Sir Chris Hoy knows better than most how life can change in the blink of an eye.
In elite sport, the margin between victory and defeat is miniscule, and the pressure is immense. Chris has built a glittering sporting career on understanding these how to feel for them, how to cope with them, how to make them count.
Last year, he faced another life-changing moment. He found out that the ache in his shoulder was in fact a tumour, and that he had Stage 4 cancer.
He will be living with this disease for the rest of his life.
In this memoir, Chris shares the next phase of his extraordinary life with exceptional bravery. He looks over the challenges he has faced thus far, and the ways he has taken them on. With his wife Sarra and their young children by his side, he shares how he has used these experiences to find ways to focus on the moments that matter, showing us how to do the same.
Sir Christopher Andrew Hoy is a former track cyclist and racing driver from Scotland who represented Great Britain at the Olympic and World Championships and Scotland at the Commonwealth Games.
On 18 April 2013, Hoy announced his retirement from competitive cycling. He said he was very proud to have taken part in the transformation of the sport.
Sir Chris Hoy’s memoir is a masterclass in courage, perspective, and sheer determination. From the track to a life-changing diagnosis, Hoy’s story is a heartfelt reminder that even in life’s darkest moments, there’s still light to be found.
Written with raw emotion, honesty and warmth, this is much more than a recounting of his battle with Stage 4 cancer. It’s a tender tribute to his family, especially his wife, Sarra, and their children—a love letter that had me reaching for the tissues more than once and totally understanding where he was mentally. Hoy’s ability to reframe an unimaginably brutal diagnosis into a call to cherish life’s fleeting moments is inspiring.
The blend of raw vulnerability and quiet wisdom makes this a deeply personal and universal read. Whether you’ve faced cancer yourself or felt the weight of life’s challenges, there’s something profoundly uplifting here.
Hoy doesn’t sugar-coat his reality but doesn’t let it define him. He’s an athlete, a husband, a father—and now, a teacher of resilience. If you need a dose of hope and humanity, this book will give you just that.
What an extraordinary man, and what an extraordinary life, and with hope, rebellious hope may it continue. 💛
Wow! What a amazing person and an amazing wife. To have to go through such a devastating diagnosis for each of them and still coming out positive the other side is truly remarkable.
Everyone, regardless of what you are going through, physically or mentally, should read the last chapter and take comfort from it. I'm sat here, just having finished it, in floods of tears. Truly inspirational.
I’m overcome. Lump in my throat, tears in my eyes, full of admiration. What an amazing man Chris Hoy is. Yes an Olympian with a record number of medals but this story focus’s on his underlying strength, resilience and mindset when diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in his late 40’s in 2023. Gosh he’s nailed life and how to live it even when shit hits the fan. The story is written in a very humble manner and he is overwrought with thanks for science, the love of his family and friends and the beauty of the world. He has shared so many gifts with me via this book and I can only wish that he can continue to live an engaged and fulfilled life for the remaining time he has.
Searingly honest account of Sir Chris Hoy's reaction to his cancer diagnosis. Yet it is ultimately heartlifting and inspirational. Painfully raw at times, Chris uses all his resources, both inner and those folks around him - this is a story of incredible love too.
At times heartbreaking, yet equally heartwarming. An astonishingly raw, open and honest view into the personal challenges of one of the greatest Olympians.
Having gone through cancer (stage 3 Bowel) 3 years ago it was great to learn about how another got to grips with the challenge… albeit CH is stage 4… the journey and mental and physical torture for self, family and friends was similar and the positive mentalnattitude required. I hope i can do the Tour de Four with him when arranged.
Raw, honest, inspirational, made my laugh in places and cry in others.
I have heard the words “I’m sorry to say it’s cancer” but in very different circumstances and for me with a very good prognosis - sections resonated with me as a result and others empowered me to look at things differently. I am glad I read this book as it really helped me put things in perspective.
Poignant such a positive outlook considering that Sir Chris Hoys career was such a success and now es facing stage 4 cancer with the same determination simultaneously he could teach us all a lesson to live for today and be thankful for what is happening in the here and now as nobody has no control of what’s to come tomorrow it’s a true encounter of a father facing incurable cancer and he makes nod too how the simply things matter hugging his children this book made me laugh and cry it’s made me want to continue to follow his and Sarah journey as they continue with their health battles as I found the book such an inspiring read I wish Chris and his family well
Sir Chris Hoy is someone I have watched on TV as one of Great Britain greatest cyclists. He is a great man and his biography is an eye opening book about his career and his treatment around his stage 4 cancer. Short book but a great read. Stage 4 cancer shouldn’t be a death sentence and his book has made me realise that. Thank you for being so open.
Chris’ diagnosis of stage 4 cancer is the driver behind this book, and despite this being heartbreaking news, I found this book also uplifting as Chris responds to the news and tries to find a new meaning in his life.
Raw, honest, tragic and uplifting in equal measure. A huge lesson for us all on the never give up attitude and facing our limited numbers on Earth with positivity and a smile despite dire circumstances. I took many lessons from this book.
Heart-wrenching, warming and everything in between. Chris Hoy writes with such an inspiring outlook on life despite his devastating diagnosis. A real tear-jerker that reminds you just how precious life is. Beautifully written.
A raw, joyous and heart breaking read. Chris Hoy talks of his career, his family and his terminal cancer diagnosis. It is direct from the heart. There's lots of tears but also many funny and uplifting moments. A book that will stay with you for a long time to come.
Very raw and revealing book which will be especially helpful to cancer sufferers. It almost feels like you are intruding on a personal memoir written for his wife and children though.
Hard to put down once you start it - I read it in a day.
Emotional start, and I found myself tearing up countless times while listening. I challenge anyone to not do the same. I have admired Chris Hoy for years, especially around London 2012. He is an inspiration and I was devastated to learn of his diagnosis. When I discovered he was not only releasing this book, but that he'd be narrating the audiobook, I knew I had to get it. What a truly remarkable man, and I cannot fathom the bravery and resilience of him and his wife over this last year. Have tissues at the ready, but this is an absolute must read. Book of the year.
An inflight read that had me in tears. The challenges that Sir Chris Hoy and his family have faced are so daunting but their strength and resilience is awe-inspiring.
Wow just wow, this is one amazing human with one amazing wife. Positivity in the face of terminal cancer a lesson for us all to make the most of everyday.
A very honest and open insight into the mind and life of Chris Hoy. Such a shock for someone so fit, healthy and successful to get cancer, but just proves it can happen to any of us. Read as our book club book for this month, for genre biography. I really enjoyed the book, probably helped by the fact I'm a big fan of Chris Hoy.
All That Matters by Sir Chris Hoy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A very emotional and heartfelt book about a devastating cancer diagnosis. Emotional but also uplifting and full of hope.
The shock and despair of a Stage 4 cancer diagnosis is written about so honestly in this book, yet the overwhelming message is one of positivity and resilience - a very inspiring read.
Sir Chris Hoy is simply the best. What an inspiration he is to deliver an upbeat message in the face of adversity. Relatable to so many, this book will help people and he has a Glasgow to Edinburgh cycle planned too in which I plan to partake !
Chris Hoy is not only a track legend, but a highly competent communicator.
His memoir inspires hope for the future and offers a simple and mindful approach to dealing with challenges in the present moment. I am impressed at the fullness with which Sir Chris has lived and admire his view than anything can be achieved with determination self belief.
