Rate this book

Is this book Harry Potter fanfiction?
We have:
* A castle that moves and changes
* Paintings on the castle walls that whisper
* A house sorting ceremony that places students into one of four houses
* Enchanted candles that float above the students in the main hall
* A spooky forest
* A “quest” to find a chalice at the center of a maze, which “is a magical construct that shifts and changes. It’s designed to test your physical abilities, your mental fortitude and teamwork as well.” Are we surprised that said chalice actually teleports them?
* The Order the Crimson Shadow, dubbed The Order, is a group of supernatural beings who maintain balance in the supernatural world.
* Really stereotypical names (e.g. Corvus Sanguine is a vampire, Zephyr Nightshade is a dark fae, Ignatius Emberkin is an elementalist—I’ll let you guess what element he wields, Zaiah Wishmaster is a djinn/genie)

—————————

Some reactions and notes (includes vague spoilers):

The first sex scene is weird. What submissive just automatically decides “this person is my dominant” and starts calling them Mistress unprovoked or saying “make me cum like a good boy?” Homie was playing both roles, and it was strange.

Also, what’s up with this non-consensual bonding? Feels like supernatural sexual assault. Context: aforementioned submissive placed a bond on the FMC, Adelaide, without her knowledge allowing it to grow to the point where it becomes painful to be apart and still hasn’t mentioned it.

More supernatural sexual assault:
Smiling at her, I pull a small compulsion over her. Not enough so she can still be able to tell me to go to hell, but also enough to take the edge off her inhibition.

This is in relation to her letting him eat her out while on her period. What the fuckkkkk

”See you tonight,” I murmur, knowing it’s time to leave now before I drag her to her bed and nail her to it with my cock whether she wants it or not.

WHAT THE FUCKKK

She gulps. “I did that without your consent,” she murmurs. “I, of all people, should know better than that. Can you forgive me?”

Look at her, caring about consent when no one cares about hers.

And before I get useless yap in the comments about “did you read the trigger warnings?” Yeah bro, I clicked the link to contribute to boost her SEO and analytics since the trigger warnings are not listed in the book in hopes that you’ll browse her website and buy more shit. The trigger warnings were self harm, compulsion, abduction, and mild violence. Now why the fuck wasn’t sexual assault or fuck even DUBIOUS CONSENT listed? Sorry I’m not a vampire myself so compulsion isn’t a term I use in my vocabulary for magically coercing someone into sexual acts.

What to expect:
- Spice 2/5 🌶️
- Academy setting
- Secret world
- Multi species world
- Reverse harem (4 men)
- Betrayals

My thoughts:
Y’all I was so close to dnfing this book in the beginning, but I stuck it out and continued. Which I’m glad I did so. This book took a bit for me to get into. I didn’t love the writing style and found it super cringy but thankfully it got better. Around 30% was where it really started to pick up, the guys came into the picture and helped move along the semi-non existent plot. Which brings me to the highlight of this book, the guys. Ugh wow, they were amazing 🤩 especially in the bedroom 😏 they brought some much needed tension and spice to the book. Each of them are a different species, making the story interesting. The only thing that bothered me was the constant talking about “something bad” that was going to happen. All of the guys described having a bad feeling about the future, and it gets super annoying. Like yeah I understand the author wants to foreshadow but this was overkill.

Finally my last qualm is with the plot, arguably the most important part of the story, which begs the question, where was it? Throughout the majority of this book I found myself asking that question. You’d think it would be centered around the academy right? Nope. I quite honestly don’t know why there was even an academy in the first place, like the characters barely even went to classes. The first 80% of the book was the week leading up to the start of school. Though there were some weird trial things that took place. As someone who very much enjoys an academic setting this was a disappointment.

Alright forcing myself to stop ranting. 🙃

I will be reading the next book only because one of the guys has a sub kink 😝

DNF 27% - Audiobook

Something about the writing style isn’t doing it for me. The guys also come off as creeps from the very beginning and it isn’t sexy. The FMC gave off naive to the point of being TSTL. I love reading about damsels in destress. This one was not one of them.

This is actually the second time I’ve picked this up. The first time was as an ebook, which was quickly put to the side by like Chapter 3. It seems like I just don’t vibe with this authors writing and that’s ok.

It started off promising but got very corny very quickly. The guys’ draw to her was insincere and more unnerving than endearing.

I also don’t know how there is expected to be an incentive to read all three intended books when the physical connections went from being touch averse to balls deep halfway through the first one, completely circumventing the necessary yearning period needed for character development.

This would be fine if this book was where the story ended, but even then, it takes away from the reader’s immersion in the act beyond a clinically detached appreciation without the established chemistry.

The spice scenes were also just as rushed as the author seemed to be to incorporate them. Like if they didn’t all have sex immediately, we’d die, but she just ended up murdering her own story.

I recommend Variant Lost by Kaydence Snow instead. It’s a very similar premise, executed memorably better.

🎶 "But what would you do if I went to touch you now? What would you do if they never found us out?”

When her absentee father returns to reveal the truth about her heritage, Adelaide’s (h) world is thrown into chaos. She’s not just human—she’s half blood sucker, and the discovery of her true nature sends her on a path she never expected. Her only chance at understanding this new reality is to attend MistHallow University, a secret paranormal academy hidden deep within England’s misty forests. It specializes in training beings like her, as well as those whose default setting is pure, unbridled trouble.

─── ・ 。゚☆: THOUGHTS*.☽ .*:☆゚゚───

“Vespers are incredibly rare, Adelaide,” Randall interjects on her behalf. “You have abilities that some full-blooded vampires can only dream of. There are factions in our world who would stop at nothing to control you, to harness your power for their own ends.”

“Powers? What powers? I’m just a normal girl. Well, a normal girl with some serious issues, but still.”

I know this is the first book in the series, and it’s still developing in terms of plot and romance, but I don’t think I’m willing to wait it out and continue to the next book to see if it gets better. The first book just didn’t entice me enough to want to know what happens next, despite the whole Crimson Shadow plot and the possibility of her having a more chaotic version of herself inside. I just don’t see how that alone is enough to pull me in and make me want to keep going. The idea of her learning about her powers could be interesting, but I feel like the dialogue and pacing weren’t consistent enough to make me intrigued. It just didn’t click. The romance with the men in the harem didn’t feel compelling to me either It all happened so suddenly. They instantly connected with her, which I get is part of the bond, but it felt rushed. I understand the idea of the bond pulling them together, but I just needed more character development and interaction between them before any real connection was established. If I’m being honest, the only character we got any real development with was Corvus. With the others, it felt like we didn’t get to know them at all.

“Something strange happened,” he explains slowly. “She was in pain, bleeding from her eyes. She said it felt like there was someone else inside her, trying to take control.”

“Another presence? Did you recognise it, Adelaide?”

“No, and yes. It was me. It was another me.”

Corvus, Zephyr, Zaiah, and Ignatius were all part of the story, but none of them made any real impact. It’s concerning when there are so many male characters and none of them really stand out. I could tell you a few things that happened when they interacted with her, but none of those moments were memorable or meaningful to me. The whole thing with Corvus and being upset about being the captain of the house felt off, especially since she had just gotten there and was still learning how to use her powers. It just felt like drama for the sake of drama, and I didn’t buy it. Then there’s the whole thing where she starts calling Ignatius “Iggy” after barely knowing him. That just didn’t feel natural. It’s like, they’ve known each other for what, a few days at best? But suddenly, she’s using a nickname like they’ve been friends for years. It was just too forced, and it made the connection feel shallow. Honestly, the way everything unfolded didn’t make sense to me. The connections felt underdeveloped, and I wasn’t emotionally invested in any of the characters or their relationships. I genuinely wanted to like this book, but I just couldn’t get into it. I still like the main character (I want to like her), but the romance and the dynamics with the men just didn’t do it for me.

─── ・ 。゚☆: OVERALL*.☽ .*:☆゚───

I’m not going to continue the series. I’ll just have to let it go for now.

The writing is just very amateur and cringy.
Repetitive vocabulary words. My eyes rolled the entire book. Absolutely zero depth - to the characters and the plot. No meaningful interactions between characters before “I’m falling for her” before sex. Creating a bond for no reason?

The school name is obnoxious - just make it two words if you are going to capitalize on the middle it looks like an insta handle

At points it felt like it was a poorly written essay?
Honestly I hated it despite liking the premise and desperately hoping it would get better once the author finished the exposition.

Our FMC Addy grows up thinking she's just a regular human until she's 21 and visited by her Vampire dad who hadn't been in the picture...despite wanting to be.
Her mother wanted her to grow up safe and "normal."
There's some mental health rep involved, check your tws.
In this series being half human, half vampire, is extremely rare and they're known to be exceptionally powerful.
So she gets sent to a hidden Paranormal Academy for adult supernaturals to hone their craft. Like a Supernatural College.
This book was definitely giving Harry Potter vibes with the magic classes, house choices, and deadly trials, but if it was for every kind of Supernatural being and at College age.
There's 4 love interests who give off those bully vibes, at first but lats like two seconds before they're obsessed and overprotective.
Although she does need the protection since someone is out to get her.
I was completely sucked in the whole time! I've already started the next one and I can't wait to see how everything turns out!
This has fast/medium burn spice in it that gets pretty steamy.

Crimson Shadows was alright at best.
Repetitive, boring, and underwhelming at worst. I ended up just skimming the last 20 something pages because I couldn't be bothered with actually reading it. It felt like an amalgamation of other fantasy/romance/RH novels and wasn't trying to do anything unique or different.
I will not be continuing the series.

I really liked the beginning of the book. The FMC seemed cool. The school gave off hogwarts vibes, and I loved it, but the world building wasn't what I was hoping. It felt veigue. Once she got to the school, it just went downhill for me. The relationship between her guys was pretty much insta, and I am not a fan of that. They were all set to maybe scare her and make her uncomfortable to get to know her secrets, but then they either just know what she is or she just tells them even though it is supposed to be a secret. Adelaide was way too flippant for someone who lived as a human her whole life, and in a day of finding out what she is, she just accepts it, and she really has no reservations. Just took me out of the story.

I knew I was going to love this story when I saw it posted by the author. I have been waiting for a great masterpiece like this one. This is hands down the best paranormal story I have read in a long time. I wasn't expecting the twist and turns through out this book. I loved the dark, the light and all the grey in-between. Adelaide is naïve, stubborn and a strong woman. She goes through so much and still has a bleeding heart. She has become my favorite FMC so far. Her wit and smart mouth is hilarious. Corvus, HOTTT as sin! His growth as a person is inspiring. I loved seeing different personas from him. He is a strong MMC and I love him! Zephyr is my favorite, he is a definite shadow daddy, I love his possessiveness, strong wit, and his authority is panty melting. Zaiah is hilarious and gives off a dark and steamy Genie vibe that is addicting. Ignatius is one hot firestarter (I needed a fan when he walked into the room.) He is a mysterious and wild character that I couldn't get enough of.

I would love to see more of Wren and know her story. She deserves some love and maybe her own harem that will cherish her!

I highly recommend this book. If you love twist and turns with a lot of darkness surrounding the edges and 4 hot as sin morally grey men and 1 strong naïve female that has a brain and hilarious banter than this is the tale for you!

seriously?! hold onto your seat!

This story is amazing!! This story had me from the first words and I’m hooked! The characters, the plot, the twists and turns! Seriously the cliff hanger at the end of this first book I did NOT see coming even from a mile away! Let’s talk about Addy - I just love her witty banter and she takes no nonsense from anyone as she learns to navigate her new life and the guys who quickly fall for her and realize she is something special yet strong they are swoon worthy. I can’t wait for the next book but I will because Eve has knocked it out of the park. Get yourself a copy and read it now!!

My flaming word was this a bloody great start to this start to this series. Adelaide (FMC) gets thrown into the deepend when she finds out both who/what she is and it lands her in a Supernatural World. One that she is ill prepared for but one that she navigates with plenty of sharp wit and sarcasm. Add into that mix Vampire - Corvus, Dark Fae - Zephyr, Djinn - Zaiah and Fire Elemental - Ignatius. Who brought on the steam. The plot twists were brilliant and so was the cliffhanger ending. Bring on book 2 now.

Meh. A very formulaic paranormal academy why choose. Girl finds out she’s supernatural and must attend an academy to learn and control her new abilities. The four strongest men at the school are instantly intrigued with her. I’ve been here before. I don’t mind formulaic or predictable but my issue is I don’t really like any of the characters. Particularly the FMC. She is all over the place. Introverted and just wanting to keep to herself and belong then she is giggling ALL THE TIME and bummed because she didn’t make house captain. I might dip my toe into the next book just to see but I’m not holding out much hope.

Finds out she’s a vampire and gets sent to an academy. Sadly DNF. The writing didn’t suit me.

There was way too much swearing. Now, I’m not against cursing. It can be quite entertaining and fun but imo it needs to be used with intention and have a purpose. It becomes meaningless when it’s used so frequently.

I was confused by the FMCs reactions to things. I remember it saying something like she jolted in anticipation or nerves and I was like was idk if that would elicit a jolting strong response. I was taken out of the story another time when it said she winced. I pictured her wincing, which is a physical description, and I was like wait what’s she wincing about? Oh, would someone wince about this? It sound nit picky but I don’t know exactly how to put it. The way it was written I couldn’t immerse myself in the story.

Adelaide has awoken as a vampire human hybrid on her birthday and her father a vampire has swooped in to send her to a supernatural school. She learns that there are hunters and other supernaturals who would want to kill or own her for her powers. She meets Corvus, a vampire prince who can turn into a bat, Zephyr, a dark fae prince, Zaiah, a djinn, and Ignatius, a fire elemental. She starts to fall for each of the guys and they her. She trains with professor blackthorn who tells her to keep her heritage a secret. The guys all figure out what she is and so do others do I’m not sure how well kept a secret it was. After sleeping with Corvus she starts bleeding from her eyes and fights against an alter ego trying to take control. She goes outside to try and collect herself, where strix show up to capture her and she wakes up chained to a pentagram. Professor Blackthorn and her father are fighting and she finally sees her father has won and she waits for him to unchain her, only he stabs her in the chest.

Adelaide always felt different from everyone else. She accepted it but it wasn't until her father who she has never had a relationship with informs her she is half vampire and a rare creature that things begin to click into place. Sent to MistHallow University, a place for supernatural's to hone their powers. Adelaide is focused on learning more about her heritage and what she is capable of. She doesn't plan on Zephyr, Corvus, Ignatius and Zaiah. All different in what they can do and all vowing to protect her when it becomes clear someone is after Adelaide.

I definitely was pulled in but there is one part in the book I thought was not necessary and was the only thing I didn't really care for in the book. Had a great premise, liked the way everything unfolded and am going to have to get into the next book quick as this had a cliffhanger.

I knew from the start this was going to be the book that has its claws stuck deep inside my heart. Adelaide our heroine and half vamp and her hot hunky four men is a story that is beyond amazing. The banter between them is phenomenal and the twist and turns, lord how they kept me on my toes.
I haven’t read an all consuming PR RH this year like this and I sorely needed this.
If you like strong willed men, and a woman who can banter like nothing else along with an amazing plot then this is just for you. I can’t wait to complete this series

It seems that I finally found a reverse harem series that has me interested in continuing it.

Although I can't justify or excuse some of the actions that the MMC's commited, the story was really interesting and full of twists.

DNF - 80% and i just can’t force myself to finish this. The plot is weak. The world building is weak. The characters are…. Weak. I just don’t love these people. They could get eaten by a dragon and i wouldn’t care. I definitely don’t want to hear about her tampons. I think the author tries to get an emotional response from the reader but fails.

DNF @45%

Nearly half way in and academy classes haven't even started yet.

What has started is lots of longing looks, internal monologing of how attractive/ witty/ interesting the FMC is by the guys, how attractive but scary/ dangerous/ interesting the guys are by the FMC, manufactured drama for no reason, the FMC continously thinking about how she's never fit in anywhere and now, here, she could, but maybe not, but maybe...

I got bored and annoyed.
