I picked up this free as it was a preview book showing the first few chapters in the full novel. I figured it was a good chance to try a new author. Sadly, I decided after completing this that I wasn't going to read the novel itself.
There are good things about it. Dee's grampa is such a nice guy and runs a farm which allows him to be quite self sufficient when the EMP hits. I would have liked to see more of Pete and Jennifer, the preppers who explain the situation to Dee and give her ideas about what to take back to the farm.
However Dee herself is a whiny, rude, spiteful little cow who has made her parents life a living hell since her brother died. She is punishing them and it's all about her feelings. She has no consideration for what her parents are going through-losing a son and having their daughter behave like such a cow. Then she blames them for leaving for a holiday without her to get some peace, I imagine, leaving her with grampa. She plots to steal his car and run away, proving again that she is a selfish and self indulgent brat.
When the EMP hits, the old truck is still working so she is able to move above. Ignoring her limited petrol, dumb Dee drives all over town taking countless detours and runs out of petrol after dark when she finally decides to start home, not caring about how worried her grampa must be! Now of course, she can't get all the precious supplies home. Her stupidity just goes on and on. The thought of putting up with her for a full book doesn't really appeal to me!
