Katrina Landon’s life is about to change. The wealthy father she has never known wants to meet her, but she has to travel from the slums of Boston through the Amazon rainforest to his plantation. As if that’s not bad enough, her guide is the handsome, self-assured, too confident for his own good, Mr. Knightly, who immediately stirs her temper.
Felix Knightly isn’t looking forward to escorting a spoiled rich girl through the jungle no matter how much her father pays. Yet when he meets her, he finds Katrina’s distracting innocence and charming demeanor unsettling. She makes it nearly impossible to concentrate on his job—a problem he’s never had around women. He’d rather fight off the fire ants, howler monkeys, and crocodiles than risk losing his heart to her, since he’s never met an honest wealthy woman.
As they delve deeper into the shadows of the rainforest, they discover they weren’t just wrong about each other, they were wrong about the dangers of the jungle. Someone wants them dead and they have to find out who and why before it’s too late.
This is the way. Sensual, yet clean and with the times yet traditional. I was a little nervous with the cover but I should have known Marie would be good and clean. I would not let a teenager read it. Yes it's clean however the descriptions of feeling would not help already raging teenagers. My personal opinion. Good story line too. Excited for the second in the series.
This book was a quick, simple, fun read. Set in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil in the late 1800s, the story was full of adventure, romance and mystery. All of Miss Higgins' novels which I've read so far have had unexpected twists in their plots, making them less predictable and therefore more enjoyable.
Abandoned by her father at birth, Miss Katrina Landon was raised by her poor mother. They both worked hard in a tavern within the slums of Boston to make ends meet. At 20 years of age, Katrina received a letter from her dying father. He wanted his daughter to meet up with him at his rubber plantation in the Amazon rainforest. There, she would receive her rightful inheritance. Katrina resented her father. Afterall, he was the man who abandoned his wife and never wanted his child. She only agreed to meet him because she needed the money to pay for her ailing mother's medical expenses.
Once in Brazil, Katrina met Felix Knightly, the handsome adventurer who would safely guide her through the rainforest and deliver her to her father. There was an instant attraction between Katrina and Felix. Felix was an English gentleman who'd been living out his dreams in the rainforest for 10 years. He loathed uptight, spoilt rich women since he was hurt by such a "lady" during his youth. Thinking that Katrina was the type of wealthy, arrogant woman he detested, he did not like her at first. Katrina certainly presented herself well. She dressed like a proper, elegant, fashionable "lady". She tried to act the part of a wealthy lady of good breeding, mainly due to her mother's insistence. However, she was too tough, too down to earth, too hardworking and far too caring an individual, to keep up the pretence. There were some fun moments between Katrina and Felix. Whilst the author kept their romantic encounters quite clean, the scenes I believe were more suited for adults than young teens.
As they trekked through the Amazon jungle, an unexpected series of events took place which brought the whole party into danger. The ending was different to what I expected. The mystery was only partly resolved and will be continued in book two, "Amazon Moonlight", which I look forward to reading once it is published.
First let me say that Marie Higgins is one of my favorite Historical authors. I didn't think this was her best book, but the character's were interesting, the plot was good --- it just missed something. I don't know what. It may have just been me.
I couldn't get over the fact that he slept with a prostitute after meeting the main character. This was a real turn off for me. I like my heroes to be faithful. It was still a clean read. I usually love Marie Higgins books and have read many.
Kartina needs to meet her father but he lives on a plantation in the Amazon. Felix is hired to bring her. From dislike to a sense of friendship to love. And so much adventure in between. I couldn’t put it down, a real page turner!
This was just an amazing book to read. Read it in one day. I was shocked about the twist and turns that were in the book. With all that was happening and the characters, it just was one book that you don't want to put down. I was shocked at the twist with the mother, it was very well played. The step brother was another one that you don't see coming. Katrina and Felix are very diverse characters and see what they want to see. This shows that you need to open your eyes, listen and don't make judgments on people. Such a wonderful adventure waits on these pages. This is a must read for anyone that is looking for a thrilling, out of the box thinking, can't put down book. You won't believe how wrong you are about something and then to find out you yourself did that misjudgment.
******* Spoiler Alert***** I was a little sad that Felix didn't accept the Earldom and they have a happy life in England but I do believe this was one of the best twists in the story.
