I enjoyed following the life and troubles of Sadie. The sense of family and friendship was very strong and various relationships of trust, love and genuine concern was a wonderful touch. The only thing I found slightly off putting and ruined the immersion for me was towards the end which was round the war part and it was explaining French places and German words. It would loose me quite often.
At the start when she is a nanny and meets Nathaniel, immediately I'm like 'yep here we go a first love interest' (when it amounted to nothing I was gutted. I also felt very sorry for Sadie and her lost loved ones along the way, the tragic accident of her first husband Asher puts her in financial difficulty with bringing up her first child and coping in the world. Woolf, an artist and friend of Asher, then comes to her rescue and supports her even though their joining is more of convenience than that of love. This soon becomes clear and they separate. Later in Sadie's life I love the fact she got with Nathaniel as I liked his personality form the start. I felt genuine sadness when he ends up passing away in French prison simply from helping people during the war with forged papers.
