Legions of Roman soldiers, dead for nearly 2,000 years, rise from their graves, under London's streets, with an insatiable desire for vengeance, and a ravenous thirst for human blood.

When conventional weapons fail to destroy them, the nation's only hope lies with a few seemingly ordinary men and women who are willing to risk their lives in a battle against the living and the dead. They have just hours to find out why the Romans have returned and recover the one relic that can send this invincible army back to hell. If they fail, they will be the last heroes Britain will ever have, because the nation’s proud history will come to a devastating and cataclysmic end.

I'm not a fan of zombie stories.

But this mix of history, mythology world destroying thriller and a pinch of horror was most entertaining.

Due to information at the end of the book there will be a sequel - THE BRITANNIA CONTAGION - available in December 2014.

As an enormous devotee of whole-world destroying thrillers, anything of mass demolition or the world is in risk, I have likely seen or perused the vast majority of them. Yet every so often, something so extraordinarily enlivening tags along to shake me out of my taintedness. Furthermore Peter Middleton's 'The Britannia Conspiracy' is one of those books. It compellingly impresses you and steadily enchants you with its tear thundering, edge-of-your-seat story.

The creative ability and premise underlying Middleton's book is a really unique mixed exploit! The heart of this movement pressed story is an antiquated Roman Army from the dead wreaking ruin on the UK, and the individuals shielding humankind and expectation on sending these undead Romans once more to Hell. The general anticipation, the chronicled setting, and the cutting edge movement scenes, held my enthusiasm to the precise end. Perusing this book was similar to setting off to the silver screen! This would be a blockbuster hit motion picture.

You'll adore 'The Britannia Conspiracy', particularly in the event that you happen to love movement and escapade books that are really decently created without any ungainly minute. Middleton's written work clearly shows his scholarly powers, and this is a book that showcases such ability well. I particularly liked the maps and graphs, and as somebody who been to London frequently, it included a level of authenticity. In case you're searching for something worth perusing, then this is the right book.

A modern-day historical fiction

From the beginning of the book the tone is set to assume you are currently in this world where the dead Roman soldiers are causing fear and havoc in modern-day London. As the apocalyptic scenes unfold in a vivid and horrifying way you are drawn into the chaos and along with the characters and are trying to figure out what is going on. I liked the way the characters are introduced, each with a brief history so you get a sense of who they are and what drives them.

I really enjoy books that take factual events from history and add a modern fictional twist, like the Da Vinci Code or the National Treasure series, so I knew I would enjoy reading this. I like delving into a book that makes you question history and how much of what we know is true.

I love London and found this an extremely enjoyable read as I recognized the locations and history. Even if you’ve never had the pleasure of visiting London and enjoying its mash of cultures, rich history and beautiful architecture the writing is so descriptive that you can easily visualize the surroundings as you read. If I had to pick a category for this book I’d say it’s a drama/horror/historical fiction/thriller. Not for the faint of heart but definitely for the adventurous.

Right from the chilling prologue I knew this was going to be something special. The intertwining of the history and mythology with modern thriller and horror aspects and incorporating all the different genres is skilfull work from Mr Middleton. All the elements come together wonderfully and the story runs along at a fast pace. The different time periods are anchored nicely with little details, there is a real sense of that place and time, very evocative. It's also anchored by the characters, particularly the modern team with Sam and Jessica, something very realistic and human in the middle of it all. A fascinating premise well executed.

God Save the Britannia!

I could list my complaints or talk about the things that don’t make sense or go on about what I don’t like but I’m not. This is a tale that you have to just sit back and go with the flow to enjoy. If you can do this, you will find yourself rooting for the Brits to make a comeback and survive the day. The book logs the events of a single day while encompassing two thousand years of backstory. We have zombies, werewolves, evil witches, immortals, black magic, shapeshifters, avenging angels, the Ark of the Covenant, nuclear bombs, Roman Legionaries, and maybe even Jesus all come together for an eventful afternoon but this story belongs to the mighty Britannia!

Another debut novel by someone I have never heard of......but I am very glad I've heard of him now. This book is so much fun!!

2000 years ago Boadicea drove the Romans from Britain, but thousands of Roman soldiers were slaughtered and buried in mass graves or simply where they fell. In the present day Liberius, who was Roman Tribune at the time and made immortal by a witches curse, has taken possession of the Amulet of Ankhef which gives him the power to raise and control the dead. He raises the bodies of every Roman soldier to fall on British soil in a bid to finally conquer Britain. It falls to a small band of everyday people to come together and trace the only ancient relic that can defeat Liberius and his hoard.

Fun fun fun. That's what you will have when you read this. Think Raiders of the Lost Ark......in 2014.......in central London. It is so fast moving you don't get a minute to catch your breath. I couldn't put it down and read it in probably about 10 hours. It has sections of horror. It has sections of ancient history. Most of all from the first to last page it is a roller coaster of a thriller. Well written and obviously well researched it doesn't hold back on the action or the shock factor of taking out key players when you least expect it and the author isn't scared to completely wreck some of London's finest tourist attractions in the name of giving you fun!

Not sure if this will win any huge awards for literature but did I mention it's great fun?

5 fun filled stars from me!

A wild ride!

When the Tower of London explodes and Britain becomes a scene of destruction, the officials assume terrorism. They are greatly surprised when undead Roman soldiers rise and create havoc. This is fun action adventure with a thrilling twist! I loved this book and I am sure that others will find it just as entertaining and exciting as I did.

Not normally a fan of zombie stories, and if that was the primary focus of this story, my rating would have been much lower. But, this is a story of a man cursed to be immortal seeking revenge, and another man blessed with immortality who must find a way to save millions of innocents. Enjoyed the historical notes in the short flashbacks, and some of the tongue in cheek humor.

A refreshingly superb read. I couldn't put it down once I started. A fusion of sci-fi, fantasy, war and witty black comedy. In short, a riveting read exploring love, hate, death and the occult/supernatural. It felt like an addictive series of Fox's 24, but in book form. Brilliant.

I usually don't get near the zombie genre but this was a very pleasant treat. A thriller blending fantasy, zombies and the end of Britain. Enjoyed this very much and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

I wanted to like this but just cannot do zombie stories. I gave it a three because it is not anything wrong with the book, just turned out to be a subject matter I do not like.

I'm not really crazy about Zombie stories, but I plugged my way through it only to be disappointed in the ending since it set it up for at least one more sequel. I thought it dragged some to.

The language was clunky and the characters were one dimensional. As you can guess, I really didn't like it.
