'What Your Doctor Eats is a marvellous fact-filled journey of discovery that everyone can learn from and enjoy.' – Tim Spector
When Dr Camilla Stokholm started work as a GP, her health unravelled; she rapidly gained weight, felt exhausted and had debilitating IBS. Determined to find out the root cause, she discovered that what she ate each day played a much bigger role in her well-being than she ever thought possible.
What Your Doctor Eats is everything Dr Stokholm has learnt in her journey back to health. Using the tools in this book – including easy ways to boost the gut microbiome, tips to stabilise hormones and hacks to make sustainable change – she transformed her own health and that of her patients, and now you can too.
With a mixture of myth-busting facts, a look at the role of our genes and diet culture, along with the latest discoveries in nutrition science and with a delicious recipe section, this book is the only book you need to feel at your very best.
I have inhaled a huge volume of wellness/lifestyle/diet content in recent times due to being diagnosed with an autoimmune condition. I often come away feeling overwhelmed, confused and sometimes to blame for my condition. Upon finishing 'What my Doctor Eats,' I feel really empowered and motivated with lots of quick to apply, free and simple changes I can make.
I found the balance of science and theory with practical applications and anecdotes just right. The tone was really empathetic and fair whilst being straightforward and strong in her belief of the information she is presenting.
The ultimate review is that I have bought a copy for my friend as I think this book can be transformative and brings something really important and refreshing to the table!
I have a medical background and thought that maybe parts of this book might have been difficult to understand without that, but each chapter gives a simple summary so if there are bits you struggle with it explains it in the terms you actually need to know later on. Despite having read a few of these sorts of books there were still new things to learn, take away and incorporate into a healthy lifestyle. The section on recipes was small but explains that there's plenty more like that online. I liked that it covers mental and physical health as well as being about eating well.
This is the first good advice on eating and food that I have seen. The book explains why diet advice in the past has so often been wrong - science only recently realised how important our "biome" is. It is very well written so while there are a lot of science-based lessons to get through, it is fun to read.
Incredible book! Really helps you to feel informed and inspired about what you put in your body! I love the 30 plant per week challenge and so much else! Lots of very useful tips. Thank you, Camilla!
This stood out to me in the crowded world of Nutrition books. I found her style easy to read and her explanations of current research and the science behind them easy to follow
First off all the caveats got a bit annoying as the author needed to “cover her back” a lot. Might have been better to have a general disclaimer at the start to explain there is no liability for anything in the book.
Second some chapters got a little carried away with overusing adjectives. This was sporadic so I suspect the book was written in bursts.
But these points do not detract from the core concepts. This book breakdowns how the body digests food into easy to absorb chunks. It describes in simple terms the latest scientific thinking.
Very enjoyable and understandable. Plus debunks a number of misconceptions and assumptions that people think are true but aren’t.
Well worth a read. It should dramatically change your diet if you follow what it says.
