Beatitude: A Depraved Muses Department Novella

Rate this book
I was consumed by a twisted desire to watch the light drain from her eyes. But instead, it was my own soul that was devoured by the darkness within her gaze.

This world was never meant for me - a shadowed figure wandering, fueled by carnal desires until I am destined for hell. And I embrace it wholeheartedly. But then she came into the picture after my successful hunt at a local coffee shop. She offered me a simple act of kindness, and in that moment, I was consumed by her. My obsession with Everly knows no bounds, and there is no escape. Her fate is to become one with me, bound by darkness and consumed by our twisted desires.

Choosing the safe, sensible path has always eluded me. I have a knack for finding trouble, and it seems like I've stumbled upon more than I can handle with Ronan. He's undeniably attractive and thrilling, but he's also dangerous and everything a mother would warn her daughter to stay away from. To make matters worse, he's a serial killer who seems to have set his sights on making me his next victim. But here's the thing - I'm drawn to him and the danger he represents. I want to play his game, to push him to his limits as he pushes me to mine, until we both are consumed by one another.

It's depraved, it's warped, it's immoral.
But in this moment, running from the man who may end up being my killer, I've never felt more alive.

3.5 ✨️✨️✨️

I'll always be a fan of DJs books, I think I read almost everything she has published, and this one is one of her darkest writings until now.

This author often touches sensible and difficult, traumatic subjects in her books, but this novella was a full-on triggers fiesta. 🫣 So proceed carefully!

I think it would have worked better with a little bit more details here and there, like how the f*ck she end up with that cr33p in the trucker? Or the scene where that other guy came to the hotel room ... how did she manage to pull something like that off ? She didn't have a phone, so how!? It was quite a confusing scene.

The end seemed very rushed. Especially because I just couldn't understand why the h took so many weird decisions in general and just put her life in danger 😭. But you know what, hell yeah, for their HEA.

Did it keep me glued to my Kindle? It sure did.

I'm curious to see how much darker this author will go with the next books.

First of all, thank you to D.J. Krimmer for this incredible ARC, which I am OBSESSED with.

WOW, WOW! I didn’t expect this to be so good, but right from the start, I was already fascinated, both by the writing – which is simply perfect – and by Ronan, the protagonist, who has always been a bit wild.

Ronan and Everly are two of the most fascinating characters I’ve ever met, and it was so much fun reading the dynamics of this couple that I just didn’t want this book to end at all. If it had 500 pages, I wouldn’t complain; on the contrary, I would thank the author for it.

I’m already recommending it to all my friends because I know they’ll love it! But I must warn you, this isn’t for everyone. The characters, especially Ronan, are intense, which makes the couple’s relationship even more intense. Some questionable things happen between the two, so if that’s not your thing, it might not be for you. But if you enjoy that, read this book immediately!

Finally, I think I’ve never read a novella as good as this one. It’s definitely become my favorite.

ALC AUDIOBOOK REVIEW:

Beatitude
By: @djkrimmer

Narrated by:
@mariehawkinsnarrator and @therealjoearden

Wow! This book! I don’t believe I have read anything like it, it’s unhinged, toxic, chaotic, and I couldn’t stop! Check your trigger warnings before diving in. I have been on a DJ KRIMMER kick this past year and of course when this one became available I had to check it out, with Marie Hawkins and Joe Arden narrating I knew it would be worth the craziness and I was right. This is a short novella and I listened in one setting, absolutely captured by it.
Beatitude is a wild, crazy, ride and Joe’s voice as Rowan just consumed all of those emotions with his dark raspy legit pshycotic tones with the side of crazed laugh that just made you realize this guy has been through the worst of it, and totally nuts, but you still love him. And Marie’s voice as Everly is confident and crazy. Dark, grumpy sexual all with a side of bizarre sweet lust. A darker rasp with tones of defeat but also knowing she’s been through it and only trying to make it. With the duet narration you couldn’t help but feel the emotions of these two feeding off of each other and knowing the bond they have will only better the outcome for Rowan and Everly.

Thank You @bluenoseaudio for the opportunity to listen and review.

🛑Beatitude is a very dark, toxic romance. The characters are morally black, toxic and are not a depiction of a healthy relationship. If you are coming into this hoping to find a redeeming quality in the MMC - you won’t. He is a serial killer, a psychopath who has severe untreated mental illnesses. Please make sure you read over the trigger and content warnings before going into this.

⚠️ PLEASE check TRIGGER & CONTENT WARNINGS for BEATITUDE before reading.

4.5 ⭐️ 3.5 🌶️ (but it was good)

🥵 well Idk like I ate this up, I needed a quick mood read to break up the Fantasy I was reading and it did the trick. It was wild, definitely DARK.. like dark, not the darkest Ive read but its up there. Definitely a morally black MMC like straight up but … i ended up liking him by the end even though hes a douche haha. Like it was good, i cant explain. The FMC kinda irritated me a little but still loved the book.. and the audiobook narration was just 🔥 absolutely nailed it as usual Joe & Marie just deliver 🖤

Beatitude by DJ Krimmer

6 ⭐️ Audiobook

Genre: Dark Romance

⚠️ CHECK THE TRIGGER WARNINGS ⚠️

Beatitude is my first book/audiobook by DJ Krimmer but it definitely will not be my last. The mental health aspect is one of my favorite tropes in a book, if it’s done correctly… and this was perfect. The traumatic events from the MMC’s childhood created the monster he became but my heart still ached for him… monster and all.

The narrators, Marie Hawkins and Joe Arden gave the characters so many emotions, it felt like the book was playing like a movie in my head. They were amazing in their performances… I didn’t want the book to end.

We have Ronan, the psychopath MMC and Everly, the FMC who is a victim of horrible circumstances. One chance encounter and a single nice gesture sets everything in motion… and that’s where a toxic relationship was born.

The banter between Ronan and Everly was perfect. I loved that she showed courage but also fear. This makes the story more believable and relatable to the character. Anyone would be terrified during these situations with a serial unaliver, not just a complete badasses.

I do I recommend? I cannot stop recommending this audio!

I have a weakness for unconventional love stories…dangle some twisted dark romance in front of me and you’ll get my attention. Tempt me with a beautifully produced audiobook and I’m chasing that beauty. Now, tell me it’s filled with religious trauma and whole lot of bloodletting and I’m foaming at the mouth like a rabid animal.

If you’ve ever wondered how monsters are born, Beatitude tells the tale of two people who have endured the worst of what humanity has to offer. Tragic histories, unwilling circumstances, and uncertain futures definitely fit the bill to send one spiraling into darkness. What happens when two tainted souls find each other in the abyss? An explosive narrative filled with danger, banter and OH SO MUCH steam…that’s what.

Now…this was probably one of the best audiobook productions I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. The emotions exuded by both Marie Hawkins and Joe Arden are just UNREAL, making this a truly an experience. I can’t tell you how many times I had to stop what I was doing to listen…immersive is a horrifying understatement.

Hawkins gives exquisite breath to our girl Everly, the used and abused, yet strong as hell leading lady. Her ability to portray a battered victim with an unbreakable spirit, along with her delivery of sass and quips with a take-no-sh!t attitude had me melting.

Arden’s performance as Ronan is simply breathtaking. Tormented, unhinged, broken…ALL THE EMOTIONS injected straight into the vein. I *felt* it all. Add in an accent and masterful intonation, and I promise you’ll be hanging onto every single word just as I was.

The two of them together in duet? Absolute perfection. Full stop.

While I only got to spend a couple hours with Everly and Ronan, they’ve stuck with me, and I think they’re here to stay. I LOVED this book, and if you’re in the market for a deliciously dark story, I think you will, too.

Twist and pull, baby.

Beatitude is a dark and depraved, yet fun novella that had me hooked from the first second. Make sure you check those TWs!

Though this is a quick read/listen, DJ still managed to pack so much in and create characters that I couldn’t help but fall in love with! Not sure what it says about me, but I loved every second of this book. Ronan and Everly are kind of everything and I wasn’t ready for it to be over!

This duet performance by Marie Hawkins and Joe Arden was absolute perfection! This was my first time listening to Marie but it certainly won’t be my last! Marie IS Everly. She showcased her talent and brought Everly to life in a way that I doubt anyone else could have. And Ronan?! No one can do unhinged and depraved quite like Joe Arden. He makes you FEEL every emotion that Ronan goes through, whether it’s a flashback or in the moment. Between the darkness and the slight accent, I was done for! These two were the quintessential choices to perform these characters and their darkness. I hope to hear so much more from the two of these spectacular voice actors in the future 🖤

Do yourself a favor and read this :)

I had so much fun reading this - I really love the attention to detail in the world building and found it so unique. I love Seryn and watching her unravel what the heck is going on.. and Kaden and Gavrel... yes please. Loved the banter in this! I feel like everything was tied up well - but still leaves me so excited and wanting more from book 2!

2.5 ⭐️ rounded down. This actually had a strong start and I dared to hope this one might be decent. Then the FMC showed up, and it went full hokey mode. The usual dark romance absurdities followed: a parade of depraved men (all killers, kidnappers, or rapists, naturally) and a plot that felt like a mashup of Sick Fux and Little Stranger, but slightly better written. The only real highlight was Joe Arden’s narration, he absolutely kills it (pun intended) in these psycho roles. I had fun in parts, but dark romance still feels more gratuitous than gripping. Maybe I should just stick to horror. 2 stars for the audiobook and .5 stars for the beginning.

Rowan’s obsession? Not just toxic. Not just dark. It’s feral, sick, deliriously poetic. This man bleeds madness and adoration in the same breath, and I ate. it. UP. Like—his inner monologue? That twisted symphony of pain, wrath, and devotion?? Literal music to my ears.

The audiobook? Chef’s kiss to the void. Joe Arden brought Rowan to life in the most haunting, hypnotic, soul-melting way possible. His delivery had me clutching my invisible pearls and reconsidering every red flag I’ve ever ignored.

If you love your MMCs unhinged, lyrical, dangerous, and ready to burn the world for her — Rowan is your next obsession. And he will wreck you with style.

Beatitude: A Depraved Muses Department Novella by D.J. Krimmer — Review
Hot And Passionate Kiss GIFs | Tenor

Beatitude is a dark, intense dive into a toxic romance between two broken souls: Ronan, a diagnosed psychopath and serial killer, and Everly, a thrill‑seeking woman drawn into his destructive orbit. This novella doesn’t shy away from the murkiest parts of obsession, dominance, and emotional decay.

📘 Overall Impressions Atmosphere & Pacing: The novella moves fast—125 pages of unflinching exploration into unhealthy attraction. It grips immediately and rarely lets up. Writing & Tone: Raw, visceral, and unapologetically depraved. Krimmer writes ‘showing’ rather than ‘telling,’ capturing the twisted pull between the protagonists.
Rough Make Out GIFs | Tenor
Trigger Warnings: Contains violence, mental illness, extreme psychological manipulation, non-consensual undertones. Not for the faint-hearted — seriously note the warnings. Characters & Arcs Ronan Initial Profile: Diagnosed with antisocial and borderline personality disorders, instinctively violent and self-aware of his moral abyss. Arc: Begins as a hunting predator—emotionally detached and dangerous. His encounter with Everly triggers obsession, shifting him from detached killer to desperate pursuer. His blackness deepens as he conflates violence with love. Downside: No redemption—Ronan sinks further into darkness. Readers are drawn despite knowing he’s beyond saving, a testament to Krimmer’s character building. Everly Initial Profile: A trouble magnet, bored with safety, intrigued by danger. Arc: Moves from flirtatious danger-seeker to participant in Ronan’s twisted worldview—testing boundaries until she’s equally consumed. Critique: Her transformation is compelling, but some reviewers found her erratic and less fleshed out than Ronan. What Stands Out Pacing & Engagement: Quick yet immersive—characters and stakes are crystal clear from the start. Voice & Narration: In audiobook form, narrators Joe Arden and Marie Hawkins elevate the text—Arden’s deranged intensity is nearly legendary. Toxic Romance Fit: If you enjoy dark, morally ambiguous relationships (serial‑killer tropes included), this delivers and then some.
Criticisms:
“It’s only 125 pages, but if you really enjoy the DARK dark (bordering on pitch black) romance... you have to give this one a read/listen.”
“Their broken pieces fit perfectly together… the smut! All the threatening and domination…”
Rating

⭐☆☆ ☆ ☆

This is a powerful, uncompromising novella that excels at exploring obsession. It lacks warmth and redemption, fully embracing depravity as a lens for romance. Highly recommended for readers who crave emotional extremes and unapologetic darkness. Not suitable for those seeking healthy connections or emotional safety.

Final Thoughts

Beatitude is a short but fierce tale—perfect for fans of extreme dark romance. Ronan and Everly's arcs propel readers through a descent into mutual darkness. Though concentrated, the novella's impact lingers. I’d hand it 4 stars for its execution, atmosphere, and moral unflinchingness—just be sure you're ready for the ride.

TW: Oh so many, I actually had to Google two of them. Here they are if you're curious.

Autassassinophilia is a paraphilia in which a person is sexually aroused by the risk of being killed.

Erotophonophilia, which is sexual arousal or gratification contingent on the death of a human being. Also called, Lust Murder.

Fack! Only Joe Arden can make a Boston accent hot 🔥 🥵
This was a great spicy depraved read. It goes by too fast 😆 However, if it drug on it might have lost the appeal, maybe.

I enjoyed the story, loved the spice, and I would definitely recommend it if you don't easily get put off by murder and psychosis in books, because there is A LOT of that!

My only irk moment of thinking "really" (which to be fair should be the whole spicy depraved thing 😂) was the FMC not knowing the MMC had at least an East Coast accent. I too grew up in the Midwest and it was apparent from the beginning. (Note: I did listen to the audiobook and didn't read the physical book, so that very well could have played a part).

Joe Arden and Melinda Hawkins did a phenomenal job as always with their narrating!

i was actually enjoying this book up until the 60% mark. i loved the mmc from page one, but once they got to the hotel it was just one clusterfuck after another. the mmc had a great sense of humor, was sassy and insane, so of course i loved him immediately. but even he succumbed to the shitshow that started after the 60% mark. the fmc tho? she ruined this novella from her very first chapter.

i’m so sad because the beginning was so freaking good :/ i feel robbed.

other info (possible spoilers):
1st person - dual pov
age gap (fmc mid 20s? mmc 40)
no virgins
no condoms
*sharing (?)
no owd
omd
*cheating (?)
3rd act breakup
hea

*contains spoilers: the fmc randomly invited a man to their hotel room and let him touch her 🐱 while the mmc was tied to the bed against his wishes. the mmc broke free and killed the om.

It’s a dark love story with a smattering of deleting 🤭 ok, maybe there’s a tad more than that. A little kidnapping, in fairness he only kidnaps the FMC. What he doesn’t realise is she is feisty, a fighter, a smarta$$ and had her own darkness.

He also doesn’t realise he is falling in love even though he professes to have no such emotions. She on the other hand, feels they need to get away from one another as they will end up going up flames together but will they? Will they continue his yearly tradition? Or part company?

It was a good storyline, well written, and the spicy scenes were great, not overtaking the plot. A quick novella read.
