short: this should have been called "You In Danger, Girl".
long: i was totally in the mood for something light and a little cheesy and fun. i love cheesy rom coms. something with a title like Waking Up Married is usually right up my alley. I THOUGHT! this story would go something like this:
woman wakes up married to a guy she met in vegas.
they know they need to break up.
he woooooooos her.
it's super corny.
it's super cute.
there's a montage.
they realize they are meant to be together.
they kiss.
the end.
THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN.
in a nutshell, they get married. Megan wants to break it off because who wouldn't after marrying a stranger after being black out drunk, but oh no. Connor is not having that. he spends the entire book trying to force her to stay with him because they both want a family. and because he think she's hot. i understand the idea of a marriage of convenience, but to be honest Connor was just scary. every time he opened his mouth he said something manipulative and controlling.
Megan who is super independent and smart and seriously doesnt need this dude AT ALL, fights him every time, but then caves seconds later for no reason other than the fact that he was hot? or had money and sperm she didn't need? he deliberately goes against her wishes more than once. he refuses to agree to very simple requests and then he goes nuts when she disobeys him. i am over emotionally abusive heroes. for reals.
my other issue as with the writing itself. each scene seemed to be wordy with very little action. Connor thinks the same things over and over. also describing him as being "traditionally" handsome with traditional good looks rubbed me irky. as did the whole page where Megan reasons that he must be gay, because there's no way a man that attractive would want to be with her to have a baby. in 2013, hot, white, rich gay men have very little trouble acquiring babies. sorry.
i really wanted to love this this book, but i found myself gritting my teeth and shaking my fist in the air all the way to the end.

Yes, I do know this book is very predictable, and I do know that it's probably not very realistic because a guy like that really doesn't exist. But I don't care. I loved this book anyway.
Why? Because of the dialogue. That was the thing that won me over about this book. Kelly had a knack for writing some really good lines that had me grin like a fool, laugh out loud, and even for one tiny moment, make my eyes misty.
I mean, I'm reading a Harlequin romance. How complicated can it be. And there are so many Harlequinn and similar type of romantic comedies that you will run into those with the same story line. But what set this book apart was the writing.
MEMORABLE (EDITED) SCENES:
Both Megan and Connor are certifiably crazy - incredibly frustrating but at the same time charming. And Connor is too good to be true. He knew exactly what to say. And even when he didn't, his imperfections and flaws were also attractive. How did Kelly do that?!?
Like I said, it's not hard to guess what will happen. And I'm a sucker for cute, fun reads anyway. With this book, it was just a really entertaining experience to read such a delightful book.

This Book in one word-Beautiful <3
Initially when I picked this one up,I honestly expected it to be a light hearted/humor filled RomCom..almost a recycled version of the movie WHAT HAPPENED IN VEGAS...but boy wasn't I in for a surprise!
The first half the book,I'll consed was a drag.I hated Megan,as a character initially,her constant whining and sulking skills really put my patience to the test !!
If it wasn't for the fact that this was the only book on my e-reader during a family road trip I'm pretty sure this read would have turned out to be my first DNF.
But the 2nd half...Damn..I'm pretty sure I cried a whole bucket by the end XD
“Upturned face.Parted lips. The good-night kiss he couldn’t leave without.
Only, Megan’s lips were stiff and unyielding. She didn’t pull away. It might almost have been better if she had. Instead, she’d allowed the kiss to occur, taking it with the same cool detachment offered in her words.
Megan and Carter's story was definitely NOT an easy one,with both of them orphaned by their fathers for different reasons..insecurities came popping up like confetti every time an issue with love came up.
They both wanted senses and stability....love wasn't what they had signed up for..
“Marriage is an arrangement between like-minded parties. It’s a partnership, not a love affair. I never lied to you or kept anything of importance from you.”
What has me really, really upset is learning the woman I thought was so incredibly strong I married her on the spot...is actually
A quitter who runs from challenge,
A coward too afraid to even try,
A liar who makes promises she won’t keep and
A cynic too bitter to believe what’s right in front of her face. Is that real enough for you?”
That line damn..broke my heart.But I couldn't really stay mad at Conner either..I could actually understand where all his issues were coming from.I mean if you had lost your only family BECAUSE of love why would u want to kill yourself the same way?
Recommendation: After letting this lie on my shelf for so long,I think its safe to say.YES, I do have Cover-lust syndrome..XD (what ? I'm a med student everything is a syndrome to me ;D ) But seriously though guys, this book is defiantly worth reading....Don't let the cover cheat you out of a beautiful story too !

This is one of those books that makes you throw up in your mouth multiple times, and you can't figure out why you're still reading it after the first chapter...until you realize you've nothing better to do, it's a quick and easy way to add another book to your tally for the year, and oh yeah, you're a complete masochist.
I knew I was in trouble after reading the first couple of pages, during which I was assaulted with one adjective-riddled, anecdotal cliche after another. Anything that is supposed to be funny falls embarrassingly flat, neither character is likable in any way whatsoever, the story is tired, the plot devices weak and, I'm sorry, I am sick to death of reading shit like this; "This guy and all his good looks weren't a part of her plan. So what if he was handsome, or that she'd seen hints of the kind of humor she typically appreciated, or that she was, in fact, married to him? She'd had enough close calls in her life with the men she'd actually known, and she was through with the whole business."
That was the fifth page. Nothing quite like being subtle and leading your readers quietly around to the intricate workings of your characters. Nah, fuck that, let's just shove it all in their faces right out of the gate so that they have the entire fucking book to digest the fact that wonder heroine with the heart of a sadistic cyborg and the mind of an inebriated chimp has a plan. Seriously, I couldn't have figured it out without the author jamming it down my gullet like that, so I appreciate the candor.
On top of the terrible writing, the characterization is just sickening. Emotionally stunted Megan, in an attempt to prove emotionally stunted Connor will just end up leaving her, devises a plan to make him see how completely and totally undesirable she is as a partner by doing things like....making bad food and wearing a stinky face mask around the house. Like I said, the mind of an inebriated chimp.
Typical HEA ending, as well, one you could see coming 10,000 miles away. I'm OK with that most of the time, but on top of everything else, it was just another disappointment. And the whole thing was so...sappy! Just. No. If you seek an engaging romantic read, look elsewhere, this story is barren, bereft, and bewildering.

I enjoyed reading this one because of its conversational flow, you'll love the banter between the characters.
You'll know that Connor fell the moment Megan talked to him, he just doesn't know it yet.
It was sweet, instant and epic. Those two belong together.
“We’re good together, Megan. It’s not about glass slippers or fairy tales or love at any sight. It’s not about private schools or mutual goals or any of the other things we’ve talked about today. It’s about you and me fitting together. It’s about this feeling of rightness you told me about last night. The one I’ve had since I met you. And I keep seeing signs of it today. Tell me. Tell me you feel it too.” ~Conner Reed
And Jeff the Bestfriend was a definite scene stealer for me. Look:
“8:42 p.m....REED: Need you to go to Denver w me.
8:46 p.m....JEFF: In meeting. Give me 1 hr.

“Beyond reason or rationale.”
Oh, the lies we tell ourselves to justify the things we say, do, or feel. And the walls we put up.
“Ten minutes to convince you to give me twenty. We’ll see where it goes from there.”
I love Connor's cocky attitude. Yes, it can be a bit too much because he thinks he always gets what he wants (which I'm sure he does most of the time) and his no-strings-attached perspective pisses me off. But I do like his persistence.
“You’re a fantasy, Megan.”
I would never say Megan and Connor could hit it off. She's looking to have a baby because she's been hurt too many times, so she's thinking she doesn't need a man for it and is ready to get artificial insemination. And then Connor comes along.
"I’m the one trying to get you mad enough to fight back. To throw down your gloves, get up in my face and prove me wrong."
None of them is looking for love. In fact, they make a point of mentioning it - with some of their concessions making me laugh out loud. And then it kind of sneaks up on them, faster for one than the other, but it's been brewing there for both of them for a while.
"Nothing halfway was enough with you."
Look, I get it. Vegas wedding. People not looking for love. You're reading this and you're thinking it's nothing you haven't read before. What makes it different for me is the writing. I suppose this could have been a disaster in the hands of so many writers, but Ms. Kelly brings it home by making the characters as great as they can be, and the happily ever after (even if expected) as sweet as she always does.
Dislikes: her friends. They annoyed me to bits and seemed to be more about putting her down and pointing out her shortcomings than being supportive. Not cool, ladies!

Connor: Even though we've only known each other 2 seconds and we're both 3 THOUSAND sheets to the wind I'm thoroughly convinced that you're the woman I'm meant to marry because you throw your head back to laugh. I know that sounds extremely romantic but it's not because I don't believe in love. I only believe in making sweeping declarations to women I barely know, telling them to TRUST IN US.
Megan: This can't be real. I was JUST admiring your lazy smile and wondering about it's origins. I'll test you: if you don't balk at the yucky food I cook for dinner and my really icky and yet edible face mask then I'll know that I haven't fallen asleep after reading a corny romance novel.
Connor: TRUST IN US. TRUST IN THIS.
Megan: OMG I LOVE YOU.
Connor: I can't do this.
Me: DEAR LORD, I CAN'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My first try at the new Harlequin Kiss line. My second read by this author. I liked this book. It felt fresh and modern. It was one of those books where the story revolved solely around the hero and heroine's feelings and relationship. There was almost no description. Once the ocean was mentioned and some floor to ceiling windows but that was about it. There were a total of 5 scenes that included other people and they were extremely brief and the other characters were not important and were left totally undescribed. The one secondary character who seemed to be somewhat important, the hero's best friend, was never in any scene with both the hero and the heroine. that seemed a missing scene to me. I don't think he ever met her. There was a lot of telling to get to the next showing part and quite a bit of introspection, especially on the hero's part. It all seemed part of the author's style though so it didn't bother me too much.

When I was a teenager, I had this thing where I would go buy a giant stack of Harlequin romance books because the local Goodwill have them for $0.25. That's a steal! I love a great sale. Now, I didn't read them all and honestly I don't know where most of those went... But I found this one! I remember picking this book up in one of those giant hauls.
I liked this book! I often hear people talk down about these Harlequin collections but I always seem to find a great winner and a new author to follow. This book is sweet and it's what you expect - a man and a woman run off to Vegas and end up getting married. The issue? They didn't really know each other before. Drama ensues!
I liked this book but it's from 2012 so the views are a bit different. The guy might seem to pushy. Think the pushinesss of Fifty Shades of Grey and Twilight. She might seen a bit prude. You know what the early 2010s were like. I didn't judge the book for this. I just wanted a fun romance where I would get exactly what I expect. And I got it. It's predictable. It's cheesey. Although completely unrealistic and totally predictable,this was a fun and light read. Perfect to entertain on a lazy Sunday :)

There are some tropes that are fun but hard to write without having them seem contrived. The accidental marriage is one of them, but Ms Kelly pulls it off nicely.
Neither of them is looking for love. He wants a marriage that based on liking, shared goals and values without the mess of strong emotions. She's given up on relationships but wants children and has plans to get artificially inseminated. I've given this a C+ -3.5 stars
Scrolling through my Kindle to find a contemporary romance to read for this month’s prompt, I stumbled upon Mira Lyn Kelly’s Waking Up Married, one of the titles in Harlequin’s short-lived Kiss line (which is published as Mills & Boon Modern Tempted in the UK). I’ve read a couple of the author’s more recent titles and enjoyed them – funny, sexy and sweet, they’re written with a secure but deft hand and boast attractive principals and a strong supporting cast. I went into this one hoping for more of the same and found it, for the most part, but the story as a whole is rather let down by the hero who spends most of the novel trying to persuade the heroine into doing something she isn’t sure she wants to do.
Megan Scott is in Vegas with a group of (very bitchy) girlfriends, and they’re out partying before being bridesmaids at the wedding of one of their number the next day. Megan has decided that she doesn’t want or need a man – she has never fallen in love with one and doesn’t think she is capable of it – instead, she intends to fulfil her desire for motherhood by a visit to the local sperm bank.
Connor Reed is surprised – in a good way – when the gorgeous woman he’d noticed earlier as he’d walked by her table approaches him and asks him if he’ll walk her out of the bar. Her friends have been egging her on all night, and she won’t hear the end of it if she leaves the bar alone. It’s an odd request, but he agrees, and he and Megan end up spending the next few hours together, during which they really do ‘click’; Megan tells Connor a bit about her seeming inability to fall in love, which she puts down to the fact that her mother has been married seven times (and had boyfriends in between) and having no desire to follow the path of falling in love and being repeatedly left. As the night progresses, Connor becomes more and more convinced that Megan wants the same things from life that he does. Of course, they take in more than a few more drinks along the way, which is how Megan ends up with her head stuck down the great white telephone the next morning with the hangover from hell – and discovers she’s now Mrs. Reed.
In the spirit of ‘What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas’, she tells her new husband they made a horrendous mistake and that they should start divorce proceedings immediately – and is stunned when Connor tells her he wants their marriage to stand. Megan can’t believe what she’s hearing, but Connor persuades her to hear him out over breakfast. From what Megan told him the previous night, it seems she wants the same things from a relationship that he does:
“All the vital components that make a relationship successful, without any of the emotional messiness to drag it down. It’s about respect, caring and commitment. Shared goals and compatible priorities. It’s about treating a marriage like a partnership instead of some romantic fantasy. It’s about two people liking each other.”
– and he’s one hundred percent there for that sort of marriage.
Even though Megan has decided she’s probably never going to find ‘the one’, a marriage like the one Connor is suggesting sounds terribly calculating, and she’s not sure it’s what she wants for the rest of her life. But she agrees to a three month trial – although with no sex allowed - and moves into Connor’s house.
One of the things I liked straight away about Waking Up Married is that the ‘Oh no – we got drunk, got married and must get a divorce as quickly as possible’ trope doesn’t quite pan out that way, because while Megan and Connor did get married while drunk, Connor knew exactly what they were doing when they walked down the aisle. The trouble is though, that I wasn’t wild about the idea that he was aware of what they were doing while Megan wasn’t; she can’t even remember saying her vows, or much of what Connor told her the previous night. And while Connor is devastatingly handsome and extremely charming, he’s also incredibly manipulative; for the majority of the book, he’s doing his damnedest to convince Megan that what he wants is what she wants, too, which he does by being Mr. Reasonable and Mr. Unflappable, even when Megan tries everything she can think of to rile him or get him to give up – which seemed a bit mean considering she had actually agreed to give him and their marriage a chance to work out. Neither of them covers themselves in glory here, but fortunately, this stalemate isn’t allowed to continue and things start to look up – until Connor turns into an idiot not far from the end and only manages to turn things around in the last page or two.
Waking Up Married was enjoyable - but ultimately forgettable - fluff. I liked both protagonists, and the way Connor was so clueless as to the real state of his feelings about Megan was oddly sweet; he’s a nice blend of alpha and beta hero, a man who wants to protect and support his woman while also applauding her desire for independence. On the downside, her being independent means less aggro for him and none of those nasty romantic luuurve cooties, so it’s not an entirely altruistic trait. Ms. Kelly opts to give both characters a backstory that explains their reluctance to pursue love, but it’s very sketchy and could perhaps have been a little more developed; and I also have to admit that I wasn’t always comfortable with Connor’s more manipulative side.
I can’t recommend Waking Up Married without reservations, but if you enjoy rom-coms and are looking for an afternoon quickie (!), it might hit the spot.

Harlequin Romance conjures certain images in ones’ head, particularly if you or your mother read them in the 70s and 80s. You probably remember the red header, the schmaltzy covers, and the shamefully ludicrous plots. Harlequin has been desperately trying to put this image behind them by introducing something for every romance reader, (except the queer ones,) with 11 imprints and 21 “series”, each catering to a slightly different demographic. In short, glossy, flirty romances, but still with a strong happily ever after. Waking Up Married earns every single star by embodying that ideal...for the first four chapters.
I really liked Megan and Connor’s courtship in Vegas. It may not have been realistic, but it was smart and flirty and I felt a deeper connection between the h/h than just sex. Megan approaches Connor in a bar with a request. Pretend to leave with her to get her friends off her case. Connor agrees, but for added realism, asks her to join him for a drink first. From there, they begin a vodka soaked evening of flirting, gambling, waffles, and eventually a smoldering kiss. The next morning, they wake up, married, and while Connor remembers most of the evening, Megan’s next to a virtual stranger. She handles the situation rationally and far more calmly than I could manage. She wants to call a lawyer, but Connor still thinks they can make this work.
And then the story utterly falls apart. Despite being madly, obviously in love with each other, Connor and Megan both deny the possibility and approach their quickie marriage as a business merger. They agree to a three month trial and if Megan’s not the perfect trophy wife Connor’s looking for, she can leave. First, I had trouble believing a successful software engineer with a plan to become a single mother would even want to be Connor’s arm candy, and secondly, I really struggled with what Connor got out of the the relationship. There was a base inequity to the relationship that the author tried to explain, but never rang true.
Megan tries to push Connor away with bad food and a gross face mask, because she ALSO doesn’t understand why he wants her, while he pursues relentlessly, wooing her with gifts, conversation, and sex. Only after she falls for him does he take a step back and realize that maybe he’s gone too far for a business partnership. At this point he reveals himself to be an emotionally abusive sociopath, withholding all affection while Megan follows him around like a lovesick puppy. His ex conveniently turns up to narrate this and Megan, still desperately in love, flees. Even after she moves across the country, Connor keeps calling and turning up to try and convince her to come back. He refuses to take no for an answer, even after he realises that this behavior from his father is WHAT DROVE HIS MOTHER TO SUICIDE. Please pause and consider this. First he recognizes the fact that his father strung his mother along. He acknowledges that she tried to leave multiple times. He knows that her helplessness in the situation led to her death. He realizes he’s doing the same thing to Megan. HE EMBRACES IT.
Done.
In the end, his in-touch-with-his-emotions BFF helps Connor realizes he loves Megan too. He reads her email, because at this point, why not. He realizes she’s been approved for sperm donation. (Oh yeah, the blurb doesn’t tell you this, but the whole “contract” is about her resigning herself to being a single mom, but he’s got a pregnancy fetish and wants to impregnate her himself.) He flies to Denver, after she’s told him to leave her alone, confesses his love, says he’ll love the little bastard baby like his father never loved him, and, surprise! She didn’t go through with the sperm donation! They get back together and their HEA is that they decide to wait to have children.
There’s nothing fun or flirty in the last 175 pages. It’s two people with tragic, traumatic pasts struggling not to let their own marriage fall apart. To twist the knife that much harder, Megan’s ex-stepfather shows up just to not remember or recognize her. Megan’s friends are flat out evil and opening mock her failed relationships. She is so starved for an emotional connection that she would have stayed with Connor through all of the neglect and loneliness, if Caro hadn’t shown up to warn her of his MO. And then she still gets sucked back in. I want to take Megan to a nice counselor to work on her self esteem and maybe get her a puppy. Connor, I just want gone.

OK, so I read this comment in one of the reviews saying this was the perfect read for the ladies. Hey! Some of us guys like a nice romance once in a while. Or more than once in a while. Especially us married ones – we had to have done something right to get that ring on her finger. Of course, we’ll never admit to liking this stuff in public (and never, ever to another guy – our testosterone levels would automatically drop by 50% at least). We’ll put a cover on the paperback, and we’ll keep the Kindle close to our chests on the commute. If our wives get too close we’ll turn the light off on our reader and tell them we’re actually reading about the history of football or the French and Indian Wars or something manly like that. However – given the anonymity of the internet, all bets are off (that really isn’t me in my avatar; I just stole it from some romance novel cover model).
Anyway, now that that’s off my chest, on to the review:
I wanted light and fluffy. I expected light and fluffy. And I got light and fluffy. Until the last quarter of the book. Then it got pretty serious, because these two people have some serious history that they’re running from. Then it’s like a train wreck. But a good train wreck. Oh just read it – you’ll have fun. Look at that cover I dare – no double dare - you to tell me there won’t be an HEA here. Megan and Connor are really likeable, the plot, while predictable (and sometimes predictable is exactly what you’re looking for) is cute. I will say that Megan’s cousin and her two “best friends” are evil, and should be locked in a room together until only one is left standing. And then that one should just be left in the room.
Speaking of the cover: Megan looks like a younger Renee Zellweger, which is totally how I see her. However, Connor looks like Jon Krasinski (maybe that is him) from “The Office”, which is not how I saw the character (I think there’s some generic perfect rugged, dark haired early-to-mid thirties guy that we’re supposed to picture when we read most of these books. Unless he’s blond) at all.

Though all romances seem to fall into the realm of predictability, that doesn't make them any less enjoyable. If it ain't broke...
Not sure it was the book itself, of Harlequin's one-part-a-day-on-Facebook release of this that made me like it so much. I just couldn't wait for the next installment!
Still I enjoyed it. I like that they were already married, which is definitely a twist on traditional romance. And yet, the book still ended with a proposal. I liked the flashback aspects. And I love that the POV wasn't just Megan's. Really, this is more a 3.5 star rating than 3. Fun, sexy, sweet - one that I'll pick up again when in the mood.

Waking Up Married is a story about a couple who wakes up married in Las Vegas. Megan Scott is in Las Vegas for her cousin's wedding and meets a guy and gets drunk and wakes up married. Connor Reed is all for staying married. He wants a family but no romantic entanglements. He doesn't believe in love. Megan has major trust issues and, though she wants a baby, she doesn't want the headache of a husband.
It really was a cute and good story. I had to give it three stars though because I felt it dragged a tad. Still, I would recommend it to contemporary romance lovers.

My favorite trope in fanfiction is where people have to act super married because of reasons. Like, full on super duper we could fool everyone married. That's what I thought I was getting.
I got a really creepy guy who wanted to force the woman he woke up married to to keep their relationship going even though she was against it.

I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. I honestly wasn't expecting much. And I know that's horrible to say, but it's Harlequin, and my tastes tend to be a little off from their usual style. However, I think the fact that this was their new KISS line had a lot to do with my overall reaction to the story, the characters and the flow.
First, let's talk story. This isn't a new plot. However, it's one of my favorites when done right and when fresh. I think Ms. Kelly managed both with this book, and I loved the small details that made this a unique take on an old storyline.
Now, characters. I love, love, love, love, loved Connor. Everything about him (except his idiocy). He was sweet and loyal and flirtatious and sexy and strong and funny and and and... And then there's Megan. She was basically everything I look for in a heroine, and from what I know of the KISS line, that's something that is a requirement, and I, for one, couldn't be happier. I can't stand weak, whiny heroines. I like mine with back bones and sass and smarts, and Megan had it all.
The banter was fabulous, the flow was great, the arc wasn't rushed or trite or cliched...everything balanced nicely. I laughed and I smiled and I got that pit in my stomach when everything sort of fell apart. That's the mark of a good book for me. I mean, obviously this is a CR so you know there's an HEA, but how they were going to get there was unclear, and that made all the difference for me in going through the motions with these characters.

First, let's talk story. This isn't a new plot. However, it's one of my favorites when done right and when fresh. I think Ms. Kelly managed both with this book, and I loved the small details that made this a unique take on an old storyline.
Now, characters. I love, love, love, love, loved Connor. Everything about him (except his idiocy). He was sweet and loyal and flirtatious and sexy and strong and funny and and and... And then there's Megan. She was basically everything I look for in a heroine, and from what I know of the KISS line, that's something that is a requirement, and I, for one, couldn't be happier. I can't stand weak, whiny heroines. I like mine with back bones and sass and smarts, and Megan had it all.
The banter was fabulous, the flow was great, the arc wasn't rushed or trite or cliched...everything balanced nicely. I laughed and I smiled and I got that pit in my stomach when everything sort of fell apart. That's the mark of a good book for me. I mean, obviously this is a CR so you know there's an HEA, but how they were going to get there was unclear, and that made all the difference for me in going through the motions with these characters.

The title sums it up, WAKING UP MARRIED, and this is a trope that I love reading when it's done well. No worries here, as Ms. Kelly did a fabulous job of setting up the situation and then following through with the aftermath.
Megan's first thought upon waking up with a stranger is that she and Carter? Connor? need a divorce, like NOW.
But CONNOR has other ideas. He thinks that Megan is exactly what he was looking for. He wants a family, but he doesn't want love. He wants affection and fidelity. But love? Well, that just brings heartache. Surely it's better to have someone that you can count on, but not someone who is going to hurt your heart.
There was a twist later on that hurt my heart. Well done, Ms. Kelly!
Since this is a Harlequin, we all know how it's going to end up, that's why we read these books. But what a road these two had to follow. There is sweet, hot loving...and then that dose of drama to mess with your mind and to get your heart rate up. Again, well done!

This is my first Harlequin Kiss novel. This one I think I picked up in the kindle store for free. This is a light contemporary romance.
When Connor and Meagan meet in Las Vegas they get really drunk and wind up married. Connor thinks they should give the marriage a try since they both seem to have similar goals. They want children and family life without the emotional entanglements of being in love. So, they decided to give the marriage a trial run of three months.
Of course we know that this non emotional, don't fall in love, thing isn't going to work. So, we watch to drama unfold as first one, then the other has second thoughts and cold feet.
Overall not a bad read. I give this one a C+/B-.

Cute as fuck. Also angsty. Loved all of it, but would have preferred it if the conflict - "this needs to be a marriage without dangerous emotions like love" - had been wrapped in different language. All the focus on the specific word "love" sucked all the subtlety out of it.

3 cute,fun filled stars!
When I got this book it did remind me of What happens in Vegas at the start but anyways this was short and fun.I knew what would happen in this book well main bits anyways the title gives it away!
It all start off when Megan wakes up in a strange bed with a man and finds out that she married him. Connor remembers what happened the night before as for Megan everything is a little fuzzy and she doesn't remember why she would marry someone she had just met.She wants a divorce whilst Connor wants to make the marriage work.
I enjoyed the book I liked how it was funny and cute!I needed a quick book to read and this is what i picked out.There were parts that annoyed me like how distrustful Megan was,I understood her past made her how she is but C'mon now! Connor was funny but he never wanted to see what he felt for Megan he was too busy creating the perfect marriage.

Both Megan and Connor have past issues that they need to work on which causes the marriage to have its ups and downs.This book is in both Megan and Connor's POV which helps give you better understanding of both characters.

I was conflicted about this book. I liked it a little, but the hero made me crazy. (Huh, for once I dislike HIM and not HER.) He was much too "old-school" for my taste. I kept comparing him unfavorably with Edward from "Twilight." Sparkely vampire thing aside, both characters are too good looking for words, are implausibly wealthy, and both have an inexplicable connection with our virginal (or rather conservative) heroine. Furthermore, both men disregard our leading ladies' opinions on what's best for them, all in the name of protecting her. (Because she can't possibly know what's best for herself.) Both are manipulative and that is a major turnoff for me.
On the other hand, Megan doesn't ALWAYS let him get away with it. In one episode, she recognized that he was trying to use sex to manipulate her and she shut him down. She even moved out and went home to a different state when she recognized that he wasn't going to give her what she wanted. I know that's old school fair, but hey, it's harder to do in real life than you'd get from most books. So points for her.
Otherwise, there are a total of 5 other characters. 3 of them are catty, horrible harpies who tear her down, regardless of what she does. The fourth is a decent best friend to Connor and the fifth is Connor's assistant that gets a half-page of air time. I know it's only 194 pages and that doesn't lend itself to much character development apart from the main pair, but those characters were just plain awful.

Waking Up Married is a fun, sexy read. Megan has had enough of heartbreak and disappointment in life. She has decided to take matters into her own hands. During a not so fun bachelorette party in Las Vegas, she meets Conner. The man is a walking fantasy. A whole lot of alcohol and several hours later, Megan wakes to find out she married the delicious stranger. It then comes time for the “getting-to-know-your-husband date.”
I love this.
This, ladies. This.
I love this.
“’Conner!’Conner is one determined man. He knows exactly what he wants in life, and more specifically, what he wants in a wife. For Conner, Megan is the perfect package. He can be very persuasive when he wants to be. And when it comes to his new wife, he decides enticing persuasion is the way to go.

‘Wait…what?’
‘Say it again for me.’”

“It was as if he had seductive superpowers with his ability to infuse the most mundane household objects with deviant potential."This is a great story with more depth to the characters than I originally anticipated. It made me smile, made my heart ache, and gave me butterflies in my belly. I will definitely be checking out more books by Mira Lyn Kelly and Harlequin KISS.

I, wow, just wow.
In order to give a better review, I decided to organize what I hated into NOTES.
So I'm not going to cover the plot of the story as much as I will cover the characters, the events and just what was so unlikeable about this book.
Lets begin with Megan's "friends", just to get my bile about them out of the way so I don't have to bitch about them later. They are so unsupportive, unkind, catty and rude. Even Gail, Megan's supposed friend talks about her behind her back. They all act like high schoolers when they are supposed to be mature women. I don't understand why Megan would hang out with them! I wouldn't like being around people who talked about me behind my back, were rude in front of me and made me miserable. Doesn't Megan have any real friends she could talk to?
Ok, now that thats done, let me address why this plot could not work.
The number one reason, is because THEY DO NOT FREAKING KNOW EACH OTHER!!
Would you stick with this guy in the same circumstance, a man, while attractive is completely obsessed with you staying married to him, even threatening you to make you to stay with him.
If you have any sanity, then the answer is a firm NO!
I wouldn't want to be shackled to some random guy who I don't even know. And for good reason too! Connor is a nut. While he isn't lecturing Megan about why she must stay with him because they "work" (GOD, this book made me hate reading that reason, I swear if any guy I date says that to try and make me stay with him, I will punch him in the nose), he is using his body to seduce her into staying with him.
This could count as a type of abuse. While he isn't abusive in the traditional sense of calling her names or beating her, this counts because he's using his libido and her 'fantasy maiden' innocence to attempt to control and dominate her. He even does so in the early part of the book to attempt to make her do what he wants her to do. And what is abuse but a way to gain dominance over a person. He can't even accept it when she up and leaves him, he gets drunk off his ass and tries to fly to where she lives because he has a plan thats "better than her's." I'm sorry, but when the hell do you get to decide if her plan is worse than yours. Her plan may not work for you but it sure as heck works for her. If you really cared about her, then you would let her go like a good boy and try to make yourself better in the head so that you could have the option of loving someone someday without destroying them or yourself.
Now I would not have preferred Connor to have abusive tendencies at all. I would have liked to see Connor and Megan be normal people, instead of one of them having destructive control issues, and the other having deep set abandonment issues.
I will say a little more about Connor and be careful not to repeat myself.
The fact that Connor is supposed to be the hero in this novel scares me. Being with an abusive partner scares me in general and waking up with a guy like this would be a living nightmare, no matter how nice he seems. What kind of message is this sending to young women in general? That its fine to be with a partner who dominates you because he'll change?
No, there is no redemption for relationships like this unless a partner is willing to get better and overcome his or her demons to be a better person.
But even that seems unlikely, because right before delivering his big "I Love You" speech he shouts "I'll NEVER let you go" at her. Come ON dude! That behavior is part of the reason why she left in the first place.
Onto Megan..
She was mopey, annoying, clingy and overly dependent on toxic people. That is why she has no real friends and relies on women who have the mindsets of high-schoolers for support. That is why she did not leave the man who threatened her into staying with him until over half way through the book. And that is why, even when she realized that he had stopped giving her what she needed, she still stayed because she just is not a strong enough person to leave him. I'd hate to see how she would have been if she had had a child on her own. She would be too overprotective of him or her and in the end raise a wreck of a person with similar problems to her own.
I hated when she gave in before the big reveal with Caro's return and was like, "I can accept that he will never love me again, but I'm still willing to be in this relationship", and he sees it in her demeanor and is happy. I mean, that part made me enraged. I hated that Connor felt happy even though he was damning Megan to the same loveless relationship that his mother had, different circumstances but basically the same dilemma. He feels happy even though his happiness is because of her misery. Now, I'm sure that isn't what the character was thinking consciously. I don't think Connor was sitting there being happy because Megan was sad, he was happy that she gave in to him. I hate how she had to sacrifice her happiness and joy for someone who doesn't care enough to make her happy.
The way I see life is, we have one shot at living that we are all certain of, why spend any minute of it in a depressing situation that you know you could just walk out of? Megan, before finding out that Connor moved from Caro to her in the span of 13 days was glum, when after she found out, she was packing boxes through the night and was gone by the next morning.
While I'm laughing my head off at the sight of Connor walking into a bare house, at least she's able to make a move for herself when she needs too and escape from her own prison, no matter how gilded.
And for those who are wondering why Caro is. She is Connors former fiancee, and was everything that Connor wanted in a wife. Someone who is able to mix within his life and have one of her own, but have emotional boundaries and not fall in love with him. Connor is someone who eventually wants to have kids someday. (I laugh at the eventual shit he'd have gotten from his children who would probably rebel against him.)
So Caro broke it off and left, hoping he would chase after her, because if we know him, he must have lavished all sorts of attention on her, and made her feel incredibly important. So when she heard that he was married to someone else after 13 days, she must have wanted to ruin him, get revenge and maybe save Megan from making the wrong choice. I don't think she must have hated Megan badly, just pitied her. I think all of her rage was for Connor.( What was he thinking by the way? How did he think he could explain away a thirteen day bridge between Caro and Megan. He's just nuts. He is.)
Just getting the image of her crying in that big dining room kind of breaks my heart, she didn't deserve a guy like Connor, she deserves her own happiness. I don't think she was evil and I like the way she was handled at least. Ms. Kelly could have gone the typical route and have made her an over the top evil mega bitch, but she made her more subtle and while she still was out for revenge, it was heartbreaking and still happy for me to see her get some closure. If not revenge on Connor, at least peace for herself.
And heres why Connor's plan will NOT work, ever.
Children do better in normal family situations. And I'm not talking normal as in same sex couples, heterosexual couples, same race or biracial couples or any other couple that you can think of. I'm talking LOVING couples. Parents who love each other passionately and love their children fiercely. Children LIKE it when they see that their mommy and daddy are in love with each other, it makes them feel happy and as normal as the other children with loving mommies and daddies. Hell, even single parents do better raising children. Any parent who shows love to their children while also being a firm leader is a good one in my book. Not just this bland "we get along" shit.
I liked it when I saw my mom and dad kiss each other, it made me feel happy and I felt secure knowing that they loved being a part of each others lives just as much as they loved being a part of mine.
Now, when you set your child down and tell them that while mommy and daddy may like each other, they are not in love, what do you think your child will do. I'd probably cry. Or be sad, either way, children wouldn't like it. And they would notice.
Children, despite what others would easily believe are not idiots, they are intelligent because they pick up on things adults would not. And they study their parents and other adults very carefully and will pick up on things that you wouldn't think they would. So when they have parents with a marriage of convenience, I'm not too sure how well it would 'work' once the rebellious teenage years hit.
Personally I'd hate to be a child that was not born out of love, just lust and and I would waste no time grinding that into Connor's face once I hit 15, if I was his daughter in that situation. And I'd probably rebel more and more and struggle further and further out of his grasp and put the plan he made for me (if he made a plan for his wife, he definitely made one for his children) into disarray.
And I'd have the time of my life doing it.
Now, I'm not saying that marriages of conveniences always fail, I'm sure that there are cases where it has worked, but I cannot see how it would work in this setting.
The only good thing about this was the one text conversation between a drunken Connor and his friend Jeff. I could picture it so clearly in my head, especially at the end. The idea of a pissed off Jeff coming in on a drunk Connor at a bar just made me laugh. And the reason why I gave it another star was because this book made me lau- No wait, I'm not rewarding it for a single funny line!
I came into this book expecting a lighthearted comedic romance about two people falling in love with each other, despite being strangers, what I got was a story about a broken woman and a psychotic man who marry, and try to stick together despite the fact that it may be healthier for both if they divorced and saw separate therapists for several years.

Tredici giorni prima di conoscere Megan, Connor si lascia con Caro, fidanzata storica con la quale doveva sposarsi… in teoria, ma visto che lei voleva di più di ciò che lui le avrebbe mai dato, lo ha lasciato.
La notte in cui i nostri protagonisti si incontrano, parlano per ore e si ubriacano talmente tanto che il mattino dopo (il giorno del matrimonio della cugina), Megan non si ricorda nulla. Sorpresa! Ha dimenticato che lei e Connor si sono sposati in una cappelletta di Las Vegas e che lui le ha donato una fede di platino. Lui miliardario e lei vive di quel che guadagna.
Al risveglio, dopo ore a cercare di capire cosa fare, Connor tenta di convincerla a rimanere la Signora Reed, ma Megan non ne è sicura.
Le promette quel figlio che desidera tanto, una vita degna di essere vissuta, soldi e bei vestiti e in cambio lei dovrà un paio di volte a settimana accompagnarlo ad alcuni eventi come sua moglie.
Tutto senza alcun impegno affettivo perché ha capito che Megan è una ragazza indipendente, forte e non ha proprio bisogno di innamorarsi.
Dal momento che anche lui è così, le sembra la cosa migliore.
Una moglie, figli e una vita bellissima senza coinvolgere i sentimenti. Lei riflette molto e gli consente tre mesi di prova.
Che accade poi?
Va tutto bene, sono complici, amici e si divertono e tanto che lei gli si concede.
Una sera però, dopo due mesi, Megan gli chiede il figlio a cui non vuol rinunciare e Connor intuisce che è cambiato qualcosa…
Capisce che si fida totalmente di lui da essersene innamorata. Così cerca di toglierla dall’imbarazzo e decidono di aspettare ancora un mese per il bambino.
Una sera, a un evento incontrano Caro, che punta a umiliarlo e dice a Megan che lui non si innamora, non ce la fa proprio, ma vedendola, intuisce che invece la moglie ne è innamorata. Scoppia la bomba e la coppia litiga e nella notte lei torna a Denver.
Dopo qualche giorno lui va a cercarla, resosi conto che nonostante gli sforzi e le grandi parole, si è innamorato di lei…
Cosa posso dirvi di questi personaggi, vediamo… allora, mi è piaciuta Megan perché è sempre stata all’altezza della situazione nonostante fosse una ragazza con un impiego normale rispetto a lui. Non si è mai sentita da meno, è sempre schietta, dice quel che le passa per la testa a rischio di fare figuracce. Connor invece è un ragazzo che pensa a tutto tranne che all’amore ma quando incontra lei diventa nuovamente quella persona dolce e premurosa che era un tempo. Ok, è per uno scopo ben preciso, e forse lui è un po’ scontato, ma sempre divertente quando ha a che fare con Megan.
Probabilmente vi ho raccontato parecchio, mea culpa, ma vi consiglio questo romanzo per una lettura leggera, romantica, a tratti divertente, per le ultime ore da trascorrere sotto l’ombrellone.

Una sera, a un evento incontrano Caro, che punta a umiliarlo e dice a Megan che lui non si innamora, non ce la fa proprio, ma vedendola, intuisce che invece la moglie ne è innamorata. Scoppia la bomba e la coppia litiga e nella notte lei torna a Denver.
Dopo qualche giorno lui va a cercarla, resosi conto che nonostante gli sforzi e le grandi parole, si è innamorato di lei…
Cosa posso dirvi di questi personaggi, vediamo… allora, mi è piaciuta Megan perché è sempre stata all’altezza della situazione nonostante fosse una ragazza con un impiego normale rispetto a lui. Non si è mai sentita da meno, è sempre schietta, dice quel che le passa per la testa a rischio di fare figuracce. Connor invece è un ragazzo che pensa a tutto tranne che all’amore ma quando incontra lei diventa nuovamente quella persona dolce e premurosa che era un tempo. Ok, è per uno scopo ben preciso, e forse lui è un po’ scontato, ma sempre divertente quando ha a che fare con Megan.
Probabilmente vi ho raccontato parecchio, mea culpa, ma vi consiglio questo romanzo per una lettura leggera, romantica, a tratti divertente, per le ultime ore da trascorrere sotto l’ombrellone.

Vi que Mira Lyn Kelly, como tantas otras, había empezado con harlequines. Aproveché la oportunidad de que este andaba en KU para probar a ver qué tal se le daba el formato. Bien, correcto, perfectamente anodino. No es de esas genéricas que tenga nada especial. 👎🏼 Megan y Connor se despiertan casados. Ella ha bebido tanto que no recuerda ni la boda. Hay que entenderlo, están en Las Vegas. Resulta ser un tipo guapo y millonario, porque claro, si metes la pata casándose totalmente borracha, no va a ser con un tipo fondón que no tiene donde caerse muerto. Que esto es Romancelandia, queridas.

A typical romance where boy meets girl(in Vegas), the two of them get drunk, and end up married..
In the morning, the guy (Connor) is pretty happy with the arrangement...the girl (Megan) who doesn't quite remember why she agreed to such a preposterous thing, is on the edge of a nervous breakdown, and wants nothing more than an annulment.
Here's the thing: This is well written, it has a nice flow, the characters are interesting, and basically one can read this in one sitting. It starts out funny, the characters have a pretty good chemistry...and i could go and on, if i were a different kind of reader.
But i'm afraid i'm not the intended reading material for this kind of book.
You know when you're reading a romance that's supposed to be romantic (and leave you all smiley and happy?) but instead after awhile the only thing you see is a train wreck waiting to happen?
Yeah, that's me...
Relationships are hard by nature. But when an author adds some heavy emotional baggage to both the main characters, and then expects that the readers swallow all the perfect and neat ending, things can complicate themselves.
I liked that the author tried to wrote Megan as this fairly intelligent woman caught in a strange situation and deciding to make the best of it. But, i couldn't help feeling that Megan's abandonment issues were neglected in the face of Connor expectations. He calls her a liar and a coward (because she doesn't want to go through with the marriage) disrespecting what she went through. And that does she do?
She gives in to him and the marriage she thinks he wants..
But Wait, he has some issues as well, and it turns out that love isn't in the picture.
He's the kind of person capable of stop feeling whenever he wants( the expression manipulating bastard could also be used).
Of course something happens to make him see THE TRUTH..but by then, i really couldn't care.
Problems and fears don't disappear in a few weeks. So if you want us to believe in HEA while reading these romances, better thread lightly on the drama department...

I just wish author's would stop writing these guys as hero material. I don't care if they're rich and good looking. They're controlling, disrespectful of the other one's needs, and they don't respect boundaries!
If we were talking about real life, i would say: Run!
That, and don't marry strangers...

Cute :) Not quite a hot and heavy, but neither is it a mushy mushy romance. Do you know what I mean? A good classic Saturday afternoon book. I finished Waking Up Married in a afternoon and finished the last page with a smile on my face.

Yeah, that's it.
Hahah! Adorable romance that started out more so as an arrangement for partnership in which there would be no "love", but an easy and equal partnership between a man and a woman resulting in a family with children. It sounds clinical. Of course it does! It was the man's perspective! Of course you can imagine, it does not stay that way. ;)
I mustn't give anymore details on the front for fear of ruining a cute story for everyone.

A word - Work a holic. Not to mention, when he sees our girl, he sees her more like a walking uterus than a woman. Slightly disturbing...
However in the end he redeems himself by
