I downloaded this book to my Kindle library when it was free for a 24-hour period. Yes, it gives information about preserving physical and digital photos. I like that it gives me a priority about where to start: 1. Identify people in old pictures while relatives still know who they are 2. Remove photos from magnetic albums. 3. Digitize color photos before they fade and discolor more than they already are. 4. Digitally restore copies of those color photos.
I recommend this short book to all readers interested in this topic.
Preserve Your Family Pictures: How To Save Photo Heirlooms for Future Generations by Amber Richar The way we go about saving our photos from the 1900's was to scan them in and put them on a hard drive at which point each of the kids, living in different US locations, got a copy along with their own hard drive. It's my job to update our daily/weekly photos and place them on the hd and notify the kids to send theres along once a year so we all have updated photos. Like the subjects this book covers, preserving what you have. I'm not too concerned with that as I store them on hd's and can print them at anytime I want. Discusses methods for photo preservation. Lots of different discussions in how to store them and why one method is better than another. The thing that took the longest time for me to do was organizing them by year. Has sections on digital also on how to fix photos even and suggests a local photoshop class. Discusses slides and other forms of photos. Other works by the author are highlighted at the end
Very good quick overview of the topic. I'm now looking for something longer with more advanced instructions, but this book is a good (short) starting point.
Some good tips about rescuing water damaged photos, that I wish I had known when I experienced such damage! Also good advice on handling those old magnetic albums from the 60’s.
This book is full of the exact details on how to deal with an old photograph collection. You can tell that the author has seen it all!
It was interesting for me to look at as a millennial who doesn't really have any old photos yet. It made me reminiscent of looking at photos with my mom of her childhood and my ancestors. I don't think this book is written for my generation, but maybe it will come in handy we all inherit all the old photo collections.
I think we can work extremely hard to keep physical photos in as good a shape as possible, but some day it will nearly all be digital. Of course people will always be nostalgic for physical film, so it might come back with a vengeance. Who knows?
This is a must read for every family that values their family pictures! It's a project that sometimes seems daunting and easy to put off, but should not be. The longer a person waits to tackle it, the more potential loss of the photos might happen.
This book goes into both the preservation of physical photo prints, and digital photos.
Great book and written in everyday language so that anyone can follow. I was very impressed with all of the suggestions. This is a task that I'm going to do and this is the best book I've found on the subject. Good luck!
This is a simple easy book to read about preserving your family photographs . Most of the information is common sense . However it does give you a desire to maintain a family history through properly storing your photographs.
It is well worth reading. The next reading will be piecemeal. Just rereading the sorting out of photos and doing the sorting is a major project . But the book lays out a plan.
A great book that gives you realistic and helpful ways to preserve family treasures on paper and digital. A must for every photographer or scrap book enthusiast.
