Blood Knight #2

Blood Knight: Scepter of Bone

Rate this book
A werebear at wits end? A necromancer in dire need? A bone scepter the vampires will kill for? Send in the blood knight to sort this mess out!

J.B. Clarke and the lovely ladies of Broken Fang have won their first victory against the vampires who secretly rule the world. But their fight is far from over. To defeat the vampires once and for all, they’ll need to rally powerful allies to their cause. But before they can do that, they need to make a name for themselves amongst the hidden underworld of monsters, mages, and vampire slayers.

Clarke makes a deal with the Coven of the Ashen his services as a blood knight in exchange for a steady stream of work. The coven agrees and assigns him to Ixia Grey, a young witch and aspiring esports player. Ixia proves to be a deft hand at lining up jobs for Broken Fang, and Clarke soon finds himself up to his elbows in monsters to slay—

—and fat paychecks to earn.

But all is not well in the city of Chester Creek. The vampires have unleashed a terrifying new monster, one more powerful and deadly than anything Clarke has ever faced. A ghostly killer now roams the shadows, an embodiment of fear and death that shreds its victims’ minds as it drains their bodies.

But Clarke is a blood knight, heir to the greatest line of vampire slayers who ever walked the Earth, and he will face the coming darkness no matter what form it takes.

I'm having an existential crisis. I feel like I need to go away and examine what I'm doing with my life when I'm writing 60-second reviews for self-published kinda-trashy smut (for free). But they say art makes you feel and this thing certainly made me feel SOMETHING (mostly irritation) and I need to unpack it somewhere.

In case anyone missed the memo, we ALL know what kind of book the antecedent was. This is still one of those. The book picks up immediately on the heels of the first one, which is nice, but still has and incredibly wobbly sense of time, which is not nice. Luckily, the baby momma side plot that infuriated me in the first book and through the first half of this book does get resolved. Put that in the nice column. But a lot of my notes are me screaming at the MC to just call the damn girl because she could probably help with half the problems in the first part of the book.

I think it's a symptom of American politics in 2025, but the way the main character insists (many times over the course of this book) that the best way forward is to reveal the supernatural to all the normies and overthrow the vampires just really gives me heebie jeebies. This is a hardcore Matrix situation. Most everyone seems to be happily and obliviously living their lives. And some COLLEGE KID thinks he can dictate to BILLIONS how they can live their lives? It's giving dictator vibes. Personally, I think it's a terrible idea. Maybe get the vampires to the bargaining table or something. There's also some weird semi-racist undertones vaguely resembling anti-Semitism about vampires going on and I don't think I like it much.

I'm really struggling to decide if the author is self-aware and if this series is satire or not. On the one hand, I read a LOT of self-published books and it's usually pretty common for the kind of over-the-top Scooby Doo bullshit (TM) that takes place here to show up. On the other hand, the writing is noticeably getting better, and outside of fight scenes it's pretty sensible even if it's referential. But as soon as a fight happens it's like the author's MK Ultra conditioning kicks in and I'm reading a script for an episode of Power Rangers in the 90s. Half the fights are the main character yelling random obvious stuff at the girls and/or the bad guy and it is painful. But that makes me think that the author is being intentionally satirical. Six up, half a dozen down I guess.

Last I want to point out that this whole book made me wonder if I have a female twin (clone?) somewhere because the Venn diagram of jokes and references in this book and the things I'm into is a circle. And Brooke needs to decide if she's a wolf or a golden retriever. Or Malinois. She does the teeth clicky thing all the time. But it's weird a werewolf likes squeaky toys (again, this may be self-aware, but may also be unintentional satire).

The Manchurian Candidate trigger word of the week is: excessive exclamation marks(!). And can we abandon the word "gonad" to history please?

I received an eARC of Blood Knight Scepter of Bone in return for my honest review. First things first. This is the second book in the Blood Knight series by Edie Skye. It is a spicy harem urban fantasy, (erotica) so if explicit sex bothers you save yourself the outrage and read something else.

I highly recommend this book, which is set to be published tomorrow (July 18, 2024), but I suggest that you start with the first in the series (Blood Knight Vampire Slayer). These are fast reads, so that should not be a problem.

From the very first page, the reader is "sucked" right into the spicy action. The sex scenes are well written, and do what they are supposed to. There is a lot of humor, warmth and love written into the relationships. The characters include Clarke, a blood knight who leads the Broken Fang in their quest to rid the world of vampires. The ladies of the Broken Fang are Ashley, an angel like character, Emma, a succubus, Bridget, a werewolf, and Sammy a slime girl. The variety of characters provides a mix of capabilities in their fights with vampires and demons, as well as providing a variety of kinks. In this book the gang becomes more connected to the demihuman community, especially partnering with a coven of witches.

The story pulls from and references significant amounts of gaming and anime culture, but you do not need to be an expert in these subjects to enjoy how it fits into the story.

What makes the Blood Knight series more than well written erotica, is the story line that is working through the series of a miscellaneous group of female college students that decide to take on and destroy a number of vampires, once they discover and recruit their Blood Knight. The fight scenes are well written and engaging. The use of magic and spells should be familiar to gamers. The book COULD stand on its own without the spice, but it would be a lot shorter. The author clearly had a lot of fun writing this book, and the reader will have an enjoyable read. The cover art of all of Edie Skie's books provide a provocative pose of one of her characters in each book.

For readers that come specifically for the harem aspect of the stories, Edie Skye thoughtfully provides a list of some of her favorite harem books that you can read while waiting for the next Blood Knight book to come out. But first check out her other series, including Titan Mage.

This sequel takes place about a month after the first book ended. In the first book Broken Fang manages to take out four vampires that were around the University. One was the calculus teacher, another was the librarian, and another was the Football coach. The fourth was a surprise. A new woman is introduced to the group Broken Fang. She is a goth witch names Ixia and she is pictured on the cover. She belongs to a coven with her mother and her two sisters.
There is one line in the book that really made me smile. Ashley the angel kisses Clarke and he is so overwhelmed by her power that he promptly loses consciousness, when the other women bring him around all he says "My God, it's full of stars." It is a reference to a line spoken near the end of 2001: A space Odyssey movie. I don't imagine many people will get that reference, but I loved it. The author is quite often bringing in references to Japanese anime and other movies. I don't mind looking up what I don't know.
In this movie the group has decided that they need help to find work and they have made a deal the local coven to bring them work. The partnership comes with a deal to preserve the Blood Knight race and Ixia Grey becomes the mother of Clarke's baby. However a new threat has come about; a unknown vampire and a Terrogeist are threatening the Broken Fang. This threat takes all the Broken Fang and the Coven can take.

I am enjoying this series more than I thought I would, I have to admit. It's light and fun and sexy, but there's some good world building and creative interactions between the characters. Plus, I'm a gamer myself, so that being an element of the stories is fun for me, as well.

Clark and his monster-girl harem are fighting the war against the vampires that secretly control society. But they need to find out more about the hidden world, which requires resources and contacts they don't have. So they start billing themselves as troubleshooters for hire, and start trying to make new relationships. It's rough going at first, but they begin winning people over.

They meet some desperate were-bears, a necromancer with a problem, and a new and terrifying kind of monster to fight. Can the members of Broken Fang stand together to beat their new foe? Will Ashley the amnesiac angel start to remember more about why she's here? Can the harem work out a schedule to make everyone happy as to who is sleeping with when? And will their harem grow?

There's lots of action, both in combat and in the bedroom. If "spicy" isn't your thing, you're probably not going to care for this. Otherwise, it's a lot of fun, and I'll be on to book three shorty.

I wasn't thrilled with book one, and I still wouldn't say book two was fantastic, but I did enjoy it significantly more.

Good points: I liked the new love interest, and I thought the overall plot was decent and worked well as a self-contained story.

Bad points: And there's still a bit of a mismatch between the occasional bursts of humour and the very grimdark setting.

If you got through book 1, I'd recommend reading book 2. But if you struggled with book 1 and are wondering if book 2 is a major improvement, the answer is "no really".

I was a bit hesitant to read this series due to the NSFW warnings and a past experience with an author who abandoned plot to write scenes. However, this book does have a plot that moves along quite well. The scenes don't overwhelm the story.

There are also a LOT of puns and jokes scattered through the book, including a description of politicians that I particularly liked.

I look forward to the next book in the series.

A powerful alliance!

Clarke and his harem of hot monster girls have freed the University of vampires. They are dedicated to freeing the world from the reign of vampires but can't do it alone. They need allies to help in the fight. Meanwhile, a new danger arises!

This book is even better than the first one! The harem is steamier. The villains are nastier. The action is crazy good. I received a free advance copy but my review is honest and voluntary.

A nice next installment

Overall solid story like the first. While some stuff comes easy to the group (money) other things they do have to work for which is nice, it shouldn't be a cake walk. Admittedly I did put it down a few times, but overall it's pretty solid. While I still like the Titan Mage series more, this one is coming along nicely in its own right.

The power progression stopped for this book, using only temporary or otherwise single-use items (like bullets) to slay the bad guys, which feels cheap to me. I would prefer to see some real progression of their skills and abilities. I hope the next one is better, and there's less undead. Pretty tired of the undead plots.

Fun! Book 2 was Great

Okay, this is an interesting and fun series that will keep you turning pages ! The character development is fun, so all the harem personalities don't run together. There is action, adventure and enough spicy bits to make a reader happy without interrupting the story. Looking forward to the next book!

Scepter of Bone is the second book in the blood knight series. At first I thought the book was a decent improvement over the first. the characters seemed less one dimensional, the villain was more interesting, it focused more on the action and less on the romance, and they added guns. and then the author somehow ended the book the exact same way as book one. Still plus 1 star for adding guns.

Entertaining return

Again, the details and specifics for the nerd hobbies are a delight to those within them. Another good entry with characters that are growing reasonably instead of just overpowered out the gate.

This is a fine fantasy harem adventure novel. It is well written and edited. I will especially like the witch mom. I anxiously await the sequel.

Pretty good too much combat

Decent book, good flirting and dialouge but the battle scenes can sometimes feel to long for my tastes but are still stylish and well thought out.
