OOOOH, time traveling hunky magical tortured highlanders…scrumptious! “Dark Victory” is Brenda Joyce’s latest in her ‘Masters of Time’ series about strong uber-Alpha males granted extraordinary capabilities by the gods in order to protect the innocent. Of course, they’re all drop-dead gorgeous and in need of a good shrink…or a strong female to temper their arrogance and provide a haven for their solace. Do I need to add they can go all night and have outsized hungers? I didn’t think so
Tabitha is the second of the Rose sisters; a schoolteacher by day, and a witch. She is also the most gentle and has difficulty with her intermittent powers. When she accompanies her sister to a museum exhibit, she is assailed by a dark sense of evil and the vision of a man who is hurt and suffering. She immediately knows she must help him, no matter how powerful and intimidating he looks, so she performs a spell to try and call him to her. Hours later her life is turned upside down by this dark and intensely sexual stranger who swears to protect her from the evil hunting her. He also intends to be her lover, and when danger threatens, he pulls her back into the distant past with him.
The Black Macleod is favored by the gods with superhuman powers. But his refusal to take his vows to use those powers to protect the Innocent has made his powers fickle at best. What he lives for is revenge on the ones who murdered his whole family. But for how many generations should they pay? And when he must choose between revenge and his feelings for Tabitha, which will prove stronger?
I ignored the rest of my life after picking up this book. Laundry, dinner, XMAS shopping, it all took a backseat to following this intense story of time paradox and love. The hero and heroine are both strong characters, but Tabitha’s strength is more that of her convictions and Macleod’s is centered on the aggressive physical. Both have magic and both learn the price of those powers in ways beyond the physical. There were a few times I felt almost dizzy as the story rotated between time and location, but a quick glance back at the chapter sub-heading always kept me in the right place and time. If it weren’t for the intense sexuality, I would have classified this book as an urban fantasy. However, the main focus was certainly the relationship between the main characters, so paranormal romance is the right genre.
Brenda Joyce’s rendering of the stark contrast between the now and earlier times was masterful. Tabitha’s change in outward demeanor when in the past was an especially nice touch, as women’s rights…weren’t even a consideration then. The pacing, even when jarred by time changes, was exactly as needed for this story and increased the tension of the plot. I enjoyed the author’s other books in this series, but this one is by far my favorite. It’s a bit grittier and the romance a bit darker than the previous books, but the Black Macleod demands nothing less. “Dark Victory” is just as its title declares…a bit dark, but still a victory for love. Now I just have to wait for “Dark Lover”, the last in the Rose trilogy of her ‘Masters of Time’ series. It’s scheduled for release in September 2009.
“Ti amo…
This was my favorite in the series, but I still think Brenda Joyce's time travel paradox gives me a headache. It should be simpler. But at least this time, her strong 21st century heroine stayed strong, and the alpha male came off more a product of his times, rather than just a huge jerk! I like the idea and the concept of this series, in fact I'm going to read the next book, but what I don't like is the strong heroine becomes a wimpy, wussy girl when she goes back in time. With the exception of Allie from book #2, and Tabby from this book, the other 2 girls were too wishy-washy for my taste. I like the series, and I would recommend it, but I think that the first book is the weakest. they do get better, but while I love a good Alpha male hero, I hate a big medieval jerk. So, this series is good enough for me to recommend, but maybe not great.
I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. What a freakin' rush!! I adored this book. Only one little thing bothered me, and that was the two words CRIED OUT. The heroine must have cried out on every other page - lol - but that still didn't stop me from giving this book five stars. I also bought every other Master of Time book *minutes* after finishing this one.
This series gets better with each book. So far I think Guy is my favorite. Although this book did time travel a lot more than the others and it took a bit of concentration at the end to remember which incantation of themselves they were. Picking up the next book now!
This is the first book of this author's I have read. And, of course, the first in this series. I can't say I was overly thrilled with it. I enjoyed the time travel aspect. It was definitely different from most time travel highlander books I have ever read. It was twisting and convoluted with flash forwards and flash backwards and almost difficult to keep up with and wonder what the point was when it seemed that actually every thing that they went through in the story was just going to happen again. What was the point in vanquishing evil if technically it didn't even happen and would happen again in the future. And here's where it gets even more convoluted - her PRESENT self defeats the evil but yet is expecting to do it again with her FUTURE self even though it had already been done. AND two of the same cannot be in the presence of another (obviously, this is time travel 101) so tell me how her present self can defeat her but her future self expect to defeat her again? Did it happen or not? See, it is almost confusing. Whatever, I just enjoyed it for the entertainment value and am not going any further to try to dissect the story. So what I hated about it... Tabitha or Tabby. She was annoying and I didn't like her. Through the ENTIRE story we are told that she is kind and gentle. Well, she must have gone through a personality transplant the moment Guy Mcleod entered her life because what she was, was VIOLENT - she hit him on two separate occasions. Gentle soul, right? ANGRY - screamed at him in outrage many many times through the book, CONDESCENDING - always thinking of him as a "macho man" ( I really, truly, got sick of hearing her think of him as a macho man*rolls eyes* always thinking about how she couldn't stand his bloodthirsty, barbaric ways and could never see herself with someone like him. Stated she wanted a metro sexual man. Also, she refused to accept the ways of the 13th century. This is a woman who very much is aware of time travel (not to mention the cause and effect of tampering with the past) and the differences of time and culture but refused to accept his or his behavior that is right on with the time he was from. It was stated - again multiple times - that she was a prude and didn't enjoy sex but from the very first encounter SHE was the aggressor and would claw him to pieces, climbing him like a tree (I won't mention how mediocre the sex scenes were, just trust me -mostly over and done with with very little detail other than her going insane with lust. Okay, I guess I did mention it.) She wanted to change every single thing about Mcleod but didn't want to stay with him. Hated his violent ways, didn't try to understand him, didn't accept that he was a 13th century man that had already been alive for over 100 years. Yep, totally hated her.
Basically when you dislike that personality of a main character so much it is extremely difficult to like the whole story. I gave it 3 stars because I like time travel and highlanders and the story was interesting though I was wanting it to hurry up and finish just so I could see how it ended.
Guy McLeod lost his entire family due to a feud with the MacDougalls and ever since his quest in life has been revenge on that family. He even refuses to take his vows to become a Master of Time. Blind to anything but erasing the MacDougalls from the face of the earth he goes through life a ruthless executioner who knows no mercy. But as with everything in life, every action has consequences and in Guy's case the consequences lie in his future, in the form of witch Tabitha Rose. Tabitha is a schoolteacher during the day and at night she fights evil to save the innocents, as her family had been doing for generations. When during a visit to an exhibit at the museum, she has a vision of a bloodied Highlander desperate for her help, she unconsciously summons him to her time and that's the start of a journey toward love and redemption throughout time and space.
Tabitha is the quiet, gracious and classic one of the Rose women. She is polite and kind but beneath her proper exterior lays a woman who is powerful, strong and brave. She's been burned in love by her arrogant and macho ex-husband and decided that only non-alpha men will do for her. But she didn't count on the ultimate Alpha male Highlander from the past to sweep her of her feet.
Guy is hot-tempered, stubborn, merciless and even barbaric at times. He has a vast amount of self-confidence that can easily be confused with arrogance. His only need for women in his life is a physical one. However, he didn't count on a prim and proper woman from the future to turn his world upside down. Guy is very set in his ways and his obsession with revenge but Tabby and his feelings for her do mellow him a bit.
Both Guy and Tabby were not only great characters individually but also together they brought the intensity and sensuality I missed with Brie and Aidan in the previous book. Guy is every bit the medieval, barbarian Highlander and Tabby epitomizes the elegant, compassionate witch. Guy triggers her inner sensuality and strength and makes her want to be less inhibited.
There are a lot of characters in this book. Next to the main couple, secondary characters as Nick Forrester, Samantha Rose and Kit play very important roles in the plot. I know that Sam is the heroine of the next book in this series (DARK LOVER) and Nick and Kit are definitely main character material too. For now though I'm really looking forward to Sam Rose and Ian MacLean's story which is coming next. I had a taste of their chemistry in this book and I want more!! And then there's Nick. The tidbits on him continued from the previous book and they are enticing and mysterious enough to make me want to know more of him, even if in this book he already had quite a big part.
With this second book in the Rose Trilogy within the Masters of Time series of which it's the fourth one, Brenda Joyce gave me a novel filled with grief, love, loyalty and thirst for vengeance. I'll start by saying that I loved this book but I have to list the lesser things first so I can end it on the high I also finished the book on. The one thing that keeps puzzling me throughout this series, even after 4 books now, is the time leaping and I keep having difficulties with the chronology. Especially without an explanation of the rules I guess this is something that will run through all the books in this series. It is something that confuses me but at the same time Brenda Joyce keeps met enticed with the time-travel and the chronology in these books because in the end she always manages to tie everything together in a great and clear way, solving all the confusing and puzzlement created before. Because of the time-leaping these are books that you should read with a clear and attentive mind, otherwise you get lost in the back and forth between past, present and future. Next to the time-leaping thing there are a few small inconsistencies, but they were so minor it didn't influence my reading pleasure.
The above being said, I must say that for me this was the best installment of this series to date. Not only did I truly like the main couple, the chemistry between them and their contradicting personalities, the various little subplots and secondary characters also pleasantly surprised me. I'm still impressed by how this book captured me and kept me guessing as to where Brenda Joyce was taking me with the utterly unpredictable plot. The end was put together excellently. It gave answers to all the questions raised and brought closure to the few loose ends that were present earlier in the plot.
In this book I learned more about the Rose women and their destinies. Every generation has a Healer, a Witch and a Slayer and each of them have their destinies set long before they are even born in this world. What's more, the world of the Masters of Time is expanded with additional knowledge about the CDA (Centre for Demonic Activities) and the HCU (Historical Crimes Unit), the ones battling evil in the present day. Consequently, the book is set substantially more in the present day compared to the previous ones.
Every once in a while I read books that send my speculative senses to a high. This was one of those books. I was speculating about future stories, prompted by tantalizing information on and dialogues between secondary characters as Nick, Jan, Kit, Sam, Ian and the mysterious Lady of An Roinn Mor. I was even speculating about the outcome of this very book and the plot. This part of the series managed to evoke that enthusiastic feeling I had when I read the very first book of it. After two slightly disappointing books Brenda Joyce pulled me right back into the world of the Masters of Time and the Rose Women with this one.
This is a beautiful series. It is a war on witches - good vs evil but also a young master with a lost soul. Guy Macleod lost everything at the age of 14, his revenge held no bounds. Across time, Tabby or Tabitha as she is known has been mentally wanting to help the young Macleod. Not spoiling any further. Each Rose Woman has her destiny to tell and if you enjoy Paranormal you will enjoy this series. A timeless take of Masters (who have trials and tribulations of their own) who’s destiny revolves with a Rose.
Confusing. It's a rule that history can't be rewritten and yet, it can. It keeps happening. So, it's a rule or not? Not a fan of the insta-love. Not a fan that she couldn't control herself even when he was being a jerk. All the back and forth gave me an headache :(
Such a good book! Was just as good as the other books in this series! The fact that each male character has his own issues and, of course, doesn't want to listen to women, tells me that Brenda Joyce has put a lot of thought into the male characters as well as the female characters.
Dark Victory is the fourth book in Brenda Joyce's Masters of Time series. Tabby Rose is a white witch living in modern day New York City. She comes from a long line of magical women. It is their destiny to fight evil. Tabby has always been connected to a sad grieving boy. It turns out this boy is now a man and not just any man, but a medieval highland warrior. As she is viewing an exhibit in a Manhattan museum she has a vision of him and he his burnt and bleeding. Wanting so badly to help this man that she is drawn to, she casts a spell to send him through time to her. Tabby has never been as powerful a witch as her grandmother, but her spell works and Black Macleod is sent across centuries to New York.
So far this series has been hit or miss for me. The first one I liked okay, the second one I really enjoyed and then the third one fell flat. If Dark Victory follows the pattern, then it should be another book that I liked. Well, guess what? I did! Tabby and Macleod have a lot of issues to work through in this book, but I enjoyed their struggles over evil and(the best part)their smouldering sexual tension. There is lots of angst in this book, so look out!
Both Tabby and Macleod are very stubborn people, who strongly believe in their convictions. Unfortunately, for Tabby and Macleod they both have different views on how to handle their problems. The only thing that they do seem to agree on is their sexual attraction to one another. At one point after Tabby and Macleod refuse to budge in their beliefs, Macleod says to Tabby, "If ye insist on war, we'll war in the day. But not in the night." He puts the kibosh on any more of her protests and they form a sort of truce. Le Sigh. I just love a man who knows what he wants and goes after it.
I will admit that Black Macleod was a little more black than I generally like my heroes to be. He walked a fine line at certain times between being a "bad boy" and just down right cruel. He fully redeems himself in the end, though and that made it all the better. The time travel aspect of the story is very convoluted and definitely got confusing. I am certain I still don't have a full grasp on how it works. I just go with the flow and try not to think to hard about it or pick it apart. If this is one of your pet peeves, then you might have a problem with this aspect of the book.
Just finished my favorite story of the books so far, not my favorite book over all but my absolute favorite story of all the main characters that I have read in the series! I was crying so hard at the end that it was hard to finish the book so could get past the trauma and read on to see what finally happened with Guy MacLeod and Tabitha Rose... Brenda Joyce has taken this book far beyond the fantastical of the first three and crafted one of the most compelling and stubborn characters thus far! Guy MacLeod made Malcolm, Royce and even Aidan seem like babes in the woods in comparison.. Stubborn, macho, forbidding and the one most in need of healing his soul of all the Masters he is paired with Tabitha Rose.. The gentlest of women Tabby soon comes to learn that while her newfound Medieval lover is a genuine genius in bed, taking her to heights of ecstasy she has never found in her 29 years, he is also one of the hardest men she has ever met in all those years as well! We are all forged by the fires of life, some of us have gentler easier times than others... Guy MacLeod was forged by painful loss, a tremendous guilt and immeasurable sorrow! Somehow over 90 odd years he has managed a soul connection with Tabby, something which troubles him greatly as he considers it a weakness and he is a man who does not yield control of his own destiny to anyone! This book was the greatest emotional roller coaster for me as all the trials and conflicts that both Guy and Tabby must go through before finally finding a way for each of them to heal the other with love and true understanding! Fate cannot be denied no matter how hard we fight it! My favorite story, my favorite couple and so far the book that was the easiest to keep track of where and when the plot line takes place! I am now starting the next book which is sadly also the last of the series, Dark Lover the long awaited story of Ian MacLean, son of Aidan-The Wolf of Awe who was the leading character in Dark Embrace , and Sam Rose who is Tabby's sister...
From everything the author has said the last story in the series promises to not only be the most intense but also the hardest to read as Ian has the most tormented past of all the Master's thus relives the worst nightmares!
Guy "Black" Macleod has heard a woman's voice haunt him since he was a boy and his family killed in a fire, by his enemies. Now he has yet to take the Masters Oath because he pursues revenge for what was done to his family and clan. Then he is summoned to the one woman whose voice has haunted him most of his life. Tabitha Rose, is a schoolteacher and a Rose and is able to have visions to help others that need protecting. Tabitha has had bad luck with men, having been married and divorced (which was a disaster with a husband that had a affair most of their time together) When Tabitha see's Guy in a vision, she feels a needs to help him and she summons him thinking him hurt, but in the end he ends up saving her life and taking her back to his time because there is a great evil stalking the both of them. What Tabitha didn't expect to find in this powerful Highlander, was that he is her Destiny and that their love would save each other....Dark Victory is the fourth installment in the Masters of Time series. I have now read all of the books in this series, and I have just loved the aspects of these stories. Brenda Joyce has written a passionate and a unforgettable series with strong characters that are entertaining. I fell in love with both characters but especially Tabitha, who even though she has fallen in love before, has also been hurt and has a hard time with trust and finding a gentle man, and we see how much she starts to change to her real self who is passionate and strong but is still gentle and elegant when she needs to be as well. Brenda Joyce takes the reader on a thrilling and mind blowing adventure filled with intrigue, magic, and romance!!! I just loved Dark Victory and one of my favorites of this author!!! A FANTASTIC READ!!!
My Favorite Quote Tabby clenched her fists "You can stay, but only for one night, and you sleep there, on the sofa" She pointed, her hand trembling " And you will sleep there alone," He murmured "Then stop thinkin' about me without my clothes,"
Dark Victory is another addition to the fantastic MASTERS OF TIME series by Brenda Joyce. This story’s focus is on Tabitha Rose and the Black MacLeod. Tabitha is a Rose woman, school teacher by day and magic wielding witch by night. Tabitha has been having visions, seeing a Highlander from the past. She is drawn to find out the history of these images and people she sees. She decides to continue her research by visiting a medieval Irish exhibit being held at the MET in New York. With sister Sam and sister’s co-worker Kit in tow, they are up for the adventure. But as they near the exhibit, a strange foreboding is present and the halls of the Met are oddly empty for a weekend? Dawn the glassed in case, Tabby finds herself locked in fascination with a single item. Hanging from a gold chain lays a talisman, an open palm with a pale stone at its center. Tabby can feel the magic coming from its core. Suddenly tabby finds herself overcome with grief and emotion, raising her eyes she finds herself staring at a Highlander, he is bloodied and burned, then suddenly he is gone. Wincing in pain, she murmurs “Come to me Highlander”. The Black Macleod, that was what he was called in Blayde, Scotland in 1298, and that is what he had become since the slaying of his entire family .....
The Rose Trilogy part of The Masters of Time has been a fantastic addition to the series so far. It's great to have characters flow from one book to the other in such a cohesive way. Tabby has been my favorite so far - and her story with Guy is almost beyond romantic. They connect on such a deep level in a way that no one really thought was possible.
Guy is fighting the demons of his childhood - a murdered family that he feels that he is honor bound to avenge over the ages. Back in Manhattan, Tabby is being attacked by an evil that has hunted her through the ages. They have to find a way to help each other before they are both lost forever.
As part of their struggle we get to see a little more into the background of the ancient brotherhood that all the Masters are a part of and how they work internally - it was quite a nice addition to an already great book. My one and only small complaint was that a couple of the rules seemed to have been bent for the two main characters to help them along the way - but I'm sure it was just the gods throwing them a life line here and there.
The romance in this book was definitely hot and steamy, but the leads pissed me off throughout most of the book. First of all, the guy was a major jerk. Because he had suffered in his past at the hands of another clan, he's had a 100-year war going on against them and has never forgiven, and he even captured a little kid from the other clan and had him imprisoned and starved (Even if the kid would later become evil, but still, that's just horrible). And the female lead, when she finds out about this, she tries to free the kid and end the affair with the guy, and for that he treats her like a whore, saying "it's not over until I say it's over" and "a mistress has no right to tell me what to do". What. A. Jack-ass. And then guess what happens? He tempts her with sex and she caves. She's like "I'll have sex with you but I still don't approve of your treatment of the kid." Seriously? You want to prove you're a ho? Why don't you just hand over you brains while you're at it? Totally. Frustrating! It's not until about the last 50 pages or so that he reforms. Arrrgh!!!
