i went in thinking it was a crime drama like sherlock holmes focusing on the legal aspects of the story. i was unable to understand what the hype was about and was seeing comments like it gets good in the end or it starts to all make sense in the end. when i reached the end i was left underwhelmed thinking 'is this it' and was pretty disappointed with the book. then i watched a lecture by Michael Katz on youtube on the translation of this book. turns out the title is mistranslated as crime and punishment instead of sin and repentence. i was unaware of dostoyevsky before this and i went in as blind as i can yet it took me a lecture by a translator to make me realize how important this book is. all the psychological developments that i took for granted were at least partly inspired by books like these. that is when i learned about the realistic portrayal of human condition.
even though my start with dostoyevsky was rough i enjoyed the book on re-read while simultaneusly listenting to the full cast librivox recording. the voice actors have done a great job in the audiobook. marmeladov is my favorite character although i liked every single character. do not buy this version of the book it is the worst translation of sin and repentance to ever exist.

I procrastinate a lot so I can relate a lot. The way Dostoyevsky describes the situation is amazing. He writes in a way which seems philosophical and as long as you are reading you sort of agree with him.
Reading this book is an experience which has only two outcomes either you love it or hate it there's no in between.
As for me I love this book as it affected me in a way I can't quite put in words.
