Pseudonym of Charlotte M. Brame.

Charlotte Mary Brame (usually known as Charlotte M. Brame, last name sometimes mistakenly given as Braeme; appeared under pseudonyms in America, notably Bertha M. Clay, and was sometimes identified by the name of her most famous novel, Dora Thorne) (November 1, 1836 - November 25, 1884) was an English novelist.

She was born in Hinckley, Leicestershire, to Benjamin and Charlotte Agnes Law, devout Roman Catholics. After attending convent schools in Bristol and Preston and a finishing school in Paris, she worked as a governess before marrying Phillip Edward Brame (1839–1886), a London-based jeweler, on January 7, 1863. The couple had nine children, of which four lived to adulthood. Since Brame was a poor businessman and a drunkard, Charlotte found herself forced to support the family with her writing. Her books were very successful with the public, but her earnings were severely diminished by piracy, particularly in the United States. The family lived in London, Manchester, and Brighton before returning to Hinckley, where she died in 1884. She owed money at her death, and her children were taken into guardianship; her husband committed suicide in May 1886.

One of the best romance books ever written. Two hundred years ago, 'Beyond Pardon' by Bertha M. Clay, is still in the first rank of best romance books.

Efficiency in a man's office is a reference to his intelligence.

I enjoyed this book. Touches on love, betrayal and redemption. I was a teen when I read and remembering the end still leaves a lump in my throat. I wonder why this fabulous book has never been turned into a movie.

The lady was led on unintentionally but come to realise it rather too late.

The act in itself seems to be beyond pardon.

I love historical fictions and I read this book after my dad died last year and I was looking through his library. The book is filled with suspense, romance and lots of mystery all well thought out but there were lots of scenarios I didn't understand. Like why would Sir Lionel never able to speak the truth about his marriage all through when he was wooing Lady Lynn, when there were a lot of chances to. Why he would lead an innocent lady's life on without coming clear, especially on the tangent they were going to take. I was so sad to have such an ending. Life could be sometimes unfair. I am glad I picked this book. It was so refreshing to!

One of my thrilling teenage reads! It was a popular pass-around in my all-girls Catholic boarding school in the 70s. Even then, the story sounded kind of "old." All told, it was an engaging story of one girl's unbridled jealousy and another's inner beauty that won in the end.
