Sick Day

Rate this book
Hope and Cameron made a five-year promise before college. Years pass and they never see each other again. But then one month before his planned wedding to Riley, Cameron looks outside and sees Hope in the pouring rain, watching him.

Now, three years later, Cam has one day – a sick day on this last Friday of summer – to convince the one woman whose very existence breaths life into his lungs, that sometimes love like theirs actually does exist, and it’s that kind of love that lives forever, no matter how hard you fight to forget about it and move on.

From the author of non friction and Hope, Sick Day follows one man’s day-long attempt to persuade the love of his life that sometimes it’s okay to break promises if it means keeping the ones that count.

Morgan Parker

Morgan Parker is the pen name for a shy and introverted former banker. Given the nature of his former career and his unique childhood upbringing in a trendy, white-collar town West of Toronto, Mr. Parker made up plenty of stories to stay employed and to avoid the responsibilities of adulthood. His novels are a product of those stories.

Mr. Parker believes that all great novels involve realistic characters, motives and love stories. He tries (really hard) to emulate his favorite authors while writing his own novels. He stresses that all of his tales and characters are fictional in nature and welcomes all kinds of feedback, even the worst kind, so that he might continue to develop and grow as an author.

When Mr. Parker isn't writing, he likes to read and watch movies. As a serial napper, he has been known to convert corporate prayer rooms and quiet areas into common siesta zones. He believes in hibernation.

This will forever be one of those books where my words will ever only fail to do justice to appreciate the way it made me feel. For the complete acceptance of finding pieces outside my comfort zone is something I have to yet to embrace fully.

And dying like that—with the last image you see being the man that you love…a happy ending despite the absence of a happily ever after…I…Hope—I hope for that kind of death. No, for that kind of life for everyone

Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall in love and become high school sweethearts. Boy and girl have to leave for different colleges, so boy and girl make a promise, promise gets broken. Girl comes back to find boy engaged. Boy breaks girl, but has girl already broken boy?
Boy and girl (aka Cam and Hope) have a love that is either so strong or so whacked out that it continues to pull them back to each other. No matter how much hurt it's causing them, they just can't stop. The first time Hope comes back, Cam is engaged to Riley; the second time she comes back, they're married. I didn't know which love to root for. Cam is happy with Riley, he loves her, but the love he feels for her could never touch the love he feels for Hope. Hope consumes his heart, whereas Riley only fills a tiny bit of the gaping hole that Hope has left behind. This book was so amazing, there is a very beautiful poem in this book that will make you rethink love, it did for me anyway. It's sad and beautiful and I hate to say it, but it has a lot of truth in it. I love how this book took you back and forth through time, it showed you every aspect as to why things had turned out as they did. Sick Day consumed me, it chewed me up and spit me out, leaving me a blubbering mess. It was perfection. I had so many emotions running through me while reading this book, anger, sadness, love, hopefulness and happiness. So many more but too many to explain.
I felt anger because Cam and Hope had me so pissed off throughout the whole book. They couldn't seem to get their crap together! They just kept hurting one another, mostly Hope though. Not that they weren't both to blame, but she was a piece of work.
I felt sadness because Riley, in my opinion, didn't deserve what was happening behind her back. She loved Cam and was good to him. With that being said, you can't help what your heart feels. When your heart pulls you, it's kind of hard not to follow it. You can always refuse the call, live without what it really yearns for, but what kind of living is that? It's like living a lie, a half life. I also felt frustration towards Riley too. She knew about Hope before they got married, she had a full view of what was to come, but she married him anyway. Grrrr.
I felt love, so much love that I thought I would burst! Cam and Hope's love, no matter how crazy and messed up it seemed, was beautiful. When they were together and on the same page, it was great. You prayed that it would work. That they could stop being fucktarts and just let their love take them.
The strongest emotions I felt were hopefulness and happiness. Funny thing is that it came from the epilogue. Hopeful for a love that strong, that beautiful and that everlasting actually does exist. That it's not just a fairy tale and it's out there waiting to be found. Not likely but maybe. We can hope, right? This book made me ugly cry harder than I have in a very long time, but each tear was a happy tear with just a touch of sadness. This book has truly touched me. If I could give it 10 stars I would, but alas, the highest I can give it is 5. I easily give Sick Day 5☆☆☆☆☆

I was offered this one via the author in exchange for a review.
I loved the blurb and it's got some really great reviews so my hopes were high.

I'll be honest, I'm at 2.5 stars. I very quickly started to feel the lines appearing on my forehead as I struggled to connect with both the plot and the characters. It sort of droned on and on without getting anywhere. The way it moved back and forth through time started to get on my nerves and I can't help thinking that a better ending would have been sans that HEA.

Possibly it'd work well on audiobook? Just not for me, but thanks for the opportunity to read it :)

This was such a beautifully written story. I couldn’t get enough of Sick Day. I anticipated its release since I found out about it and the author never let me down. Sick Day was just as amazing as Hope and Non Friction. I loved that Hope and Cameron’s story was so similar to “Our Story” because it has such a special place in my heart and that’s what keeps me coming back for more of Morgan Parker’s writing.

Hope was a wonderful girl. I really loved her passion for the things she believed in. That being said let me say that she seriously drove me completely crazy while reading this book. She was definitely one stubborn person who just wouldn’t open up her eyes and see what was right in front of her which drove me mad. I just wanted her to see what I saw. That she was so lucky to be loved by Cameron.

Cameron is an AMAZING man. He reminded me so much of Oliver, but he also was very different. He was so caring, loving and just overall wonderful. I couldn’t help but love this character for all that he was. I felt bad for him for everything he endured and lost, but I admired how much he kept fighting and never gave up. He never gave up HOPE that he would show Hope he loved her and she belonged to him. She was his soul mate.

The story is worth reading, it’s a remarkable and an alluring story that will have you never putting it down. It will also tug at your heart strings. It broke my heart more than once and I cried a few times while reading. The story line and all that it implies will keep you hooked. It’s very touching and the ending will leave you bawling. This writer’s work is just delightful and always seems to touch my heart. If you haven’t read Non Friction or Hope make sure you read them before Sick Day, I think they help you fill in all the missing pieces.

Once again Morgan Parker gave me a wonderfully unique experience when I read Sick Day. When I say unique I truly mean it, he writes with his own unique style and charisma. I can only describe his talent as rare. Morgan doesn't believe in the necessity of happy ever afters, he sees the reality of life and writes about it perfectly. He always makes me sit back and think about the scenario, no matter what he's writing about. I have read all his work and I'm tempted to say this is his best to date.

"Even if we never see each other again,"I admit as calmly as my raging disappointment will allow, you're in this as deep as I am, Hope. It's inescapable."

The characters felt like my friends and family as I've watched their journey for so long. I've been one step behind them right from the start and I was invested and rooting for them. There were many times I felt conflicted whilst reading. I felt pain for the injured parties but I also felt pain for the characters inflicting. I found myself reasoning with them and understanding why, but still felt split and confused, at times in turmoil. So many times I had to step back to take a breather and just reflect. This is not a fluffy romance, it's definitely got grit and messed with my mind. I got lost in my thoughts it felt so real.

"I felt her heart beating erratically underneath her chest, her breathing deepening. She grabbed my free hand and brought it to her mouth, sucking gently on my fingers."

There's some beautifully written lines in this novel, I read them over and over again and had to stop and think at times that these beautiful romantic lines were written by Morgan, this crazy funny man I know and love so well. (Bravo Morgan Parker for writing this powerful story, I absolutely loved it). Morgan is so well known for his humour, and yes it's still there, you recognise him immediately but I think he excelled himself this time by proving he could write a deep and emotional novel with stylish and elegant words. In my opinion this is Morgan's most romantic novel, it pulled at my heartstrings and the connection between the characters was palpable. He without a doubt had these characters embedded deep in his mind to create such a courageous love story.

"I had one part of my heart that existed for the life that Riley gave me. It wasn't the life of happiness I had envisioned for myself, wasn't the life you're giving me. But it was a life. It was one small part of me, of my heart."

I heaved a deep breath

"The other part of my heart, though? It's the part reserved for you, for all of the perfection and living that you made possible, that you promised. And that's what it is , it's my hope. The hope that you will find me, just like you have. The hope that you will love me always, just like you do."

The Epilogue...

I love a book that has an epilogue and this epilogue killed me perfectly! I got my answers, whether I liked them or not. I felt at peace yet saddened. I felt like there was always 'HOPE' for anyone. I felt like we can all live in 'HOPE'. I felt like 'HOPE' is all we have.

Sick Day my friends will make you laugh and will make you cry. It will make you question the meaning of love. The meaning of soul mates. It will leave you deep in thought and working it all out for yourselves.

**Sick Day can be read as a stand alone. However, Morgan Parker’s two previous books, Non Friction and Hope have some story elements that are tied to Sick Day. Not having read these two will not affect the Sick Day story line at all.

I’ve read a lot of cheating books. I don’t have a problem with it…reading it…that is!! LOL

This book was different. It wasn’t all about the sex or all the normal cheating stuff we read nowadays. This book was more on the emotional side of the cheating.

Cameron & Hope have major history. Being each other’s first loves.
They make promises to each other before going off to different colleges.
Promises that ultimately will be broken.

Both moving on with their lives… And when they least expect it…
They come back into each other lives & to which sets off a range of emotions for both of them.
Doing things to hurt other people. But, still always ending up badly for both of them.

Hmmm…

I really wasn’t feeling Hope. I know Cameron messed up things in the way he left Hope.
(He really was an asshole for how he did it!)
what he did is all his fault as to why the relationship went south… Between Hope & himself.
He set Hope up for a life time of hurt & self doubt.
But… Every time their paths crossed…
She played this game that all women play.
The “prove how bad you want me game”
show me, tell me, fight for me.

I don’t know… Every time Cameron would try to show her… Talk to her…

She was like the ice queen. She hardly showed Cameron anything. Maybe… That’s why I couldn’t really get into her.
It’s like she wanted him… But she just couldn’t let her self relax & enjoy him.. Because she was still so upset for what he did to her all those years ago.

I also thought Cameron was extremely selfish. I wasn’t really feeling him either….lol
I would not be able to forgive him. What he did to Hope… Is truly unbelievable & very hurtful. Especially…because they were so in love!
How can you do that to the person you love??
How can anyone get past that??!!
I know I couldn’t!!

And as for Riley… She married a man that she knew was in love with another women. I think if you go into a marriage with that kind of information…. Your just setting yourself up for heart ache. You have no one to blame but yourself.

But…I’m not going to lie….

This book had me aggravated and frustrated! I just wanted to scream at both of them!!!…lol

I think a lot of people can relate to a book like this… The “ones that got away”… The “what if’s”. I think those two questions could eat a person alive! Causing you to sit down and think about your past. What if you did things differently or handled things differently.
I think a lot has to do with the way you handled the situation with that certain person you did those things to. To me….It’s regret. It’s hard to move on from that.

Cameron handled things poorly & Hope couldn’t move on.

In the end…I felt good about how the book ended. It was kind of sad. But.. It all worked out.

I really like how the book flowed. I liked how it went back & forth between the past & the present.
Giving you the whole story. I was bouncing back-and-forth with my emotions between Cameron & Hope.
Over all it was a good read!

would I read more books by this author…Yes, I would!!

As always, I aim to give an honest review without giving any spoilers

Prior to reading "Sick Day", I had read "Non Friction" and "Hope", so I had become familiar with some of the characters and story lines in this book.

Both of these characters, Cameron and Hope, go through heart wrenching emotions-- and as a reader, they take us along on that ride.

The subject is a "touchy" subject for some, but author Morgan Parker creates an amazing story here, as he also did in his prior works. He's able to make the reader "experience" the story, and thus make us see where the characters' decision-making stems from.

This is definitely an emotional read. There is humor too, though, so you'll get some breaks from the teary moments

I highly recommend this book. Once I started reading it, I found myself so hooked that I had a hard time putting it down to get sleep.

Five stars, incredibly well-deserved. Bravo, Mr. Parker.

Another "favorite" added to my list.

In this creative story we find sometimes love is the common denominator that filters into a blood stream and takes control of emotional and physical functions. Sometimes one cannot sleep, the mind continues to dredge up memories of past encounters. One cannot eat for our bodies are full of emotional turmoil and yet somewhat empty for want of more... what could have been... what could be...

Cameron is desperate to find a missing piece of his life, he decides to take drastic measures and take a Sick Day from work to conquer a heart worth living for. Hope McManus thinks she is stable enough to settle down with someone yet she finds she must have Closure from her past with the only man she ever loved in order to end this unsettled feeling.

Will this long ago promise survive the test of time. Will these long ago lovers reconnect. Will love last. Let's find out in this drama filled romantic tale of passion, woe and LOVE reunited.

Thank you Morgan Parker!

I <3 MP's stories.

Sick Day

Every time I sit down to write a review of a particularly good book, I struggle to find the words to do it justice. There a couple of authors whose writing I struggle to describe as eloquently and articulately as they have written their story. Morgan Parker is one such writer. And the more I read from these types of readers the more it seems I search for the spot where they are going to falter and prove that they cannot continue to write these amazing stories.
What I just finished reading shows me that Morgan Parker is determined to squash my theory because SICK DAY was thoughtfully written, with the right amount of quirk and something that defines his writing, separating from other books out there. And it was true. The truest of a love story—in all its selfishness, uncertainty, anger, sadness and heart. This wasn’t the perfect story because there has yet to be such a thing in my opinion. Not perfectly written but perfectly told. And the words that Morgan Parker puts to paper perfectly resonates with me.
One of the things Parker is great at doing is allowing you to feel a myriad of emotions not only throughout his story but even with one paragraph or one line. And what I love about that is matters of the heart do the same thing.
There were definitely a couple of words or phrases I felt were overused and I do remember reading one of them and actually rolling my eyes thinking, “Change it up buddy. We get it.” Did this alter my enjoyment of the overall story? Nah not at all. It’s just one of those things that isn’t always caught when it goes to editing and a final read through.
I don't normally mention any specific scenes in a book but the elevator scene... Loved it!!! I don't blush but something about the dirty innocence of it made me heat up. You'll have to read Sick Day for the specifics.
Honestly when I read a Morgan Parker story such as Sick Day, I am more invested in the questions that are invoked. There is always one scene in any of his booksthat makes me want to tear apart the book page by page searching for an answer. The big question of “What does this mean? and “Why did you write this in here?” always has me stewing for days after reading it. LOVE THIS ASPECT!!! It is written with intent with almost an out of the blue approach to it. I can’t even explain it but is a big reason why I love his stories. His words display the weaknesses in human nature beautifully. Making it not something we should be ashamed of or otherwise but that this is how we are. This is what we do when our heart is at stake.
Reviewing a Morgan Parker book is not complete without mentioning that quite possibly his personal introspect on love and relationships—his books aren’t cookie cutter like so many out there. His formula isn’t the same, yet what I feel, is. When I had finished Sick Day, my thoughts and theories on what drives us to love in the first place, what makes us give up love (not to be mistaken with give up on love), what makes us chase a first love or the ideals of a first love and what makes us think that our love is more important all came rushing together. These are things we can analyze and beat to death but ultimately may never come up with a definitive answer. What I love is that I can look on my own history of love (with a smile on my face) and know that it doesn’t matter if we are still looking for it or think we have found the perfect love, we must continue to evolve our love, keep chasing love, and most definitely never give up on love.
SICK DAY is an incredible journey and example of love that makes you irrational, selfish, push the limits, and risk everything in your life for one sick day—one chance at proving that the truest form of love exists.

Sick Day is the first book that I have read by Morgan Parker and it won't be my last. The best way to describe this story, is unique. It is not your typical love story in my opinion. It is an awesome story about beginning love, losing love and finding that love all over again. I found it to be well written and thought provoking. I will admit I had a tough time getting into it at first. I had to put it down several times, because I became frustrated with the characters.

Hope and Cam have best friends and soul mates since high school. When college separates them, they promise to be together in the end. But when Cam does not hear from Hope, he begins to move forward with his life, pushing through the hurt and loss of her love. He opens his heart up to Riley. She is a breath of fresh air. He begins to see a future with her. But, Hope is never very far from his thoughts. He will always love her. When a chance meeting throws him and Hope back together, he vows to find a way to make their life together work. But, Hope has also moved on. So Cameron pulls out all the stops, jeopardizing his career and marriage to Riley, all to win Hope back.

Told in both their present lives and past lives. We find the story going back and forth between the two. Giving the reader a glimpse into how their lives took various turns from the time they parted ways after high school. I thought the character development was great. Everyone has had that one love in their life, that they will never forget. That one that got away. Who we have such a deep emotional connection too. Our soul mate. Sick Day is an emotional roller coaster ride. I fell in love with the characters and wanted more than anything for Cam and Hope to be together in the end. Was their love strong enough to see them through all the baggage that they both carried? Could they put aside all the hurt and frustration that they has caused one another over the years? Would they finally come together and live the life that they were meant to, together and be happy. Or would more obstacles block their road to happiness? I highly recommend Sick Day. If you are looking for a great love story that spans a lifetime, than this book is for you.

***I was gifted a copy of this book for free from Morgan Parker in exchange for an honest review.

Morgan Parker continues to excel in his writing with Sick Day!

Sick Day is the love story of Cameron & Hope with a few tidbits of Oliver & Olivia’s story mixed in (The characters Oliver & Olivia can be found in Non Friction & Hope as sub characters for the book written by the main character Morgan Barker in Non Friction.) Cameron & Hope’s story encompasses their relationship as high school sweethearts through today. You will need to pay attention as Morgan will have you weaving through their lives – at times in the current & at other times in the past. But, oh what a story he weaves……..

Cameron has one day to convince Hope that their love is the real deal. One Sick Day! Can he do it?

My heart & soul were entwined with this story within 2 chapters. I wanted this couple to make it by surpassing all obstacles. Cameron is married. Hope is engaged.

Here is a favorite from the book as Cameron is trying to convince Hope to take the Sick Day. My heart was pounding with his. I think I even had my fingers & toes crossed for him……..
*******
“We need this day. Just the two of us. I’ve made all of the arrangements for today, and I swear, if it’s the last thing I do for you,for the woman I love more than any human should be allowed to love, that’s fine.” I reach out and nudge her chin again, forcing her to stare straight into my eyes. “Hope, please.” I motion at the space between us. “This is the worst kind of love out there.” I can practically fell her heart pounding, and all I’m holding is her hand. I know this because my chest wants to burst, too.
*******

Included in the book is a poem written by the character of Hope (I believe....). Please take a moment to relish this poem. I believe….Morgan Parker’s talent is all encompassing.

You will laugh, you will get angry, you will smile & yes, you will cry with the characters as you do for each of Morgan’s books. I believe….you will LOVE it as much as I did, no I do…….

I believe….I am looking forward to Morgan Parker’s next book……………….

This is a powerful story about a couple with a love so strong, they keep finding their way back to one another, regardless of how much time has passed.

Hope and Cameron met in high school and he made a promise that they would be together forever. They ended up at different colleges and their goal was to meet up one year after. But, Cameron, just disappeared from Hope's life after his first semester. I still don't understand how he could just stop talking to her! He felt a void without her in his life and ended up meeting someone else. Seven years later, Hope, shows up in Chicago only to find that, Cameron, is engaged. That doesn't stop their passion and love from being reignited though.

Somehow, they lose touch again and it's several years before they're brought back together. It's a crazy and fiery reoccurrence. Cameron, is shocked when he runs into, Hope, once again years later in Chicago and discovers that she works in the same building as him. He's now married and she's engaged, but that doesn't stop either one of them. Their love is undeniable. He convinces her to take a sick day, so he can prove to her they belong together. It's his last chance before she moves to California with her fiancé.
"If we walk away, we leave everything. And that's now how I want to live, Hope. I can't have two halves of one life. One that belongs exclusively to you, and the other that belongs to the hope of replacing you. I can't...I can't...exist without you."
While I found the story a little bit confusing in the beginning, I thought it unfolded in an interesting way. The timeline switches from flashbacks of the past to the present. This is the first book I've read from, Morgan Parker. It can be read as a standalone, but I wish I had read his other books first, so I had more of a background on the characters and Our Story. I really enjoyed Morgan's writing and look forward to reading his other books. I highly recommend this one!

I think this might be my favorite Morgan Parker book to date. Morgan just knows how to write these beautifully written wonderful story. I didn't want to put this book down. It grabbed a hold of me and didn't want to let go and I was good with that.

This is a story about Hope and Cameron. Cameron had one day to show Hope that they were meant to be and that the love between them would never go away. So he embarks on a plan to make her see that before she leaves him forever. This was not a fluffy story. It was a very real love story that showed the "truth" of a relationship. The story goes back and forth between the present day and their past so that you can get the full tale of their relationship. And I loved that because I was able to see what exactly they meant to each other and their lives progressed. I don't want to give too much away because I believe that readers need to experience this lovely story for themselves. You will go through a gauntlet of emotions but they are well worth it. At the end, you will smile and love the way this story goes.

I have become a fan of Morgan Parker's through his previous work of Non-friction and Hope and now I am an even bigger one. Thank you Morgan for writing this amazing story. I loved every minute of this story and I highly recommend it! It will be an even better experience by reading Non-friction and Hope as well. Go and pick up this story and you will not be disappointed. I loved everything about this book!

I gave this book 5 Stars.

Morgan has done it again.
Hope and Cameron have made each other a promise in college, a promise broken because they make it and then they never see each other again. Now years later Cameron needs to convince Hope that their love is worth fighting for that it is a once in a lifetime love that only comes along once in a great while. A true love. He has one day to do it. He calls in Sick and tries to convince the woman he loves, the woman promised to another man, and himself promised to another woman that they are meant to be together can he do it??

I loved this book.. I love all of Morgan's books it is like reading a real life happening in the now story. It feels like he is telling his story and not just writing a book about characters that go away when he is finished. I was captured from the first page and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen at the end. I also love Morgan's books because his HEA might not be yours. He writes how he feels and sometimes you are left saying REALLY? And that is awesome! Thank you so much Morgan for wonderful stories! Please never stop writing, I promise to never stop reading them. <3

Sick Day by Morgan Parker

I love Morgan's writing style first off. The man can write.
So here is my review of Sick Day.....
I had so many mixed emotions reading this book. It is realistic and down to earth, the purest form of a love story.
Hope and Cameron have been high school sweet hearts till they make this
five-year promise before college. Years pass and they never see each other again. But then one month before Cam's planned wedding to Riley, He looks outside and sees Hope in the pouring rain, watching him. This event changes everything for Cam and his world is flipped upside down.Time passes by and they come in and out of each others paths but it not until Cam has one day a sick day to convince the one woman whose very existence breaths life into his lungs, that sometimes love like theirs actually does exist, and it’s that kind of love that lives forever, no matter how hard you fight to forget about it and move on.

While reading this book you get a glimpse of "Our Story" that Hope gives to Cam.. Reading what was in that story and compare it to Cam and Hope's you think it was their story... Well I'm not telling you!! You need to pick up this copy of Sick Day and give Mr. Morgan Parker some special love.

I would have to say this is defiantly 5 out of 5 stars.

Although Sick Day is a Stand alone, I would recommend Hope before reading Sick Day, so you have an understanding of the characters and their back story.

Sick Day.....oh my goodness, although dealing with cheating,
Morgan writes from the deeper side of it, the pure emotional need of the two people that were mean't to be together, but went on different journeys, met other people and didn't quite cut the tie that held them together. We get the angst side, but from the everyday, what we would do to grab those moments, when that tie is pulled again....even when grown adults and know the consequences.

Morgan gives us real life with wrapped in a wonderful story packed with emotion.

I don't know where Morgan gets his emotional tap from, but it is from the heart that is for sure. Reading parts of this were so emotional and that is what i want from a book, to connect with the characters and then to feel what a character feels, Hope the novella did it, Sick Day....just did it.

My favourite parts / lines, there have been so many, but this one felt like a hug from a book........ 'Open your eyes' i hear her whisper...

and my tears start flowing......

WOW!!! First off I hope I write this review and it makes sense to people. I'm not a blogger just just a chick who really liked this book.
It's a standalone but It all started in Non-Friction and continued in Hope and now the journey ended in Sick Day!!!
It took all I had not to skip to the end to find out what happens in this book. I got my answers in Hope and Cam's relationship. I felt every emotion Cameron had for Hope through the years. Even though there were broken promises and unfair events that made me want them together, in parts of the book there were parts where I wanted to strangled them both for wasting time. I laughed and cried in the story's twist.
Looking forward to more books from him

5 beautiful, tearful stars!

I was gifted a copy of this book for an honest review. I am a reviewer for Crazy Daisy Book Whore. I never cry...and I cried. Thank you, Morgan Parker, for this amazing story! I now know why you love it so much. It is very different from your other books which makes me love it even more. Amazing, beautiful, heart wrenching, and soulful; I didn't want to put it down, but I didn't want it to end either. Never have I felt like I didn't want to get to the end of a book and was so surprised at what happened. Completely unexpected ending which makes it so much more worth the read. I loved this book!

I really enjoyed this book! You want these characters to get together, but you feel the hurt and loss that seperates them. It is a story we can all relate to. Is there that one person who you believe you were meant to be with? If you had one day to convince them that you should be together would you take it? I know I would! Or if the one who you thought you were meant to be with comes back for one more try? I love books that make you think & are well written! You get both with this book. I will be snuggling up with Mr. Parker's other books this weekend. He is a breath of fresh air in this normally female dominated world.

Review originally posted at Ramblings From This Chick

Sick Day is my first read by Morgan Parker, and I will admit that this story was unlike any I have ever read before. I definitely wouldn't call this your typical romance, and it was really unique. This book flashes back and forth in time, with the present taking place in a single day. I will admit that I was interested to see what all had happened in the past that led to the point of where we were in the future, but I did have a tough time getting into this one. I kept having to put this one down and walk away for awhile, and a lot of the time I felt like I didn't have a clue what was going on.

Hope and Cameron made a promise to each other before Cameron left for college. They would get married in five years and live their lives happily ever after. But then Hope starts pushing Cameron away and Cameron stops responding to Hope. Years go by without a word between them. Cameron moves on with Riley, who he met while in college. She was the bright spot that got him through, even if his feelings for Hope never went away. One month before Cameron and Riley's wedding, Hope reappears outside of their house and is standing in the rain watching Cameron. Three years after that, Cameron and Riley are married but he is still reeling from another encounter with Hope a few months back. He decides to take a sick day in order to convince Hope once and for all that they belong together, before she moves out west with her fiance.

I'll be honest, both Cameron and Hope drove me nuts. They were both completely ridiculous at times, and made horrible decisions. Honestly, I found their relationship pretty toxic and I couldn't figure out why they each ran so hot and cold. Cameron seemed to be the warmer of the two, and he was determined to show her that they belonged together. He wouldn't take no for an answer this time around, and pursued her relentlessly. I liked that he didn't let anything stop him because he loved her so much, but I thought that he did handle things poorly on more than one occasion. Hope was a character that I didn't connect with at all. She was the one who had set this all in motion when she appeared randomly at Cameron's house, and yet she repeatedly pushed him away after that. I don't understand why she would continue to spend time with him and show up, when she would just flip a switch and run away right after. I thought it was clear that they had a connection, and there were always feelings between them. I really have no clue why they did the things they did, and it was hard to really get behind them. I also felt really badly for Riley and Matt. They didn't deserve what they got, and I couldn't believe that either of them put up with things for as long as they did.

Besides the issues I had with the characters and the slow pacing of the book, my biggest problem was that I spent much of this story completely confused. I often times got lost between the switch from past to present with the many different timelines going on at once. We not only had the present and 3 years ago, but we also got parts from 2 months ago as well as high school and college. It got to be really hard to keep them all straight, especially with the addition of the story that Hope had sent to Cameron in an email. I just felt like it was too much to keep track of and it made this one hard to really ever sink into. It felt choppy and disjointed to me and was why this one didn't hold my interest for long. I will admit though that I was intrigued to see not only where they would end up, but how they got there and that is what kept me reading this one. I think that this book just wasn't for me, and wasn't what I had been expecting. I think if you are looking for a different story with a romance that takes place over many years and is about not only love found but also love lost and consequences that you might give this one a shot. I know a lot of people really enjoy Morgan Parker's books, and I think this one will be enjoyed by many. For me personally though, I will possibly try another of Morgan's books in the future in the hopes that I will connect better than I did with Hope and Cameron.

Oh, dear God in Heaven. Morgan Parker is one of this century's most incredible writers. I have had the privilege of reading and reviewing all of Morgan's novels and the writing in Sick Day doesn't disappoint.

Once again Morgan has written a masterpiece that has lodged itself in my soul. I have never know anyone that was so prolific a writer in my short tenure as a reviewer, but Morgan Parker is definitely that author!

“I believe,” I say, just loudly enough to catch her attention. “I believe you live once and that better opportunities are lost on second chances. I believe true love is about as real as Santa Claus, but ‘tis the season, so let’s play this game... I believe that you fall in ‘love’ with the person who lets you love him or her the way you want, on your terms. I believe if someone says he ‘loves you more than air,’ he’s lying to you. I believe that love is not about forgiveness. It’s about acceptance, and acceptance keeps relationships alive. I believe in the stories that are never told. I believe that if you have to fight for love, you’re trying to force a square peg into a round hole. I believe that your flaws are what make you beautiful. Deal with it.”

“Cameron,” she sighs, but I see the glint of recognition in her eyes. “What are you doing?”

I ignore her and continue reading from the page. “I believe that two people are just that— two people. I believe that two married people are two individuals with one shared goal and one shared delusion. I believe delusions are a good thing until you start involving drugs, threesomes, and whips. Stay pure. I believe that in your heart, you have blood not love. And that blood is to the heart what ideas, not love, are to the mind. I believe that happy endings happen in real life when I fall asleep, thinking of the smiles on the faces of the children I want to have. I believe that all stories are written for me —that same story means something different for you, and that’s okay. I believe in freedom for everyone; everyone has the right to hunt or to hide or both. I believe that mothers are sacred, and anyone who tells a mother what to do has self-esteem issues. I believe that true character gets revealed in actions, not in what someone says about himself. I believe that ‘promise’ is one word, and any one word means nothing. I believe that if you never hurt, you never find happiness; the bigger you hurt, the bigger your happiness. I believe in friendships that last a lifetime and in friends that support you even when you are dead wrong. I believe that most of the decisions you make are the wrong ones. So celebrate your victories, celebrate hard because they’re rare. I believe that if you can make decisions objectively, you will never be wrong. Or hurt. Or happy. I believe that we cry for ourselves, not for others. I believe that tears are a lot like rage— you need to get that poison out of your system periodically, or it will kill you.”

“Cameron, of course I remember this.” She pulls at her collar and shakes her head at me, her face a little red at having heard the words she had written to me so long ago. “Are you happy now? Happy I remember? Now can we forget about it and get out of here?”

“Just let me finish,” I insist, dropping my attention back to the page. “I believe that when you die, you die alone, and…” I pause because this part always killed me. “And I believe that goodbyes are forever.”

This is one of the most incredible prose ever written! And the love pouring from Cam to Hope leaves me feeling so lost, so helpless, so alone in my mortal relationship here on this earth. Surely a love of this depth is a thing of Angels and Heaven above.

If you take the time to read this book, you won't regret it. And if it doesn't touch your heart, this love, I don't know what to say.

This is my new, most favorite book and I highly recommend it with a set of five glowing, gold stars!

What would you do to get back the love you lost? What price would be too high? Would you break your marital vows? Would you risk your livelihood, your reputation and the pain you would be inflicting on others? Would you pursue the object of your love, even when they ask you to stop?

Sick Day by Morgan Parker is a tale of lost love, of rekindling that love at any cost, of living to be with the one you were destined to be with. Cameron and Hope have that kind of love, one that blossomed in high school and neither time nor distance has cooled its ardor. Throughout this amazingly tragic love story, I often questioned if Cameron and Hope had the right idea, to live in the moment, shoot for the stars, for that one special connection to make the perfect union and if it just involved them, I would be thrilled. Cameron had a family, Hope was in a long term relationship, had they reached their breaking point? No matter the reason, infidelity just sits wrong with me. Do things in the correct order, make sure you are finished with one relationship before seeking out another.

That said, Morgan Parker has not colored his tale with rosy hues of angelic bliss, but has carved out jagged edges with a dull blade. Love often brings pain, unintentional or not. He has told of fictional characters that mirror reality. Life is full of what ifs, why nots and should haves. Is it better to miss out on true happiness, even if it is for a brief time? His style of writing is bold, direct and the blemishes are not covered with concealer. No matter how I personally felt about what was happening, I was drawn to the heart of this story by the magnetic sense of writing style possessed by this author who is brutally honest and forthright. Had I known there were previous book s with background information, I would have definitely read them first, with the hope that the dynamics of these two characters would have been easier to understand.

FINALLY! It. Is. Here!!

My first thought when I completed this book was, “Morgan Parker, I’m not very happy with you.” And I told him so. He made me cry…again! And if I’m being completely honest, although I’ve completed a few books since finishing Sick Day; I’m still in an overall ‘funk’ and I blame Morgan. Now, to most people, I may not be painting a very pretty picture. And, I guess I’m not. Sick Day isn’t flowers and unicorns. It’s gritty. Real life, yuck. But underneath it, there is a beautiful undying love story. One that, in case you missed it; made me cry!!!

“I know your fears. But sometimes the best decisions are the ones we don’t make ourselves. So I’ll make the decisions tonight.”

This story teeters on the love of two people that made a promise to one another when they were seniors in high school. Cameron and Hope were never meant to be apart after college. Their plan was to go off to school and find one another when they finished. But as life got in the way, that promise became something of a mythical creature. Cameron found Riley and Hope, well, Hope found the ‘old guy.’

Throughout life, Cameron and Hope have found each other when lease expected. Almost as if their love had a gravitational pull on them. But the timing never seemed to work. However, even timing and the inconvenience of it, didn’t stop them from becoming one (doing the dirty deed). The love they have for one another is stronger than an ocean’s under current. It is unwavering, unyielding, and unsympathetic to their partners. In fact it is the “worst kind of love out there.”

‘”This love,” I tell her, “is the kind that destroys people.”’

This is a gut wrenching read. Not for the reasons you think. Infidelity isn’t fun; not to experience, and most certainly not to read. However, Morgan has a way of writing that will have you cheering for the wrong because it IS what is right. The back and forth, push and pull, and the anger (because there is anger, how can there not be) is all worth it. There is wit, charm, smut and a beautiful car (yes I said car) that will leave you drooling for more and force you to turn the next page and the next and the next…you get (I HOPE, pun intended).

This book, this story, this love, is one-click worthy and five stars laudable!!

We were honoured to receive a copy of Sick Day in exchange for our honest opinion, so thank-you.

Morgan Parker has ~ Goodreadsit, again. We read Non Friction and he smashed it, we read Hope and he won us over again . . . when we heard there was another story on the way, we said, fine bring it and boy did he BRING IT.

I am a big fan of Morgan Parker. I don’t know quite what it is but his stories are just something else. Real and gritty. Happy endings are not always possible and this is what Morgan brings us. The harsh truths. The up’s and downs of true romance, an unstoppable force that is inevitable but surely comes at the wrong time. Now, I know that may sound depressing BUT his stories are anything but.

The characters connect with the reader so we empathise with their every emotion but not too deeply that we are blind to reality. His characters aren’t dumb. They know and we know, you can’t always get what you want. It’s just not that simple sometimes.

There are some beautiful moments in Sick Day that squeezed at my heart. Words that will stick with you even after you have finished reading.

"Life without him was a silent film."

"I believe that if someone says he loves you more than air, he's lying to you."

“i believe that “love” is not about forgiveness, it’s about acceptance, and acceptance keeps relationships alive.”

I always say it but I love how Morgan’s stories intertwine. It works so wonderfully and it feels like catching up with old friends even if it is just a small snippet into other character’s lives.

“I wanted you to fight for me,” she said, her scowl stern enough that there was no misunderstanding as to which one of us dominated this conversation. “You said you’d fight for the rest of your life, that you’d always fight for me. For our love.” The bulging vein on her neck suggested anger. “But you didn’t.”

“i believe that in your heart, you have blood not love, and that blood is to the heart what ideas (not love) are to the mind.”

If you haven’t already then go catch up with the rest of his beautifully brutal love tales and grab yourself a copy of Sick Day.

Very well written. Lovely story! Super romantic and I totally fell in love with Cameron. I do have to admit that Hope was not my favorite till later in the story. But she redeemed herself in the end.
I have read from this author before so I knew that I was not going to be disappointed.
The story did confuse me a bit in the beginning because I was wondering why other characters from his previews books were mentioned but then I understood.
The story goes back and forth from past to present and you really have to pay attention or you might get confused.
The characters:
Cameron~ my fave, he was sweet and funny and romantic. He does cheat on Riley with Hope, so keep in mind in case you do not like stories that include cheating. I don't mind, specially when the main characters were soul mates and they really belong with each other.
Hope~ she was not my fave like I said but then I really liked her and I knew she was the one for Cameron. I really liked the Hope from the past. Of course she comes back as the story ends.
Riley~ I really liked her and when you read about how Cameron and her meet you can't help but to fell sorry for her because she was really nice and perfect.
Gordon~ Cameron's best friend, he really was something else and kind of an acquired taste. But he was funny and made the story interesting.
There were a few more characters but those were my fave.
I really loved how the author ended the story and I won't spoil the ending but I will say that it made me cry, a lot.

I will mention one part that totally had me laughing out loud, this is when we are on a very super hot and steamy scene:
She let out a soft moan. "Cameron..." she pleaded.
"I want to lick your face," I said, the words slipping out of my mouth without my knowledge.
Right in the middle of an awesome scene...
So if you like steam in your stories this one has it, just be warned, you might laugh like I did.
I will recommend this book to anyone that likes a good romance.

Was asked to give an honest review.

So honestly I struggled with this to begin with I just couldn't get sucked into it.

But I kept in going through it and my god it was good.

The story bounces from present, to past throughout. It's about Hope and Cameron who are high school sweethearts.

Although they lose contact when they go off to college. Cam marries Riley who he meets in college and Hope is with an older guy called Matt.

However Hope chases Cam to try and find out what happened to them. Why did their relationship not last etc....

Well as soon as they see each other sparks fly as if they have never been separated, their love for one and another sparking and internal fire that would never be put out.

Though don't be fooled this doesn't exactly go the way they hoped and once again one of them is running for the hills.

Throughout the story you are going back and forth through present and past looking into Hope and Cam's relationship on how they got started, why it finished, started again.

It is a proper whirlwind of what is happening. It does take some time getting used to it. I had to put the book down for a couple of minuets to just take a breath but then I was happy to start again.

You are sucked in to the drama that the characters are going through and it's typical this is what actually happens in relationships. It's not always plain sailing and it was refreshing to see being told.

As the story unfolds you get to understand what is happening and your heat starts to build with the will they/ won't they get together FINALLY.

At one point Gordo which is one of Cam's friends smacks Cam in the face and personally I was like YES!!!! I totally wanted to do that.

All I can say to you is give this book a go, I enjoyed it and hope you do too. Was something different to what I usually read and was really welcoming to read more work by the author.

Congrats Morgan on a brill story I look forward to reading more work from you.

"You never forget the name of the woman who shatters your dreams. No need to elaborate or remind me."

"She had a magical way about her, a way that made the rest of the world around us disappear. Whenever we were together, all I saw was Hope and her beauty."

Please step away, while I gather myself up from this tiny puddle that has melted on the floor. Wow...This book was amazing! Unlike anything I have ever read, seriously. Morgan Parker's writing style is so unique. I seriously was melting with every word I read. My heart ached for Hope and Cam. I had butterflies in my stomach and was on the edge of my seat reading their story.

I like to go into my books blind, I judge books by their covers. And boy did I love this cover. Seriously it's beautiful, yet so simple. I'm not a fan of cheating, I'm not a fan of love triangles. If I had known this was is the book I would not have read it. After reading the prologue and seeing it did in fact include cheating, I nearly put it down. But I am so glad I didn't. If you aren't a fan of love triangles and or cheating seriously still give this book a shot. It truly is an amazing love story.

While I know that Cam and Hope were not being fair to their significant others, my heart still heart for Cam and Hope. I didn't care about the lives they had built with someone else. Love is everything right? The heart wants what it wants? I had a gnawing ache throughout most of this book. I felt every emotion with Cam. I do not want to go into further details because, I will not be responsible for ruining this book for you. Just know the epilogue is the best part, it is written beautifully, it will give you closure and bring tears to your eyes. This book is pure poetry.

Sick Day is a unique, beautifully written story of two high school sweethearts who find their way back to one another after a broken promise and many years apart. While I am not a big fan of cheating, in real life or books, Sick Day was different in that in covers the topic from an emotional stand point as opposed to the physical aspect. Morgan Parker tells a tale that will stay in your heart and soul long after you have read the last page.

Cameron and Hope are high school sweethearts. Separated when they decided to go to different colleges, they made a promise to each other. But that promise was broken. One month before Cameron is supposed to marry Riley, he sees Hope outside of his house in the rain watching him. The two reconnect but both are in significant relationships. And so, Cameron uses his very last sick day to try to convince Hope that after all these years, she's still the one who holds his heart.

This book was definitely a roller coaster of emotions. I was mad at myself for actually wanting Cam and Hope to cheat on their significant others if it meant they would end up together. I was frustrated with Hope that she denied what she was feeling and kept pushing Cameron away. Morgan threw some comedy in there which lightened some of the heavy emotional scenes. But mostly i was heartbroken...watching them go through the pain and heartache of not having each other during those lost years.

Reading this book left me believing that there is a such thing as soulmates; a love that will last forever and then some. Love is a beautiful thing and when it is real, nothing or no one can stand in its way. This book pulled at my heart strings from cover to cover. I would definitely recommend this story!
