For the Rest of Forever

Rate this book
No matter what mountains we face, we’ll climb them together.

Greg Westin’s thriving career as a landscape photographer is a passion he’s built and cultivated for decades. Although he’s now well into his mid-fifties, Greg is always looking forward, eager for the next mountain to climb, the next trail to hike, the next photo to capture. His love of nature and photography is second only to his love for his husband, Allen—a man with a heart of gold and more kindness and compassionate that anyone he’s ever known.

Allen Westin has worked hard to build a life he loves—a life that is not defined by the trauma he suffered in his childhood, but by the community and people he’s surrounded himself with. His career at the public library in the small town of North Bend, Washington has given him a sense of purpose and fulfillment, and his marriage to his best friend and husband, Greg, has filled his life with joy, love, and adventure.

But when an incident at the library sets off Allen’s deeply rooted anxiety and depression, he and Greg have to face a new challenge—one where the next mountain to be conquered isn’t out on the trail at all.

They must trust in the depth of their love to help them find their footing as they forge ahead into the next phase of their journey toward their forever, together.

For the Rest of Forever is an emotional, angsty MM contemporary romance that tells the unhurried story of two older men in a long-term, committed relationship and how their deep love helps them overcome some of life’s darkest moments. It features heavy mental health issues, hurt/comfort, past trauma, an established relationship (thirty-plus years), a silly but stubbornly protective terrier named Beans, and a sweet happily ever after.

Trigger references to past trauma, including parental neglect and physical/emotional abuse; instances of panic attacks and moderate to severe anxiety; brief instances of suicidal thoughts/ideation; brief mentions of homophobia; food aversion/eating disorder.

This is not a light, easy book. What it is, is exquisitely beautiful. It is very well-written and insightful. I myself suffer from anxiety and depression, and I lost my only child to suicide. Mental health is not an easy topic, nor should it be. I appreciate how well it was handled here.

Greg is a perfect example of the partner we all hope to be lucky enough to find. Allen is such a wonderful, warm and caring person, even to his own detriment. Their relationship is the epitome of relationship goals.

Please read this book. Greg and Allen (and this book) deserve all the love.

It’s ok not to be ok.

This book hits home way too hard for me but in a good way.

You see, 54yr old librarian Allen Westin has always suffered from low self esteem caused by his parents due to his mental health struggles.

And as a warning yes, this book does touch on suicidal thoughts so if that’s a trigger you might want to think about reading it.

Anyway, when he is the victim of a hate crime his nature loving photographer of a life partner of 30+ years and lawful husband of five, 56yr old Greg Westin must find a way to help Allen and figure out what makes himself happy as well.

The story is amazingly told and the characters are very realistic and human. It was also nice to read about older people already settled in life.

As a sufferer of depression and intrusive thoughts myself I felt deeply connected to Allen and all his turmoil.

Becca takes a taboo subject and says “look here we all have to sit and talk about this”. She never tries to downplay or ignore not only what Allen goes through but what his husband is dealing with as well because sometimes it’s easy to forget that our loved ones suffer seeing us in pain.

Greg is every persons fantasy husband as he is so loving and caring and never judges Allen just cares for him.

I loved this story and I’m glad I had the honor to read and review it.

I can’t wait for Becca’s next book.

Becca Neil-nailed it again :)

I just resonate so well with her writing style, and I need to tell you about this book—it's a truly delicious slice of life, depicting the mature relationship between Allen and Greg, two married gay men in their fifties.

Allen is a sweet, shy guy with anxiety and depression, who has struggled for years with low self-esteem caused by a difficult upbringing. A certain incident in the library triggers his trauma, and tensions arise in his relationship with Greg. Greg is the opposite—confident, stable, and successful as a photographer. He has also been a huge support for Allen for thirty years. I really admired his strength and determination, even though he himself felt stressed about what the next day would bring and how the situation with Allen would unfold. Fortunately, they had a support system in the form of friends and neighbors, and their pure and powerful love helped them survive the crisis in their relationship.

The way they communicate and support each other really moved me. Usually, books focus on the early stages of relationships, but not on its mature phase, where you have to deal with much more nuanced problems and solve them on a deeper level. You can't just sweep things under the rug—because this is life in its full vivisection, in all its glory, and you have to face it head-on. You either solve the problem or you don’t. There’s no more honeymoon phase to hide behind; it’s the everyday, painstaking, hard work of maintaining a relationship.
But… Becca didn’t show this as something devoid of satisfaction or boring, but as something that truly builds character and deepens the existing love.
I'll admit I had tears in my eyes!

If you like this kind of style—where emotions are shown deeply and in detail—you'll love this book.

And one more thing! Becca writes very not-annoying characters. If you’re irritated by smart-alecky, arrogant types, you won’t find them in Becca’s work. The characters are very mature, warm, and... wise, yes, truly wise!

I’ve been a fan of Becca’s talent from the beginning, and this book only solidified that. Highly recommend!

Thank you Becca Neil for a copy of this book. This review is entirely my own.

This book broke me and put me back together. I love Allen and Greg. They are such amazing, well written characters.
Allen has anxiety and depression and the way this author wrote the mental health problems and what Allen goes through, his thoughts the physical aspect of mental health was handle beautifully.
The way Greg was with Allen, how he loved him and tried to take care of him but more how he felt was done with care and with respect.

I loved getting to know this characters more. This story will reach in capture you from the start. I laughed, cried and smiled my way through every word, every chapter.
This book gives you hope, makes you wish these characters were real just so you can spend time with them. This book will stay with you long after the last period.

A wonderful, special story.
Had I read of this kind of relationship 20 years ago, I would have thought that it could only be fictional because it was too good to be true, and I would be wrong just because I didn't know this kind of love and union can exist, I didn't see that in my parents. As I read this book today though, everything reminded me so much about the relationship I have with my husband, including the mental health struggles, the love, the codependency, the constant mutual comfort, the actual, real being one thing, one life. I enjoyed it deeply.

I don't like books about older couples in general, but I might change my mind now :D I really enjoyed this story and the "feel real" vibe of it, the emotional vivisection of the older couple's life and struggle, it was really satisfying to read. I need more books like this, help :D

ARC Review: Thank you Becca!

As someone whose primary reads typically revolve around supernatural hotties in their 20s-30s, For the Rest of Forever doesn't look like it would fit the usual picks. Allen and Greg are two 50+ men who have been together Over 30 years. They are married. They have a dog! They have their happy ever after.... Right?

Becca absolutely nails this story of mental health and struggle. Allen, a librarian, has had a lifetime of struggle with his mental health. An abusive past leading to low self esteem and anxiety about his relationships makes for a kind soul who truly struggles in some of the most heartbreaking ways. Greg comes across as the "healthier" one, mentally. A photographer with a love for adventure and the outdoors, he seems well adjusted and the perfect support for Allen. However through his character we also see the struggle and the toll it takes when you are so deeply in love and care for someone with extensive mental health issues.

While I can identify with both characters thoughts and feelings, Greg is the one who really connected to me. From the guilt, to the stress, to the absolute fear that grips him that perhaps this isn't the daybreak... That perhaps this moment of normalcy is only the eye and the hurricane will hit any moment. I have lived his thoughts.

For the Rest of Forever really shows how important community is. If Greg did not have their friends and neighbors, he would have struggled to support Allen. Had Allen not had them, it would have been so much easier for him to dismiss Greg in his darkest moments.

This book will make you cry. Line up something happy and funny after. But sometimes it is good to cry, and this is a good cry.

I'm sitting in my contentment after reading a book. That was so incredibly real and raw and beautiful. This is not the first book I have read by author Becca Neil and I will forever read anything she writes. This book was not always easy, but in the end it wrapped you up in a warm blanket with a hot cup of tea. I literally released a sigh when I got to the end because it was just so perfect.

Greg and Allen have been together for half their lives and married for several years. Throughout their time together, Allen has struggled with the monster of mental health. From an upbringing where he never felt good enough and never felt heard, he struggles to fight those messages and his negative internal monologue daily.

These thoughts and feelings can sometimes completely exhaust Allen. He is so incredibly lucky to have Greg to help him through, remind him how much he is loved, and how important he is. This story takes you through the journey and the struggle that so many deal with everyday. It is written so organically and really takes you through the true love relationship that these two men share. Their community is strong and their love and commitment is stronger.

Greg and Allen live some of their own lives, sharing most interests, and supporting each other from the ground up. Their most important thing is being together and being there for one another. Their love is beautiful. Greg continually reminds Allen that he is worthy, that he is special, that he is needed and that he is loved. I wish everyone who struggled with this monster had someone like Greg.

This author is absolutely fantastic. And this book is well worth the read. I am usually used to reading MM books with young, 20 somethings. Having these men be established in their relationship and a little bit older was completely refreshing. I cannot say enough.

For the Rest of Forever is an absolutely beautiful, heartbreaking story. It took me on quite an emotional ride not only with Allen and Greg but through my own history of anxiety and depression as well as my relationship. If you are someone who struggles, this book could potentially be triggering, but it could also just resonate so deeply, so proceed cautiously, but know that Allen and Greg are quite possibly the most beautiful souls you will ever meet and your heart and mental health can be trusted with them.

Allen 🥺. I just want to hug that man so hard. I saw so much of myself in him that at times. I had to set the book down for a few moments just to regroup. Watching someone you love struggle is never a light thing, and you love Allen immediately.

Greg 🥹. This man. While he is not entirely perfect, he might be pretty darn close. He is such a rock. Even with his rock status, seeing how much he struggles with sometimes helplessly watching the love of his life struggle was just crushing. He is, however, making my fiance upset because I did ask him the other day why he couldn't be more like Greg 🤣.

This story is emotional. It's raw. It's beautiful. And you should absolutely check it out.

I don't even know where to begin with this book.

The main plot is HEAVY! I do not recommend reading this book if you have or are dealing with a fragile mental state/severe mental health troubles.

That being said, this book does an INCREDIBLE job on dealing with mental health issues. And really shows both the ups and really low downs of being in that kind of head space.

Allen and Greg are an incredible, powerful couple, who you can genuinely feel their love for each other. They know each other so well, even when barriers come between them. Greg is so attentive to Allen's needs, and it SO WONDERFULLY supportive to him.

I had to set the book down several times because I was crying so hard, I physically could not see. And I enjoyed every second of that feeling. Because being able to convey that kind of emotion takes immense talent. Though, I'd expect no less from the mind of Becca Neil. She knows exactly how to portray a sweet and meaningful relationship.

This is, without a doubt, one of my top reads of the year. And it fell into my lap exactly when I needed it most.

Thank you, Becca, for this incredibly heartfelt story. 💕

I'm gonna be honest, I don't usually pick books with characters older than mid thirties, because the ones I usually see with such characters are based on age-gap tropes. This book was the first try, and the blurb itself grabbed my interest. No, it owned my interest, and I just had to give it a try.

This book focuses on a married gay couple in their mid-fifties, the point where most books and movies call the curtain, and the show ends, but here, it has just taken another turn.

Allen, such a sweet and loving guy. When it started, I saw him as someone who is doing his best to support his husband's photographer passion, but then it starts to show the true side. Allen is broken, scared, and going through mental health issues, which destroy his self-esteem. And that hit me hard...

Greg, can I just say I respect and love the hell out of him? With him, the story became even better. It didn't just focus on the struggles of the person who is facing mental health issues, but also of the people who love them dearly and want to help, yet start feeling lost themselves.

I'm trying my best to keep this spoiler free, but I definitely recommend it!

Allen and Greg have been together for over 30 years. Through good and bad, they have loved each other and held each other close. Then a hateful event at the library he works at triggers Allen’s anxiety, causing past traumas to resurface, and putting a strain on their relationship and their own individual mental health.

Through trust, love, and a lot of communication, Allen and Greg are able to sort through the challenges that life presents and continue to build on The Rest of Forever.

This is the first book I’ve read by Becca Neil and I was moved. It was beautiful and an absolutely brilliant story that grabbed me in chapter one and never let go. This is not an easy read as it deals with grief, depression, anxiety, and a host of other heavy topics. But it is a wonderful read. The story flows smoothly, and Allen and Greg are both so lovely and relatable. The community they are surrounded by is idyllic. I hope you enjoy Allen, Greg, and North Bend as much as I did. I’m so excited that I had this opportunity to read For The Rest Of Forever. And I would emphatically suggest you run not walk to get your copy.

This is such a unique and gorgeous book. I don’t really know how should I write this review because I have felt so many emotion reading it. It’s the inner journey of Allan and Greg; dealing with past trauma and how much it means if one finds that special person to lean on and love. The way Greg took care of Allan, understood him and never judged or ridiculed his feelings meant so much to me because of some personal circumstances. I really really loved that it was not as much about spice and sex but about the emotional connection.

Also it’s so nice to read books where the characters neither teens nor college students and they are in the later part of their lives.

I really don’t know why but I am sure their cute little dog was a cat in a previous life.

Such a wonderful and REAL book. Greg and Allen’s story is one of true love. Love that binds souls to face both the “for better and for worse,” and come out stronger for all the experiences. I cannot recommend this book enough! However, as the trigger warnings say, the topic of mental illness is portrayed in a real way, so be prepared.

Becca has done it again. I absolutely love everything she writes. This book is an emotional rollercoaster. Greg and Allen are so perfect together. Allen is battling depression and anxiety from childhood trauma and Greg does his best to be supportive and loving. Together they work through an emotional traumatic event that brings back all of Allen's past worries.

4.5 stars. A beautifully painful book. It was refreshing to read two somewhat older MCs (in their 50s) living in a long-term relationship. Allen's lifelong struggles with his mental health were really well portrayed. Greg was an excellent support. Managing to keep trying to communicate despite their insecurities and fears was impressive. The feelings were strong.

I really wish this was first person instead of third. I feel like for such a heavy topic discussed in this book, you would have really been able to connect with the characters more with a first person POV and grasped their feelings on a deeper level. That aside, the relationship between Allen and Greg is so full of love. Greg’s unconditional support is everything and Allen is so lucky to have him as his husband to lean on. Others would have found it to be too much to handle but Greg would give up anything to be with his husband and take care of him.

Beans was a cute dog and protective over his owners. I loved when he wouldn’t leave Allen’s side when he was experiencing his lows. Their small town was super supportive and friendly. It was beautiful to see how they showed their love for Allen after the library incident and when they were on their little getaway.

Overall, this book covered the important topic of anxiety and depression, and the importance of a strong support system.

Very good and very realistic story. The author did an amazing job portraying Allen's mental health, his depression, his pain and, especially, all the triggers that sent him spiraling.
Greg was awesome, the perfect, steady, loyal husband, ready to do whatever it takes to support his lover.

The only thing that prevented me from giving a higher rate was precisely Greg: he was just too perfect. With the exception of their argument about Allen returning to work, he never wavered, he was always ready to take care of Allen, he made all the sacrifices. I think it would have been more realistic seeing him struggling a bit too, being tired sometimes or snapping. I think it would have made him more human.

For the Rest of Forever was such an emotional read.
I am not one to be triggered easily, but I'll admit that I had to pace my reading because this book broke me multiple times. It touches heavily on the topics of anxiety and depression, with depictions of suicidal ideations, so please remember to check the trigger warnings, and most importantly, take care of yourself 💕

It is a testament to Becca Neil's writing though, that I felt like I was in Allen's mind while he struggled with all his deeply intrusive thoughts. I kept going though, because I wanted to see him getting better and witness his happily ever after, because he was so loved, not only by his husband Greg, but the whole community he was a part of.
After the incident at work that sent him spiraling, everybody rallied around him to show him just how much he mattered. The amount of love and support pouring out of this book is just what everyone wishes they could get from the people close to them.
The real MVP though, was Greg. 30+ years of being in a relationship with Allen didn't alleviate the fact that this sudden relapse in his mental state was difficult to navigate. But despite all the fears and doubts, he was so supportive, patient, and loving, it was beautiful to see.

I loved this story, and would recommend it if you're looking for a wholesome love story with an established long-term relationship, MCs over 50, hurt/comfort, all the feels, mental health rep, and a silly terrier sidekick.

4.25****

A very enjoyable read, though a bit short. What I liked most was that the book has a very sentimental feel, like an old-fashioned movie where we dive deep into the characters' lives and emotional struggles.

I rarely read books about older couples, but the author did a great job capturing the essence of a "mature" relationship—one that has already withstood the test of time but now faces another challenge as Greg and Allen must deal with Allen’s worsening mental health issues.

I read it slowly, but I never got bored. I would have given it a 5, but I really missed having a bit more backstory on how they met and how their relationship began. I wanted more about the birth of their love, without taking away from the current moment, which is the heart of the book. I just felt like I needed that extra piece to fully connect with the characters.

That said, the book is still very high quality, well-written, and clearly thoughtfully crafted. You can tell the author put a lot of heart into it, and I really appreciate the effort and patience in building the emotional tension between the characters.

The book ends with a bit of a HFN, but that’s okay, because that’s how life is, right?

“Don’t listen to it,” Greg murmured. “Listen to me instead. I love you. You’re worthy, you’re loved and valued, and you deserve all the love and all the happiness.”

AHHHH.

I love an established relationship book!!!!!! This had me deep in my feels, i read it in one day.

Greg was soooo soft for Allen, and Allen's struggle throughout the book was so heartbreaking - seeing him sort of regress after the incident but slowly find himself again and Greg really made sure to highlight how loved he was.

“You can rest now, darling. Just rest and let me take care of you. Let me love you.”

Every time Greg called Allen "darling" an angel grew its wings.

They were truly so perfect for each other and the care and love was just SO evident between them it made me insane.

Beautiful, hurt/comfort

This was a beautiful, painful and realistic look at mental health issues.
Allen had a horrific childhood and it's left scars.
Greg has been by his side and is such a wonderful, caring and supportive partner.
Living with a mental health issue is so hard and it's also hard on the person's family and friends.
Thankfully they have a great supportive community and even their sweet dog Beans is able to provide comfort.
I loved that the author didn't write this with Allen being fixed but realistically working hard every day to make sure he's doing what's necessary to be ok on a daily basis.

The book was a very pleasant journey—super sentimental for me because I once knew a similar couple of older gay men, which made it feel close to home.

I teared up and cheered for them, and I truly enjoyed the way the author portrayed their love for each other—different, yet still very intense. The emotional depth was palpable, and it left me feeling good inside. An excellent book.

I’m always grateful for the chance to review an ARC, so I’d like to thank Becca Neil for this opportunity.

The Rest of Forever isn’t my usual genre, but after reading the blurb, I felt drawn to it. Some of the issues mentioned reflected my own experiences, and despite knowing there could be triggers, I decided to dive in.

This novel is an emotional and compassionate examination of mental health within a long-term relationship. It tells the story of Allen and Greg, a couple in their 50s who have been together for over 30 years.

On the outside, their life seems ideal. However, Allen has struggled with mental health challenges for most of his life. His past trauma, rooted in abuse, has left him grappling with low self-worth and relationship anxiety. Becca handles his character with such care that it’s easy to feel the depth of his internal struggles.

Greg, by contrast, appears to be the stable one. He’s a photographer with a passion for the outdoors, and on the surface, he’s well-balanced, serving as Allen’s rock. Yet Becca beautifully explores the emotional toll of caring for someone with ongoing mental health issues. Greg’s journey of trying to maintain his own sense of self while offering unwavering support to Allen adds an extra layer of complexity, revealing the realistic challenges of loving someone through their darkest times.

This book really made me think. It was deeply moving and stirred a range of emotions, leaving me reflecting on my own life and wishing for the kind of supportive community that Allen and Greg are lucky enough to have.

My advice is ensure you have something warm and fuzzy to read after, and more importantly remember you are worthy, you are loved and you are enough.

Wow, wow, wow...For the Rest of Forever is PHENOMENAL! I'm not sure I'm going to be able to fully verbalise how amazing this book is, but I'm going to try....

For the Rest of Forever is about an established couple (30+ years) in their 50s who live in a small PNW town with their terrier Beans. Allen is living his dream running the local library, while Greg is a photographer travelling and climbing mountains to get the best shots.

Allen realises his anxiety and depression are getting bad again when he and Greg are on their way home from a trip, but is further compounded following a terrifying incident at the library. His intrusive thoughts escalate to the point where he feels like he's such a burden on Greg and would be better off not being around.

It is so beautifully written, and done with such sensitivity, while also being incredibly realistic in the way Allens experiences and thoughts are shown on page. And the ways that Greg supports Allen and how is there for him through his struggles, shows how much love he feels for him. It's truly one of the best mental illness representations that I've read.

It's not an easy read due to the topics, and if these are a trigger for you, please be aware and read all the TWs and authors note before reading.

Greg Westin’s thriving career as a landscape photographer is a passion he’s built and cultivated for decades. Although he’s now well into his mid-fifties, Greg is always looking forward, eager for the next mountain to climb, the next trail to hike, the next photo to capture. His love of nature and photography is second only to his love for his husband, Allen - a man with a heart of gold and more kindness and compassion than anyone he’s ever known. Allen Westin has worked hard to build a life he loves - a life that is not defined by the trauma he suffered in his childhood, but by the community and people he’s surrounded himself with. His career at the public library in the small town of North Bend, Washington has given him a sense of purpose and fulfilment, and his marriage to his best friend and husband, Greg, has filled his life with joy, love, and adventure. But when an incident at the library sets off Allen’s deeply rooted anxiety and depression, he and Greg have to face a new challenge - one where the next mountain to be conquered isn’t out on the trail at all. They must trust in the depth of their love to help them find their footing as they forge ahead into the next phase of their journey toward their forever, together.

This is a very emotional read as Allen and Greg go through a very emotional time as Allen struggles with his depression and anxiety. I loved the unconditional support from Greg although he had to do some soul searching as he tried his best to support Allen. They also had some key friends who supported them both in their own way. Easy to read, feel and understand you will feel emotional at times. This was an MM story with mature content.

** Please read the trigger warnings.
