This was literally me trying to rate this book:
Pacing

Frustrated

There were many parts of the book that I did like and as many I did not.
Happy and Sad

So, I am breaking this review down to try to make sense of my jumbled thoughts on this book because there were certainly many.

The Characters
Kasen is a 19-year-old socially awkward young man who doesn't have any friends and has never been in a relationship, meaning that he is a virgin in all senses of the word. (Is it kind of creepy that I am so excited by a virgin character? Eh, probably, but each to his or her own, so don't judge me!) He is afraid of opening himself up to anyone because he really doesn't know how. As it said in the book's blurb, his mother was completely domineering and verbally abusive throughout Kasen's entire childhood, which has shattered his confidence and ability to relate to anyone.
He didn't feel comfortable on letting anyone in; and that was probably his biggest downfall.
When he meets Rowan, our second MC, Kasen is truly experiencing many things for the first time, and for the first time in his life, he feels alive. It also means that he doesn't know how to handle the many new feelings he is experiencing and to navigate his way in this relationship with anything resembling ease. He doesn't know how to read and interpret all the signals, and he was, understandably, cautious moving forward with Rowan.
He's a friend. He told himself. That's all he is. He's new and doesn't have anyone to hang out with. So just relax and be cool.
Even though Kasen was new to the whole dating scene and was moving forward using extreme caution, I didn't feel like he was just a passive participant in the relationship who only followed the much more experienced Rowan's lead.
...when Kasen began kissing him back, Rowan noticed how experimental that Kasen was. The other was hesitant but eager.
Rowan is a 26-year-old veterinarian who opens a clinic in Chartreuse, a tiny town in Alabama where Kasen lives. He left his old life behind in Boston when he walked in on his boyfriend doing the dirty with a waitress and found his escape in so-small-it-is-barely-on-the-map Chartreuse. (I have to add my two cents in and say that it seems a wee bit dramatic to run away to a different state after dumping your cheating boyfriend, but I just rolled with it...). Rowan just wanted to move to Chartreuse to live a quiet life and do what he loves the most--working with animals. However, fate through a wrench in his plans, and he found a love interest in a small town in Alabama of all places.
In the short two months that Rowan had been in Chartreuse, he found himself losing his heart to a younger man with beautiful blue eyes and a contagious laugh. He had no control over the situation, and it terrified him.
The Romance
This was a slow-burn romance, and I'm so glad it was done this way.
CandleBurning

The development of the relationship would not have worked any other way between the characters because we have one MC who is a shy virgin and another who has been recently and just got out of a relationship that ended very badly. Going full throttle would not have made any sense for these two characters.

They were a truly adorable couple. It was amazing to see how Rowan helped pull Kasen out of his shell and for Kasen to start making Rowan believe that it is okay to trust again.

Rowan was perfectly patient with Kasen and never tried to push him or rush him into anything in their relationship.
Kasen really was innocent. Rowan understood now. Even with just such a simple touch, it seemed to send the boy into shambles...
He was aware of the fact that Kasen had been sheltered throughout his life due to his overbearing mother.

Slow-burn was definitely the best way to go for these guys, and I really enjoyed their slow and steady pace. And their first kiss was just absolutely perfect.
Swoon

The Story
Surprisingly, at least for me, the romance and the developing relationship between Kasen and Rowan was not the whole plot; there was so much more to this book. So, this book took place in a small town in Alabama. You see where I am going with this? Yup, gay bashing and hate crimes. Notice the status below when my adorable little book turned so damned angsty?
TurnedAngsty

Yes, sirree, this is when it happened. People find out about Rowan and Kasen's relationship and some narrow-minded bigots didn't like that.
Cavemen

The spoiler is a summary of the what the bigoted idiots did to Kasen and Rowan:

Even though what the homophobes put Kasen and Rowan through was truly horrible, it was awesome to witness how they stuck by each other and grew closer as a couple and refused to let others get in their way. Like I said, my fluffy, light-hearted book definitely had some teeth.

Warnings/Trigger Alerts
Besides the hate crimes, there were some other dark subject matters involved in the book.

Kasen goes to a club, and while he is not looking, some douche in a suit slips a roofie (a date rape drug) in his drink. The portrayal of this whole scene is not overly explicit and horrifying, and the bastard who slipped Kasen the drug doesn't get to do much before Rowan shows up and beats his ass six ways from Sunday. However, it is attempted date rape.

There was also an instance of domestic violence involving one of the secondary characters. Jess, a friend of Kasen's, stands up for Kasen and Rowan to her husband, a real piece of work, and he hits her as a result. The domestic violence does not happen on page, but we do see the character right after it happens, and she is, of course, very distraught and scared out of her mind.

I just thought I should warn people about these instances in case they could be triggers or some people just really don't like reading about them. They are just small parts of the book, but they do happen, and I gave warnings just to be on the safe side.

Niggles/Flaws/Annoyances
As I said, there were parts of the book I did not enjoy or that annoyed the ever-loving crap out of me.

✘ When Rowan walks in on his boyfriend engaging in the mattress mambo with a waitress, he is of course upset, and I felt for him. But I did not feel so bad for him that I did not get mad when he alluded to her as a homewrecker and blamed her for ruining his relationship. Yes, he also held his ex accountable but he seemed to blame the woman more, who did not even know that Rowan's boyfriend was seeing anyone else, let alone a guy. I guess this could be my feminist side coming through, but why did the woman have to take most of the blame right away? Grrr....
ChapsMyAss
If she knew that the guy she was fornicatin' with was seeing someone else, then, yes, justified anger is justified...

✘ There were a lot extraneous stuff and descriptions thrown in that we really don't need to know or care about.
Rowan smiled, resting his hand down beside of his thigh as he drove. He'd always been better at driving with one hand. He wasn't sure why. It wasn't as if it were safe to do so, but he somehow managed to control the vehicle better.
Do I really need to know that you prefer to drive with just one hand?
No...no, I really do not...
description

✘ There was a distinct lack of descriptors concerning the characters' appearances. Rowan called Kasen "beautiful" a few times, but...is he really? I don't fucking KNOW because I didn't get any more descriptions than eye/hair color. *taking deep breaths*

✘ The first time the MCs make love is a fade to fuckin' black, or as I like to call it,
Cockblock
I waited for over 50% of the book for ze smex, and I get a fade to fuckin' black???
FlippingTable
There was also just one other sex scene in the book, but, at least, it was on-page. Thank heavens for small mercies, yeah?

✘ After all that has happened, I felt that it all wrapped up a little too nicely. The citizens of Chartreuse were pretty much portrayed and described as being mostly homophobic and then they stand up for Kasen and Rowan against the big bad homophobes who had terrorized them and accept them as their own??? It's a nice thought but seems a little too unrealistic with everything else that went down in the book.

✘ This book just had, hands down, some weird-ass grammar. Semi-colons, for example, were often used in place of commas.
Snow wasn't a big deal for him; ever.
I guess semi-colons were used in place of commas a few times because commas were overused everywhere else.
"Fine. Whatever," Kasen slammed the receiver down...
"Not yet, at least," His eyes dimmed...
What did periods ever do to you? It is a-okay to use them more when they are needed! There was also a lot of unnecessary capitalization:
"It's fine, Rowan," He finally said.
These weird grammar rules that the author seems to have made up occur throughout the entire damn book. At least they were consistent.
Sarcasm

Final Thoughts
I really liked both of the MCs and the development of their relationship. It was amazing and so swoon-worthy, a slow-burn well done. I definitely also liked how I got so much more than I was expecting in terms of the story. I was not anticipating the author adding the hate crimes and giving this book a real message and a plot that is very significant to today's society. However, many of the flaws and niggles that I found in the book forced me to lower my rating. I just could not get over them. And, the writing overall, not just the grammar mind you, felt stilted and awkward. It was not horrible, but it was not great either.

You know how you read a book and when you put it down for whatever reason, you can't just wait for the time when you are able to pick it up again? Weeeeeelllll, this never happened for me with this book. I was never excited to back to reading, and I had no urge to pick it up again. It was after forcing myself to start reading it again that I became interested in the story once more. This cycle kept repeating until I finished the book. As I said before, I liked the story but the writing just made it hard to completely immerse myself in the novel; it always held me back from fully enjoying it.

I really can't decide if I should recommend this one or encourage you to stay the eff away. As I said at the beginning of this monstrous review, there were some parts I enjoyed and some I did not...at all. It really is a toss up.
Shrugs

I guess if you choose to read this one, proceed with caution...

DNF @ 36%

I just can't with this book. The writing is driving me nuts with the endless mentions of lips being licked, chewed, bitten, wetted, etc. (144 times in the book according to my kindle), numerous references to the color of their eyes, and frequent headhopping. I finally threw my kindle down when the two adult MCs decided to get out of the car and play an impromptu game of tag in the pouring rain for absolutely no damn reason. This was my facial expression while reading that scene:

I then decided to check out other reviews to see if I'm the only one hating this and saw that the first sex scene is fade-to-black. Oh hell no. I'm done.

when I finished this book, my original thought was 4.5 stars. I'm upgrading it to 5 stars, after sleeping on it and I'll explain why shortly.

Kasen has lived in Chartreuse all his 19 years. He hasn't even left the small town, and only recently moved out of his overbearing mothers house. he has a job he loves, his own home, and his dog, Houston. but something is missing. Rowan moved to Chartreuse to escape his past. 3 years ago he found his long term boyfriend in THEIR bed with someone else, a woman. since then, he has concentrated on her veterinary career and now has his own clinic in Chartreuse.

after meeting while walking their dogs, both men become infatuated with the other, and while Kasen is painfully shy, he finds he can talk to Rowan. when Rowan offers to take food to the local dj, imagine his surprise when Kasen answers the door!

after that. the relationship grows, until something happens that makes Rowan realise just how much young Kasen has come to hold his heart. when Kasen and Rowan are threatened, a surprising source backs not only these two men up, but also a victim of domestic violence.

this book, this love story, is beautifully written, from both Kasen and Rowan's point of view, so we get to hear from them both. it has first love angst from Kasen. it has jumping back into the game angst from Rowan. it has biggotted small minded idiots who think they know best. it has some danger and some passion. and this is where I changed my mind about the star rating.

I do, generally, prefer M/M romances to be a little more explicit. this is not. however, on thinkin on it. this book is not about the sex between these two men, it's about the LOVE and what these two will go through for each other. there is passion, yes, and the first kisses between these two were beautifully written, and the shower scene?? left it all to your imagination!

all in all, a beautiful love story, fought for in the face of small town opinions that need dragging into the 21st Century.

Thank you, Ms Ridener for my copy. you should be very proud x

5 stars for me, if I could give it more I would!!

Rowan moves to small town to start over after heartbreak. He opens his veterinary clinic in what appears to be a friendly small town.

Kasen has always been the quiet guy, sheltered by his mother for so long, at 19 he's just beginning his life.
He has no real friends, works the night shift at a radio station where the repeat callers become his friends.

Rowan meets Kasen and likes him, he wants to be his friend but Kasen is so unsure of himself.
Rowan knows he has to take it slow with Kasen, he's like a skittish puppy, he needs friends, he needs love, he needs to be himself, but Rowan knows he can't push without scaring Kasen away.

Kasen has finally found a friend. Someone who doesn't judge him, who helps him see the world outside his door and hiding behind a microphone at the radio station. Kasen is attracted to Rowan, but he has no clue how to handle it.

Rowan shows Kasen there's much more to life than he's ever known, shows him the world around him, not just his mother and his tiny town. Kasen is happy, he's found a friends and a lover.

But how does smalltown USA deal with their first homosexual couple?

This is a beautiful story of one mans coming of age basically, learning all he's known is not all there is. Learning to trust, to love and to stand up for himself. While Rowan learns to overcome his past and take a chance again.

I love these two men, the story is so sweet and could happen in any small town still stuck in the dark ages. Chartreuse is a sweet love story but also deals with stereotypes and a young man dealing with making his sexuality known publicly. There are so many obstacles to overcome, but Kasen gets what he needs to be a stronger, sure of himself, happy man.

I have a new favorite book this year: Chartreuse by T. E. Ridener. It has such an incredible, powerful, and beautiful message! I'd give it 10 stars if I could. Nobody could have written it better. I am awed at how emotional it was and I would recommended it to anyone.

It is a male/male story about a couple who is fighting against hate and striving for equality. There is a little bit of mature content, but it is still absolutely wonderful. I am just speechless. <3

I liked this but the writing was annoying. Too many weird wording issues. An author really should know the differences between sit, set and sat. Gah!

This book was not what I was expecting at all, but in the best way possible!

“People are taught to fear what's different. They think they have to question it instead of just accepting it.”

One of the most moving statements in the book, these words struck a cord in me. Kasen Reed is coming into his own. He has made the decision to move out, he is rocking it as ‘Cool Kasey’, and loves his small town.

Enter in Rowan Kelly. A man from the city of Boston finds himself wanting to start over in the small town of Chartreuse, Alabama. Starting his Vet practice with a heart of gold, Rowan starts to become loved by the town.

A meeting on a cool morning at the dog park in town sets Kasen and Rowan on their journey.

This book was a love story. A love story with many obstacles that no one should have to face, but in the end a love story all the same. When the heart finds what it wants and is sure a person would do anything for that love and that is what the reader gets the chance to see in this book.

Watching Kasen become his own person through the love of Rowan and an unlikely friend, Jess, and the events surrounding him was truly moving. One must make the decision to step away in hopes of preventing things from happening or stand up and fight for whats right. To see this couple struggle through both choices and still come out on top in the end was the best feel good moment.

The true feel to the book was a nice change. Some may say what happens in the book is nowhere near close to real life but the startling fact is that it is. With a brilliant message, author T.E. Ridener both made me aware and warmed my heart while reading Chartreuse. I felt for the couple on all levels and a person can only ask one thing of a great book: that it makes you feel.

Chartreuse does just that and therefore making it a great book in my opinion. Give this unconventional romance a chance and fall in love with love all over again.

Touching story with a message of hope, sweet love story

Kasen is a shy nineteen year old who doesn't struggle with his identity, but with other's acceptance. He know's he is different when it comes to his sexuality.
He also knows the small town he lives in, may not accept who he is.

Rowan moves to Chartreuse to start a new life after a breakup in his relationship.
He is now the town's Vet. While walking his dog one morning, he meets Kasen. A young man who is shy, and not very talkative.
Rowan has been listens to the towns radio station only he doesn't know Cool Kasey, the DJ at the station is Kasen until he calls in to request a song and ends up offering to bring Kasey some dinner over, he finds Kasen at the station, as Kasey.

There, it all begins.
Rowan takes Kasen out of town for an early breakfast. Just a small Waffle House, but a first for Kasen. While have breakfast Rowan learns Kasen has lived a very sheltered life, So Rowan makes his job to make sure Kasen gets to finally live life and see other places.
The day Rowan took him to the zoo it was so sweet to read about how excited he was to be there!
On the way home it started to rain
Rowan pulled over they played tag in the rain it was such fun to read that part such a silly thing playing in the rain but it showed the playful sweet side of Rowan and Kasen
Hidden thoughts and actions slowly begin between the two.
This was a very touching story.
Very well written and put together nicely.

If you're looking for hardcore sex scenes, you might want to chose a different book. This is about tender exploring, finding someone you can be comfortable with, slowly receive feelings for, and experiencing what love feels like. For the first time.
I loved this book and hope to read more about Rowan and Kasen's journey together!

I completely fell in love with this book and the characters. T.E. Ridener did an amazing job with this book and I am happy that yet another author is bringing awareness to a problem that we have. The characters in the book are so relatable. I love Rowan and Kasen. It was difficult to read some of this book just because I have seen people go through similar things that both these men have to go through. T.E. Ridener did an excellent job at bringing attention to the problem without sugar coating it and also without being so graphic that would make it hard to read. I could not help but want to jump into the book and protect both of these men. I loved the journey that I got to go on with them. I would highly recommend this book.

First off, this is a M/M romance. You know what? That doesn't even matter. The story is so much deeper than that. It is a story about love and acceptance. This book melted my heart, like butter. In theory, no mater what your sexual orientation we all face the same issues in love. This is no different for Rowan and Kasen. I just want to give Kasen a hug! He is the sweetest. Don't get me started on Rowan! He is mature and patient and real. These 2 stole my heart right away. Unfortunately, they live in a tiny little town. You can see where this is going. Is their love strong enough to overcome the obstacles they must face? This is a must read!

I bought this book immediately upon learning that the proceeds were being donated to The Trevor Project. That's also the only reason that I am not returning it for a refund. I was very disappointed in this book for many reasons. The biggest reason being that it is in desperate need of either an editor or a proof reader that understands the concept of grammar. Sadly this book is riddled with grammatically incorrect sentences, misspelled words (ie: grown instead of groan) and missing words that continually distracted me from the story. Which was massively frustrating.

WOW! This is not a genre I normally read but I love the author so I wanted to read it and I wasn't disappointed at all. A story of a small southern town and love and how it grows and is taken by others around them. This was a wonderful love story of 2 people and their journey. You feel their joy and sadness and have surprise moments. The story made my heart happy. A must read for anyone who loves a love story. Another hit for an amazing author!

Fabulous book by T.E.Ridener. A story about acceptance, love and small, narrow minds who show prejudicial treatment to the inability to accept what they don't understand or perceive as wrong. Unfortunately this plagues cities and towns across all states and hopefully this book will inspire and enlighten victims to believe they shouldn't have to be faces with hate crimes.

4 Star Review by Jen Skewes

I really loved this book and the characters. I have read many m/m romance books before but I think that this one is a little different in the sense that it is not about the physical attraction or sexual connection between the two characters. It is about the emotional connection that they have but it also touches on a topic that is so real and true to life. Kasen and Rowan’s relationship was one that the small town of Chartreuse frowned upon. This is their story of how they fought hard for their love. We see the struggles that they faced; a mother who was unwilling to accept her son’s sexuality to the hatred that some of the residents felt towards these two. But Kasen and Rowan proved that love is strong enough to survive it all.

Kasen is only 19 years old and just moved out of his home that he shared with is mother. He has a job that he loves, is finally living on his own and somewhat free of his mother. Kasen lived a very sheltered life, which is mainly due to his mother. He never even experienced the little things, a first kiss, holding someone’s hand, or even leaving the small town of Chartreuse. Kasen is also gay which is not something that is acceptable in the small town that he lives in. He doesn’t really have many friends now or even when he was in high school. Mostly staying to himself. When he meets Rowan at the dog park one day there is something about him that has caught Kasen’s attention. Kasen has no idea if Rowan is gay, and if so if he is even interested in Kasen. But regardless of Rowan’s sexuality he finds a friendship with Rowan that is something he never had before.

Rowan has recently moved to Chartreuse, hoping to forget and leave behind his cheating ex boyfriend. Rowan is a 26 year old vetanarian. He spends his days helping animals and his nights at home with his dog, a good meal and the voice of Cool Kasey on the radio. He’s even called into the radio startion a few times to make a request. Little does Rowan know that the voice that he listens to at night is the voice of the same young man who he met at the dog park. When these two finally realize the connection they begin to see more of each other. Rowan takes Kasen on some journeys to see and do things that Kasen has never had the opportunity to experience before. What I loved about the beginning of their relationship is that it wasn’t really rushed. Neither one of them knew if the other was gay. Both trying to convince themselves that they were hanging out doing things that two normal guy friends do together, except they weren’t. Their connection slowly started to build and you could feel that sexual tension up until that very first kiss when they both realize that what they have is a lot more than a friendship. And that very first kiss was filled with so much emotion.

Rowan and Kasen started falling for each other but to the outside world the love that these two shared was not acceptable. And because of their love they had to deal with a lot of hurt, pain, hatred and honestly some horrific incidents. I loved both of these characters. Kasen was only 19 and had this innocence about him. At times he seemed so vulnerable but at the same time he could handle himself. He had never been with anyone before on a sexual level and Rowan was there to give him all of those firsts, that all teenagers cannot wait to experience. Rowan was patient and caring and in a way nurturing when it came to Kasen. He wanted to protect him from the bad. Together, they honestly made a beautiful couple.

Chartreuse is one of those books that will touch your heart. What these two went through and seeing how much they suffered was so real. This story wasn’t about the hot sex between two men or even the physical attraction. It was about real life, about the reality that people face when they love someone of the same sex. It is emotional at times but also happy. Rowan and Kasen fought the fight and never gave up. It would have been so easy to leave the town of Chartreuse and go to a place where their love was more acceptable. But this was their home and they planned on staying and fighting. This book is a very touching and inspiring and and I loved it. A must read.

*Warning: may contain spoilers*

I thought I couldn't be any more amazed by Ridener's writing than what I've already read. This is one of those "mark it on your calendar" rarities when I am wrong.

Kasen Reed lives in the small town of Chartreuse, Alabama. It’s a town where everyone pretty much knows everyone else and their business. His mother suffered a drinking problem and mental issues, and his father was non existent. He is extremely shy, except when he’s at work. He’s “cool Kasey” on the radio and that’s the only place he feels like he can be himself. He feels like the only person he can talk to is his friend Jessica, who is completely aware of his "lifestyle" and perfectly accepting. Now there's a friend!

Rowen Kelly moved to Chartreuse from Boston after his (now ex) boyfriend cheated on him...with a woman...He’s pretty much sworn off relationships, but when he sees Kasen at the dog park and hears his voice on the radio, he can’t help but wonder what if.....

The descriptions of Boston were actually well done. I know Ridener's from a small town so it makes me wonder if she's ever actually been to Boston since the descriptions of even the weather were spot on.

As the two guys slowly get to know each other and wonder what the other is thinking, or if the other is actually even gay, it goes to show you never really do know what someone else is thinking. Someone might feel like you do, think the same things, and have the same fear about moving forward that you do.

Slowly they come together and their friendship blossoms more into a romance. Of course, living in a small town where everyone knows everyone, it isn’t too long before rumors begin to spread. Once that happens, it’s even less time before the anonymous death threats and violence starts. More than once Kasen is attacked physically, verbally and is even almost violated by a man at a gay club. So it’s not only straight men that only attack women. Hatred and violence is rampant in anyone who’s ignorant and disrespectful.

“People are taught to fear what's different. They think they have to question it instead of just accepting it.” This is a profound quote that relates to anyone who hasn’t followed the ‘status quo’ of societal history. Women, homosexuals, etc…

If you’re different than the mainstream, you’re feared. And if you’re feared you’re hated. Fear might be a natural behavior, but hatred is no. That is nurtured. Love is blind and it comes in all forms. This is shown by the way the town comes together and not only supports Kasen and Rowen, but by the way the two men also help Jessica out of her abusive relationship. Considering how her husband is one of Kasen’s attackers and the couple’s offender, it’s no surprise he’s just your average run of the mill douche bag. You see this kind of guy everywhere. He’s the loud mouth jackass that just has to be in charge all the time b/c he can’t stand anything different than the way “it’s always been”. But you come to realize how amazing love can be if you just let it happen. That’s what happens in this story. It’s never “uncomfortable” in any way. Even the intimate moments, which can sometimes be awkward in a book regardless of gender if the scene isn’t well written, don't come across as trying too hard in the least. They seem perfectly natural.

That's probably b/c Ridener has a way of just making the reader FEEL instead of just reading. And what a tearful and emotional ending! I was so happy for Kasen and Rowen and they’re not even real people!

It would be nice if this book were required reading in sociology classes, so some people can get an idea of how acceptance should actually work.

Copy provided by T.E. Ridener in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

This is the third book I've read by T.E. Ridener and it's probably my absolute favourite. I also have to commend the author for writing such an amazing book. I was apprehensive at first when I realized that the story was an m/m romance (male/male) as oppose to the generic heterosexual relationships. I've never read any same sex stories and I wasn't really sure what to expect with the story line or the character relationships Chartreuse showed me that regardless of sex, a story can still be beautiful if it's solely focused on the love of two people.

Chartreuse follows the story of a shy, barely legal boy called Kasen who hides himself and his sexuality. Then there's the older, new resident of Chartreuse, Rowan who is much more comfortable with his sexuality and accepting it. They meet while both dog walking. Let's be honest they're basically two different people that are practically perfect for each other. You have the domineering, more masculine Rowan , and the innocent, wide-eyed Kasen who takes the place of the more feminine role. The two characters do somewhat reflect a stock character feel but their romance is genuine in the story and not forced which is very hard to find in some books.

"No place appreciates the summer like Boston, because Boston knows in its bones what the alternative is" - Living in Canada I can completely understand. But this quote not only pertains to the weather but for me the idea of accepting life and running with it because the alternative of living a closed, sheltered, and worried life is far worse. Possible foreshadow of the story? I think so.

For those apprehensive about the "sex scenes" in new adult and adult romance novels I can tell you that this story isn't as explicit as other stories. All actions are implied and described very loosely. Which I appreciate. It makes the focus of the story on the budding romance rather than the sexual attraction between the two characters that way you truly feel their connection grow and bud into a true romance.

Where the story started to get predictable was when the townspeople started hating on Kasen and Rowen. Let's be honest there had to be some drama. I think the only flaw in the story for me is the change of pace for the last few chapters. No longer was the time gap several days but rather several weeks. Scenes were rushed and seemed hurried as opposed to the drawn out romance game that encompassed the first part of the book. The ending also seemed much too optimistic. A HEA in a way. Maybe I'm being a cynic but I can't fully accept it as turning into reality, it just seemed too fantastical.

"The thing that's so screwed up about humanity is that people are taught to fear what's different. They think they have to question it instead of just accepting it." - This is as true a statement as any other and I completely agree with it. It is very common to fear the unknown, I'm guilty myself as I'm sure many are as well, but sometimes taking the plunge and just accepting something is a lot of better than not.

My Review
Let me just start with a generalised warning here...This is a GAY romance story...i actually hate that i feel like i have to iterate that fact when in this day and age the gender of the characters shouldn't matter...and to me, it genuinely doesn't but unfortunately, there are still people that will be instantly put off by that.
Ridener has done something here that i personally believe to be a bit of a unicorn in the general indie market. She's created a gay love story that has very little to do with sex, and everything to do with the characters growth and the deepening feelings and progression of their bromance! If you're looking for smut...look elsewhere! this is a 'Hershey kisses' level of sweetness. Now, that's not to say that the characters don't face a lot of obstacles on their way to their nirvana! after all, the small town of Chartreuse that Kasen grew up in isn't exactly the ideal place for two men to be seen openly as a gay couple! Rowan was nursing a broken heart and utterly terrified of falling in love again, Kasen was a virgin with no idea what the heck he was doing and yet...the two seem almost fated to be together.
When rating a book i try and do it in a balanced and unbiased way, are there things that i didnt like about the book? sure...i was disgusted with the way the couple were treated, i hated that they were ostracised and discriminated against and that people could be so ignorant and intolerant in this day and age.....but the harsh cold fact is....this happens to people every day. There are a few grammatical errors etc in the book but frankly, you'll be too busy smiling smugly to yourself and nibbling your lips to notice.
In case you guys cant tell...i absolutely adored every single word! so i'm going to leave you with my favourite quote from this rough diamond!

A very touching story with a message of hope.

Kasen is a young man who doesn't struggle with his identity, but with other's acceptance.
Rowan also listens to the towns radio station. There he listens to Cool Kasey, the DJ at the station. Rowan really enjoys listening to Kasey. After offering to bring Kasey some dinner over, he finds Kasen at the station, as Kasey. There, it all begins. Rowan takes Kasen out of town for an early breakfast. Just a small Waffle House, but a first for Kasen. Rowan and Kasen's journey begins there. Hidden thoughts and actions slowly begin between the two.
This was a very touching story. Very well written and put together nicely. I don't usually read these kind of stories, but Tonya is my friend. I'd read anything she has written. Although this type of book was different for me, I learned so much about the lifestyle of two men who are attracted to each other, and the struggles they go through, just to be together. If you're looking for hardcore sex scenes, you might want to chose a different book. This is about tender exploring, finding someone you can be comfortable with, slowly receive feelings for, and experiencing what love feels like. For the first time. I loved this book and hope to read on about Rowan and Kasen's journey together.

I wasn't for sure what to expect when I found out this was a M/M Romance, because I hadn't read one until now. This story goes beyond the fact whether it's M/M or M/F and will have you emotional wrapped up in this book.

Kasen has lived in the small town of Chartreuse, Alabama his entire life. He hasn't any experiences outside of this town. He recently moved into his own apartment, getting away from his mother who is not the loving mom she should be. Kasen is a very timid individual in person, but he let's himself be someone totally different while working nights as a radio personality. Being from a small town, he isn't comfortable with his sexuality because that's not what people believe in around here.

Rowan has recently moved to Chartreuse from Boston. He has always wanted to live in a small town where everyone knows each other and start a business. So that's just what he has done. He is used to being very open about his sexuality, but just after being in this town he believes it may be frowned upon. Rowan knows that he needs love in his life but after being hurt in the past he hasn't put himself back out there since.

Kasen and Rowans' journey is filled with love, hatred, and acceptance. They face many challenges that no person should have to deal with. Being together, Kasen learns to be stronger as an individual and Rowan learns to overcome his past to take a chance at being happy once again.

This is a very inspiring read that left me thinking about how people have to face these types of challenges everyday. I must say I enjoyed my first M/M Romance, so thanks T.E. Tidener for writing this beautiful story.

I enjoyed this book. TE was able to bring to light the ugliness of many issues that people today still suffer from. It was truly an enlightening book. Even though this book was an mm book, the details of their relationship was written in a beautiful way so if you have been shy about reading such a story, this is a perfect one to start with. It was truly a story of learning to be who you are no matter what, to learn to stand up for yourself and to love unconditionally.

Kasen lived with his mother until he finally decided to move out on his own. He had a very sheltered life, never going outside of the town limits. And oh his momma was anything but loving towards him growing up. Then when he got the courage to tell her that he was gay, she was less than pleased with him. He only ever wanted to be understood and loved.

Rowan comes to the small town to open up a veterinary office. He falls in love with the closeness and how everyone is so very welcoming and friendly. He has been running from a past relationship that has left him gun shy of getting involved with anyone else that is until he walked in the local dog park and sees Kasen there.

As they become friends, their feelings for each other become stronger. They explore and are with each other daily, some of the narrow minded people in town don’t like it one bit. Things start to happen that put them both in danger.

But in the end the town comes to the aid of Rowan and Kasen showing them that they can have the happiness that they deserve in this small town.

** I was provided a copy of the book by the author in exchange for an honest review. **

Chartreuse is a good read that touches on a subject that is still taboo in today’s society: homosexuality. Kasen Reed was a shy nineteen year old living in a small town in Alabama trying to get from under his suffocating mother. He was employed as a late night DJ at the local radio station and had few friends. Rowen Kelly moved to the Alabama small town after being betrayed by his last lover. Rowen hoped to start anew. Upon meeting, both men were drawn to each other. Kasen was unsure of how to react; whereas, Rowen knew he needed to take things cautiously in order to win Kasen’s heart. The people in small town Chartreuse were not happy to have a homosexual couple amongst them. The citizens tried all they could to deter the couple including criminal acts. However, one of Kasen’s high school classmates took up for the couple even though it caused her husband to abuse her. Kasen and Rowen take her in as the citizens of the town begin to take sides.

If M/M is not really your thing, don’t worry, this book does not have hot and steamy sex scenes between the two. The few love scenes included are sweet and not detailed. This book is more about the tender side of relationships as well as the acceptance of what is perceived as different. All in all, this book is a good and tender read depicting a situation in today’s world in a realistic manner.

I admire people who create something from their experience, imagination, and self, and that creation out into the world for the rest of us to enjoy.

I really enjoyed some of the descriptions, but much of the book is "meh" to me.

There is a description of Boston in winter that I enjoyed:
- the drivers on I95 who drive as though there is no snow.
- people shoveling out their parking space on the street, and marking it as theirs
- the ruts in snow from a new snow falling before the previous one was plowed up.

Which ended with a description of Bostonians welcome spring, like a female college student spreads her legs. That bit turned me off.

It is odd to read a book where both characters smoke. Rowan constantly exhales smoke through his nostrils. Kasen does that only sometimes.

Kasen is 19 years old, lives in a small town in Alabama, and has never been to the next town over until Rowan takes him. Though Kasen could have gone to France on his senior trip(!). I think as a cultural experience, at some point during Kasen's schooling, his class should have been loaded on a bus and driven to that next town over.

I have quibbles about spelling and grammar. They pale in comparison to the impression that Walmart is a good thing to happen to a small town. That Denny's is better than Waffle House. That the highlight of a trip to Montgomery AL is the zoo. (Maybe because of the diversity training at work, I think first of civil rights, not the zoo.)

Kasen has never been outside his little town in his entire 19 years of life. Sheltered from seeing and experiencing the world by his dominering mother. He's found some measure of happiness by finally living on his own and being a DJ at the local radio station where he can open himself up because he's too shy to talk to people face to face, but something's missing.

Rowan at 26 is tired of life in the big city of Boston so he decided to move to Chartreuse, Alabama and open his own vet practice. He was spurned by love years ago and refuses to open himself up to the possibilities again. But he also misses compainionship, the two meet and sparks fly, but will either be able to make the first move or will their insecurities keep them from finding happiness?

Being different is never easy and in a small town it's even worse, when people find out about them their reactions could change everything.

Kasen is shy and a bit naive, he lives in his own world because he's too afraid of people not accepting him to open up. Rowan is not ashamed to admit who he is, but he knows the world can be a crewl place. The two together open up each others worlds and find a peace together they never knew before. Seeing them both come ot of their shells you get to see the start of a beautiful relationship.

Chartreuse by T. E. Ridener

This is a must read for every human being. It is not just a story about finding love in the smallest of towns, but it is about the acceptance of loving someone no matter who they are.

In the small Alabama town of Chartreuse, Kasen Reed has never known love. His father was not around and his mother was always critical of who he was. Finally able to move out of her home at the age of 19 into his own apartment and getting a job that he loves at the local radio station, Kasen is content. But he is missing the one thing he has always wanted; unconditional love.

Rowan Kelly is devastated by a nasty breakup and moves to the small town of Chartreuse as the local vet. The a last thing he wanted was a connection to another person. Afraid to open up, he built walls surrounding his heart.

A chance encounter at the local dog park has set them on a unconventional friendship. Are these two ready to accept love in the smallest of places? Can a town break down their walls and accept everyone's chance at love?

This was such a poignant story about not just finding love, but accepting that love. Everybody should have the God given right to love and be loved no matter sex, race, or religion. T. E. Ridener has done an outstanding job of creating a story not just about love but also about acceptance.

Libro carino, come lettura leggera e senza troppe pretese.

This is the third book of T. E. Ridener's that I have read and I have to admit to this one being my favourite by far.

This is a story about love, through and through. It is about how hard it can be to have any relationship and make it work, let alone when you think the whole town is against you because of some thick-headed bigots. This is a very emotive book, written with great depth of feeling and I'm not ashamed to say that I was in tears at the end. Whether they were good tears or sad tears I'll leave for you to find out when you read it.

The characters in this book grow into themselves in a way that everyone, regardless of sexuality, can relate to. It is a general part of growing up, of finding out who you are, of what you can do, of experiencing new things like going to a new restaurant or bar for the first time.

Absolutely loved this book and would (and will!) totally recommend it.

What a beautiful story! This author never ceases to amaze me. This time the story is different from the others I’ve read from her. This is a real life story, something that happens to a lot of people even now when we are already in the XXI century. People still judge other people for their religion, colour, sex, or whatever other reason they can find. The story tells us about how two people meet and get to know each other. Rowan is older and has more experience whilst Kasen is younger and has no experience at all. They fell in love with each other and they have to fight very hard for their love. They have lot of problems with intolerant people who want to hurt them to make them leave the small city forever. I wish there were lot of places like Chartreuse where tolerance speaks louder than intolerance. Well done Tonya! Your message is rolling and it’s not going to stop.
