Slow Burn

Rate this book
Filled with scenes of sizzling passion, plot beats of swoon-worthy romance, and a cast of Black female characters that you’ll fall in love with, the unputdownable debut novel from Oti Mabuse brims with heat and heart. Perfect for fans of Talia Hibbert, Laura Jane Williams, Tia Williams, Farrah Rochon, Hannah Grace and Bolu Babalola.

For dancer Lira, Latin Ballroom is everything. Whilst her dreams of fame were cut short aged 19, she’s never forgotten the connection she felt dancing with a stranger at the Paris World Championship afterparty 13 years ago.

Now, with her younger sisters pursuing their own successful dancing careers, and the responsibility of running the family dance studio falling to her, Lira’s ambitious flame is about to flicker out. Until a chance encounter sees her secretly auditioning for Slow Burn, a new dance show about to embark on a 6-week European tour, and coming face to face with a blast from her past that sends her reeling.

Gabriele is the quintessential bad boy of the Latin Ballroom scene. Slim of hip, with long, lean muscles that pop, a chiselled jaw, dark eyes, obscenely long lashes, and a mouth that just won’t give, it's no surprise when he lands the principal male lead role on Slow Burn. But, with just a few weeks to go till the tour starts, he still hasn't found his female co-star. All it takes is one audition to set his world on fire...

On the dance floor they’re smouldering, off it, they’re on fire.

It’s September which means the imminent return of Strictly Come Dancing bringing sparkle and entertainment to Saturday evenings. So what better time to read a book by former professional dancer from the show Oti Mabuse? Thanks so much to Sara-Jade at Team BATC for sending me a gorgeous early copy of Slow Burn and for the invitation to take part in the blogtour.

So let’s get the obvious question out the road first of all. There has been a lot of debate recently about celebrity authored novels and whether they have actually written them or not. This book makes clear on the inside (though not on the cover) that it was co-written with author Lorraine Brown. I’m glad to see that being acknowledged and the co-writer being credited.

Right, onto the book! Lira was a Latin dance champion whose career was cut short when she was just 19. She runs her parents dance studio but dreams of performing again. Gabriele is a hugely successful Italian star of the Latin ballroom scene and about to start touring in a show called Slow Burn. Lira unexpectedly finds herself called to audition and is cast as his co-star. However, these two are not strangers to each other having spent one hot night together (the prologue!) in Paris back when Lira was 19. Yes, there’s that age again. What happened to Lira all those years ago that changed her life path? It’s all very intriguing!

As you would expect from Oti Mabuse, dance is centre stage of this book. I loved reading about the show, the rehearsals, the classes and all the glitz and glamour of the professional ballroom dancing scene. You really get a sense of the commitment and passion needed to work in the industry. Talking of passion, well there is plenty of that both on and off the dance floor. The whole book seemed a little like an Argentine Tango with our two main characters experiencing drama, emotions and closer connections as the story progresses.

This is a romance novel: you know these two are going to get together however bumpy the road to romance may be. The story moves between the points of view of both Lira and Gabriele so there’s a sense of circling round each other that I think you get in Latin dance. Through them, we find out about family pressures which threaten their dancing dreams and how devastating that would be for them.

Slow Burn is a book which will appeal to anyone who enjoys their Autumn fix of Strictly. It’s passionate, romantic, colourful and dynamic. What score would the judges give it? I’ll leave that for you to decide!

On the dance floor they’re smouldering, off it, they’re on fire.

Oti Mabuse’s Slow Burn is exactly what contemporary romance should be: a story rooted in character, driven by chemistry, and wrapped in a setting that pulses with energy. The connection between Lira and Gabriele is laced with history and hesitation.

What sets this novel apart is its sincerity. The dance scenes are vibrant, add depth to the story and plot, but never overwhelm. The narrative stays focused on the internal journeys of its leads, two people who once brushed against greatness, only to have life pull them in different directions. Their reunion is messy, mature, and handled with care. Their romance builds perfectly and is believable, it earns its place page by page.

I know the number of people wanting to read about two professional dancers trying to hate each other while playing a couple on stage might be... well. Small. But as someone who used to think the world well lost if I didn't spent 10 hours a week at the dance studio, I am SO happy that Oti teamed up with Lorraine Brown to tell this story.

To be honest, it dragged a bit for me in the middle, but I was really glad there was no no big drama other than, will they finally get iver themselves and start talking. The dance scenes were really well done, you feel Oti's love for dancing shine through in every one of them. I really loved the atmosphere of the company and the theaters and gahhh.

Anyways. If you're not a fan of dancing, maybe the two authors might make you at least want to, but I really enjoyed this and hope Oti will not be too busy with Dancing with the stars to tell one more story.

[ ad (gifted book) - thank you to Simon & Schuster UK for providing an arc of this book. All thoughts are my own.]

Slow burn is a fast paced contemporary romance about second chances, dance and family dynamics.

As someone who doesn’t know much about dance, I found this book a really interesting insight into this world. I also enjoyed that we had POVs which alternated between the two main characters. That being said, I would have liked to have a little more depth to the main characters as I felt as though I didn’t connect with them as much as I could have.

Overall, I think this is a perfect quick and fun romance read.

I received an ARC of Slow Burn through NetGalley.
I will be honest- I’m generally not a lover of celebrity written fiction but Slow Burn blew me away!
I read most of it on a flight back from holiday as I couldn’t put it down.
I love Strictly and so some of the dance styles and terms were familiar, however you can easily follow the story without knowing them. The characters definitely grow as develop throughout the book.
The story was well paced and flicked between the two main characters which is a nice touch and helps the reader understand their point of view.

(read for book club)

I feel bad for giving such a harsh review to a debut novelist but I really think that this is not a good book. It included the classic character tropes of the hardworking, obedient, eldest daughter and the good-looking, bad-tempered, stubborn love interest, and it was so incredibly cliche and predictable with no surprises or plot twists along the way. Both of their internal monologues were repetitive and insufferable, and I didn’t even fully see the point of including his point of view. The only part I somewhat liked was the family dilemmas of choosing between supporting the parents’ businesses and doing what was expected of you, or living your own life; this can be a relatable issue, so that part of the story may provide comfort to those going through similar situations. Overall, a simplistic, underwhelming book with bad quality writing, which may be more interesting to a dancer, but I personally found it unengaging and boring, and that they really put the ‘slow’ in ‘slow burn’.

For her (Oti Mabuse) first book this was a lovely book. I really did enjoy the concept around the dance and theatre world, it was a lovely new scenery for me personally within the romance book world.
My love (and dislike) for the characters flowed throughout the book which as it meant that when they were being difficult or stupid, I was invested/shouting at them and when they were choosing themselves and their happiness, I was excited for them.
This book brought out a number of themes such as eldest first daughter especially in an African home, choosing your self and happiness or what your family expect and all the fear, guilt, hurt and joy that comes with navigating it, familial expectation, self actualisation etc.
Overall, a lovely first publication from Oti Mabuse!

I enjoyed the concept of this story, 2 dancers both struggling with balancing their dreams with familial expectations. I liked the dance knowledge, and chemistry between the main characters. However I did struggle with the actual writing style, it didn't flow well for me I sometimes found it difficult to stay in the story because of it. That being said this was a good debut novel

I was delighted to receive an advanced copy of Slow Burn by Oti Mabuse. A glittering story around dance, family, relationships, passion and heat!

Firstly, I love the cover and I also love how each chapter alternates between the two main characters, Lira and Gabriele, with a pencil drawing of them both. A lovely touch.

Lira and Gabriele are the two main characters of the book. Lira, a Latin Ballroom dancer, lives for dancing. Dancing is all she has ever wanted to do in her life. When she was younger, she was living her dream, competing in Championships, and winning at them. However, at 19, being the eldest sister, she had to stop her dream and run the family business, a dancing studio. Her dancing dream was shattered, but due to her devotion to her parents and her family, she made the decision and stopped dancing professionally. Being torn away from what she loved, understandably had a huge impact on her life.

Lira has two sisters - both who are in the dancing world. But they were concentrating on their careers, just like Lira should have been, and did not help out at the studio.

Then we have Gabriele! The lead male dancer in a new show called Slow Burn. He is an only child and his family own and run a vineyard. And like Lira, due to his father's declining health, his family would like him to return to the family home and help run the business so there is a huge amount of pressure on him too.

Slow Burn is the new dance show which is going on tour but they need a female lead. Thankfully for Lira, they set up auditions at Lira's studio to find a partner that would be the perfect match for Gabriele! As you can imagine, this is a very hard search as they have to be the right fit for each other and have the perfect connection and rhythm. They have to dance in tune with each other, they have to feel the heat, and match each other's energy and passion. The perfect leading lady has been starring them in the face the whole time! Lira is the perfect fit and just like a jigsaw piece, they dance together seamlessly.

This is not such a surprise, as over ten years ago they did dance together, once, but that one time, was enough for them both to remember how amazing they can be together. And they spent one night together too - so was this a second chance for them both.

And their intense passion is not just on the dance floor! You could feel their fire, their hot chemistry for each other, jumping off the pages, setting them ablaze!

All set ... Slow Burn goes on tour and the show is an absolute roaring success, travelling around the (glitter!) globe. Behind the smiles, the footwork and the passion, there is also the family pull to be back helping at home, and to be more involved. There was no support from either family. I was venting at times as I so wanted the families to look at their children, at how they were absolutely living their dream and so much more, doing what they always loved to do. To give up their dreams, was extinguishing their love for life and it was so unfair.

So, do Lira and Gabriele get to continue their dreams? Can their families see through their own needs, to see that their children are living their best life, and that they should allow them to shine?

I loved how we got to see the different countries on the tour and I loved how the book ended. We should all follow our dreams, and although we may have to make sacrifices for our family, everyone should all work together, as it brings out the best in everyone and allows each member of the family to thrive and have the future that they want.

I did not like Daniella one bit - a very jealous ex partner. But her character was very well written and portrayed.

A brilliant book, with fabulous characters, a great storyline with fun, drama and romance and a beautiful ending! I also loved the questions and answers with Oti at the end.

And just as Len Goodman would say on Strictly Come Dancing, 'It’s a ten from Len!, it's a 10 from me! As 5 is the highest here, I am giving this wonderful read a perfect 5 stars!

Thank you to Simon & Schuster UK for my advanced copy. This review is based on a NetGalley ARC provided in exchange for an honest and unbiased opinion.

The last time Lira and Gabriele saw each other was 13 years ago at the Paris World Championship when they danced together. Fast forward to the present and Lira and Gabriele are now the main leads in the new dance show Slow Burn. Can Lira and Gabriele make the show a success?

As a big fan of Strictly Come Dancing I couldn’t wait to read this book. The storyline included romance, drama, passion and dancing. I really enjoyed the writing style especially the scenes where Lira and Gabrielle danced. Those scenes were so descriptive that it felt like I was watching the show in person.

Lira and Gabriele were the perfect leads for the story and the show Slow Burn. The first meeting between Lira and Gabriele was certainly a memorable one because they never thought that they would see each other again and to find out that they would be working very closely together took them both by surprise. The passion during their dance routines definitely spilled off stage and their chemistry was off the scale.

I really liked Lira from the beginning. She is clearly an accomplished dancer and despite not being a known name in the industry she is still cast in a lead role. I would describe Lira as selfless, putting others before herself. When Lira finds out that she has the role in Slow Burn she finds herself leading a double life as she doesn’t feel able to tell her family. When the news is made public I did feel bad for Lira because the reaction from her family was not supportive. They seemed to imply that she was being selfish and ruining their plans by embarking on this new career. I was a little unsure about Gabriele to begin with because he seemed a little frosty but I did warm to him. Gabriele’s frostiness is explained when he and Lira have a heart to heart. He still hasn’t got over Lira leaving him without a word after their liaison 13 years ago. But the reason Lira left was because that evening marked the end of her dancing career. The start of a new life as a dance teacher that Gabriele could never be part of even if she wanted him to be. As Lira and Gabriele start to reconnect tragedy strikes which threatens to separate them once more.

The one thing that Lira and Gabriele have in common is their obligation to their family and responsibility placed on them by family. In Lira’s case her parents expect her to run the family dance studio singlehandedly while they do their own thing and support her sisters in their successful dancing careers. It did feel like Lira had been left behind and forgotten about by her family. Lira’s hopes of pleasing her parents had been detrimental to her own career plans. In Gabriele’s case his parents appear to be supportive but they really want him to manage the family vineyard full time.

I had so many favourite scenes in the story but I really loved the time Lira and Gabriele spent in Lisbon because this is when they truly reconnected.

A brilliant read.

There’s something so satisfying about a story that mixes passion, family dynamics, and second chances—and Slow Burn delivers all three in the best way.

You absolutely don’t need to be a fan of Strictly (or even dance!) to enjoy this one. Yes, there are theatres, studios, and glitzy moments on stage, but the heart of this story is 100% the romance—and what a romance it is. Smouldering tension, electric chemistry, and all the push-pull you could hope for. It really lives up to its name.

I wasn’t sure whether I’d picture Oti Mabuse as the lead, but I didn’t. Lira came across as completely her own person. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the emotional threads—dreams, doubts, and family pressure—were inspired by the author’s own experiences. But let’s face it, a lot of us will relate to putting ourselves last or feeling stuck.

Lira and Gabriele take turns narrating, and it works so well. They’re both a bit emotionally unavailable, but not in a tired or overdone way. Gabriele might be the classic bad boy of the Latin Ballroom world (all charm, swagger, and ridiculously long lashes), but he’s also self-aware—which made me warm to him surprisingly quickly. The glimpses of vulnerability underneath the arrogance just spoke to my heart.

Lira is the eldest daughter and very much the glue holding her family together. She’s carried responsibility for so long she’s forgotten what it’s like to put herself first. Watching her start to stand up for herself—especially when her usual support system isn’t there—was honestly one of my favourite parts. Her strength builds quietly but powerfully, and I loved her for it.

There’s a strong theme of family sacrifice threaded through both characters’ stories, and it gave the romance even more emotional depth. And yes, the chemistry really is sizzling. The slow build, the banter, the stolen moments—it was all very believable and completely swept me away.

Slow Burn is vibrant, heartfelt, and so much fun to fall into. I thoroughly enjoyed it—and if you love a layered love story with real heart, I think you will too.

Slow Burn.

Slow burn is a fiery romance story about passionate dancers, one former the other still pursing it, and how a chance meeting would be the start of a, you guessed it, slow burn romance over a decade later!

One of my favorite parts of this novel was strangely not the romance, but how the author accurately weaved sibling dynamics and more pointedly, older sibling relationships with their parents and their siblings.

I didn’t necessarily love the chemistry between both characters because it didn’t quite stick the landing in building the tension. I think they stood more perfectly alone than they did together. For them to still be pining for each other because of their physical chemistry didn’t make the most see sense especially because that bridge between what they were (or weren’t because they only knew each other for one night) to who they are wasn’t established well enough and I think that would have definitely helped give this book a higher rating. I don’t think it helped that Gabriel was a particularly unlikeable character who could have benefited from communicating more!

The things I did enjoy were how you could tell from the writing alone that Oti Mabuse is very passionate about dance (it helps that she’s also a dancer and competes herself!) and the inclusion of South African heritage sprinkled into the book from the names of characters to the cuisine was really great to read! Lira was also a favourite character of mine because the minute she found her voice to tell her family what she really wanted??? Her development was too good!

I do think because of its memorable prologue and fast pace writing, to feeling intense emotions about characters whether good or bad, Slow Burn would grab the attention of readers, especially if you’re trying to get out of a book slump because it took a while but it did an amazing job at that!

Thank you @jonathanballpublishers for the arc and happy release day to Slow Burn!

Sexy, Sultry and Sizzling!! That's how I'll describe this read and I loved it!! One of those books that you pick up and then can't put down as you're so invested and really enjoying the drama unfolding on the pages! And you don't even have to be a big Strictly Come Dancing fan to enjoy it as it focusses on the human side of relationships, with the added passion that dancing brings to the fore!

Lira has always danced and her family have always been involved in the dance world too. BUt her big shot at fame ended in her late teens, so she's been running the family dance studio ever since, always wondering about the 'what ifs' as her passion for dancing is still there. Dare she dream again of making it in the dance world when an audition opportunity comes her way?

Gabriele is the bad boy of the dance world! HIs sole focus is his dancing, and himself! He seems to be seeking that 1 person that he can grow old with, but seems to have a short attention span when it comes to women so they don't last long in his life!

The action sizzles when it comes to the dancing and relationships in this story! Lira was a really lovely character as she'd always put duty to the family studio first, never thinking of her own dreams, so you really feel for her when she gets a new opportunity to follow her dreams! And with the author knowing the dance world so well, you really get the behind the scenes drama and personality clashes which you can imagine happening in real life!! Strictly scintillating!!

Slow burn is… a slow burn 😅

We meet Lira, a dancer who’s temporarily stepped away from the stage to help her parents run their dance studio. One day, a Spanish choreographer books the space for auditions and catches a glimpse of Lira dancing - soon, she’s cast as the female lead in his upcoming production. As it turns out, her costar, Gabriele is a successful dancer and the man she once had a steamy encounter with a few years back. What follows is a simmering tension between them as they prepare for the show and navigate their lingering chemistry.

I loved the dance elements in this book. There’s something magical about stories that spotlight creators - especially in a world as electric as dance. I also appreciated the brown characters, and all the familiar South African names and references.

That said, I struggled to stay engaged. The writing felt a bit rigid and didn’t quite pull me in emotionally. As a reader who thrives on rich, layered characters, I found these ones a little flat. Also, while I enjoy spice as much as the next romance reader, the steamy scene at the very beginning threw me off - I prefer slow build-ups and getting to know the characters before things heat up.

Overall, this book had a lot of potential: a stunning cover, a second-chance arc for second chance romance fans and a gorgeous backdrop in the world of dance. But for me, it needed tighter writing and more depth to really land.

Slow Burn
By Oti Mabuse

Slow Burn is a romantic novel about love, passion and lust on and off the dance floor but it is more than that. It is about family, responsibility, sisterhood, conflict and dreams.

Lira was a ballroom dancer at the age of 19 but she stops performing to take care of her family business which involves teaching children and amateurs how to dance.

Gabriele, half Italian, half Argentinian is 100% good looking and he knows it. He’s 22 and also a dancer.

Lira and Gabriele have a passionate night of dancing and more but it doesn’t lead into anything more until thirteen years later when their paths cross again.

I loved reading about a Black woman being desired, beautiful and excellent at what she does. I also loved that there were so many nuances to the characters and their choices.

This is not autobiographical but I couldn’t help but see how Oti’s own life influenced paths of the story.

Lira has two other sisters who are dancers and apparently there is a book two in the making about one of the sisters.

There is an exclusive Q&A with Oti and her Sister Hannah Grace at the back of the book and for those that get the audiobook, the interview is also on Spotify.

I really enjoyed reading Slow Burn by Oti Mabuse. Lovers of Strictly Come Dancing would really enjoy this.

This was a pleasant surprise for me! Oti Mabuse’s debut novel is a genuine treat, with all the dance knowledge you’d expect from a Strictly Come Dancing professional mixed with a tantalising romance that was so easy to enjoy.

It’s very character focused, which is what I want out of a romance novel, but also spends a lot of time showing the very realistic lives of people in entertainment careers. Lira (our FMC) gave up a promising career in dance to help her parents with their dance studio, whilst Gabriele (our MMC) provides a foil to this in choosing to continue his career despite the expectations of his family to help with a family business. They clash after his producer invites her after seeing her performing the moves from the auditions held in her family’s studio - 13 years after they last saw each other at 19.

This book is as much about reclaiming your dreams and life goals later in life. With both leads in their 30s it provides a really mature overarching plot

I really loved my time with this and I mean it when I say it was a pleasant surprise - the character work, the expertise and the fact it’s obviously a labour of love really made my time with it enjoyable.

Thank you NetGalley and Simon & Schuster UK for the ARC. The above review is my own honest opinion.

4.75🌟 What a sizzling, addictive, steamy romance that i could not put down!

*Was kindly sent the ARC by Simon and Schuster!*

This book was.. absolutely everything. Wow. For a debut novel, this provided everything it is that i look for in a good romance book. Gabriele and Lira’s chemistry was out of this world, both on stage and off. I loved their dynamic so much. Lira and Gabriele go through the same struggles, the huge responsibility of running their family business’ despite it not being something that they seek. Because of this, they were able to understand eachother on a deeper level which added to the build up of their relationship. Im very happy with the pacing of the book, considering how the book started off with Gabriele not particularly being happy to see Lira after 13 years to them then seeking eachother out at every moment, it was so beautiful to see. I wish that we would’ve seen more of their romance but the dates in between shows definitely was a great addition. I loved the authors writing and storytelling so I will definitely be looking forward to reading any new work that she’ll put out!

If you’re looking for your next addictive romance book, this is definitely a book that you need to read!

Slow Burn is a beautiful story of second chances, self-discovery, and following your dreams, with two relatable and engaging characters and lots of dancing and romance.

The two protagonists are Lira and Gabriele and I loved that we get both points of view of the story. When Lira and Gabriele first met they were young and full of dreams and they shared a night that they’d never forgotten. The second time they meet, thirteen years later, things are more complicated. They both want to dance professionally and they are now the leads in the dance show Slow Burn that will take them touring all around Europe, but they are both under family pressure and expectations.

Lira gave up her dancing career when she was nineteen years old to manage the family dancing studio outside London. Her parents and her sisters have always taken for granted her commitment to the family business, so when she announces that she is going on tour for six weeks they are not happy. On the other hand, Gabriele has pursued a successful dancing career, but now, due to his father’s declining health, his family would like him to return home to take care of the family’s vineyard in Italy. As Lira and Gabriele try to figure out whether to follow their dreams or give in to their family, they will also have to face their feelings for each other. They haven’t forgotten their night together and as they first rehearse for the show and then they go on tour and dance on stage their chemistry is unmistakable.

I really enjoyed Slow Burn. There is romance and family drama, fabulous characters and fantastic places to visit. I liked the characters of Lira and Gabriele from the very beginning and I loved how they both grow and mature throughout the novel and face their past and their families. Their romance is well-developed: there is passion and chemistry, but also a lot to resolve and I couldn’t put the book down. The writing is superb and I can’t wait for the author’s next novel!

Spice rating: 🌶️

Synopsis

When a well known choreographer hires the studio got auditions for his upcoming show Lira dreams about the dance career she left behind. However, by chance when she is dancing the steps she has watched all day the producer sees and asks her to audition with the lead male who turns out to be ‘G’ or Gabriele. What unfolds is a slow burn, sexual tension filled adventure as Lira rediscovers her love of dance.

Review
This book has a great mix of slow burn sexual tension and development of characters that had me routing for them to get together. The storyline flowed well and at points I was wishing to see the Argentine Tango that was performed throughout the book. The level of spice was just right for this book and the ending worked well. A really nice 4⭐️ read just in time for Strictly to start again. 💃

I devoured this book in no time! It’s an easy read thats full of heart, passion, and rhythm. The romance is swoony and sizzling, but what really stood out for me was how visual and vibrant the dancing felt on the page. I could practically hear the music, see the movement and feel the passion with every scene. The author, Oti’s, own experiences and heart are definitely evident on the pages.

I also loved the South African references woven throughout! This together with the push and pull of being the oldest sibling gave the story such richness and a sense of home. Plus Lira (Lerato) and Gabriele’s chemistry is off the charts, and watching them collide (both on and off the dance floor) gave me that kick your feet and giggle feeling that comes with the best romances.

This is a fiery, heartfelt debut that’s as much about chasing your dreams as it is about finding love! A definite must read!

Feel very lucky that I got to read an advanced copy of this one! Thank you Oti Mabuse and Jonathanball publishers.

As a fan of Strictly Come Dancing and Oti, I couldn’t miss a chance to read this.

Slow Burn is a second chance at life and second chance romance. When Lira suddenly finds herself the co-star of an upcoming West End musical, she knows she has been given a second chance to fulfill her dream as a dancer. She reunites with her former lover and the sparks fly both on stage and off stage.

I loved the second chance concept and the attention to detail about Latin ballroom dancing, rehearsals, dance, glitz and glamour. The world building was superb.

The angst/tension between the characters was incredible. The fire and chemistry were amazing too. Their growth and development was done just right.

Aside the romance, the plot delves into familial expectations, family dynamics, conflict, courage and strength to follow your dreams.

If you want a heartfelt romance mixed with a bit of family drama and a dash of dance then this is your book.

Started and finished date - 08.12.25 to 12.12.25.
My rating – Three and Half Stars.
This book was okay, and I really enjoyed this book, but I didn't love it also I think people who heat of the Moment by BriAnn Danae or the neighbour Favor by Kristina Forest may like is book. The cover of book was simple but stunning and the colour palette at was used on the cover of book was great. The writing was okay, and the writing was easy to follow also the ending of book was fine. The plot of book was interesting, and I did parts of the book at was about dance and theatre world, but I think it could be flash out bit more.

The setting of the book was okay, but it is bit blend, and the atmosphere was fine. I think both the friendships and relationships between the characters was okay, but I think they could be better. The romance in the book was somewhat enjoyable, but it could use some tweaking. I found the paced in the book was well structured and steady paced, but I want it to be a little bit longer. The characters were okay, but I was really frustrated with the choices the characters made through the book, and I think they could use some flash out a little bit better.

Slow Burn is the first novel by well-known dancer Oti Mabuse, and her passion for dance certainly comes through in the story. Lira and Gabriele met briefly as teenagers, but are thrown together as the leads in dance show Slow Burn. Can they resist their confused feelings and give their all to the show?

I loved all of the dance details in the book, and the information about being backstage at a theatre. My favourite dance to watch is the Argentine Tango so I was able to picture the movements being explained in the book. The descriptions of the cities the show travels to were wonderful - the food descriptions were particularly good. I liked the family relationships that were explored in the book too, Lira's family in particular. The story is very steamy, so be ready for it!

A good first novel.

This second-chance romance might center on dance, but it carried so much more than passion on the stage. With themes of family pressure, eldest-daughter responsibilities, and the hopeful reminder that it’s never too late to chase your dreams, this story was unexpectedly sweet, heartwarming, and fun to read.

My only wish is that Lira’s family had been written with more nuance. Early on they came across as harsh and almost villainous, only to shift suddenly into remorseful and supportive. A little more development would have matched the depth of the main characters beautifully. Still, the charm, chemistry, and message of resilience made this a joy to read and one I’m glad I picked up.

Thank you NetGalley, the author and publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!

I was thrilled to received the ARC copy of this via NetGalley and Simon & Schuster.

What a delight. This book is a mature and engaging tale of second chance love, family ties and responsibility. Oti’s expertise in the world of dance shines through adding to the narrative rather than becoming a distraction. It was lovely to read a book where you are rooting for all the characters because even the ones who are there to be disliked have their flaws you can feel for.

I particularly enjoy dual narrative romance and the style was easy to read; evocative of both character and setting.

A perfect summer holiday read soaking up the sun in the book and real life! More like 4.5 if halves were allowed!

The writing style reminded me of a Cosmopolitan magazine article… very editorial. Nice enough, but nothing remarkable.

I love Oti and hoped to feel more of her bubbly flair and incredible humour slip onto the page. This felt… corporate and flat. I didn’t feel emotionally engaged with Lira or Gabriel. It didn’t make me feel I want to take up dancing after reading either, which is unusual because when I read a romance I nearly always end up wanting to cook a certain dish or do something that was described so temptingly in the book that I had to try it.

No such thing happened here. Still, it wasn’t terrible. It hit all the beats and had the parts you would want from a romance. I liked the arc between Lira and her mother. More of a little comforting literary snack than anything else.

Wow - we weren't messing around when we said slow burn were we!

Decent debut from Oti but it did take me a while to get through this one due to the writing style and slllloooowww burn! Not my favourite.
We follow 2 dancers struggling with balancing their dreams with pressures from family. The dance elements were cute and I found the characters likeable and enjoyed their chemistry is just needed a bit more oomph!

Lots of potential here and I like the cover graphics.

Thanks so much for the ARC copy.

I read this in one day so feel like I had to give it 5 stars! This was a great easy-read, perfect for a holiday, lounging on a beach somewhere. It was fun, exciting and had some intriguing relationships and sub-plots. The overall plot was predictable, which some people might not enjoy, but meant it was easy for me to devour in a short period of time. I loved how Oti Mabuse’s dance knowledge came through, making this a slightly more unique romance novel, different to what’s already out there. Plus, the split narrative was great to hear both characters’ thoughts (again, slightly different to others in this genre).

Thanks to NetGalley for a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I was lucky to receive an ARC of this book from Simon & Schuster UK via Netgalley.

The character development was good and the overall story was touching to say the least. However, as the title suggests the romance in this book is an extreme slow burn, which is not quite to my taste. The characters overall had good chemistry and I loved seeing how the romance did develop once it got going.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and the romance being slow burn did not ruin it for me, as there were many other parts of the book which made it a very enjoyable read.
