the nile is flowing.
this may seem unimportant for now, but agatha christie novels have taught me never to trust that anything is completely unimportant.
the boat moves along with the current too. temples pass by, the banks change, the sunlight falls on different parts of the water.
however, our passengers, aren't making quite as much progress.
one is circling around an old love. one around their money. one around their jealousy. one around somebody else's money, which i think is a perfectly understandable christie hobby.
and in the middle of all this, hercule poirot is trying to have a holiday.
the man really does have terrible luck with holidays. if i were him, i'd have changed travel agencies by now.
poirot doesn't, though. instead, he studies the people around him. sometimes it even feels as though he's measuring the distance between them more than he's listening to what they say.
who sits next to whom? who watches someone a little too long? who keeps trying to stay away from someone while somehow always circling back around them? who's in the right place at the wrong time and who's in slightly too much of the wrong place at the right time?
after a while, the inside of the boat turned into a small geometry problem in my head.
person a loves person b. person b is looking at person c. person c may hate both of them. person d seems to have absolutely nothing to do with any of it, so naturally i become suspicious of person d immediately.
poirot was probably working much more systematically than i was.
i hope.
a glance lasts a little too long. a sentence sounds a little strange. a tiny gap appears in someone's story.
and i immediately say, aha. i've got it.
five pages later, i find out that i haven't. then i get it again. then i lose it again.
meanwhile, the nile keeps flowing along perfectly calmly. it clearly has no interest in humanity's little murder problems.
i really liked the contrast between the nile constantly moving forward and the people on the boat staying exactly where they are. the banks change, the boat keeps going, the distance grows, but everyone inside is still tied to the same person, the same ambition, or the same desire.
and that's exactly where poirot comes in. because it feels as though what he's trying to solve isn't simply who did it.
it's more, where exactly do these people stand in one another's lives that's the question.
and in the end, christie takes all those glances, those closenesses and distances, those tiny movements that look like coincidences, and fits them into a single shape.
and all through the novel, i thought i was an extremely serious detective.
i wasn't.
but the view of the nile was lovely.
