♥ ♥ ♥ !!!Asari/Shoui backstory!!! ♥ ♥ ♥

Shoui is the eldest son of the Mitou house, performing all the main kotodama functions until his younger brother Kotonha is old enough to take over; their remote and demanding father is the head of the house. Shoui is desperate to perform well and be released, even if into death; he longs for a kami-sama because he wants someone to notice him and take care of him. His assigned kami is the mischievous Asari, who resents Shoui because his previous master (Shoui's grandfather) Rikiichi died to save baby Shoui's life. But he can't resist the call, or Shoui's injuries.

THEY ARE SO MY FAVORITES. Unappreciated oldest son with grim sense of responsibility! Bitter grieving fey supernatural creature! They think it's just sex but it's love! So many of my kinks in one package! Plus fun reversals of uke/seme dynamics -- during their first sexual encounter, uke Asari tops in all aspects, including the literal, except for penetration.

Warning for dub-con.

"I have always always been praying in my heart... Always thinking...! If there was a Kami who truly belongs to me. If there was a Kami who only see me as most important...forever by my side, a Kami that only belongs to me... I won't mind killing or letting my life be bound by the Mitou Family. Only with that thought in mind I was able to endure... Only that thought was my support to live on... I thought that was my Kami... A Kami who only belongs to me. I always thought that." -- Shoui

"My days restricted... my fate decided. And in that, the one and only freedom allowed to me... was to love..." -- Shoui

Thanks to Shimizu-sensei. Finally a miracle happened here... after what happened with Himi & Genma...

The five star rating isn't just for this volume, but for this manga series in general. Ze is one of the best yaoi series I've read. There is real character development, the story is complex, and the mangaka makes you life an want to cry. You come to care for all the couples. So far, every couple "arc" has ended happily (or at least relatively so), but Asari and Shoui's story is heavy (as are Genma and Himi's, if you think about it). There is a lot of backstory in this series, and when we first meet Shoui and Asari, we are given one impression of them, but the backstory of relationship surprised me, particularly on Asari's end.

The artwork is beautiful, the story is amazing, and I can't stop thinking about this series. If you're a yaoi fan, and or if you enjoyed manga like Fruit's Basket of Loveless, then you have to read Ze.

"I thought I wanted to pass away, like the snow.
Disappear without leaving anything behind.
I'd thought I didn't have any,
feelings of leaving something behind.

—Until I knew your body."
