Her Muse, Lord Patrick

Rate this book
Lord Patrick Delaney promised to deliver an important message to his best friend’s sister, but promises are hard to keep when one becomes a ghost. After Patrick is attacked in the forest and tossed into a river, he is surprised to wake at the country estate where the lovely Miss Laura Chetwey is mourning the loss of her brother. Even more surprising, she seems to be the only person who can see or hear him, which should make his mission easy to complete… if only he could remember the message he is supposed to deliver. Laura’s brother has been missing for four months and she has come to believe he perished at sea. Taking refuge at her uncle’s estate, she tries to escape her grief by immersing herself in the imaginary world of fiction by penning a horrid novel. But the line between reality and make-believe becomes hard to distinguish when a handsome ghost arrives at Torrington Abbey to protect her and steals her heart in the process. Trapped between the span of life and death, Patrick fears he will vanish forever once he remembers the news of Laura's brother. Will they ever have a chance to be together, or is the opportunity for love lost to them forever?

My review:

Do they have a future together when one is a living breathing being and the other an intangible version of his corporeal self.

This is my first read by Mrs Jane Charles and not my last.
I loved her writing style, it flows effortlessly and smoothly. Her characters are nice and caring persons but not perfect.

At first when I began reading this book, the book Si C’était Vrai by Marc Levy popped in my head, its movie adaptation was Just Like Heaven. Outside the subject, there is nothing else in common but as I loved it, i was sure to enjoy this one, and I was right.
It was a very entertaining read, at first it took time to set the storyline, introducing each one of the heroes in their environment, then from their first encounter, when Patrick influences Laura’s writing, it was enjoyable to see how they interact together and the awkward situations when they are other people with them.
The more time they spend together, the more they come to realize they have found their fated mate.
Without a sex scene, the author conveyed how slowly but surely they fall for the other. How a feather touch or a gasp of air can be charged with sensuality.
Then as the story moved faster, linking the background plot to the main heroes story. They must face the issue that threaten their own chance of a future together.
4.5 stars for this short but delightful read

I was granted a free copy of this book, but here is my true and unbiased opinion.

Such an imaginative story that was so unexpected but utterly charming! Our hero, Lord Patrick is on his way to his best friend's house to deliver a message to his sister, Miss Chetwey. He is attacked and dumped into the river and he next appears as a ghost in a room where Laura, Miss Chetway is writing a book. The strange think though is she cannot hear him, at least at first...
But later Laura hears a voice helping her with her characters and the story! What? Oh yes, just so much fun! Soon she understands it is her brother's best friend Patrick but he is a ghost! She soon learns he had come to give her a message from her brother, if he can remember it that is!
Delightful and yes there is certainly a romance that I could not wait to find out what happened!! Truly loved this story!

What a delightful quick read! A clean regency romance with paranormal overtures (ghost, witch), and a fated mate theme. It's not a deep read, not a lot of suspense. There is a lot of honesty between characters because time may run out.

----SPOILERS----
February. Patrick is riding through the forest on his way to deliver news of what happened to Blake, his best friend, to Blake's sister, Laura. She no longer lives in the family house in Cheshire but with her aunt and uncle in Cumberland. He's been on the road 3 days, not really sleeping. He is set upon by brigands who beat him, rob him, and drop him in a river to drown.

Laura is in half mourning. Blake's ship should have arrived in October. Her parents died five years ago. Blake was coming home from Barbados and expected her to have a suitor. Her aunt and uncle have no children. The east wing is closed because it's haunted, according to Mildred the maid. Laura investigates. She finds a woman's office and determines to write a horrid novel. She cleans it and gets to writing.

Patrick is in the room. He talks to her, nothing. He waves his hand in her face, nothing. They go down to dinner. He gets a headache, trying to remember. He takes a nap in the office, wakes, goes to the billiards room, can't pick up the cue. Guess I'm dead. Naps again.

Laura wakes at 4 a.m., doesn't get dressed, and goes to write. Patrick wakes up, too, and desires her, which is going to be awful as he has no way to touch her. He tells her the person she's basing her hero on is a cad, she changes it to someone else. He says You might as well pick me. She decides to base her hero on a man of her dreams. He says black hair, she writes black hair. He says grey blue eyes, she writes grey blue eyes. He says red hair, she crosses out black hair, writes red hair, and questions herself. Patrick is a muse! She starts describing her heroine, and he describes her. He kisses under her ear, and she shivers. She tries out names for her hero, hears Are ye mad? after her suggestion. She picks Patrizio, Perfect. She describes the hero without influence, and in his arms, the heroine feel safe and not alone. She starts to cry, decides she's tired, gets up to go to bed. Don't go. Who's here? I am, Patrick. She learns he's only been there a few days and he knows her brother. She's starting to see him. She wants to know what the message is, and he can't remember. She sees him clearly now, and knows him. Her aunt comes in, tell her to come down for breakfast. She goes to get dressed, is in the process of removing her nightgown, and wonders where he is. She did feel a kiss earlier.

Patrick discovers he can walk through walls. He goes to discover which room she's in. He pokes his head through the door as she comes in with her towel on. She squeaks when she sees him, then announces she's going to dress privately. He winks and leaves. When she comes out, she says Don't come in my bedroom, he says Okay while thinking of ways to do so.

The ladies go shopping. When men come to visit uncle, Patrick goes into the study, too. These men want help getting rid of the brigands in the forest who are murdering men. Was I murdered? Uncle gives permission to one of the men to court Laura, and Patrick is against it.

Aunt is gossiping. Laura gets bored, buys writing supplies, wanders, and sees a funeral. Luckily, the dead person is blond. She wants to go to the doctor because he has death masks and a local artist's renderings of the five victims during the past five months. Aunt says no. Aunt tells her the brigands have been robbing houses of food and valuables in common rooms. When she gets home, she runs to her office, but Patrick isn't there.

Patrick is having a hard time waking up. His eyes are heavy, he's very hot, and his body aches.

Uncle tells Aunt and Laura that the footmen have seen strangers's footprints around their estate.

Patrick wakes in the middle of the night, races to the office, but she's not there. He goes to her bedroom. Looking out the window, he sees three men coming toward the house, then two footmen show up. Patrick is determined to spend his nights defending Laura. He goes to check the house. She wakes up, figures it was a just a dream. Laura goes to her office, and sees somebody outside. The man looks at her and smiles. Patrick finds her. They both wish they could have met while he was alive. She touches his face as best she can. He gives her a kiss. She wishes he could hold her. He gives her another kiss. He's her first kiss. He doesn't want her there at night because it's not safe. Take the poker. They go back to her room, and she asks him to stay. He curses Blake for not introducing them while he was alive.

When she wakes, he tells her she snores a little and she talks in her sleep. Oh Patrick, I love you. I do. Then he laughs. He wants her to tell Uncle about the man last night. Her maid suggest a not mourning dress, Patrick says Blake is not dead, so she agrees.

At breakfast, he escorts her to the table and tries to pull a chair back for her. She tells Uncle, who wants her and Aunt to go to the other house. Unless Patrick can go too, she's not going. Patrick whispers in her ear, and she repeats, that Uncle could hire soldiers who are home from war and have no job. They could protect the grounds and even search the forest. Uncle likes the idea, but it will take time to get set up and he doesn't even know how. Patrick says Radburn. Patrick remember something, and races to the office. Laura follows as soon as she can.

He remembers Blake did not return on the ship, but that's all. She bends to tend to the fire, and he gets an erection. They work on the book, she shows him the outline, and he suggests something original. She's going to use the disappearance of uncle's sister. After a while, she told him she wants to know what happened to Blake but she doesn't want him to leave. Would you have noticed me in the ballroom or would the pretty ladies have distracted you? None is more beautiful than you. You are kind. No, I would have written my name by every waltz. They dance, she draws nearer, they kiss. She thinks she feels linen and muscles, he wipes away a tear. Is he becoming real?

Aunt says come downstairs, you have a suitor. Patrick growls. He's so frustrated! He knows he shouldn't, but he goes down to the dining room anyway. She asks Franklin if he's traveled. She's wanted to go to Ireland to see the fairies and leprechauns. Franklin is too serious. What about ghosts? Those don't exist either. She announces she's going to travel to Ireland to see Patrick's family and see if they've heard what happened. Franklin says that's not wise, and she stiffens. After he leaves, she tells her aunt not to match them. Patrick leaves to sleep. Her real reason to travel to Ireland is to meet his family, look at a portrait.

Patrick dreams he's in hell again. He wakes in Laura's bed, determined to not swear or have lustful thoughts because he's not going back there. He promises her that, if it were in his power, he would marry her today. They say I love you to each other. He would have snatched her up right out of the schoolroom and never let another gentleman know she exists. Her maid comes in, Patrick says I'll wait for you in the office.

Uncle has sent for soldiers and for word of Blake's ship. Uncle tell her he has given Franklin permission to court her. She goes to the office, and Patrick is trying to do the right thing by pushing her away. He promises they have now, but when spring comes, he's going to hide so she will find someone alive.

They wonder why he can sit on a chair but not grasp the simplest thing. She wants to set the book in a castle so there'll be a dungeon. He says the abbey doesn't have a dungeon, but it has a cellar. He and Blake used to play in it. He leads the way after she promises to only go where he deems safe. He goes ahead in a dark place, she gets scared, and goes after him. She sees a light, calls his name, and he yells at her to get away. She turns, runs, and stumbles. The bad guy finds her. Patrick holds her hand, and says We'll run when I say. The bad guy gets her anyway. He hauls her back to their encampment in the cellar. Patrick talks to her, and she replies, freaking out the bad guys. He instructs her on how to hurt a man. He sees his saddle and some of his clothes. Patrick then instructs her on how to use the heel of her hand to hit a bad guy's nose. She talks too much, the bad guy gets unsettled, and backhands her unconscious. Patrick says I'll kill you for that.

Patrick wakes up in a dark room that is too hot. An old woman is tending to him. He is not far from the abbey. He's too weak to go. She calls for her grandchildren. The girl recognizes that the one he loves is in danger. He explains the danger she's in, and the grandmother asks how he knows. I was there. The girl says, See I told you? When his heartbeat was barely there and he lay so still, I knew he wasn't with us. Grandmother says Just like your mother. Patrick describes the bad guys and the main one gave his name, Ben Skrewd. Patrick, Cavan the grandson, and three others ride to the abbey. Patrick remembers everything now.

Laura awakes with a staggering headache. Patrick is gone, and she's afraid. They'll decide what to do with her when they get back, they tie her up and leave.

Patrick and the group get to the house. They pound on the door, Laura is in danger. Blake is on the stairs. She's been missing for hours. Patrick, Blake, and Cavan are entering from the house, while Uncle and others are coming from the garden. They get there just as Ben and the others are leaving. She smiles, You're here! Ben sees him too! He shoots Ben, then rushes to her. She doesn't recognize him. Don't ya know me? She looks in his eyes, then feels his week-old beard. He unties her and they embrace, kiss, I love you. Blake wants to know what's going on. Patrick says I'll tell you as soon as we get her out of here. He stands up and passes out.

Patrick has been out since yesterday. Blake doesn't believe her story. He was delayed because someone accused him of being the father, but that woman conceived a month before he got into port. Then he got malaria.

Patrick awakens, but not in hell. In lilacs. Blake demands his version of the story before they have time to collude. He's about to call him out. Patrick eats, tells the same story, then they wonder how it all happened. The granddaughter, Brighid, explains (after blushing when Blake recognizes her).

“I believe Lord Patrick was meant to pass on, but his spirit needed to deliver the message to Miss Chetwey first.” She looked at Patrick. “You could not move on until you met your one last obligation.” Patrick looked at Laura. “We had thought the same possibility.” “Everything changed when Lord Patrick found his life mate. The spirit refused to let go and leave this world or leave Miss Chetwey behind.” Brighid looked to Blake. “It was danger that broke the limbo state. Had Miss Chetwey not needed him, they might have continued on, hovering between life and death, long after Lord Patrick’s body died.”

Nearly 2 months later, they're married.

A different take on a romance, another very good, enjoyable book from the author.

There were some typos but I tend to overlook these if I’m absorbed in a story, which I was in this case.
The main characters were very likeable & I was willing for things to end happily.

It was a very charming ghost story with added twists (which the author is very good at in her books) that kept me reading until the end. Definitely a different twist on a Regency romance.

Oooh! Spine tingly read - although not as eerie as Elizabeth Gaskell's "Gothic Tales". A rather lovely story about love (sort of beyond the grave), but with a heartwarming HEA.
I ate it up - it was scrumptious reading!

Very Original! Historical romance with a paranormal vibe!

I was caught the moment I read the synopsis of this novel by Jane Charles. The idea for this plot was so original I had to read this book! And I am so glad I did!
Her Muse, Lord Patrick, is a delightful historical tale with just a touch of paranormal, combining two of my favorite genres in one! The romance is sweet and just a bit of sexy, adding a bit of spice to the story without overwhelming the plot.
Jane Charles does a wonderful job of creating a post Napolian War English setting with a gothic feel to it. She adds to that a group of ruffians who are not adverse to killing and kidnapping to get what they want. The twist that makes this so unique is our heroine meets and falls in love with a ghost! The burning question that adds to the suspense is whether or not our hero, Lord Patrick, is really dead.
I could not put this book down. I had to see how Ms. Charles resolved this conflict. She did a masterful job of keeping me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. There is a happily ever after, which I demand from all my favorite romance authors. And no cliffhangers which is wonderful as I will read more in this series but still have so many books left on my TBR shelf.
A very enjoyable interlude. The type of book that makes you want to curl up on your couch, with your blanket and a cup of tea in front of your fireplace, while the world outside just fades away for a little while. Exactly what I want when I pick up a new book!

This was a different story in historical romance than I usually read but I discovered a fun & charming "ghost story" with wonderful characters that I hoped for a HEA for them in the end. Lord Patrick Delaney was delivering a message to his best friend's sister, Miss Laura Chetway; however, he was attacked & thrown in the river before his task was accomplished. He has now appeared as a ghost in front of Laura & she finally can see & hear him but he has forgotten the content of the message he was to deliver.

This story is really so much fun & after getting acquainted with one another, they find romance blooming between them. Poor Laura has not only lost her brother but now, finds herself falling in love with a ghost! What will happen? Patrick is a ghost & obviously, Laura is not! I could not turn the pages quickly enough to find out what happens with this couple. I highly recommend this entertaining, short book to all romance readers.

This is the first in the Muses series. Patrick is on his way to deliver an important message to the sister of his best friend when he is attacked.

Laura is staying with her aunt and uncle and is worrying about the apparent disappearance of her brother. She decides to explore the house and discovers an closed off wing (which is reputedly haunted) and decides to write a “horrid” novel.

When the ghostly form of Patrick starts to appear to her she uses him as inspiration for the book.

Patrick discovers a threat to the safety of the woman her gas come to love (he is unable to remember the full reason of the need of his visit) so does all he can to keep Laura safe.

I will not say more to avoid spoilers - PLEASE read the book as I loved it!

Laura

Brought to stay at her aunt and uncle's estate, Laura is having trouble finding activities to occupy her mind and decides to write a novel to stave off the boredom.
Lord Richard has been racing to reach Laura to deliver news of her brother, riding for three days with only brief stops to rest. Thinking to save time, Richard takes the path he and his friend used to take through the forest to the mansion, only wanting to deliver his message and fall into bed.
Neither realizes that events are about to throw them together in a completely unexpected way. A sound tingling story!

When is a ghost not a ghost? When Lord Patrick is caught between life and death and "haunting Lady Laura. In Jane Charles' book a ghostly Lord Patrick shows up in the haunted wing of Torrington Abbey where Laura is trying to write a book. The more they interact the more real he becomes.
Meanwhile, the physical Lord Patrick had been attacked on the road to deliver a message to Laura from her brother and his ghost can't remember what happened to him.
This is a fun, fast read and you can't help but want these two to be able to get together for real and find their Happily Ever After.

A ghostly muse

Orphan Laura's brother Blake is missing so an uncle steps in as guardian taking her to the country where she mourns Blake. Suddenly Lord Patrick Delaney, Blake's best friend, appears at Torrington Abbey as a ghost she alone can hear and see becoming her ghostly muse. He has a message from Blake for her but can't remember it having been left for dead by bandits in the nearby forest. The story that unfolds is filled with danger, intrigue, and romance that keeps you wondering what will happen next. I highly recommend.

Her Muse, Lord Patrick by Jane Charles is book one in the Muse series. I thought this was a delightful story. It reminded me of the old Rex Harrison movie “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir”. Her Muse has some Gothic qualities - an old estate with a touch of mystery, and a handsome “ghost” that haunts the beautiful heroine. This was my first book by Jane Charles and it definitely won’t be my last. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series. I was given a copy of this book.

I love paranormal historicals and this one was the perfect balance! Laura found love with an impossible situation while believing her brother dead, without proof. Patrick is attacked and left for dead while on the way to deliver a message to Blake's sister. When the 2 meet, sparks fly, even with Patrick being a "ghost"! The scenes between Laura and Patrick while he's not solid were on the steamy side and wonderful! The ending was the perfect wrap up!

An ok story

An interesting plot for a story. Never come across this type of story before.

This was an OK read. I wasnt blown away by it but it was still good. The characters were well written and I enjoyed parts of it.

This would appeal to people who enjoy Regency books and supernatural tales.

They say love will find a way and it certainly did for Laura and Patrick

He's a ghost with a message for her. She is trying to write a novel. No one would believe her if she told them about her new friend but he's vowed to help her. He's also promised not to leave her, that is until she is in real danger and then he disappears only to reappear with her missing brother.......

This is a fun, sweet, entertaining read. Patrick and Laura are interesting, intriguing, relatable, entertaining, captivating characters. They captured my attention from the start and held it until the very end. The plot was so much fun to read and the romance fit the characters. The story is easy to read and get into.

I enjoyed the audio version of this story and the narrator.

This book contains suspense, supernatural events, and, of course, love!

First off, It was interesting how the characters in Jane's, Jerrica's, and Ava's book collide together. I really love it, and it entices me to read more of their books!

In this book, boy meets girl, but not the way you think! Patrick comes out as a ghost (or is he?) and meets Laura, as he is determined to deliver a message he doesn't remember from Laura's brother. At first, Laura doesn't see him at all, but eventually hears him and finally meet him face to face. With their encounters together, they find love that encompasses all understanding.

I love Laura's character. She's not the type to swoon at little things, and even ventures off to the rumored haunted east wing. Though the only thing that bothered me was how easy it was to go to the east wing, since I thought it would have been locked up tight as it wasn't used at all.

Patrick's story was mysterious, and it makes you want to read through the whole book to find out how he became a ghost, and why he doesn't even seem like one. I was actually tempted to skip through it, but I resisted and prevailed! It's totally worth it to read all the way.

A quirky read

A delightful story with a temporary ghost in residence at the Abbey that only the heroine can see. When she begins writing a novel the ghost intervens. Then there is the three villains who and where are they hiding after murdering and robbing folk?

A delightful change of pace

I wasn't sure what to expect of this novel. The description said the hero was somehow the heroine's disembodied writing muse. Being an author myself, this was enough for me to take a chance. I wasn't disappointed. The characters themselves are rather typical for a Regency romance, but the settings and the plot makes everything shine.
My only complaint was the author's insistence on being historically and geographically accurate and have many characters say "ya" or "yar" for "you" and "your." Otherwise a very enjoyable read.

Cute but rushed ending

Overall the story was cute. A bit simplistic and basic, but cute... except closer to the end when all of a sudden everything hurriedly wraps up so fast that you feel cheated. It's an easy quick read and definitely a sweet one, but I was left disappointed.

Interesting twist

A regency romance like no other, involving spirits, danger, and romance. Throughout this book I was interested to see how the hero’s ghost would become flesh and bone. It’s an interesting premise, and certainly original.
