I'm 40% in and this book is not only excruciatingly dull but so badly written I seriously started to wonder if it was AI generated.

The characters in this book do not speak like human beings, but rather like extremely stilted, overly formal, stuntingly polite androids. The dialogue seemed more in keeping with the sort of incredibly basic stuff you see in a language learning book:

"Hello, my name is Angel, do you like fried chicken?"
"Hello Angel, my name is Nathen, I am pleased to meet you. Yes I like friend chicken."
"I have made you some friend chicken. Here it is."
"Thank you for making me fried chicken. I have eaten it. It was delicious."
"Thank you for eating my fried chicken. I enjoy making fried chicken. Do you like iced tea?"
"Yes I like iced tea. Thank you."
"I shall bring you some iced tea."

On and on. It's fucking WEIRD.

Along with this mind numbingly shit dialogue we'll be given an overly detailed scene wherein Angel opens the cupboards, get the plates out, turns on the stove, fetches a pan, open the cooler, gets the chicken, fries the chicken, pours a drink, arranges the food all on the plates, walks over to the table, puts the plates down, fetches napkins, puts them down, goes to fetch the drink, put's those down.

There is also this plot about 6 + people who have gone missing in the swamp, presumably at the hands of a serial killer, and it's treated as a bit of a 'meh' non event. At one point we're told the story got a brief mention buried on page 3 of the local paper, and another time some of the main characters are discussing that their *friend* is one of the missing people but they talk about it like it's a bit of boring, everyday nothingburger that's barely worth paying attention to. The heroine hand-waves it away as 'ahh it's fine. I'll be fine'. Has the author not lived in the real world where an ongoing serial killer story is HUGE fucking news and sleep little Crystal Cove would be inundated with police, press etc. But no. It's a sleep small town bit of nothing news that nobody remembers half the time.

Now I'm 40% in and the hero and heroine are still having superficial, overly polite, boring as fuck conversations about what flavour of ice cream they like best, and believe me when I say they go on and on and on. Who cares?

I'm actually a little stunned this got published. It must be AI right? Right??

This novel had great ambiance, and it did a fantastic job describing both the lush beauty, and the danger, of the swamp. The mystery/suspense was pretty good and held my interest. And of course the interpersonal dynamics, both love and friendships, made the characters endearing. However, what happened with the dialogue??? It came across as incredibly stilted and repetitive. It got to the point where the characters were actually repeating each other’s sentences, and I don’t think anyone uses the other person’s name that often in conversations. I am a fan of Carla Cassidy, and am quick to snatch up her books, but the dialogue in this one fell very flat. Now, with that being said, I found out that this is the first book in a trilogy, and I just so happen to have all three books! I’m excited, because, despite the dialogue issue, I did enjoy the story - and I also like that the over-arching mystery has not yet been solved and will lead in to the next one. Time to see which character gets their own story next!

It was not my favorite story. I was expecting a lot more crime, murder, and death, yet this seemed to focus more on how our main character lives out in the swamp and falls in love.
I felt the writing was mediocre, and I only finished it because I wanted to see who was behind the murders. I still don't know who was behind the murders. I assume it was the person who left the voodoo doll, but I don't know. I wish I could say I loved this story as I do like anything that deals with the swamp and murders. This book just completely fell flat. The writing fell flat.

Loved this book from beginning to end. Ms. Cassidy had me at the edge of my seat. Nathan is a photographer and wants to capture photos of the swamp, and that’s where Angela comes in. He wants to hire her to be his tour guide. A lot of danger lurks, and he wants to protect her. She’s a strong woman and doesn’t need any help. Until she does. She is a skilled fisherwoman. But it’s not safe. She needs to lay low.
See what happens.

Good mystery. I was not sure who the culprit was but I was rooting for Nathan and Angela.
