Three small girls standing together Two tenderly cradling baby dolls The middle child clinging to her Friends’ small arms Her dark hair lifted by the wind She seems the most serious Her face holds but a whisper Of a smile For this important occasion All their childish eyes look forward Into the distant future That only one will have.
This book was researched and written as a tribute to Susanne Ledermann. She was the childhood friend of Anne Frank, and Hannelei Gosler. They called themselves “Anna, Sanna, and Hannah”. Along with many others, their lives were forever changed by the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands in 1940…
This was a really really short read. But that's perhaps appropriate as Susanne had a short life. Sloan has really done her research here and has written a fitting tribute to a young girl who's life was cut short by the Holocaust. The only thing I would say, is that one of Sanne's friends was listed as Eva Schloss. At the time, Sanne knew her she was called Eva Geiringer.
