This story was a compelling and emotional read. Both Tessa and Dirk had faced tragic losses when their spouses died. Dirk also lost his daughter. These two were doing their best to take things day by day in their lives, yet they both carried around emotional weight for different reasons.
Dirk and Tessa were exactly what each other needed. And Dirk was also able to connect with Tessa’s son, Grayson, who was having an especially difficult struggle with anger related to losing his father. I liked the way Dirk approached things with Grayson and how he was always trying to listen and stay alert to how he might help him.
Both of these characters brought light back into each other’s lives. Tessa and her boys helped fill the loneliness that Dirk had become so accustomed to. And Dirk helped Tessa release things back to God, so that less of the burden remained on her. They both had issues to work through and bumps to overcome as they began to fall for each other. But even though this story dealt with some very heavy topics, I felt full of hope and encouragement throughout the entire novel.

widow tessa wagner heads to her family ranch for her summer with her two boys. when her oldest son gets into a little trouble, widower dirk matthews and his mobility service dog molly are there to offer help. as they continue to spend the summer together, dirk, tessa, and her boys learn to face the past—and maybe, find hope for the future, too.
both tessa and dirk have tragedy in their past, along with some lingering guilt. their time together prompts important reflection, growth, and ultimately, healing, and it was sweet to see them learn how to face God with their questions and doubts.
an unexpected companion deals with some tough parts of life, but it filled with hope and possibility, nonetheless. fans of inspirational contemporary romance could easily enjoy it (especially if you love visiting hope crossing).
(i received a complimentary copy from the author. i was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions i have expressed are my own.)
considerations: —language: none —spice: kisses only —faith: mentions of God and prayer —content: grief, guilt, disability, mentions of suicide and death
I'm a real sucker for stories with service dogs, so I was pleased for the opportunity to read An Unexpected Companion. This is such a relatable story, of widow/widowerhood, troubled children, second chances, and renewed and strengthening faith.
Dirk and Tessa can relate to each other like no one else they know, since they both lost their first spouses. Grayson especially tugged at my heart as he moves through his grief and confusion and misplaced blame over his father's death. He reminds me of my oldest son when my first husband and I split up. Such a load for a little boy to carry.
A favorite quote: It's time for you to accept the past and embrace the future God has for you. Not always an easy lesson to learn.
If you enjoy contemporary Christian fiction, second chances, with a ranch setting, grab yourself a copy.
I received a complimentary copy. These opinions are my own.
I wasn't quite sure to expect as this was my first Mindy Obenhaus' book, but I was pleasantly surprised. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Tessa, Dirk, and the Legacy Ranch. I loved that both of these characters founds way to better each other's lives. It was so heartwarming, that I did not want it to end. I related to Tessa so much as I'm only a couple years of older than she is, and while she had two sons, I have one. It was so easy to see myself in her shoes and navigating so many changes all at once. My heart actually ached for Dirk more, because while his loss was doubled, I always feel that men seem to hold things in so much more. I loved reading the journey that both of these character face and the healing and connection that came with it.
An emotionally-moving story from one of this genre's best authors . . . Realistic characters, an awesome canine companion, two curious young boys, and two adults who are still dealing with their own past traumas fill the pages of this inspirational story with faith, hope, and love.
Tessa Wagner and Dirk Matthews have a lot in common although they don't initially know that. When Tessa and her two young sons visit her family's Legacy Ranch for the summer where Dirk is renovating some buildings, their paths cross almost immediately.
Her eldest son, nine-year-old Grayson is a handful of bad attitude and mischief while he is still trying to adjust to life without his father who died two years ago. When Grayson is seen taking a valuable tool off of Dirk's truck, an awkward encounter follows. That's when Tessa and her youngest son, six-year-old Bryce, meet Dirk and his canine companion, Molly, a black-and-white border collie.
Since the tool is damaged and unusable, Dirk offers to have Grayson 'work off' the cost of buying a new tool. Tessa agrees, and through their day-to-day work on the building Dirk and Grayson begin to open up and they both benefit from their time together.
As the summer moves on, it is apparent that Legacy Ranch is a great place for the boys and Tessa. Lots of outside activity time and time spent with their great-aunt and the ranch animals cause the two boys to begin hoping that they can live at the ranch after summer break is over. Tessa begins to feel like a move from the city to the ranch would benefit her little family, and she formulates a plan of action.
As always, a strong point of this book is the author's strong faith thread woven throughout every chapter. This simple fact is one of the reasons I enjoy reaching her stories, but there is always much more for readers to relish—multi-dimensional characters, unique settings, nature, humor, and in this book we have the delightful addition of Molly.
This story is completely clean in language and content. I received a copy of this book from the author as a member of her launch team. All of my opinions and thoughts shared here are solely my own.
This book is a warm, comforting read - perfect for a slow spring day. Dirk Matthews has already faced unimaginable loss, yet he leans on his faith as he builds a quiet life with his service dog, Molly. Tessa Wagner is still struggling with her loss, and her nine-year-old son, Grayson, has uncontrollable grief evidenced by his outbursts and issues at school.
This story is a slow burn, letting emotion sink in naturally. Dirk makes me smile with his thoughts about Tessa and the boys. If Tessa could hear his thoughts, she would throw herself on Dirk. Tessa has tried to take her life into her own hands and has stepped away from letting God remain in control, unlike Dirk, who is letting God lead the way.
Even though I haven’t faced this kind of loss, I felt pulled into Dirk and Tessa’s journey. Their emotions are raw and real. I loved watching their story unfold.
This book has messages of hope and healing, but it also speaks the truth - hope and healing don't mean forgetting. It shows that with a new path forward, the hurt can lessen and allow new things to flourish. For all fans of Mindy's and those who want to see the power of following God's will, this is a must-read.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from the author. All opinions are my own.
I enjoyed this story of hope and second chances! I could only imagine what it would be like to be in Dirk’s position, with learning to live and adjust to the loss of a limb. Then there is Tessa, who is having to raise her children after the loss of her husband. I liked how things came together for them to get to know another better and for Dirk to have a chance to influence Grayson. This is a wonderful story to pick up and enjoy! I received this book from Just Read. This is my honest review.
I have read almost all of Mindy’s books. There’s only four still on my TBR of her backlist, I think. This one is my new favorite of all her releases I have read so far. This story captivated me from the first pages and I devoured this story. It has fantastic characters and one of the best storylines I have ever read from the Love Inspired line and I have read my fair share of LI books over the years. I am excited to know that some of the other supporting characters in the book will get their own stories over the next few months. Loved this one!
I received a copy of this book from the author and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
An Unexpected Companion by Mindy Obenhaus is an emotional yet comforting story. It’s a story about hope and healing after loss. It’s about risking your heart to take a second chance at love. But mainly, it can be summed up in this quote from the book, “Questioning God’s sovereignty can be exhausting. But trusting him brings hope.”
I really loved this book. It touched my heart in so many ways. Tessa and Dirk both lost their spouses, and Dirk lost his young daughter as well. Tessa and her sons spend summers with her aunt at the ranch Tessa, her sisters, and their aunt own. This summer, Tessa is met with a surprise when she finds that her aunt has been doing some renovations, and Dirk has been helping her out.
Tessa and Dirk were able to relate to each other’s pain and able to talk about their losses. They didn’t have to feel as if they were burdening someone who can’t understand their type of grief. One of Tessa’s two sons was able to heal from his anger and grief by helping Dirk renovate a cabin on the ranch. Anger is something that is really hard to work through when you lose a spouse and your kids lose their dad. I know this first hand. After years of asking God why, Dirk was able to trust that God still had a plan for his life. There was a reason God didn’t take Dirk’s life in the accident that claimed his wife and daughter. God always has a plan, and the author clearly weaves this message throughout the book.
I loved the well-developed characters, the beautiful setting, and the message that trusting God is the only thing that brings hope. I highly recommend this book!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I would highly recommend this book to all my friends. It was a sweet story of hope, love, and healing. I loved all the characters, but I especially connected with Tessa, a boy mom like me. I loved watching her inspiring story of being such a wonderful mother even amidst hard times. I was inspired to love more, my kids, my family and even my amazing dogs who understand more than I think they do. I have wanted my amazing dogs closer to me after reading this book. I’m off to snuggle all my people…yes my dogs too💗.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.”
This sweet story really pulled me in. It’s a slow-burn romance, but every moment felt worth the wait. I couldn’t help but get lost in the story, wanting to see Dirk, Tessa, and the boys grow closer with each day. Dirk’s character was truly special, so kind and caring toward Tessa’s sons, especially with Grayson, who was angry and grieving. He brought new life into their world. All the while, I was so focused on how he was helping Tessa, I almost missed how she brought laughter back into his life and gave him a sense of purpose, showing him the possibility of a future.
I gave this beautiful story a 4.5, rounded to a 5!
This story is so heartwarming. By the end, I couldn’t help but tear up, but in a good way. Dirk is mourning the loss of his family, while Tessa and her sons are grieving their old life and the loss of her husband. In one summer, they lean on each other so much that they begin to heal in ways they never thought possible.
What you’ll find in this story: - Widow/widower - Service dog - Family bonds - A beautiful ranch - Home renovation - Healing
I received a complimentary copy, this review reflects my honest opinion.
AN UNEXPECTED COMPANION by Mindy Obenhaus is the 31st book in the K-9 Companions series. The series is by several different authors and each is totally amazing in its own right. This is the amazing, heart-tugging story of Tessa Wagner, Dirk Matthews and the Legacy Ranch.
Tessa is a 35-yearold second grade school teacher, widow and mother of two sons. During summer break she’s taking her two sons, 9-year-old Grayson and 6-year-old Bryce, back to the family ranch. She’s hoping that some relaxing and fun times will help them all become the loving family unit they once were – before the death of her husband and their father. Tessa’s husband returned from Afghanistan with a traumatic brain injury. Refusing to get mental help, it eventually led to him committing suicide. While it’s been hard on them all, Grayson’s been the one that’s shown such a drastic change in personality with burst of bad behavior and sulking. Tessa’s been unable to make a break through with her son and is hoping the trip back to the ranch will help.
Dirk lost his wife, 4-year-old daughter and the lower part of his left leg in a car accident. He was the one driving and has always felt it was his fault. He still wonders why God took everything dear to but left him behind. Thanks to therapy, the love of Molly - his black & white border collie K-9 service dog, and his faith, he’s made great progress. However, he still believes he doesn’t deserve to be truly happy. He’d rather staying off to himself and is content working on the restoration of old buildings.
D’Lynn Hunt had been co-owner of Legacy Ranch along her brother, the girl’s father. Her brother never had much interest in the family ranch that has spanned several generations and never saw the point in changing anything. Whereas, she loved the ranch. It always been in her blood. Aunt Dee, to Tessa and her 3 sisters, had moved in with them after the death of their mother to help raise the girls as their father climbed the ladder in Houston’s largest real estate firm. She’s been like a second mother to them. After her brother’s death, his part of the ranch went to his four daughters. Dee is hoping that the girls will agree with her on plans for the ranch that she’s been dreaming about for some time – to refresh and renew certain parts of the ranch in hopes of eventually opening up the ranch to paying visitors. In that hope, she’s hired Dirk to work on the old original cabin on the ranch.
Will being at the ranch help Grayson’s attitude? When Molly seems to read Grayson emotions, it is possible that her training will have her helping him? Can being back at the ranch be exactly what Tessa was needing? Will the sisters see Aunt Dee’s vision and agree to it? Is it possible that a bad action by Grayson might actual turn into a purpose and a friendship? Can that friendship lead to the truth coming out about the cause of his actions? With Tessa’s and Dirk’s similar past, can they relate to the other’s situation more than anyone else’s been able to? Can that understanding build a friendship and maybe something more? How can it when Tessa will be returning home in a few short weeks? Dare Tessa take actions on a dream she’s aways had? Can all the years of watching home shows on TV actually pay off helping Tessa in renovating part of the main house on the ranch? Can finding the much sought after shiplap have her moving faster and doing more?
AN UNEXPECTED COMPANION is an exceptional touching story of two people hurting from the past finding understanding in the present from someone that has been there themself. Dare they dream about a future – together! Mindy Obenhaus brings us a story of healing, understanding that grief comes in all forms and has no set timeline, secrets aren’t always good and can often times fester if kept to oneself, comfort can be as simple as a furry K-9, respect of one’s ancestral past – both physical and emotional, second chances, that dreams can come true – but only if we take action on them. The author wraps it all with a fabulous thread of faith that proves God is always with us. Often when we think He’s abandoned us, it’s because we have turned our back on Him. Love this quote by Dirk (P. 67) – “Questioning God’s sovereignty can be exhausting. But trusting Him brings hope.” AN UNEXPECTED COMPANION is a must read FIVE STAR story!
Although part of the series, AN UNEXPECTED COMPANION can most definitely be read as a standalone book. After reading it, I am sure you will be checking out more books in the K-9 Companions series as well as other books by Mindy Obenhaus.
I receive an ARC of this book with no requirement or expectations of a review. All opinions are completely my own. #AnUnexpectedCompanion #K9Companion #loveinspired #inspirationalromance #MindyObenhaus
An Unexpected Companion by Mindy Obenhaus With his dog by his side… Is a second chance within reach? After losing his family and his leg in a car crash, widower Dirk Matthews dedicates his solitary life to woodworking and his mobility service dog, Molly. That is, until a troubled kid steals from his truck. Desperate to reach her grieving oldest son, widow Tessa Wagner agrees to have the boy help Dirk work on her family’s ranch. Only she doesn’t expect her own connection with the carpenter. Soon they’re feeling more than the shared loss of loved ones. But will past heartbreak stand in the way of their future? This is Tessa Wagner, Nick, her husband and sons Grayson and Bryce's story. This is D’Lynn Hunt Aunt Dee's story. Aunt Dee, to Tessa and her 3 sisters. This is Dirk, Lindsey, daughter Emory, Matthews and service dog, Molly's story. Tessa Wagner and sons Grayson and Bryce go to Legacy Ranch for the summer. “We’re almost there, guys.” Anticipation pulsed through her veins. God, please let this summer make a difference in Grayson’s life. In all our lives. Seemed the older she got, the more she appreciated the ranch. But at Legacy Ranch, her burden didn’t seem so heavy. Though that could be because of her aunt. D’Lynn Hunt never let life get her down. She simply rolled with the punches. “And I’m so glad you are.” Her smile wide, she wrapped Tessa in a warm embrace. “I always miss my girls.” Releasing her, Dee turned her attention to Grayson and Bryce, who were showering Nash with affection. “I’ve missed my boys, too. Come here, fellas.” Dropping to one knee, she opened her arms, nearly toppling when the boys eagerly complied. While Dee was Tessa’s father’s sister, she was more like a mother to Tessa and her sisters, Meredith, Audrey and Kendall. I’m just having a little work done at the log cabin.” Dee opened it and waved the dog inside. Then paused, peering through the opening. “Dirk?” “Afternoon, Ms. D’Lynn.” The male voice was followed by the sound of boots ascending the porch steps. Her aunt glanced from him to Grayson and back. “Is there a problem?”
“I’m not sure. Molly—” he gestured to the dog “—and I spotted this young man at the cabin.” He nodded in Grayson’s direction, his biceps straining the sleeves of the gray T-shirt that topped his dusty jeans. “When I asked if he needed help, he claimed his mom owned Legacy Ranch and then ran away.” He turned his attention to Aunt Dee. “Since I haven’t seen him before and—to my knowledge—you don’t have any children, I thought I’d best check things out with you.” “Dirk Matthews—” she closed the door “—this is my niece Tessa, and her sons, Grayson and Bryce. They’re visitin’ for the summer.” She turned her attention to Tessa and the boys. “Dirk is doin’ some work at the cabin.” I recommend this book. An Unexpected Companion by Mindy Brock Obenhaus is a wonderful 5 star book. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions shared here in this review are my own. I am looking forward to reading more books by Mindy Brock Obenhaus. K-9 Companions Book 31: An Unexpected Companion by Mindy Obenhaus
This my first book by this author and it won't be my last. I have always enjoyed Loved Inspired books and have read a few now with working canines now. This time Molly is an emotional and physical support dog for Dirk who we learn lost his wife and daughter to a crash and wears a prostatic leg. He is still dealing with his grief and working as a contractor on Legacy Ranch.
Tessa also knows heartache as she is now a widow with two boys, Grayson and Bryce. Grayson is 9 and angry with the world. They are headed to Legacy Ranch which Tessa is part owner of with her sisters and Aunt. Tessa and Dirk meet when Grayson steals an item from Dirk and to pay it off he has to help Dirk. We see often Molly offering support and comfort to the one who is hurting and at this stage it's Grayson.
I enjoyed how this story is written and plays out. The author doesn't hide the issues with losing a partner and highlights how often the ones who help most are in the same situation. Neither is looking for a new relationship they are enjoying the fact they found someone who understands. We also see how words spoken in grief or anger where they can be misheard can affect the person hearing. Especially if this is a small boy who is too young to understand fully what is going on.
Aunt Dee is a delight in this book, she is a strong woman who comes out with some funny lines. There is a lot more I would love to talk about in this book but it would give away spoilers. However I did enjoy the ride. It is an easy read and flows well. I see there will be more in this series and I for one am looking forward to them especially to Tessa's oldest sisters book.
If you enjoy Contemporary Romance with a faith element and with service dogs this is a book I am sure you will enjoy.
Before learning of this book, I was already a fan of Mindy Obenhaus as she is the author of one of my all-time favorite Love Inspired books, A Future to Fight For, a story about a couple renovating an abandoned castle.
Mindy Obenhaus’s tagline is, “Faith, Family, and Happily Ever After”. From what I can tell, each of her books are about families rather than just couples.
An Unexpected Companion is a story of a family finding their happily ever after. As you can tell from the cover, it’s also a K-9 Companions story and features a service dog. The children and the dog play a strong role in the book as does the heroine’s aunt.
The characters are all kind folks dealing with tough issues. These are people who have gone through difficult times and are each in need of a little happiness and love.
An Unexpected Companion is set on a ranch in Texas. Though ranches are popular in Love Inspired books, it’s not my favorite setting. However, Ms. Obenhaus did an amazing job of bringing to life the Legacy Ranch. I loved the house, barn, cabin, and bunkhouse, the hillbilly swimming pool, and their swimming hole. I was excited about their renovations to the older buildings and their plans for the ranch.
If you’re looking for a feel-good family story of love, check out An Unexpected Companion.
Welcome to Legacy Ranch and An Unexpected Companion. Y'all, I am super excited about this series. What a kickoff! Plus this one is part of the K-9 Companions books, too. Win-win (insert hands up emoji here)! Widow and teacher Tessa Wagner arrives at her Aunt Dee's Legacy Ranch with her two young sons for their annual summer visit. Her 9 year old has been struggling emotionally and showing behavior challenges since his father's death, and Tessa hopes this summer will be good for his heart...for all of theirs. Widower and former architect Dirk Matthews is remodeling and refurbishing one of the buildings on the sprawling ranch. When young Grayson Wagner steals, and breaks, a tool from Dirk's truck, he begins to work with Dirk on the cabin each day until the tool is paid off. Hearts of several people are weary and heavy laden, but as the summer goes on, they all might just find the rest the Lord has there ready and waiting for them all. This story is touching and beautiful. It brings a tear and a smile. I read it in one day. Devoured it, really, as I do all of this author's books. I also really enjoyed the nod to her previous series by the mention of nearby town Hope Crossing. Fun! Plus it has my favorite, an epilogue! Grab a snack, something to drink, and a cozy blanket. You won't be getting up from the first page to the last. I received a complimentary copy of this book, but my opinion is entirely my own.
I really enjoy Christian Romance books and LOVE Inspired Brand is a WONDERFUL series of Books. An Unexpected Companion by Minday Obenhaus is Book 31 in the K9 Companions series. I have read several books in this series and I have enjoyed them all. I really love that the series is written by various authors and many authors that I read on a regular basis.
WOW, another GREAT LOVE Inspired Book in the K9 Companions series! The 2 main characters in this book are Dirk Matthews and Tessa Wagner. Dirk and his Mobility Service Dog, Molly, are constantly together. Dirk was in a car accident and had a leg amputated and he is also a widower. Dirk enjoys doing woodworking and making things on the ranch. Dirk is shocked when he learns that a 9yr old boy stole and broke something from his truck. Tessa Wagner is a widow and raising 2 boys, 9 and 6yrs old. Tessa is encouraged when Dirk offers to allow her 9yrs old to help Dirk on the Ranch during the Summer. I LOVE that Dirk recognizes that the young boy needs encouragement and guidance from a male and not discipline. The growing relationship between Dirk and Tessa is very heartwarming. Dirk had planned on living alone after the death of his wife and daughter, so seeing him take a liking to Tessa and her sons was heartwarming. The book is one of Faith, Second Chances, and Encouragement. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who loves Christian Romance. FANTASTIC BOOK!
This book had the perfect combination for me of faith, romance, and depth. It told the story of two people who have both had their world turned upside down by tragedy and loss. Dirk lost his wife, young daughter and sustained a life altering injury in a horrible car accident. Tessa’s husband was deployed and returned home with a brain injury that changed him. Now she is trying to help her children navigate their grief following his death.
This story shows their journey of resilience, healing, hope and second chances. Dirk and Tessa grow closer as they are able to understand each others feelings of grief and guilt. Not only were they able to connect, but he was able to help her older son who was acting out process his grief and confusion as well.
I liked that the romance was not rushed. It developed naturally through their friendship and shared experiences. It felt real as they got closer, and leaned on each other more which strengthened their bond. I enjoyed the different characters, and was happy to see this was the first in a new series . Molly, Dirk’s service dog, was a help to all of them. I’d love to have her by my side providing comfort whenever I was worried, anxious or struggling with my emotions! This book will touch your heart. I received a complimentary copy of this book, but the opinions expressed are my own.
An Unexpected Companion by Mindy Obenhaus is a sweet story. I enjoyed getting to know Tessa and her kids, Grayson and Bryce as well as Dirk and his mobility service dog, Molly. Tessa’s aunt was a delight. Molly is a sweet dog who knows when someone needs her. I liked seeing Tessa, Dirk, and her boys grow closer over the summer. I felt for Grayson who obviously had something that was troubling him. I enjoyed the beautiful descriptions of the ranch and the buildings that Dirk is renovating (I want to live in the converted cabin). The romance is the slow burn type which suits the story. Both Dirk and Tessa need to overcome the past before they can embrace the future. Faith is woven throughout the story with scripture and insights. An Unexpected Companion is a story about healing, forgiveness, family, love, hope, and forgiveness. I hope we get to visit the ranch again and see one of Tessa’s sisters find the right individual for them. While An Unexpected Companion is the 31st book in the K-9 Companions series, it can be read as a standalone. An Unexpected Companion is an emotional tale with summer retreat, a sullen son, a guilt-ridden widower, a kindly aunt, ranch renovations, holding onto hope, and a friendly canine.
Here in this story, we have characters who all have been hurting since the death of their loved ones. Widow Molly and her two young boys, Grayson and Bryce are still reeling from the aftereffects of the tragic loss of their father. Meanwhile, widower Dirk is trying to move on with life after an accident stole his wife and daughter and part of his leg. He and his service dog Molly have decided to work on a ranch. That ranch that belongs to Tessa's aunt, and the ranch she and her boys will be staying at for the summer.
The adults in this novel are very mature especially in dealing with their situations and issues. I liked that they were very sensitive to one another, but especially to the young boys. This story really showed how even though they all carried around a very similar pain, it at times can feel that individually you are all alone. This was an emotional read of two hurting families, who find hope in new beginnings with one another.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.
I loved reading this Love Inspired Inspirational k9 companion story! Tessa and her sons Grayson and Bryce, return to Legacy Ranch in Texas to visit Tessa’s Aunt Dee for the summer. After the death of her husband, Tessa thought returning to her hometown and “mother Dee” would be the perfect thing to help her and the boys have fun and heal from their pain. While helping Aunt Dee around the house, they meet contractor Dirk and his service dog Molly who has also had his share of trauma and pain.
Along the way they both find love, hope and healing as they work together on the ranch and navigate new feelings of family and acceptance. I liked the faith element of the story and one of the things that Aunt Dee said was that “We serve a God of second chances…” Sometimes it can be hard and scary to have faith and believe in second chances in life.
I found the characters engaging and relatable, and loved seeing the vision of the ranch and the repairs unfold. I hope there will be other Legacy Ranch stories that will include Tessa’s other sisters.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions and views expressed are my own.
Unexpected Companion begins with much loss, and it’s evident that there is much-needed healing from the first chapter. Tessa has recently lost her husband, her boys have lost their father, and Dirk has lost a portion of his leg and his family.
Dirk and Tessa each see someone who understands what the other is going through, thus infusing hope that they’d feared would never return. I was charmed by the characters and the poignant moments that gleamed brightly amid many happy moments.
Like all Love Inspired novels, this book has a laidback feel, and there were moments I could almost feel the Texas sun shining down on me. Reading this truly does feel like coming home.
With both charm and heart, I felt all the feels while connecting to these characters and this world on a deeper level. For it being a shorter story, I felt character depth and the overall flow was flawless. The K-9 Companion series continues to bring me so much enjoyment, and I am living for it.
*I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own.
Mindy Obenhaus writes a heartwarming story with good characters, good storyline, and a good message. This is a second chance romance for both main characters. This is the start of a new series. It is the first of several trips to the Legacy Ranch and introduced the four sisters that the books are about. Book 1 is Tessa’s story.
Tessa Wagner is a young military widow with two young boys. Her oldest, Grayson, has been acting out for the past year. She is hoping that spending the summer at Legacy Ranch with her Aunt D’Lynn will be good for her and her boys.
Widower Dirk Matthews is leading a solitary life working with wood and carpentry and is working on remodeling a cabin on Ms. D’Lynn’s property. Dirk and Grayson have a “run in” resulting in Grayson working for Dirk.
Molly is a mobility service dog that plays an important role in the story!
Couple of good quotes: “Questioning God’s sovereignty can be exhausting. But trusting Him brings hope.”
“Just remember, the thing about a gift is that you have to be willing to accept it. Otherwise, both the giver and the receiver get cheated out of a blessing.”
I thoroughly enjoyed this story of two grieving people finding comfort in each other. Because they had suffered tragedies so similar, they could understand each other and their souls were comforted. Tessa and Dirk had lost their spouses and there were some similar elements. Dirk is working on Tessa's aunt's ranch, When Tessa brings her boys to the ranch for the summer, Tessa's son steals something from Dirk and when Dirk finds a solution that will help straighten out the troubled boy, Tessa is thrilled. The beginning of hope shines in both Tessa and Dirk.
I loved getting to know everyone on Legacy Ranch! Tessa's aunt, her boys, her sisters and of course, Dirk! All the characters were wonderful! The author also paints a wonderful picture with her description of the ranch itself! I wanted to jump right into the book and swim in the swimming hole or the "hillbilly hot tub"! I also wanted to attend the 4th of July celebration! This is a lovely story of how to overcome loss, forgive yourself and start anew.
Two hurting hearts find unexpected understanding and healing, and perhaps even love...
Dirk Matthews has been living a quieter life after tragedy took his family and his leg, but he still stays busy remodeling older locations into something new and innovative with his mobility do by his side. When a boy steals from him, he works out a deal with the boy's mother to have him work with him to make it up.
A touching story, with great relationship building, themes of family ties and legacy. Dirk is great with Tessa's boys, and they love his dog, Molly. Dirk and Tessa makes a great team, they both have lived through great loss, and I liked how they both had great support systems in their families.
Overall, a heartwarming read, with compelling characters. A great introduction to a full cast of wonderful characters that I hope each have their own story in the works. A touching story of new beginnings, faith, family and love. Highly enjoyable and satisfying read.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I loved this new K-9 Companian book by Mindy Obenhaus. I usually love all the k-9 companion books & this was no exception. Dirk Matthews & Tessa Wagner are given a 2nd chance of love after enduring tragedies of their own. I liked how they both seemed to come together naturally. It started out as friendship & them sharing their past griefs & experience into something more. Dirk also was able to help Tessa’s oldest son deal with the death of his father. Who could forget Molly the service dog? She was there to help all who needed her. I loved all the other town folk & I definitely would loved to live in Dirk’s house. Though Dirk had lost one leg in a car accident that took his wife & daughter, he was able to not let it keep him down. Both Tessa & Dirk showed tremendous strength dealing with their losses. I loved how they found each other. It’s a tremendous story that had me crying tears of happiness & sadness. I loved the epilogue so much. It’s a wonderful book that leaves you with hope.
She's a widow with a 9-year-old son and a six-year-old son. He's a widower who lost his wife and daughter, and the lower part of his left leg in a car accident. Tessa & Dirk meet at Legacy Ranch, where he is remodeling a cabin for her Aunt D'Lynn. Tessa and her sons are there for the summer.
Grayson, Tessa's oldest son, is troubled by something connected to his father's death, turning him into a child she doesn't know. Grayson steals a laser measure belonging to Dirk, breaking it and lying about taking it.
Tessa insists he work with Dirk to pay for a new laser measure. As the summer goes by, Grayson opens up to Dirk about what has been troubling him. And Dirk shares this with Tessa, who is shocked.
Instead of returning to the school in Houston where she teaches, Tessa applies for a position at Hope Crossing school. In order to find out more about Tessa, Dirk, Grayson and Bryce, you really need to read this book.
An Unexpected Companion is an engaging, heartwarming story of adapting to life after a traumatic loss amid feelings of guilt. Dirk not only lost his family, he also lost part of his leg. He has his service dog Molly to keep him company. Tessa lost her husband and one of her two sons is acting out in his grief. Tessa hopes a summer at the family ranch will help. Dirk is working at the ranch and offers to have Tessa's grieving son work with Dirk in an effort to help her son. Tessa and Dirk find a connection, not only through her son, but also because of their similar feelings of grief. Will guilt and memories keep them from a future as a family?
You will want to read to discover all the ways these two and the boys, with Molly's help, work through their losses, learning to enjoy life again. Tessa's Aunt Dee is a wonderful mother figure and adds so much to this story. I strongly recommend this book. It is a page-turner! I received an advance copy and all opinions are mine.
Grieving and loss are the powerful topics that author Mindy Obenhaus addresses in An Unexpected Companion. Young widow Tessa had two young sons to love and comfort through their family's season of loss, but Dirk's grieving was for both a wife and daughter! Watching Dirk and his mobility service dog Molly form a bond with Tessa's troubled son, Grayson, was especially gratifying. Was Dirk helping nine-year-old Grayson, or was it the other way around?
Warning Statement: Tissues may be required for this story! It is sometimes raw as we watch these two adults adjust to their loneliness, but their budding friendship appears to be God's Plan in action! Grab a copy of An Unexpected Companion for an uplifting story of hope, grace, new beginnings, and second chances. It's also an engaging invitation to more visits at Legacy Ranch! I recommend it to all who enjoy contemporary Christian romance.
I received a copy from the author and publisher. There was no obligation for a positive review
