2018.09.04: Best comfort read--ever.

Sherlock paused. “Are you implying I’m contrary?” He sounded genuinely astonished by this.

“Idiot,” John said, fondly, and closed his eyes.

“I’m not… contrary,” Sherlock sputtered, offended. “What I am is right. All the time.”

And
Sherlock followed John’s gaze and said, in exasperation, “I’m wearing gloves!”

“I’m taking your ring to be cleaned. I’ll get it as soon as you’re done with the sheep intestines.”

“Don’t pretend you’re not Scottish,” muttered Sherlock. “You eat these things.”

Sixth read and marvelous. My go to comfort read.
Third or fourth readand now I'm rating this story 4 stars. Still long, but so good.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars

Johnlock
Exploration of the childrearing argument of which is more dominate, nature or nurture? Sherlock has been cloned and he and John raise Sherlock 2.0. It's not fast, but if you like the idea and are amused by Sherlock, then this is interesting. John has epiphanies and Mycroft is a fascinating comet-like character throughout the story. This is primarily character driven, but there are a few external elements that affect the story significantly.

“I’m wagering that some of you might not be intensely lazy. Some of you might not have me to take advantage of.”

He said it lightly, because he meant it lightly, but Sherlock said, “We’d have to clone you, too. We cannot have all these Sherlock Holmeses running around without yous to accompany them. What would become of all of them?”

John stopped at the top of the stairs, turned around. Sherlock was a couple of steps behind him, meaning their heights were basically evened out. He tried to think of something to say. “They’d be brilliant, temperamental geniuses.”

“They’d be lonely,” said Sherlock, gravely, his gaze even and steady and true.

Right, by this point, my heart has melted into indistinct blobs, but damn, that was a very sweet indirect love confession, typical of Sherlock (I can so imagine his serious mien when he utters those words). That, is how a true love should be. It's more than carnal pleasure, it's a promise of forever, companionship, a sense of contentment just to have that someone special by your side, growing old together.

(Anyway, brb, gonna continue reading, not finished yet but I need to post that quote and GR's stupid 420-char limit in stat update won't allow me to do it)

2021 Re-Read:

I just keep coming back to this one, the moment I have any excuse at all. It always makes me think of this meme I saw on Tumblr ages ago:

2020 Re-Read:

Only six months, and I'm back reading this monster of a fic. It's just so good. This one is a little long for a "reread often" story, but apparently I don't care.

Original 2019 Review:

Oh my gosh, that was amazing! I have the biggest "book hangover" now.

I liked the premise of this novel, but it was a tad long in my opinion. And I wished there was more crimes to be solved. Another thing was that with the final crime to solve, I assumed Sherlock would have looked at the cab to deduce something. I thought the two Sherlock's were darling together. I liked that it wasn't just one big soppy story of romance. And I liked how true to character the MCs were. I would have liked to read more of Mycroft's romance too. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this. I can't believe this quality of writing is not published. This was better than a lot of the tripe that is out there for $$.

Long ass fic is long. It took me nearly three weeks to finish this story. And while I enjoyed this kid fic...and how the kid came about...the story would have flowed much better with a bit if editing. The last bit is good (though how those people are still even alive is a mystery) but it tends to meander a bit in the middle. Still it is a good story and I did finish it when I could have easily given up, so it was probably worth the read.

Quite probably my favourite Sherlock fan fiction.

The British government has managed to produce the first successful clone baby. Of course, it just has to be a clone of Sherlock.

Named Oliver, Sherlock and John set about raising him as their son.

Oliver is perhaps just about the best original character in fan fiction. Even though he's a baby, he has a distinctive personality, and that sets this little ebook way above other Sherlock baby fics.

Adorable, funny, and angsty, "Nature and Nuture" is a lovely fan fiction and a bloody good read.

Definitely a must-read for Sherlock fans.
Funny, adorable and engaging.
I love baby Oliver and his expressions.
One of my top 5 fanfiction favourites.

While I typically prefer case fics when it comes to Sherlock Holmes and avoid clone babies like the plague, this is just one of those fics where I just love everything that happens. There were just so many moments and bits of dialogue that genuinely brought me so much joy. If you’re a BBC johnlock fan who wants 57 chapters of John and Sherlock being heart-meltingly adorable fathers (together) this ones for you. I love gay idiots raising a child together. This helped pull me out of a reading slump.

Dropped at chapter 18. Too boring. The child is quite creepy. John act unsecure, his absurd inner-turmoils are stretched.

Genuinely the best comfort read. When I first read this, it was because a friend told me “it sounds weird, but I promise it’s amazing”, and that was 100% correct.

A charming fic, sweet without being saccharine, light moments balanced with the frictions and griefs of living and caring, in families by blood and by choice. There are many clever lines and scenes, and sensitive insights (keeping in mind it's AU from any backstory or developments introduced in seasons 3 or 4, including the Holmes parents).

N.b., I shelved it "low-conflict", but that doesn't mean "no-conflict", it's more a matter of percentage. Their lives involve investigating murders, some with more detail and/or action than others, and there's a highly personal dramatic episode in the end. (SPOILER: No worries; it ends well.)

I think if I start discussing it in greater depth this review will get ridiculously long, so I'll stop here. Unless you're a firm baby-avoider or slash-avoider (including eventually-revealed minor Mystrade, btw!), I definitely recommend this well-written and well-edited story.

*****

(Oh, I didn't realize my previous reading had been so recent, but whatever: I felt like re-reading it, so I did.)

Btw, the cloning premise made me hesitate over the "sci-fi, near-future or now" shelf, but I eventually decided against it [again].

When I first read this 4 years ago, I only gave it 3 stars as I didn't much like any JohnLock or Mystrade that wasn't also casefic even if it was well written or well plotted. Since then, I have come to appreciate the fics dealing with the day-to-day lives of the characters, so I'm giving it 4 stars this time around.

Au and parent lock! Yes. The description is far more cheesy then the actual fic but honestly how well can you say "Sherlock was cloned. John and Sherlock must raise baby Sherlock/Oliver now and many a hi-jinx ensued"
Believe me it's one of the best!

Didn't hate it, didn't love it. So long - I started this fic about a year ago. I'd read a bit, stop and read a bunch of other stuff, then come back to it. But, I guess the fact I came back to it was a good thing?

It's lovely, but again, too good to be true. I just prefer john lock relationship in a more complicated and torturous way.
