I don't want to give any spoilers, but just let me say - the first chapter of Neverlove had me practically hyperventilating. It was that powerful! It was one of those screamers where you're yelling, "No! Don't do it!"

Although a young adult paranormal novel, the story deals with some very real life issues. I won't spoil it by saying what these issues are specifically, but think choices and consequences, vulnerability and strength, life and death, guilt and redemption. Evil. Love. It's these issues that lead through the paranormal world created by Angela Brown. It involves agents of heaven and hell, shadow-jumping and the Withers, where the Cleansers and Harvestors go to fight over lost souls.

But mostly, it's a tale about Abby, Basil and forbidden love. I understood their choices and how they ended up where they were. With all odds against them, I rooted for them wholeheartedly.

Did they make it? You'll have to read it to find out...

First chapter and you know you're reading a paranormal romance unlike any other. First impression and I know I'm already THERE, already digging the story. Why? Because I love when an author can combine real-world problems with supernatural problems, and the main female character of NEVERLOVE is dealing with a terrible, tragic, real-world problem--which the author deals with very well.

Second impression comes when the main male character is introduced and he also has a very real, very different real-world problem. And with him, we get a lovely twist that is completely unique to this story and WORKS. Want a reason--a good reason--to fall for the bad boy? Try NEVERLOVE's Basil. After this you'll wonder what you ever saw in those other stories' bad boys.

This book kept me turning the page, faster and faster, to find out what would happen. It's billed as an angel/demon story and yes there are demons, but I promise you, you have not read anything like this book.

NEVERLOVE blew my mind, kept me on the edge of my seat and gave me everything I wanted in a young adult paranormal romance. I will be anxiously awaiting book two!

Dark and twisty from start to finish. This is a unique look at the afterlife and what happens to souls in the next stage. It took my breath away with the first page and let me get it back. Loved it!

Neverlove is a wonderful debut novel from Angela Brown. The main characters of Abigail and Basil are easy to root for, and both won my sympathy and affection from the beginning. The story deals with classic themes of good vs. evil and heaven vs. hell, but Brown presents a fresh take on these ideas and I found her take on the afterlife to be very creative. The story is dark and often heartbreaking, but also provides moments of humor that help to balance out the dramatic themes. Brown consistently builds up the suspense and as I got farther along in the book I was reading like crazy and couldn't wait to see what happened next. I am looking forward to reading more from Brown and to returning to the world of the Shadow Jumpers.

I really enjoyed this story. I thought the supernatural aspect was very interesting and quite multi-layered. I liked how even though there is some very dark and quite heartbreaking subject matter in the book, it never once felt depressing or overwhelming.

I liked the main girl, Abby, I thought she was a nice girl who had to overcome unbelievable trauma as a victim of sexual abuse and even though she let her circumstances break her once, she didn't let it happen again when she was given a second chance at a new life and I admired that about her because she showed tremendous strength to be able to carry on the way she did and how she never gave up on hope for a better life. I also liked the love interest, Basil. I thought he was a very sweet guy and even though his awkward charm was cute, it was still a little heartbreaking because he had no self confidence at all even though he was a handsome guy which all stemmed from years of isolation and emotional abuse at the hands of his mother.

I liked the relationship between the two because it was very sweet even though I thought it happened a little fast but there was a supernatural aspect of it that could have contributed to the insta-love, though I'm not sure. I wish there was a little more show instead of tell, like Abby and Basil had only a few interactions before they were in love and I wished we could have seen the moments that were alluded to where Abby and Basil got to know each other. Considering all of the trouble and loneliness they both experienced in life, I would have liked to have seen those moments with them opening up to each other and developing a bond. I also liked the forbidden love aspect of the relationship and that they were both on opposite sides with Abby being on the side of good as a soul cleanser and Basil on the side of evil as a shadow jumper or a reaper and servant of the devil, however unwittingly.

Another character involved was Father Quanon, whom I had mixed feelings about. I was kind of put off by him because considering Abby's history especially with older men taking advantage of her, I didn't like the attention he paid her and the jealousy and semi-cockblocking of her and Basil. I thought it was inappropriate. Father Quanon thankfully never tried anything with Abby and was eventually an integral part in Abby and Basil saving the day so I couldn't dislike him completely even if he made me feel a little squicky at times.

Overall, I really liked this book and I thought that it was totally unique in a lot of aspects from a WOC as a the female protagonist to the use of soul cleansers and reapers. I hope there will be a sequel because I feel like there are so many unanswered questions and I'd like to know more about the shadow jumper world.

I received a free copy of Neverlove from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I always try to wait a day or so after reading a book to write a review because I like to see what I remember most about the storyline and the characters, the writing style etc because I feel as though it is going to be more honest rather then when I am totally caught up within the emotions of what happened.

From the first chapter I found myself totally drawn into the story and holding my breath waiting to see what was going to happen next and how the characters were going to deal with the situations they found themselves in. On the very first page you find yourself thrown in to a heartbreaking situation that you would never want anyone to go through. It is far from an easy scene to read but it gives us valuable insight into both the main character Abigail and of a secondary character.

Although there is an instant attraction between the main characters, it is far from a typical girl meets boy, they fall in love and have a happily ever after story. I could very easily write about all the challenges they face, but I don't want to spoil this book for anyone.

So often in paranormal romance I find that I have a pretty good chance of guessing what will happen next but this book really held my attention and just when I thought I might have it pretty well figured out there would be a twist that kept me guessing once again.

This book shows that no matter how awful and hopeless a situation might seem, with a little bit of courage, there is always hope. It might be far from easy and there might be a few setbacks but if you don't give up you will find the strength to be the person you can be.

I wouldn't recommend this book for younger readers due to the content/themes expressed within the first chapter in particular but for 15/16+ depending on maturity level. Some readers may find the first chapter rather confronting.

I tend to hold first-time authors in high esteem, especially those who take risks. Normally, I stay as far away from the paranormal genre as possible because there really isn't anything new under the sun. It seems each book is a pastiche (usally poorly executed) of others before it. However, NEVERLOVE was an amazing surprise and though it did adhere to some paranormal conventions, it was also far darker in tone and not full of sugar and fluff. I was actually thrilled at how good this book was. The concept of Shadow Jumpers is totally original.

Of course, it was the cover that sold me. Call me shallow if you want but I like seeing people of color front and center on a cover. I especially like it in genres in which we are strongly underrepresented as lead characters, such as paranormal and fantasy. The cover grabbed me, the story kept me. The writing was strong and could only get even better with the next book. Abigail and Basil were refreshingly flawed but sympathetic and their blossoming relationship didn't feel tossed in, though it could have used a little more time to develop considering Abigail's background. For the discerning YA paranormal reader, one cannot go wrong with this novel.

If I have one minor quibble it's that Abigail wasn't described thoroughly enough. The cover is a dead giveaway of course, but I would have liked to have had a little more meat in regards to what she looked like. After all, Basil was described pretty well.

4.5 stars!!!!

What a fantastic debut novel Ms. Brown has given us. She delivers well rounded characters you can relate to, and a plot that is clearly well thought out and highly developed. I particularly loved her blending of the paranormal with very real, very "human" problems. I can't wait for more from this talented author!

So I came across this book while I was searching goodreads for some new books. When I scrolled down, I saw that there was a giveaway. I entered never expecting to win; I normally just do not have that kind of luck. But I won. I do believe I squealed when my package arrived.

So I dove into the book as soon as I finished my current read. I was a little surprised what the first scene was. I knew something had to happen. I mean people need a final straw to decide to end it. But I wasn't expecting that. It had me a little hesitant to continue. But I promised an honest review and the story sounded interesting. I am glad I kept reading.

There are only a few death/devil/heaven/soul related YA books that I have read. Mainly because I have my own views and hate when people cross them. ((That is why I am so picky with my faerie and ghost books too.)) But this book wasn't like anything I have read before. While heaven and hell or good vs evil are not new concepts, I rather like the author's presentation of the harvesters and cleansers. It was kind of new to me so it was like reading something new, a fresh face so to speak. I enjoyed that.

I liked the characters. I will admit my mind wanted to turn Father Quanon, Jon, into an old, old man at first. Which made certain things interesting and humorous, to my weird mind, until I stopped thinking of him as such. But I think I enjoyed his struggle, his character arc the most out of the three of them. I liked the Little Red tie in too. Their tattoo weapons and power stuff was interesting and I have never read that elsewhere; creatures yes, but not weapons. And I grinned every time Basil introduced himself as "Basil, like the plant." I've know people like that in real life. I loved their bonding at starbucks scenes, they were both dorky cute.

So what didn't I like? It started off a tad slow. But I think that was just because of the world building, and well not much can happen until they are trained for their respective groups. The thing that bothered me the most comes down to one line. She died and came back thirty minutes later. Now it is such a stupid thing, but it brought me out of the story for a bit. Most people would have not clue and kept on reading, but my limited medical side took over and had to complain. Thirty minutes and she would be brain dead. No question about it. She'd be hooked up to tubes for the rest of her existence. I know the cleanser people healed her body and all that. The hospital never would have transferred her to a school. It's a silly thing to have an issue with, and totally -well sort of- not related to the story.

I enjoyed the paranormal aspect to this book, and I liked that the characters were messed up and had real problems. Neverlove kept my attention from page one. And I do believe the author is writing more. So will I continue reading the series? Yes.

A forbidden romance struggles to break its chains, giving a unique spin on the perception of the afterlife - Heaven and Hell.

Five stars - yes, I really liked this story that much. There are plenty of Reeper stories out there, but not with a twist like NEVERMORE. Its refreshing creativity broke the boundaries of a reeper's life, revealing a multi-faced glimpse into the invisible battle between good and evil. The religious references were accurate and any embellished upon were completely plausible. There was so much to like about this book, so much that made it unique, even the dark characters had a light side, a side that saw humor in the reality of life...or death.

Although I'd classify this as a romance, don't let that fool you. There was plenty of hidden pain and angst for both Abby and Basil to work through. What I enjoyed most about this aspect of the story was their inner demons were relative to the story as well as reality plucked from today's world. Abby had a deep and shameful scar that had to do with her family, while Basil had the typical young adult struggle of never measuring up to parental expectations.

The use of three separate point-of-views to tell this story was effective. It gave amazing insight into both character and storyline. Brown created an eerie veil with intriguing descriptions of souls, death, and life threads.

A hidden message ran through the entire story, one of second chances and redemption. That God is Merciful, always looking to help those who've survived and we should be the same, but justice must be present as well.

I'd recommend this book to any paranormal, romance, and young adult lover, but also to those intrigued by the afterlife and the workings of Heaven and Hell on our behalf.

Two young souls find themselves on the other side—one, helping lost souls make their way to the judgment seat and the other, stealing souls for the evil one. When their paths cross, they are drawn to each other, but how can their relationship survive if one is serving heaven and the other, hell?

PLAYERS:
Abigail Bishop: an abused spunky seventeen year old who gets a second chance at life and learns unique skills that help her combat the demons of hell.

Basil Hines: a wimpy young man seeking acceptance from his parents but is fighting an uphill battle. In an ironic twist, losing his life gives him the opportunity to stand on his feet and do what it takes to have what he desires most.

I LIKED: the fact that although both Abigail and Basil can be considered weak and beaten at the start of their story, they mature into courageous young people with a will to fight and survive.

The reader isn’t beaten over the head with the theme of right and wrong, but is aware of how the choices we make impact on our lives.

OVERALL COMMENTS: I don’t normally read in the paranormal genre, but the few books I’ve sampled so far have been good ones that encourage me to read more.

Abigail’s hardship is difficult to deal with and things do get worse before they get better. The pacing is good and the plot twists interesting. From the Shadow Jumpers notation, I know there are more books to come. I’ll definitely be looking out for those.

I received a free copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Abigail and Basil both have lives that are far from great. Abigail gets a chance to escape her miserable life and start a new one as an agent of heaven, while Basil makes a deal with the devil to get away from his. They both accept their new lives and are ready to commit fully to their duties. That is, until their paths and hearts cross…

We follow Abigail and Basil as they each start their new journey. From broken, fragile individuals they learn to deal with their new environments and as the story progresses they grow stronger and more confident. As their paths cross so do their hearts. It was maybe a bit too much an insta-love situation for my liking, but the (forbidden) romance is perfectly balanced with this fantastic world of Cleansers and Harvestors.

My first reaction after reading just the first two chapters of this book? WOW. The introduction of the characters is very powerful. Very real. The story takes a hold of you and doesn’t let go. Not really anyway. NEVERLOVE deals with some very real-life issues. It’s dark and has loads of twists and turns. And even if you already know how the story will end, the path leading there is very much unpredictable. This book wasn’t just about the romance. There’s a bigger story and a hidden message and I loved it.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves paranormal, YA and romance. Don’t let the cover put you off (I didn’t like it at all), because you’ll miss out on a solid, good story.

I really enjoyed Neverlove, though I must admit I was spoiled before reading it. Through some Goodreads pals I discovered that Ms. Brown originally introduced Abby and Basil in a blog opera!!

Find it here!

This work caused me to fall in LOVE with Ms. Brown's style of prose. I especially love the interaction between the characters in these blog entries.

Flash forward to Nevermore, the novelized version of this story.

Nevermore was an amazing read. The premise is chilling and exciting, and the emotional bombs waiting to go off are just...whew! The twists and turns will thrill you for sure.

So why not 5 stars? There was only one thing I felt could have made Nevermore a five star read; richer dialogue between Abby and Basil. I did not feel the same zing between them that is apparent in the blog entries. In fact much of what takes place as the relationship between the two develops is narrated in a few lines as it takes place "off-stage" so to speak. Granted, there is a lot of cerebral introspection in both characters that lead up to the inevitable, but I feel a tiny bit cheated.

The biggest draw for me in reading this novel was the amazing affection that grows between these two wounded souls, and I feel like I missed out.

Overall I found a lot to love about Neverlove, and the stage is set for more to come. I can hardly wait!

Neverlove is interesting. It's got the heaven/hell and good/evil dynamics in abundance, of course - it's a book about Cleansers, who guide souls to heaven, and Harvestors, who collect souls for the Devourer. Our two main characters end up in this world by a suicide attempt for one and a (surprisingly literal) deal with the devil for the other.

We're shown their lives as they integrate into their new lives. V'Salicus Academy, the school of silly names, is full of people just like Abby, that tried to take their lives and failed. If they'd succeeded, they would have gone to hell; there's no redemption for those who try to play god and decide their own fates.

Now, there is a lot of Christian morality in the book. Of course there is. It's about heaven and hell, there's going to be Christian elements. I enjoyed the book despite them being kind of heavy-handed at points. Say whatever you'd like, but I'm not a Christian and I don't want Christian morality stuffed down my throat while I'm trying to enjoy a book. That's where most of the star deduction comes in.

The rest is for Abby and Basil. They're special. The best of their respective kinds. Even though there are reasons for that, I still scoffed at it. Like, really. Can we get some main characters that aren't the most special people to ever exist? Please?

Abigail and Basil’s paths entwine again in a rush toward salvation in Angela Brown’s Neverlove.

Neverlove starts with a gut-wrenching and powerfully written bang. Broken and beaten, Abigail gets a new chance at life when her mother takes her to a special school. Seeking to get out of his overbearing mother’s control, Basil foolishly makes a deal with the devil. I enjoyed Basil much more than Abigail. Her character seems to grow too quickly, despite her intense struggles in the first few chapters. Basil’s character grows more naturally. I particularly enjoyed his interactions with Drakar, the devil, and his training partner, Pam.

The beginning really pulled me in, but the latter half of the middle toward the end sagged a little big. I was skimming here and there to get to the good parts. I liked Abigail and Basil’s budding yet forbidden relationship, but I wished to learn even more about the world they’ve both entered of Cleansers and Harvestors. I also would’ve loved to have seen more of Abigail’s training at V'Salicus Academy, but beyond that, Brown does a wonderful job balancing the horrors with touches of humor and love.

An emotionally charged novel, Neverlove by Angela Brown is an enjoyable read.

Abigail's future had never looked more bleak. So when she tries to end her life, she receives one thing she never expected: a chance at a good future. At V'Salicus Academy, she trains to be a servant of Heaven to help escort souls to Judgement. She still must deal with the pain of her past, but she meets a cute boy named Basil in a coffee shop and he makes her feel good again. The secrets keep building, and when everything explodes, Abigail must decide between duty and love.

Angela Brown hooks the reader with a powerful beginning and doesn't disappoint with several shocks at the end. It's a dark and emotional tale that makes your stomach twist and your heart hammer in your chest. Abagail begins at the bottom in the darkest depths of her own nightmares and claws her way back up. She's real, lovable, and admirable. I'm an even bigger fan of Basil. Smart, compassionate, and a bit of a geek. I love he's not the bad boy we typically see in YA books.

The plot takes the reader on several twists and turns. To dark places and sweet moments. The imagery is astounding. I could picture even the most horrific things in my head like a certain throne!

I can't wait to read more in this series and to learn more about the fascinating mythos.

When I began reading the first part of Angela Brown's Neverlove, I thought WOW...that's some powerful stuff. However disturbing it set the tone for the main character, Abigail (Abby). She's been marred by her father (of all people) and in return attempts to end her life. Fate intervenes, prompting her mother to save Abby and enrolling her in V'Salicus Academy. Like Abby, the Academy was an equally intense organization.

Since Abby is new, Father Quanon agrees to mentor her through the academy and many of his colleagues and superiors start to doubt his motives. The book at first weaves in and out, describing the lives of first Abby and then her love interest, Basil. I liked the dark worlds that Brown created, depicting the depth of hell with the sinister dealings of Devourer and then the intricate faculties of heaven. There were many times when I wondered how the MC's persevere. I want to tell you in the end love trumps all, but eh, eh, eh...that wouldn't be right, now would it?

If you like books with wicked characters, a ton of twists and a fine dose of romance, then NeverLove is just the book for you.

There’s a lot of reapers out there in the YA paranormal romance genre and I like them. Neverlove has a unique spin on what I’ve seen so far—WIN!

The story starts with a bang and keeps going right until the epic conclusion. The alternating points of view between the three main characters allowed me to see more of the bigger picture while also seeing both sides of the story. It was fascinating, thought-provoking, and educating all in one.

In this world, there is conflict between the Cleansers (a group who fight to save souls) and Harvestors (a group who consume souls for the devil). And love is a luxury that no Cleanser or Harvestor can afford.

But it’s so irresistible!

Chaos ensues as the characters struggle to maintain their values and ideals in the face of love. What’s most striking is the growth that the characters go through because of it.

Well done, Angela! Can’t wait to read more.

Angela Brown has created an absorbing tale of a seemingly doomed love affair between two teens who come from troubled family backgrounds and have been offered another chance at life (or afterlife). The problem is, they are working for very different masters. The characterisation was very strong in this book; I was rooting for these two as much as I was repulsed by others. Brown keeps the twists coming, making you read on to discover how things will turn out for Abby and Basil. Vivid description puts you right in the scene, especially in the appropriately horrific portrayal of hell. I'm really looking forward to reading more work from this author.

Wow. Just wow. There wasn't a dull moment to this page-turner. From the opening scene all the way to the end, Angela Brown had me. The world of Cleansers and Harvesters battling it out in the afterlife is an interesting and very believable premise. The author's flow of words is masterful and carried me away each time I opened my Kindle. The characters were believable and steady in their growth. They had their flaws which definitely earned my respect. Bravo for Angela Brown and Neverlove.

What a fantastic debut novel. The voice, the characterization, the plot are definitely worth pointing out. I enjoyed the paranormal site of the characters as well as the clever blend of the supernatural world and the very realistic, 21st century problems.

This book was received free of charge as part of a book tour (Share My Destiny Blog) for an honest review.

Neverlove by Angela Brown tells about the meeting between Abby, a Cleanser, and Basil, a Harvestor. Even though both are deeply in love with each other, love between Cleansers and Harvestors is strictly forbidden. They are eternal enemies. So their love won't stand a chance, right?

Abby can't be described as your usual protagonist. (It is interesting to have ethnically diverse people as main characters. That doesn’t seem to happen often), but the shocking fact about her is her relationship to her family. Her father abused her, since she was 12(when her brother died), and no one seems to believe her, not even her mother. So in the end she sees no other way out, than to attempt suicide.

Actually this happened all in the first chapter, so it's not a spoiler, but to me it seemed like a quite shocking way with a big impact to start a novel. I felt (still feel) totally sorry for poor Abby, who had to go through so many hardships already. Luckily her live becomes better(well, at least she is as far away from her father as possible!), when she survives and is brought to V'Salicus Academy, a school for people like her, who tried to kill themselves (Honestly it's kind of shocking, that there are enough people to fill a whole school). There she is supposed to find a way to be happy again and is trained to become a Cleanser.

In contrast to her Basil seems to be perfect. He is a little bit of an asian stereotype character, because his mother taught him to always be perfect and won't even accept a B on a test. Even though Basil is an excellent student, he is a social wreck.

When I first read about the whole academy setting, I thought it might be just that again: Another story, about a person, who is trained to do something in a academy. It could have turned out to be boring, since I'm a little tired of reading about a setting like that :( But Neverlove turned out to be something entirely different and refreshing. Actually the reader doesn't get a lot of information about the school itself (just the basic stuff) and the story almost never takes place inside the school.
My favourite place was probably a Starbucks, near the academy. There Abby and Basil meet for the first time and honestly, who doesn't love Starbucks :)?

The most shady character in this story is probably Father Quannon, a teacher and recruiter in V'Salicus Academy. He is not a bad person, but he gives off a vibe, that he won't be far off from becoming a bad guy. Through him we get to know a little bit about Abby's and Basil's past though. As it seems they were both Cleansers before, but were reincarnated. As to how and why, we don't get to know a lot. That's actually a little bit disappointing for me. I'm dying to get to know more about their past!! Hopefully light will be shed in the next novel.

Overall this was a great read! I loved how every character is kind of unusual. And actually the book was way too short :(. I started reading and suddenly it was already over again.. At least it felt like that! So I can't wait to read more about Abby and Basil. :)

My Book Boyfriend : Basil, who else? He is such a geek you can't help but love him. It sucks that he has issues with his parents. But hey, in his position come on who wouldn't, right? But he does let the who serves who get in the way of his love for Abigail.
Most Like Me or who I want to be: Strangely enough Abigail. First off Abigail is just a girl who is crushed. She masks her pain in her Goth appearance so full life yet so beaten down by what hand she was dealt. Though she did herself in, she found love, herself and is willing to risk everything for love. It's crazy I know, but it l question is their even a good v/s evil when love is on line?
Forever Young Recommendation Get off your bum and read the online start-up and don't for get to pick up a copy of NeverLove. You will not be disapointed!

I almost gave up on NeverLove after learning Abigail chose to end her life by committing suicide. It was almost too much coming after my own daughter has suffered and shattered into thousands of tiny fragments. In for a penny in for a pound, she wanted to read it so, I hung in and turns out I was thrilled I did and didn't hesitate before diving into NeverLove. If I were to grumble about anything it would be why hasn't Ms. Brown thought about publishing the online blog into kindle book for fast rabid fans like myself. I would gladly download a permanent copy to devour again at the drop of a hat.

Back on track, I was blindsided by different this read was and devoured it in one sitting. I just couldn't bring myself to turn off my kindle. You have Abigail, you average everyday run of the mill girl who is scarred from the traumatic abuse she encountered her whole like and at seventeen she pretty much saw no other option for a reprieve other than taking her own life. Then she is offered a second chance by helping other lost souls to judgment. It doesn't sound like much hope is offered here but it's where she meets Basil and to me where here true journey to discovering who she is and how strong she is begins.

Ms. Brown did an outstanding painting each of the character as real multi- dimensional. From beginning to end the story is written well, engaging and loaded with so many twists and turns you are sure not to be disappointed. Ms. Brown makes it easy for the reader take a journey their soon likely to forget. In addition, I was elated to read an African American lead. Yes, she might have had her issues but, who wouldn't after years of abuse. What held me gripping my kindle for dear life was the fact it seemed even the secrets had secrets.
