They call her the goddess of the sea— the one who decides who lives, who dies, and which ships never return.
I don’t believe in her. But belief won’t stop her wrath.
I’m Gypsy, daughter of Silverbeard, captain of the infamous Sly Serpents. My father rules through fear, his name alone enough to still the waters. But I’ve never followed orders well.
I gamble. I steal. I sleep with the enemy. And when I buy a cursed compass and set sail with it, I unknowingly spark a trial between mortals and gods.
Now fate has thrown me together with three unlikely allies—a bard, an outcast, and a man I should never have touched. We were never meant to share a ship, let alone a destiny. But the sea doesn’t care what we were meant for.
The compass points to something lost for a hundred years. The goddess demands blood. And if we don’t face her trials together, we’ll drown before we ever learn why she’s watching us.
Adventure. Betrayal. Steamy nights and storm-swept battles. The sea gives, the sea takes—and she always takes her due.
First Tide is the explosive beginning of Trials of the Sea, an adult pirate fantasy romance full of banter, found family, forbidden love, and gods that demand sacrifice.
If I were a quote, I’d probably fall somewhere between “Ars longa, vita brevis” and “I couldn’t help but wonder... was I addicted to the drama? Or was I just hopelessly romantic?” Ideally, something right in the middle—ambitious, a little chaotic, and deeply in my feelings.
I’m someone constantly caught between daydreaming, trying to improve at everything I do, and being mildly awkward (online and off). If you tell me you love my stories, I probably won’t know what to say—even though I’ll be absolutely thrilled inside.
Genre-wise, I go wherever inspiration takes me: Reverse Harem, dark romance, horror, standalones, series—I love exploring it all. If it makes me feel something, I want to write it.
So maybe, just maybe, there’s a story on my backlist with your name on it. And if it’s not there yet, chances are it’s brewing in my head.

“I do what a captain ought to.” “Which is what?” I half-smirk, feeling the words pull up from somewhere deep and worn. “I remind them I’ll keep them alive, no matter the cost. Steady the ship, hold it through hell if that’s what it takes. But it’s more than that—I make damn sure they know we’re all bound to the same fate. Every drop of sweat, every muscle strain. We fight as one, or we go down as one.” — Rating: 3.75✨ Smut: 🌶️ — First Tide is the first book in an exciting new pirate romantasy series. It follows Gypsy Flint who is as wild as the sea and refuses to bend to anyone, not even the goddess of the sea. Gypsy will stop at nothing to land herself a pirate crew and her efforts lead her on a dangerous journey with three other men.
First, Pen Mucching writes female main characters like no other. Gypsy was fierce and independent and I loved every single thing about her. And the MMC Zayan? His grovelling and the way he loves Gypsey were oh so good 🥵 Beyond the two main characters, we also have Vinicola the bard & Fabien who comes in a little later. Vinicola provides the much needed comedic relief throughout the book and his character is so loveable. Fabien on the other hand is the perfect brooding man with a tragic past. When we get to his love story, I will definitely go feral.
Beyond the characters, I loved the myths & tales of the sea and the Lady. I’m nothing if not a sucker for different iterations of faith in books.
While I really loved a lot of aspects of this book, as the series opener, there were understandably some plot points that were unresolved or not as developed as I wanted them to be because we could only see so much in one book. I personally wanted a bit more development though, especially towards the end where I found the trials felt anticlimactic after the characters’ journeys. Lastly, I sometimes struggled to keep up with the details of the world & characters😅 I think it will become clearer with the next books in the series, however!
Overall, this was a great read to introduce me to this romance subgenre and I absolutely can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I’m also veryyyyy curious to see the love interests of Vini & Fabien👀

Just finished reading an advanced copy of a book called, First Tide. This was a pirate fantasy full of adventure, romance, sword fights, friendship, trials, magic, and fighting for their lives. This is about Gypsy, the daughter of one of the most ruthless pirates. She fears nothing and no one, not even the sea goddess, because despite the tales and legends, she believes the sea goddess isn't real. But when she buys a cursed compass, she is forced with an ultimatum, then has to find her way and set sail for the adventure of a lifetime (and assembles her own makeshift crew along the way). I absolutely loved every minute of this story, it was so so good! It had me on the edge of my seat, I was totally captivated, and I felt like I was part of the story experiencing it all with the characters. I loved getting chapters throughout the book by each of the 4 main characters, getting their points of view and thoughts throughout the story really brought everything to life! I am so excited for book 2! I don't want to leave this world and these characters, I need the next book asap! ⚓💜📚
Thank you to the author and to the publisher for this ARC of First Tide, in exchange for an honest review.
I have to say I REALLY liked this book. It’s about a female pirate named Gypsy who doesn’t believe in the legends of the feared sea goddess. She has an awesome crew of characters that join her on a journey that basically forces her to acknowledge that some of the old sea shanty’s may have some truth behind them after all. This book is multiple POV’s which I LOVE! It has trials, magic, legends, and some spice as well. I did not expect the intricate details of this story and I’m dying to see what some of the these little nuggets of information truly means for the fate of our crew. I absolutely loved the character of Vini, with his quirky personality and I am really interested to see the character development to come for Fabian. I cannot wait for the second book to come out!
-I really loved this book. There was so much going on and it all went along quite smoothly. Nothing felt too much out of place and the plot was very intriguing. The beginning came as quite a surprise but then the context comes in and it really brings a promising start to a long book. There were moments I felt were a bit unnecessary seeing the length of the book but then again, everything was very fun to read. Would have also loved to see a bit more world building but we still get a good idea with what we have quite early on.
-I absolutely loved Gypsy. She’s such a fun pirate character and then we have Zayan who was also great. I’m not that big a fan of how their relationship started, I wish it was a bit different without changing the nature of their enemies with benefits type relationship. Also wouldn’t have minded a bit less sexual interactions between the two even though I know that’s how their relationship started off as. It still makes sense so I’m not too mad about it. The other characters were great. I loved Vinicola, he might be my favourite.
-I am definitely anticipating the sequel. No release date yet but I will be looking out for it. So much was happening at the end that I sometimes didn’t where it was heading and how we got to certain situations but the contexte made it make sense in a way. I can’t wait to discover more about the trails and see more of these character together trying to solve them as they escape a second fleet of pirates.
First Tide is a captivating entry into the fantasy genre, offering a fresh perspective on pirate adventures. The narrative centers on Gypsy, a defiant pirate who dismisses the legends of the sea goddess—a skepticism that propels her into unforeseen trials. Alongside her are compelling characters like Zayan, Vinicola, and later, Fabien, each contributing unique viewpoints that enrich the story.
Vinicola, in particular, stands out with his witty and poetic demeanor, reminiscent of Jaskier from “The Witcher.” His charm and humor add depth to the tale, making him a memorable favorite.
While the story’s beginning may require some patience, persistence is rewarded as the plot unfolds into an intriguing, dynamic, and breathtaking adventure. The multiple perspectives provide a comprehensive understanding of the world and its characters, enhancing the reader’s engagement.
For an immersive reading experience, pairing the book with ambient pirate ship sounds can enhance the atmosphere, making it even more enjoyable.
In summary, First Tide is a compelling read that breathes new life into pirate fantasy, with well-crafted characters and a gripping plot that keeps you hooked until the very end.
If you want swash buckling, brilliant character byilding, angst, plenty of emotions, fear, and a whole lot of spice. This is for you!
Zayan and Gyspy. Opposite sides, like a pirate version of Romeo and Juliet. "Never fall for a wild girl boy"
I absolutely love the brassness of Gypsy. the way she will do whatever she can to make a name for herself and not for being her fathers daughter. Her relationship with Zayan is swoon worthy. Full of danger! I love the adventure they're on to find themselves and each other.
Zayan is completely enamoured by Gypsy! The bard, Vinicola, is hilarious. The deep, meaningful conversations really pulled the book together. Miss Gypsy Flint was wild and intense, chasing her freedom with her two crew mates. Watching the characters grow more and more has been a pleasure. I've really enjoyed Vini. Phew! What a wild ride! The burn sure is slow! But when it hits, it hits! Hard amd fast and plenty of it!🥵 I enjoyed getting to know Fabien and Ridley.
What the foursome have to do just for the first trial is absolutely brutal. As for Trial One? Nah, I'm out! 😅

This book tells the captivating tale of Gypsy and her journey. She is skeptical of the sea goddess's stories and looks down on those who believe in them, even her adopted father. But when she comes into possession of a cursed compass, she sets sail on a thrilling adventure filled with found family, magic, trials, and a hint of spice. And let me tell you, the ending leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat! Can't wait for book 2!
I have to admit, I struggled a bit to get into this book at first. But once I did, I was completely hooked. It gave me serious The Ever King vibes, which is probably why I was drawn to it in the first place. The characters were so well-developed and I loved following their journey throughout the story. Trust me, this book is a must-read for anyone looking for a thrilling and magical adventure!
What’s not to love? An angry Sea Goddess causes an unlikely Pirate crew to assemble to complete magical trials by using cursed objects and solving riddles to survive with a dash of spice and the following tropes:
•Found Family •Rivals - Forbidden Romance •Love-Hate •He falls first
The story is told from multiple points of view alternating by chapter which is titled by character.
Vinicola a poet/musician who is seemly the weakest link in the assembled crew, is a character I grew to love the most with his intellect and witty banter.
I was hooked from the start with this book and had a hard time putting it down. I never knew I needed a pirate romantasy in my life and now I cannot wait for the next book.
This is a pirate romance fantasy. The book is told from multiple points of view. The book does have a lot of action, adventure, mystery to uncover, and spicy scenes. Gypsy is the strong female captain. There are 3 male companions that get pulled into this journey with Gypsy. It all starts with a cursed compass. The book is very long though at 656 pages. There are 4 books planned in this series. This book does end in a cliffhanger. I feel like this book, even though it was so long, just touched the tip of the iceberg. There is still so much still left unanswered in this book.

I love the fresh take this book had for me! It was a medium to fast pace, and took me on turns I never would have seen coming! This was fresh in so many ways. Fresh take on survival trials, fresh take on enemies to lovers, fresh take on multiple POV. New characters aren't just introduced, you get to go inside their head!
Mucching is building a world I absolutely want to keep exploring! My one problem with this book; it is the first of the series, and its incomplete! (Downside to an ARC, I suppose. 🤣)
“I don’t want to be the woman who bleeds, the one who feels too much. I need to be fierce, untouchable.”
“First Tide,” by Pen Mucching
This was a good, well written book but just not for me. I thought it was way longer than it needed to be. I really liked it at first, but I have a personal hatred towards riddles, and this book has a lot, and it ended up being a huge part after the first 25% of the book, so it just wasn’t really my thing. 3 out of 5 stars.
I was lucky enough to receive an early copy to read. I really enjoyed this book. It was a really fun novel about a female pirate. There is SO much that happens in this book, but it is done so well and easy to follow throughout. For being an early novel by this author, she has really honed her craft well. This was so fun to read! The relationship was done well as well and I really thought that this novel left off at a good point that made me interested in reading the sequel when it comes out. If you like pirate books then I would definitely suggest picking this up!
So let me start off by saying that Vini is the best character in the book. Hands down.
Now with that being said:
Gypsy was annoying. I almost didn't finish it because I really really didn't like her. Unless she was interacting with Vini where she actually becomes a semi decent character.
The story is what made me keep going. I did love the story itself, I loved the idea of the book and did find it enjoyable overall, which is why I rated it the way I did.
I would recommend it to someone wanting a pirate book but I wouldn't read it again myself.
This was a strong start to the Trials Of The Sea series, it had that feel that I was looking for and enjoyed in a fantasy pirate novel. The characters were everything that I was expecting and enjoyed the overall feel of the characters and universe. It worked well in the fantasy romance genre and enjoyed the pirate concept. Pen Mucching has a strong writing style and was invested in what was going on, I'm excited to read more in this series.

I absolutely loved this book! I’ve never read a book about pirates, but let me tell you it was awesome! I loved the riddle aspect of the book, because I really enjoy stuff like that. The characters were very likable and there was a bard which gave me “The Witcher” vibes and I thought he was humorous. I’m so excited for another book to come out in this series and can’t wait to see what happens to the characters next.
Absolutely loved this book. Ended in a cliffhanger so I’ll be eagerly awaiting book 2. I have never read anything strictly based on pirates as main characters and I quite liked it as a change to my normal TBR list. A strong FMC, complex supporting characters and a mystery to solve makes this a real page turner!
OMG what an adventure! While it is a long read, it’s worth every minute. The story sucks you in and keeps you guessing every second of the way. I cannot wait for next book in the series! Luckily the ending wasn’t too bad of a cliffhanger or else I couldn’t stand the wait. But this book and the story it’s telling is absolutely incredible!
There is just one issue with this novel, and that is the fact that it is part of a series and ends on a cliffhanger.
Gaaah! The second and third and fourth book cannot be published too soon. I usually know better than to start with an incomplete seties, but THAT BLURB …!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I really tried to get through this at least three times but just couldn't do it. It starts off hot and then just goes off in tangents. It was extremely hard to figure out what the main goal/plot of the book was. From my interpretation this is supposed to have a strong independent woman feel to it, but it just gets messy.
Now I know almost 700 pages feels long, but I promise this book never let's you down. I felt like it was a good pace and I loved the characters. Gypsy was such a fun character and I absolutely fell in love with her character. She brings so much to the story and I loved her crew just as much. I'm a sucker for multiple POV and a good pirate story. Book 2 can't come fast enough
This book starts off fantastic it pulls you in. But the further in you get the more confused I got. My brain does not work well enough to do or figure out riddles. Even with that said it was still written well. Just not something for me.

There is a lot happen in this book and to these characters! I do love the main characters, how they are so different but also how they are meshing together. This book is definitely action-packed. I just can't get over everything they had to get through to even get to the trials. I look forward to book two.
This epic book has everything. It has fantasy, romance, humor, characters that made you feel all the feels and then some. I’m so glad this is a series and also quite peeved because that end…got me hooked though! If you liked The Ever King or The Devil in the Deep Blue Sea duology…you’re going to love this!
What a magical read! The pirate's and sword fighting were amazing! The romance was swoon worthy! I can't wait for the next book to come out. This book does end on a cliff hanger, but it is so worth the read!
I loved the writting style of this book, it flowed effortlessly. I really enjoyed the characters and their relationships in this book. I love a pirate book and this did not dissapoint! Also I was shocked to get a new POV at 40% but I loved the character.
Literally just finished this one and my question is: how long do we have to wait for the next book???
Besides Peter Pan stories this is the 2nd pirate based book I've read and I have to say - I'm really loving them!!!!
This a slowburn but kept me intrigued the whole time! Chapters are looooong, however I don't feel they dragged on AT ALL!! The way Pen wrote the character's thoughts, feelings, and inner dialogue between conversations was amazing. Really helped me know the characters and come to love them.
Pick a favorite? Please! I honestly loved each of them. I have come to enjoy multi-person POV and this book didn't disappoint with that at all!!
And the poetry, riddles, quests - amazing!
Thank you for this amazing read! I'll definitely be watching for all future novels! 💞👏
