Brinda Berry gives us romance and suspense with Chasing Luck. It is the first in the (Serendipity, #1) series. Told in the alternating POV’s of Ace and Malerie.

At age 7, Malerie's world is turned upside down when she becomes the only survivor of a bombing that takes place in her mother's office building. Losing her mother, she is sent to stay with her guardian Uncle JT. She suffers from nightmares and probably PTSD from the bombing and would rather stay home than venture outside. On her 18th birthday, her uncle takes her to dinner to celebrate and try to talk her into going away to college. While at the restaurant, she is introduced to Ace as the new security specialist sent to handle the security of the house.

Ace is 20 years old, and an entrepreneur. He is trying to open his own security firm. Oh, and he's HOT!

Due to yet another tragedy Malerie is forced to suffer, Ace has been hired full-time as her personal security detail. He takes it upon himself to help her solve the mystery that is her birthday gift.

It is this gift that the story is based upon. At first, I thought perhaps this was going to be a PNR due to the mystery surrounding it. I'm not sure I completely understood the meaning of the gift. Other than it solved the mystery of tragedy at the restaurant.

The Prologue, was fantastic. A great lead in to the story!

Book two Tempting Fate (A Serendipity Novel, #2) will be Collin's story.

*I rated this book 4.5 stars but when leaving a review at sites such as Goodreads, Amazon, etc…I round up to the next highest star!

Not too long ago I got CHASING LUCK over on Amazon. I thought I better get a jump on reading it since I would be hosting Berry in an author signing this coming weekend. And let me tell you, from the start I was intrigued and didn't want to put the book down. So I read and I read and I devoured. This storyline had me sucked in; contemplating whether or not the supernatural was crossing over into this suspenseful romantic read. Was it? Read and discover for yourself.

Now I say it is a romantic read, but a lot of the romance comes later. Of course there is the internal bickering each of the characters has with themselves. Especially Ace. He is tormented about his feelings for Malerie and the job he is hired to do. But the romance was perfectly paced and I was ready for it when it’s time to shine came up. And I must admit, it was nicely done.

Could I relate to the characters? Not really. Both have pasts that affect their present. And it wasn't relatable to me. But I still felt for them, mainly Malerie. So much happens to her in her short life you can't help by feel for her.

Really happy I gave this book a go and found a new author that I will happily read her other works. Definitely hope you give CHASING LUCK a chance and check out this unique storyline. 4.5 Stars!!

Author Brinda Berry recently gifted me a copy of this book. It's the first in a series that, admittedly, I read out of order. Each can be read as a standalone, although the books contain connected characters. If you do plan on tackling the series in order, here's how they should be read:
1. Chasing Luck (this one)
2. Tempting Fate (my personal favorite)
3. Seducing Fortune (to be released March 15, 2015)

Chasing luck features main characters Ace and Malerie, with the novel being narrated in first person (dual perspectives in alternating chapters). Both characters have experienced tragedy in their lives, so they share a kinship with one another, even if they're initially reluctant to acknowledge it. Ultimately, Ace is hired to arrange security for Malerie, but the job ends up morphing into more. Although the two are young--18 and 20 years old, I think--they end up developing a heartfelt, convincing bond. In many ways, it's their quirks that make them a good match, like one is the answer to the other.

Random thoughts:
I love Ace's protective instincts, his selflessness when it comes to Malerie and Mrs. Prata.
I like the numbers that subtly run across the book's cover because they tie into the storyline.
The author's similes...so incredibly unique! Nothing I could ever come up with myself.

Side note: I'm incredibly curious about Jelly Bean Queen! Each chapter is headed with lyrics from the band's songs, but I can't find evidence that the band actually exists. I was thinking about how Colleen Hoover used snippets from The Avett Brothers songs to head her chapters in Slammed; I liked the lyrics so much that I bought several of their songs on iTunes. I was going to do the same with Jelly Bean Queen, but all signs point to the fact that the author wrote them herself--which is really cool and creative.

I'm just wondering about why an author would write a story about a great mistery with real potential (the boxes!!) and then finally not want to solve it??!!!
The beginning was promising, there was a lot of suspense and I loved that I didn't know if this novel involved paranormal elements or if it didn't. BUT THAT'S A QUESTION I WANTED SOLVED at the ending. Unfortunately, the author had other things in mind. And didn't explain anything AT ALL about the one thing that was really interesting about this novel. Well, thank you.
So in the end there was just romance and OMG TRUE LOVE (yes in capital letters!!). But there wasn't really a lot to it except for instalove. And let's admit it. Everything about this romance was just pure cliché. Even the characters and their tragic pasts.. yeah, nothing uncommon in the NA genre.

Surprisingly, I still enjoyed reading this novel. It was somewhat entertaining and I actually couldn't even put it down. But I expected a lot more of the ending .. it was a real let-down. In my opinion there were some -- and if only short -- explanations missing for why all these things happened the way they happened (and DON'T tell me something about coincidence or destiny. Just don't.).

So definitely not a bad novel. It just didn't use all its potential. This could have been a really good novel with just a few more explanations, less foreseeable turns - and a lot less instalovey gushing and love declarations.

If there's anyone who should be allowed to suffer from Survivors Guilt it's Malerie. Her mother died in a bombing. After that, her uncle was killed by a gunman. Malerie simply walked away, physically fine. As she gets older she starts to think there must be a reason. This is where Ace comes in...as her bodyguard. I immediately connected with Ace. You gotta love a 'hero character' with a past he must overcome.

There is a bit of a love story in this book but its really so much more than a romance. It was exciting. A mystery. It literally kept me on the edge of my seat. I thought this was a great book and extremely well written.

Chasing Luck is told in two perspectives. This book is a romantic suspense and I can honestly say I'd give this book 4 stars. The beginning was great. There was tragedies and scenes that spread a smile on my face. But later on in the story, my interest in the book decreased a bit. Overall, I enjoyed this book. I think the pace was very steady. Not too fast or too slow. Humor and suspense is definitely present and the characters are not your average characters.
I look forward to reading the next book (which the first book does have a preview of in the back).
Thank you to the author for letting me read and review it. :)

Okay. So, I enjoyed this book, I truly did. But what I am somewhat confused on is: did the boxes actual have any meaning to the events in her life or was it all staged by the crazy guy Billy ORRRRRRRRRRRR was it all some weird ass coincidence?

I feel like I'm missing something. Like, I went back and reread a few pages just to make sure I was not but I still feel like I am. Ugh, I hate this feeling.

It's a good read. Better than I anticipated but good

Great potential but disappointing execution.

Very little chemistry between the MCs but the dual pov made the H a lot more likable. Without it he would have seemed cold at times and his actions puzzling.

The great mystery was left unsolved, unless it was all just coincidence. Neither would make the ending better, so... hmm what was great?
The storyline was fairly good. There was plenty of action and the mystery surrounding the boxes kept me turning the pages. Too bad it never followed through.

Malerie lived a sheltered life with her uncle JT, after losing her mother at a young aged in a very traumatic event that left her scared forever.

Then her 18th birthday came, where she celebrated it with her uncle JT in a restaurant. On that same day she meets the handsome Ace, who was invited by her uncle for a business meeting for a security job that JT was offering.

After Ace left the restaurant, he realized that he forgot his keys so he went back into the restaurant to get it. What he didn’t expect was the finding JT dead on the floor and Malerie in great danger. Not thinking about anything else, but Malerie’s safety he took her and protected her, until the cops came. When Malerie was taken into the ambulance, he went with her to make sure she comes out alright. He realized that not only did he save her, he made sure she was safe all the way to the hospital…without even really knowing who she is. After making sure that Malerie was ok, he left thinking that was the last he would ever see of her. He was wrong, that day was only the beginning of their journey…

 photo ChasingLuck-Teaser1.jpg

When Ace received a call from JT’s assistant Billy, he was offered a security job to watch over Malerie. At first Ace didn’t want anything to do with the job, knowing he was being hired to spy on Malerie and that didn’t sit well with him. But after thinking about all the bills and student loan he had to pay for, he accepted. What he didn’t expect after taking the job was he would really enjoy being around Malerie. The more time they spent together, the more he enjoyed being around her. Knowing that Malerie’s life is always in danger, they went through different adventures together hoping to solve all the mysteries surrounding Malerie’s life. Which also puts them in very close proximity. Everyday that Ace is around Malerie, is another day he had to learn to control himself. Being with her, getting to know her was hard for Ace, because not being able to touch her was killing him. Until that one day when Malerie offered herself to him, asking him not to reject her again. That day she gave all of herself to him, trusting him and hoping he loved her too.
At the same time in the back of Malerie’s head, she won’t let him get hurt because of her. She believes that everyone she loves dies, that it’s all her fault and she will do anything to not let anyone else die because of her again.

 photo ChasingLuck-Teaser2.jpg

Will Malerie run away from Ace to save him from the danger she believes is waiting for her?
Will Ace and Malerie’s love survive all the craziness that is Malerie’s life?
Read and find out.

I enjoyed reading this story from the beginning to end, it hooked me in from the very first page and I couldn’t put it down. Ace was so sweet and protective over Malerie I just loved it and he wasn’t the only one feeling that way. Their feelings were mutual, the cared deeply about each other. Malerie and Ace adventures were full of surprises, twist and suspense, it was really a great read.

I cannot wait to read the next book in the series and get to know Maleri’s friend Collin.

Malerie is an orphan who has a wealthy guardian that she cares about so much. Seeing someone you love gunned down and bleeding to death is a horrible thing for anyone to ever witness. Well she did and to make matters worst, it was the day of her birthday. What a cruel hand to be dealt with.

 photo ChasingLuck_zps1dffa92d.jpg

Ace works for a security company. He was supposed to be hired by JT who was Malerie's guardian. He has a bad temper and does not let anyone walk all over him. He came from nothing growing up so it's his mission to become a successful business owner of a security company. Took out loans to pursue what he wants. Then he meets a wealthy man and offers him something he wouldn't be able to resist. Specially after meeting his niece had him thinking twice.

 photo chasingLuck2-2_zps4b1f1fbb.jpg

Malerie suffers from PTSD. She was in a building when she was a kid when it collapsed. She was trapped under debris and no one got to her for a full day. They had to dig her out and was the only one alive, two hundred and thirty people found dead. The journey they both took was a chaotic and suspense kind of love story. For someone who suffered with the tragic past who keeps haunting her, Malerie needed someone who could help her, maybe distract her, and maybe, just maybe if at all possible be her future, if she'll ever believe she even has a future. As for Ace, he knew he was done for as soon as he laid his eyes on her the first time. But the question is, will they both be strong enough to fight all the villains who is out to get Malerie? How long does Malerie have to fight to stay alive? Will she push everyone away if she thinks everyone who is around her dies?

 photo chasingluck3_zps6a5a0723.jpg

What a way to keep someone reading a page turner and have them on the edge of their seats, the entire time. I love Ace and Malerie and I can't wait to read about Collin. Thank Brinda for writing such unique story. Looking forward to reading more of your books.

Chasing Luck is the first book in the Serendipity series by Brinda Berry and tells the interesting tale of Malerie Toombs, an eighteen-year-old young woman who has led a very sheltered life after surviving the devastating loss of her mother during the bombing of the office building they were both in eleven years ago, and Ace Sloan, a twenty-year-old young man who is just starting his security business and has led a difficult life. This is a romantic suspense novel and it certainly has healthy doses of both romance and suspense and will have you wondering what really is going on in the story.

Malerie and Ace literally bump into each other the very night of her eighteenth birthday and then meet again several minutes later when Ace is introduced as being a prospective security provider by Malerie's guardian, John "JT" Toombs. When Malerie not just suffers but witnesses yet another death in her life, Ace is there to help but soon leaves. However, the offer to provide security for Malerie is thrust upon him again by Malerie's other guardian, Billy Vandol, and the money involved is something he can't turn away from.

What happens over the next few days proves that this isn't any ordinary security assignment for Ace, with Malerie believing that every tragedy she's experienced so far is part of a destiny that's been set in four mysterious boxes that have UNIX number codes and Moon type, an alternative to the Braille reading system for the visually impaired. Are the boxes really predicting certain life-changing events or could there be something more human and very much sinister trying to permanently get rid of Malerie? Finding out is what may save both Malerie and Ace and give them a chance at a future together.

I enjoyed Chasing Luck and liked that neither the romance or suspense aspects were overplayed or lacking. Malerie and Ace were interesting characters and the fact that they didn't fall madly in love with each other from the moment they first met allowed their relationship to grow at a more natural pace. I really loved the mystery suspense aspect of the book because it made me think and wonder what the heck was happening and try to make sense of it all. By the time I finished the book, I was left with the possibility of predestined coincidence, so yeah, I was somewhere in the middle of being logical and believing in destiny. ^.^ All in all, Chasing Luck was a good read and I'm giving it four out of five stars. ♥

Reviewed on my blog, Becky on Books on 10/31/14.

Chasing Luck was an entertaining read with a likable hero and heroine. Ace (short for Achilles--how awesome is that?) and Malerie have a rocky start--which leads to much snarky conversation between the two. So fun to read! I've got about a page and a half of favorite highlighted lines, and they're pretty much all antagonistic we're-going-to-snipe-at-each-other-until-we-start-kissing dialogue.

Awesome.

Chasing Luck also has an intriguing mystery and a bit of a suspense plot--though be warned, it's easy to forget about the suspense bit until bam! it's right there in your face for the big finale. The mystery is pretty engrossing, especially since it too culminates in a pretty intense scene.

The romance is nicely done, and the sexytimes are pretty much closed door. No complaints here, because there's a lot of simmering chemistry and delicious romantic tension along the way. Ace is Mal's first, and there's a nice touch of sweetness right before the big moment--a blow-by-blow description is definitely not needed. Plus, I can pass this one along to Mini Moe #2 and still feel like a decent mother. ;)

Not everything is explained in the end--I'm not sure the mystery of the boxes needed to be, so I was okay with that--but some explanation for the uncle's decision to give them to her would have been nice. They apparently weren't originally picked with her in mind (or were they???), so it would have been interesting to know why he had them commissioned in the first place and what significance (if any) there was to waiting until this particular birthday to give them to Mal.

That's the only bit that truly felt like a loose end--though it did leave me curious (and there was a perfect vehicle for JT to explain it, but oh well...) it didn't make me feel cheated to not have it explained.

I really enjoyed Mal and Ace's story and am looking forward to reading Collin's (book two: Tempting Fate ). Chasing Luck was a quick and satisfying read.

This story is sweet and quirky. I am still trying to figure out the connection of the horrible incidents surrounding Malerie with the bombing, fire etc and the killing of JT and the collection in the basement. Not sure how they are connected and the connection of it all to the boxes but I did love the way it keeps you on your toes. Ace is a young man who had a hard life. In order to make it he became a security man. Now he is knee deep in helping Malerie and trying not to fall in love with her. He is a kind sweet guy who always helps those in need. Malerie is definitely in need.

She needs a friend. She needs comfort and understanding and she needs someone who will push her outside her comfort zone. She also needs someone who will be by her side and not because they are paid to be there. Ace is trying to help her but is also trying not to get close. Knowing she is in danger and wanting to be there is hard for him because he wants more. He wants to be all the things she needs but doesn’t want to get close. He doesn’t feel he deserves her and and help her if he does. He is also afraid of what she’ll do to him.

When things come to a head in Chicago and he opens himself up to her. Begins to trust her Malerie does something to hurt him. He feels that after all their time working as a team to solve the mystery of who is trying to hurt her she didn’t trust him and that hurt him. Malerie was trying to protect him but for him she walked away. that is until he realizes he loves her and only wants what is best for her. He can’t be without her and he understands that her pushing him away to try to keep him safe was her loving him. The two work together in a fun look at two people closed off and trying to open themselves up to new possibilities and to learn to trust someone in a quirky love story that involves bombs, fires, shooting, money and mayhem all around them. They meet some fun characters like Teddy who interprets the boxes and his dad for them. Collin her internet friend who helps them realize what they are to each other and billy the smarmy one who no one trusts but don’t know why.

A fun quirky story that has adventures, people learning to open up and trust one another, love that shows up in the strangest times and shows them that they are not alone and need one another and happiness in the least likely moments like when you are getting shot at.

What a brilliant story! This is one of my favourites for 2014! Stunning storytelling. Full review to follow <3 5 Stars!

edit.

I knew from the first page that this was going to be a book I would really enjoy. From the get-go, the writing style was fresh, mysterious and the narrative voice was strong. However as the story continued, I became more and more intrigued, excited and nervous of the fate of the characters I had come to care for so deeply.

‘Chasing Luck’ was a suspenseful and exciting read. Malerie was a fantastic heroine, who I loved to see grow throughout the novel, she had some issues which were justifiable but she tried her hardest to break out of her comfort zone as her possible fate began to hang over her like a black cloud.

Ace was a character that I really connected with. There was something mysterious about him that I really liked, and made the relationship between him and Malerie really great to read as he started to open up to her. He was such a kind-hearted guy who tried to hide behind sarcasm, so I really enjoyed reading chapters from his point of view because it showed another side to Ace than the side that he felt he needed to show Malerie at the start of the book. Ace and Malerie’s slow burning romance was one of my favourite things about this book, as I loved the chemistry they had from the start when they meet just before a shooting that sets Malerie’s unsolved mystery in motion.

I loved how Brinda Berry very subtly and cleverly entwined Malerie’s past, present and future, giving us little details and snippets at a time so that the suspense and mystery build to a pulse-pounding finale. The suspense in this story made it stand out amongst the many other books I have read in the New Adult genre, as it felt like an exciting adventure to read rather than just simply a good story. It was brilliantly paced, and the story wasn’t too much driven by the outside forces, but by the characters and their need to solve the mystery and protect those they love.

This was a stunning novel which I know I will return to re-read in the future. This is one of my top reads of 2014 so far, so I give it 5 stars and a definite recommended read.

Brinda Berry’s book Chasing Luck is the 1st in the Serendipity Series and told from two POV’s. Malerie Toombs has not had an easy life. When she was just seven years old she was the only survivor in a bombing at her mother’s work. She still suffers nightmares of losing her mother, the bombing itself, and the fear of moving on in life. After the loss of her mother in the bombing her Uncle JT takes her in, raises her, and tries to help her overcome all that happened.

On her 18th birthday while out to dinner with JT, she literally runs into a man at the bathrooms, Ace Sloan. “Can I have my phone?’ The other corner of his mouth joins the party and it’s a full-on grin. Dimples appear and they’re not the cute, little innocent boy kind. My stomach flutters like a moth caught in a jar.”

When she returns to her table, JT and she are soon joined by the mystery man from the bathroom hallway. Ace is a young man just 20 years old, working hard, trying to build a business, and suffering from his own loss. He is there to interview with JT about a security job. While at dinner, JT insults Ace who decides not to take the job and prepares to leave. When another tragedy occurs in Malerie’s life, Ace rethinks his decision and suddenly feels compelled to protect her.

Malerie believes that danger and trouble follow her everywhere she goes and that the people she loves will eventually become doomed. Malerie feels that by being with her, Ace is in danger and Ace feels that giving in to his desires goes against his ethics. As her and Ace set out to solve the mysteries they begin a friendship and can no longer deny their attraction. A gift of boxes from JT sends them out on an adventure that has romance, love, intrigue, and danger.

Brinda Berry does a great job of keeping the flow of the story at a steady pace. She writes with maturity, compassion and a lot of mystery. I would have liked her to delve into Ace’s background and history a little bit more since I was left with questions, but overall a book I couldn’t put down and enjoyed very much.

This novel was an amazing and really entertaining one and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I felt a really deep connection with the main character, Malerie, her character was really developed. Also, the writing style of the author was really beautiful and it flowed well. The plot of the story just jumped out and grabbed me.

I think that all of the characters in Chasing Luck were interesting, relatable and memorable but I have to say that I loved Malerie the most. She was my favourite and throughout reading this novel, an indescribable connection was formed, somehow linking me to this character. She is "lucky" or maybe "cursed" as was the lone survivor of a bombing that she lost her mom to and again, when she was shot during gunfire at a restaurant where she lost her uncle; she should have died but didn't. Because of all that she's witnessed, she has a perpetual fear of accidents which is why she's been homeschooled all her life and refuses to leave home to attend college. I don't know why but I just felt for this character, her problems seemed very real and her emotions just gave me all the feels!

The writing style of the author was concise but at the same time, it was extremely descriptive and it flowed really well. It wasn't long and drawn out, like most contemporary books are, it was perfect for the story and I really liked it. Also, I really loved how, at the beginning of each chapter, the author included a quote from Jelly Bean Queen, which was Malerie's favourite band. You guys know how I feel about chapter quotes, they are the best thing of life!

The actual plot of this story was so suspenseful and also very romantic, it had me hanging onto every single word. I enjoyed reading about Ace and Malerie's developing relationship and I can't spoil you guys but everything happens and there are so many plot twists and turns that you will never want to put this book down!

I decided to give this one five cupcakes, I thought that it was an amazing read filled with love and mystery and I would recommend it to just aboout anyone.

4 STARS!

Brinda Berry's Chasing Luck is the first book to the Serendipity series. Each book can be read as a stand-alone.

Brinda's book was absolutely amazing and kept me interested and excited throughout the entire story. The plot enticed me like no other mystery story. I usually don't gravitate towards mystery books, but Chasing Luck is a mystery book that I loved and every reader should read this book!

What I loved most about the book was that the plot was original, new, and exciting. Brinda incorporates Chinese culture, which I absolutely love! Being Chinese myself, this definitely interested me.

Brinda continuously had me at the edge of my seat wanting to know more about the mysterious murder plot on the protagonist, Malerie. Malerie is a very unique character who is haunted tremendously by her past and scared of the unknown future. She is a girl who has witnessed death at a very young age and is burdened with her fright of dark, small places. Then we enter Ace...

Man, Ace is a fine man if I say so myself. Tall, sexy, protective Ace will do anything to protect Malerie, *sigh*, even is she is a complete stranger to him at first. He soon starts developing feelings towards her, but restrains himself due to the fact that 1) she is his boss, and 2) she is totally innocent and OFF LIMITS.

Brinda portrays and develops both characters in a fantastic way. Both characters develop from secluded, frightened people to strong and brave characters that will do anything to protect each other, even if one of them has to sacrifice their own life to save the other.

Brinda writes a fantastic, amazing, and enticing read that any reader who is a fan of mystery and romance will love. I certainly loved it and cannot wait until I read the sequel, Tempting Fate, which portrays Collin's story!

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

Chasing Luck is a new adult romantic suspense with an intriguing premise and a rather sweet romance. Both main characters have deep emotional scars but somehow manage to find the courage to trust the other. The plot has shades of the paranormal in the rather prophetic boxes Malerie receives from her uncle on her eighteenth birthday.

While it would be hard not to feel sympathy for a character like Malerie, I never really connected with her. Sure she's been through a lot, but her coping mechanisms leave something to be desired. Now Ace, on the other hand, picked up the pieces of a messed up life and made something of himself. I think Malerie was blessed when he walked into her life.

The first quarter of the novel flies by as we are swept from one action scene to the next. The tone of the prologue, from seven-year-old Malerie's point of view was very well-written. About a third of the way through, the mystery is revealed, and the pacing slows down quite a bit. I enjoyed the paranormal aspect of the mystery and really wished that the author had delved a bit deeper into it. The romance between Ace and Malerie moved very fast which, given the extenuating circumstances, was understandable. I wasn't really feeling the love though-- the lust, the romantic tension, yes, but not the love.

There's a brief love scene in this this novel, so I would recommend it for ages 17+. It's an enjoyable read with one quirky character and one endearing character. I wish the mystery plot had been fleshed out a bit more. Though it was wrapped up at the end, I was left with some questions. That said, if you like fun romantic suspense, I think you'll enjoy Chasing Luck.

Everything from the characters to the plot did not work for me. Malerie and Ace were one sided and underdeveloped. I never connected with them and just kept wondering why I am reading about them throughout the entire book. Malerie suffered a tragedy when she was little being in a building that was bombed and losing her mom. But we never really get to see how that fully affects her. It is brought up when necessary almost like a crutch to explain why she has certain issues then forgotten at other times. Ace has issues as well that we never fully see and are underdeveloped as well. By the end of the book they are just brushed aside and what he was working for didn't even apply anymore without any real explanation. He is also a sexist ass.
Because women are like that, I reason. They decide on what they want to do and the hell with what anyone else wants or needs.
If she guesses, she’ll wonder why, and it won’t take long to conclude I’m afraid to be alone with her. What am I, a girl? I can control my physical urges and that’s all it is. Physical.
These are not qualities that are just in women. I didn't even know that anyone thought these are stereotypical of women. This is what Ace was like.

The plot like the characters was underdeveloped. The mystery surrounding the boxes was not compelling and did not feel complete. The mystery was dropped and then picked back up randomly. The romance was forced. There was little point to most of the secondary characters. Over all I don't think there were really any redeemable qualities when all of this is added together. There needed to be some serious plot editing in this book.

Malerie is a survivor, no matter what anyone says though she doesn't feel lucky and she has always wondered whether she should have survived that day when she was seven years old. The day she went to work with her mother and the building was bombed , killing everyone but her. The next chapter fast-forwards to her present day life and she is about to celebrate her birthday with her Uncle who gained guardianship of her when her mother passed away. At the table he presents her with a gift and also at the same time , Malerie meets Ace who is hoping to become a business client with her Uncle. Then tragedy hits again with a shoot out in the resturant , which again leaves her a survivor. When Malerie arrives back home , she discovers that the four boxes she has been given on her birthday each have a date inscribed on them. They are the dates of significant events in Malerie's life, ones that has had her coming out as a survivor. With the help of Ace, can Malerie track down the creator of the boxes as she believes that they hold the keys to her future ? What happens though, when it seems that someone is out to end her life and those around her are being hurt or dying ? Is Malerie just lucky or is there a reason she is still alive ?

This was a fast-paced book, that held my attention and when Malerie and Ace went on their journey to San Francisco , it made me want to keep reading to discover what truths the boxes held if any.

I am looking forward to reading more by this author in her "Serendipity Series".

Chasing Luck is a refreshing story to me because it's premise is different than what I have been accustomed to reading. Malerie tragically lost her mother in a bombing when she was seven. This event has had a terrible affect with her mental stability. Her Uncle JT had become her Guardian when her mother had died in the bombing.

On her eighteenth birthday her Uncle is gunned down in a restaurant and Ace who was there at the restaurant to do business with JT ends up becoming her bodyguard.

Malerie is an awkward girl because with the past events in her life she lives her life as a recluse. She has PTSD from the bombing and has had very little interaction with others and does not venture out very far from home.

Malerie on her eighteenth birthday was given boxes by her uncle but he was killed before she opened her present and he was going to explain something to her about her present but never got the chance. Her and Ace try to figure out if the boxes hold the answers to what has been happening to her and what the future may bring.

I enjoyed the book because the characters were developed well through the story and both Malerie and Ace have had some tough events happen in their lives. Will the relationship between Ace and Malerie remain a working relationship or will there be some sparks between them? This story will keep your attention and you will want to know what will happen next. I can't wait to read the next book in series but this is a standalone within the series.

My rating: 3.75 stars

When Malerie was only seven-years-old the office building her mom worked in was bombed. Malerie was the sole survivor, but losing her mom and being trapped in the rubble has left her with PTSD and some major trust issues. At eighteen, Malerie has only ever trusted her uncle. But when fate steps in, she finds herself thrust into the capable hands of Ace. While acting as Malerie's body guard, Ace finds himself struggling to overcome his own trust issues.

This was the first book I've read by Brinda Berry, but if the opportunity arose, I wouldn't be opposed to reading more. I had no problem staying invested in the story. There was just enough mystery to keep me wondering, and Ace was both sexy and honorable at the same time. While I often have a difficult time getting through contemporary books without getting bored, I didn't struggle even a little with this one.

Saying all that, this story wasn't without issues. There were times when the dialog felt stiff and fake, the action was occasionally rushed and confusing, and Malerie herself was a bit all over the place. Despite that, I didn't walk away from the book feeling like I'd wasted my time. Overall it was well-written and enjoyable, and a nice easy read to pass a rainy day.

While I get Malerie survived a terrible tragedy when she was young with the bombing that killed her mother, she was a whiny cry baby scared of her own shadow but yet did things without thinking that put her in danger. She annoyed the heck out of me. I really liked Ace but I was confused as to why he would refer to her as "baby girl" (although she was a baby) as a term of endearment before they even became involved, it made me throw up in my mouth a little. There wasn't enough character development for her uncle, JT. He's introduced to the readers and 5 minutes later he's killed! And then there's Billy. I always try to visualize the characters as I'm reading and in my mind I pictured Billy looking like Alfred Hitchcock or Mickey Rooney lol. But anyway, there's wasn't enough character development for him either. We meet him briefly, he's in & out of the story and then BAM! we learn he's the one after Malerie. Although I had that figured out early on but, um ok, whatever. And like another reader's review, I was confused about the mysterious boxes. The details about the boxes made me dizzy. Thinking I may have missed something about their connection to the story, oh well. This is one of those books where you don't necessarily regret reading it but you kind of wished you hadn't. Haven't made up my mind if I'll read the next book in the Serendipity series. Thankfully it is new characters which is a good thing because I wouldn't be able to stomach any more of Malerie

Where do I begin? I almost want to leave a simple review that says, "Trust me. Read this. NOW!" I don't want to give anything away because the book was so thrilling not knowing anything.

Chasing Luck is a suspense thriller romance that had me on the edge of my seat and glancing over my shoulder ever 10 minutes. There were so many twists and turns. The characters had depth, which we got to see with the dual point of view.

Nope, I can't give any more away. If you're a guy and considering reading this, but you're wary because of the romance part, don't be. There's enough suspense/mystery decoding the murders and what happened and what's about to happen that this will keep you entertained. If you're a woman, pick this up, and thank me later because who doesn't want to read about a hot guy who is protective?!

I love romantic suspense and I happen to consider myself to be a very good book connoisseur. I am busy most of the time so multi-tasking is a must.... alot of my reading takes place on the treadmill or elliptical machine at the gym. There have been few books that have kept me on those death machines for longer than my allotted time. Chasing Luck was one of them. I appreciate books written from both the male and female point of view. I have to admit, getting a peek inside Ace's head was definitely one of my favorite aspects of the book. Okay... Ace was my favorite aspect of the book. I LOVED his sense of humor and the fact that he was a genuinely good guy...plus being deeelicious didn't hurt either. Besides the romance, the plot kept me on the edge of my seat. Just when you think you may know whats up....you don't. For any music lovers....anyone that finds solace in lyrics and music...you will love one of the secondary "characters", Jelly Bean Queen....the band that speaks to Malerie's soul and carries her through dark times. So excited that this book is part of a series. Cannot wait to see what happens with other characters in the book...and of course check in on Ace and Malerie.

This book could be so good... the story line was very intriguing and the main characters, Malerie and Ace, were very likable but I kept wanting for more. I found myself constantly thinking after finishing a scene or a chapter: "This scene is done already? really?" Even though the writing was good (no spelling or grammar errors), I guess it felt kinda shallow to me and eventually this fact distracted me from the story. I couldn't fully connect with the characters and this probably had to do with the fact that the author didn't really gave them the chance to fully connect with each other... we can't just throw an "i love you" 3 quarters into the story and expect the reader to buy it... I'm sorry if I'm being a bit harsh, but I've been reading these half-finished books a lot lately and I guess I'm really frustrated!!
I've rated it 3 stars and not 2 because as I said before the story was very good and intriguing but I don't think I'll be reading the next book. Of course this is just my opinion and it doesn't mean that I'm right!

This book came so much than I expected.Great story, plot was different, though it's my first time to read suspense - love story and I fall in love with the characters, plot and story.

For Malerie, her character is unique, she is afraid to try many things because of her past but she change when she met Ace. I like the way she confess her feelings to Ace especially when she tell Ace that she wants him. I love that part so much.

I love Ace,he is one perfect gentleman, very loving and considerate too. He did not take advantage on Malerie's situation. He is attracted to Malerie but still he did what is right.

The box is intriguing and for me the author did not explain well the mystery behind it. Maybe she could add spices to the mysterious box.

I found some typo error and I hope the author can check it but over all, it's a must read story.

I'm excited for Collin's story and I know it will be as beautiful as this one.

Good job Brinda !!

I am not a fan of the whole instalove concept. I suppose it probably does exist, but this instalove happened well almost instantaneously. I may be a little jaded, I am woman enough to admit it.

So here we have heroine in distress...and the distress is rather unbelievable in and of itself. Her guardian hires a 20 year old security specialist - yes you heard correctly, 20 - and then is promptly killed leaving said 20 year old hot security specialist to take up the role of hero. He does so begrudgingly. Not because he doesn't think she needs protection, but because he is attracted to her, he loves her. Yep, folks, he loves her almost right away. Dangerous antics ensue, they get closer, she is in more danger, he saves her, they live HEA.

BUT - don't take my snarky comments as the final word, because I actually really, really loved this book..,almost instantaneously. The writing is clever, flows well and despite the odd storyline keeps you engaged and wanting more. So, I give this book 4/5

I want to start out by saying that Chasing Luck is not at all the type of book that I usually read, so I knew going into it that I was going to be a bit of a hard sell. However, this author was able to get me hooked almost immediately!

Though I have not had the experiences that Malerie and Ace had during their lives, the writer created the characters in such a way that I felt like I truly understood them and all that they had been through in their lives. The storyline was very good, and I especially liked the fact that it was told from both Malerie’s and Ace’s point of view. The transitions between chapters (and points of view) were very smooth, and I did not have any trouble keeping up with them (as I have had with many other books who try to tell a story through multiple character’s point of view.

This was a very good read, and I highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in suspense, intrigue, with a little romance thrown in for good measure!
