Fun world I want to live in! Can't wait for the next one in the series.
