Rate this book
A sizzling mafia romance kicks off this heart-stoppingly sexy spinoff series by Men of Haven author Rhenna Morgan.

“Morgan’s hot first NOLA Knights contemporary pulls out all the stops...perfectly balances deep emotions and tense suspense.” —Publishers Weekly

His world. His rules. Her love.

When it comes to protecting what’s his, Russian vor Sergei Petrovyh's never been afraid of relying on rougher methods. That’s never been more true than when the gorgeous Evette Labadie asks him for a job. He knows enough to keep his hands off someone as beloved by the locals as Evie, but there’s something about her that calls to him—begs him to make Evie his and his alone.

Don’t think Evie hasn’t noticed the powerful Russian mafia boss who makes her favorite diner a regular stop. How can she not? He’s as hot as his reputation is dangerous. But everyone in her struggling New Orleans neighborhood knows he’s the man to turn to when backed into a corner. And right now she needs money to get her son out of trouble.

Her other needs—needs she knows damn well Sergei can more than satisfy—will have to wait.

Evie soon finds herself playing Cinderella to a man who can't get enough of her. She can’t help falling deeper in love with each passing day. But when a turf war between Sergei and a rival brings violence to her doorstep, Evie must come to grips with loving a man who will do anything to defend her…or walk away from her best chance at a happily-ever-after of her very own.

His To Defend is book one in the NOLA Knights series by Rhenna Morgan. This new series is a spin off of Rhenna’s Men of Haven series. But, you do not need to have read Men of Haven in order to enjoy this.

Sergei Petrovyh is the head of the mafia in New Orleans. Sergei was born in Russia but came to New Orleans to start his own family, meaning his mafia family. Sergei is a beautiful man. But one look into his eyes and you see the darkness within. He is both respected and feared. Revered and reviled.

“You tangle with Sergei Petrovyh, there’s no telling what you’ll be in for.”

Zander Bleck as Sergei

Evette (Evie) Labadie grew up in New Orleans. With both parents gone, her only family is an uncle she greatly dislikes, and her godmother whom she loves with all her heart. Evie has a seven year old son, Emerson. Emerson is a very serious child, a child who seemingly has forgotten how to be a child. He is also the center of Evie’s world. When it is recommended that Emerson attend a very expensive private school, she knows she’ll do whatever it takes to get him there. Even though she was just fired from her job.

Keira Knightley - Evette Labadie

Sergei uses the diner Evie’s godmother owns to do business in. Because from his booth, he can watch Evie, the woman who has become the center of his interest. Until the day she actually approaches him and speaks with him.

“She was an angel and he was the devil. Two sides of the spectrum fated never to meet. But a man can dream.”

Evie needs a new job if she is going to secure the school’s high tuition for her son. She’s seen Sergei in the diner many times and has to admit that he’s a beautiful man, and a dangerous one. She has no choice, though. She needs a job. So she goes to Sergei for help.

“Fight it as long as you need to. Watch and learn if that's what it takes. But your days of being alone are over."

new orleans estate

Sergei knows what he wants and he will get it. Every cell in his body screams, “Mine.” He will prove to her that she belongs with him, that her son belongs with him. He will protect her, he will provide for her, he will love her.

Being who he is, Sergei’s life is not without danger. Bringing a woman and child into his life puts a target on their backs. There are those that will go to great lengths to get to him.

“She was his weakness. The delicate chink in his otherwise insurmountable wall. But she was also his redemption. His absolution, greater purpose and color in another otherwise drab and monochrome world.”

Goodreads | Recent Updates

This book was amazing. Sergei was everything we can hope for in a hero. He was strong yet loving, rigid in his business but flexible with the woman he loves. He was perfection. This was the perfect mix of sweet, sexy and suspense. I could not put it down. I was a huge fan of the Men of Haven series and have been so excited for this series. And Sergei was definitely worth the wait.

“He’d touched the sun. Claimed it for his own. And he wasn’t giving it back.”

This was 100% my kind of mafia book. I like that dark, anti-hero who still behaves honorably and protects what is his at all costs. To me, that's the perfect bad boy persona, that right amount of balance between dark and light.

The minute Sergei was introduced in the Haven Brotherhood series I knew I wanted his story. He's one of those characters that captures you from the start and holds you captive. Despite his hard exterior, he never once treated Evette badly. Nothing will win me over faster than that.

As heroines go, Evette was a great mix of sweet and strong. She's a single mom who has lost a lot in her life and yet she never let that dim her light. She's outgoing, friendly, well loved and has a backbone. She was the perfect match to Sergei.

I really like that Sergei was honest with her about what kind of man he was and what he has done. I also really like that Evette took that seriously. She didn't just blindly follow. She thought things through and trusted her instincts.

This couple was such a pleasure to read about. We got quality time of them together and they never behaved immaturely or rashly. No unnecessary drama here. I truly can't wait to see what this author brings us next in the series.

I love the way this author writes heroes! The icing on her already delicious cake is a heroine that is just as wonderful. Sergei and Evette were awesome individually and together. Add a seven year old boy, and a Cinderella type feel to the story and this book was a winner!

description

Evette dealt with life’s harsher realities by losing herself in wild actions which resulted in an unplanned pregnancy. Since then, she’s buckled down and even if she’s not living her dreams, she’s determined to give her son stability in every area of his life. That determination is what motivates her to approach Sergei Petrovyh, the boss of the local bratva and a man that catches her eye each time he’s in her vicinity.

Sergei is expecting her to request a loan so when she asks if he can direct her to a job, he’s thrown off course. For just a moment. Because within the next heartbeat he’s crossing every line he mentally drew when it comes to the neighborhood’s darling.

”Much as he’d honor and savor the touch of someone so light and good, the darkness in him was too thick. Weighted with too many bodies and tainted with too much blood to be worthy of such a gift.”

He’s been watching her for a while and has battled his own desires but when she takes a deliberate step into his life he’s going to run with it. He intends to keep his distance, but when her sun shines even brighter in his darkness, he’s staking his claim.

description

Evette was a wonderful heroine with her fierce independence, her loyalty, her parenting habits and her ability to evolve when it came to Sergei’s darkness. She lands in a bit of drama that pertains to Sergei’s business but instead of trying to keep it a secret, she does the adult thing and communicates with him. There was never a too stupid moment although it could have easily gone that way. I loved that that wasn’t her way of dealing with things. She was always up front and honest, especially with herself.

As for Sergei, he won me from his very first appearance in the book. The fact that his every thought and action was affected by Evette and Emerson’s presence in his life made me love him all the more. His tender regard, insight into what each was feeling, and total “mine” attitude when it came to both of them skyrocketed him to perfect book boyfriend status. I loved each time we had his point of view because it cemented what his actions and comments highlighted…Evette and her son were his everything. And he shows it non-stop. Swoon. He was freaking amazing!

”If we continue on as we were, people might misinterpret your place. Today, we are making it clear to everyone and anyone who might be interested exactly what that place is.”

“Well, would you mind telling me? Because things are a little hazy from where I’m standing.”

His demeanor shifted in a second, the amusement and patience he’d shown swept away in the space of one gasp as he cupped the back of her head and tugged her flush against him. “Mine.”

description

This has a great pace to it, slow on action despite the bratva life, heavy on possible danger, sizzling in the chemistry department, and perfection when it came to the epilogue. The secondary characters were just as wonderful as the hero and heroine and they added so much richness to the story without ever stealing the show. I cannot wait to get more in this series!

Highly recommending this one to anyone who enjoys bratva/mafia tropes without the dark, heavy feel that can sometimes overshadow the romance contained within.

I'm pretty torn here....

His to Defend started out so well! Very interesting m/c's, a cute kid and a completely believable premise. I found myself looking forward to my walk everyday so I could listen to more of Sergei and Evette's story.

But then around 40% or so things started to go downhill for me.

This is my second book by this author and reading it has made two things clear to me:
(1) Rhenna Morgan is a very decent writer, but
(2) Rhenna Morgan and I don't share a compatible sense of romance
Once their relationship got going, Sergei took over EVERYTHING, which left Evette a bystander in her own life. Literally, she could have stood silently in the corner for the last half of the book and it would have made NO difference. I mean, come one, Sergei even

Now I love a good alpha, but once the dominance leaves the bedroom in a contemporary romance, I start to roll my eyes.

However, Sergei's intentions were all good, so I can see how this story would appeal to a lot of readers. And on top of that, the overall plot arc was really well done.

I'm pretty torn here.....

Yeah, I know, I already said that.

In the end, I have to round down because first and foremost I'm here for the romance. Happy reading, everyone!

What a good surprise this book was!

This is my first book by Rhenna Morgan and I enjoyed every minute of it. I already knew it was right up my alley when I read the blurb, but we all know that a lot of things can go wrong from there. And I have to say that I was not disappointed. This book is not only well-written but fresh and downright entertaining. The plot flowed smoothly from page to page and the characters were well defined and spark to life from the very first page.

Evie was sassy, determined, and compassionate, and really stayed true to herself. Sergei was sexy, caring, protective and domineering. Their connection was strong, their chemistry combustible and they were the perfect fit for each other. I absolutely loved how Sergei interacted with Evie's son, Emerson! The little boy was a delight to read about. This book charmed me, and I will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from this author. Overall rating : A solid 4 stars!

I received this book for free from the publisher (Harlequin) as part of their bookstagram publicity campaign.

This is the first book in a new spin-off of Rhenna Morgan’s Men of Haven series. If you haven’t read that series you can still read this one as a standalone. Some characters from Men of Haven do make an appearance but it is not imperative that you read their books first. I’ve only read the last book in the Men of Haven series and was able to enjoy this book just fine.

This was a great contemporary alpha male romance. I’ve never read a book about a modern day mobster so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but I ended up loving the dynamics.

description

I loved how protective Sergei was of Evette and her son, but also how sweet he could be. Evette was a nice leading lady. She had spunk and I loved that she was honest with Sergei. A lot of times in romances, characters will not tell the person they’re dating about something super important and all it does is just create unnecessary drama. Luckily this book does not fall prey to that. Evette was smart!

Overall, this was a solid to start to a sexy new series and I am looking forward to reading the next installment.

4.75*

I loved this book.

When I started reading I fully expected this to be a 3* read. I liked the blurb but I honestly never expected this to be so good. Plus I’m a bit stingy with my stars. A book has to be something special to get more than 3* from me.
This is also a new author to me and I’ll be checking out her other books as soon as I’ve finished this review.

I loved everything about this. Evette is a strong confident hardworking single mother. Her seven year old son Emerson is her world and she’ll do anything for him.

Sergei is the ruthless pakhan. He’s tall, incredibly handsome, rich and powerful.

Evie is desperate and plucks up the courage to ask him for help finding a job. The rest as they say is history.

This is a fabulous read. Sergei moves Evette in as his housekeeper but he wants more. The attraction sizzles between them. But can Evie let go of her past enough to move forward with her future.

I’m off to find Knox and Darya’s book now.

2,5 ❤️🤔⭐️s

I was excited from the blurb but in the end I was not thrilled.
It was supposed to be a mafia romance, since the hero was a mafia boss, but action had a small part in this story.
Sergei and Evette’s romance was not convincing enough. Especially from Sergei’s pov. Everything was happening too fast between them, he was far too possessive and protective from an early stage and calling Evette “my bride”, spoiled the mood for me even more.

I have heard many positive things about Miss Morgan. With that, I am encourage to pick up audio book of one of her book. His to Defend is my first read by Miss Morgan. I have to say, this kinf of story reminds me so much of Sawyer Bennett. Likeable, mediocre and sometimes like warm romance. The theme is not dark nor light. Just stay in the middle.

His to Defend is confusing for me. There are some aspects on this book that I can not connect. What is the attraction between the hero and heroine? For me its more like insta lust and suddenly insta love. I also can not connect with Sergei despite his broody and mysterious character. It seems he is mafia with nothing dangerous. The twist and the plot is confusing.

The sex is also cold. I think it tries to be BDSM but falls flat. I have to admit I have to skip some of the sex scenes because it is so boring.

Overall I am disappointed with the book.

Spoilers ahead

When Evie's parents died she had a breakdown where she started drinking heavily, she woke up once after blacking out realising she'd had sex but not knowing with whom. One month later Evie is pregnant , she doesn't let that hold her down. she's determined to do the best for her child, seven years later Evie's son is a gifted child and needs to go to a different school that'll challenge him more. Having just been fired Evie turns to new big man on the scene Sergei. It's known around town that Sergei is the one to go to for help but it's also clear that there's more to the Russian than simple businessman. While Evie has noticed and been attracted to Sergei the entire time they've not really soken until she approached him for help

Sergei has relocated his business to New Orleans, while he sees Evie and is attracted to her he knows he'll never taint her light with his darkness....until his beautiful angel steps into his world. With Evie working in his home Sergei realizes that she may not be quite as opposed to his darkness as he thought.

*************
I enjoyed this one as is, for the most part, the usual with this author. Sergei is the type of hero I love.....bossy bad ass who may be hard to everyone else but was a sweetheart to his bride. I was afraid that he wouldn't live up to his badassery but he delivered on his threats to defend his woman against all comers.

Evie too was my kinda h, she was independent but not overly stubborn, she was kind and loving but no doormat and she more than held her own with Sergei. When things started wrapping up in the end I really thought this author would lead Evie down TSTL Lane but thankfully she trusted Sergei and brought the matter to him.

There were a couple things that unfortunately lowered my rating a bit-

I got that Emerson was gifted but he was 7 going on 18 and that stretched things a bit too much, I also found that Evie didn't do enough when her son started hanging around with boys so much older than he was.
I wanted more time between Sergei and Emerson, one of the joys of a single parent romances for me is seeing the child build a relationship with the new adult in their life and I didn't really see that here
I also felt like I didn't get to really know Sergei, like we skimmed the basics of him. Just like we have random Russian thrown in is just the same way we got randoms about Sergei added when I was really looking forward to knowing a bit more of my sexy Russian badass
Certain aspects of the story weren't properly concluded, so much was made of Evie going on the shopping trip but then nothing but a mention in the epilogue that she'd grown close to the Haven women which honestly felt awkward. The boys who were spying on Sergei too, disappeared. I understand they were minors but what happens when Emerson goes back to school if Sergei didn't straighten them out?
We're told that Sergei and Evie had been eyeing each other a while and we know Evie hadn't had sex after the incident that conceived her son but......what about Sergei? In the time he was eyeing his sunshine was he with OW? Enquiring minds wanna know!

The badass showdown where the bad guys including Evie's slimeball uncle were dealt with which was a highlight for me 😂. Too many times author's claim guys are badass and then fail to deliver....not my man Sergei he took care of the threats to his woman.... I'd have liked someone to say that "they were sleeping with the fishes" but that's just me 😏

All in all even with my issues I've got mad love for this author and always preorder her books. I'm hopeful that she continues to remain on my tiny, tiny author's I trust list and look forward not only to Sergei's guys stories but also the rest of the men of Haven especially Ivan who I confess to having a crush on 😂. Waiting with bated breath because really 2020 isn't THAT far is it ?😭

h last had sex when she conceived her son which we later learn she was drugged by her vile uncle
No details on Sergei except he'd always used condoms
Absolutely no cheating and No OW/ZoM drama

2,5 stars but not 3

This book is a spin off of Rhenna Morgan’s Haven Brotherhood series. I loved that series so I wanted to try this book although I don't like mafia romance that much. That's why I had the same trouble with this book as I always do with such books. I can't make my peace with killers. Knowing that the person you love is a dangerous man who kills people when he thinks it is necessary is not a notion I have been able to come to accept. That's my trouble with all mafia romance books. I know the heroes are always so very protective and possessive with the heroines in that books and they love their woman fiercely. Still, although I like protective and possessive heroes, I just can't help but think what they do with people who they want to disappear.

I am not trying to be a moral police here, I know it is fiction but I am just trying to explain why my grading of mafia romance is always on the lower side. I nearly always deduct a point from the "hero" because he is a killer.

*********************************************

As for this book, it is just a mediocre mafia romance with nothing special in it for me. It is told in the 3rd person point of view. Maybe because of that, I never felt the connection between the hero and the heroine. Or I never felt the love or chemistry between them because it was way too fast.

She needs a job to be able to give her son a better life and education and asks for his help. He gives her a job in his mansion and in a month, he says she is the one for him. "I love you"s and "Be my bride"s are flying in the air all too early...

He is 100% sure he wants her and her son in his life but she is a bit hesitant. Although she sleeps with him, she is hesitant to take things further this quickly. It takes a bit more time for her to accept him as he is - all parts of him, the good and the bad.

*********************************************

The hero, Sergei, is Russian. He had appeared in Knox and Darya's book in Haven series (Book 4, which was a 5-star read for me). And it was a nice surprise to see my favorite characters, Knox and Darya in this book.

Evette is a single mother whose only living relative is her uncle, who later turns out to be one of the bad guys. There is some mafia action going around towards the end.

All in all, the book was a bit boring for me.

Also I need to say this... I love that when characters use nicknames for each other. They are usually endearing, sweet or funny. But Sergei calling Evette "My bride" for most of the book got on my nerves for some reason.

As for safety, there is no OW/OM drama; no cheating.

If you are into mafia romance, there is chance that you may like this book more than I did. I was just never able to get connected to the characters so I never felt invested in their story.

You might remember Sergei from Tempted & Taken, and now he's back for his own HEA. Evette has been drooling over Sergei for a while, and when she and her son need help she asks Sergei for help. He helps her and falls in love with her. Sergei doesn't do anything halfway, and getting his woman is no different. Evette is unsure about falling in love with him and being the wife of a Russian mobster, but in the end of course, Sergie wins her over.

I'm hoping the next two books are his sergeant-at-arms, Roman and Kir.

I've had this book waiting to read forever, I don't know what took me so long to get to it. I really love Rhenna Morgan's sweet, sexy alpha men and the bold, take-no-shit women they meet their match in. These guys are alpha with a capital A, and they magically *it seems* walk the razor edge of being dominant, possessive and protective while still being sweet, caring and making everything their woman's choice. I seriously don't know how she does it.

And hooooo-boy, *fans self* Sergei is aallllll that. Russian Bratva making his own new family in New Orleans, he's watched Evette since he arrived. But she's all sweetness and light, as well as being the neighhood darling, and Sergei is a bad man. He doesn't want to taint her goodness by touching her. Added to that, he wants to make a place here in NOLA by doing good things for the locals, helping where he can while also establishing his business. So Evette is off-limits. Until she's is forced by circumstances to seek help from Sergei. And he knows as soon as she asks for his assistance that he will not be able to resist any longer.

Evette has lost the people she loved most in her life, both her mother and her father, leaving her only her mother's best friend Dorothy and her wastrel, shady Uncle Carl. After their deaths, she lost herself for a while, only to get back on solid ground when she ended up pregnant. Emerson is now 7 years old and he needs help that she's in a desperate situation to give, so she turns to Sergei, for her son.

And help her he does. As a matter of fact, Sergei goes above and beyond what Evette asks, and she's grateful but a little bewildered. What she doesn't get is what Sergei has already decided, LOL. She will though. 😁 And Sergei is delighted when Evette has PLENTY to say about that. Her boldness is something he likes and they are so much fun to read.

One of the things I like most about this series and the Haven series it comes out of is family. Family is a central part to every story and all these characters are connected and important to each other. They have each other's backs, no matter what. Sergei, and his men, who are also family, are there for Evette and Emerson the same way. However, Sergei is Bratva and while a lot of what he does is for good, the solutions that are sometimes necessary are something that Evette has to decide if she can live with, for herself and her son.

Sergei's Haven family shows up here as well and I was really happy to see them. I hope they keep making appearances throughout the series. I love them all. 😊

The mafioso aspect of the story is always there, in the way their daily lives are lived and in Sergei's business dealings, but the bad guy situations are very sparse, so the wiseguy feel to the story is largely absent. While I really love a well done mafia tale, I don't mind that not being the focus here. This is all about the characters and the romance, and that was wonderfully done. I'm definitely here for that! 💗

Sergei Petrovyh is the head of the mafia in New Orleans, and is in the process of getting rid of his competition/rivals. He is also a man who protects those in the neighbourhood, when Evette (Evie) Labadie, the woman he has been drawn to from the first time he saw her, comes to him for help in order to ensure her son gets all he deserves, Sergei is more than ready to help. Telling himself to help but keep his hands to himself, he soon finds himself unable to keep his distance and is determined to make Evette and her son his.

Happily surprised by this, didn't have any of the unwanted misogyny and idiocy found in a lot of mafia romances, the primary focus in the book is on Evette and Sergei. That being said the shift from insta-lust to love needed depth and layering, for me it didn't, so even though I enjoyed the read and can see myself possibly re-reading, the romance isn't one that will be potently pulling me back to re-read this, it's not one that has left a lasting impression.

I liked Evette and how she hadn't lost her spark despite all she had lost/endured, but in the latter part of the book, I wish Evette had been more of a active participant in what was happening, especially when it came to Emerson.

Uncle Carl was a absolute despot,

This was really cute and I loved Sergei! Evette got on my nerves a little bit, but Sergei made up for it. I love how there was no drawn out unnecessary drama. I also have to give BIG props to Evette for not being an idiot h and not telling the H when someone is threatening her! That sort of thing frustrates me to no end so I’m glad it wasn’t done here.
The only reason I didn’t give a full 5 star is because if the epilogue. It was cute, and everyone will probably love it. However, I’m selfish and I wanted more! If you’re looking for a cute easy read, then this is for you!
SAFETY: no ow/om drama at all!!🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

That time I picked up a Netgalley book and preceded to be a slave to my kindle until the very last page!! YOU GUYS! Rhenna Morgan's His to Defend completely rocked my world. I legit DIED for Sergei and Evette and seriously could not stop reading! This story was sexy and emotional and SUCH an amazing read. I seriously was hooked on every word!!

Anyone who knows me know that Mafia stories are my jam! I am SO obsessed with Bratva stories it isn't even funny. Add to that a single mother who would burn the world down for her child? SIGN.ME.UP!! Evette and Sergei were so fiery! I loved their connection and how honest they both were with each other. He was bad and made no qualms about it but she saw the loyal and avenging angel behind his devilish facade and stood by his side. Likewise, I loved how protective and caring Sergei was to both Evette and her son. I seriously loved EVERY word and am SO here for this series!! Now I need more ASAP!! Bravo! 5 stars! ~Ratula

This has been a heavily anticipated book for me. After reading the "Men of Haven" series by this author, we all knew that the Russian needed his own book. AND WE GOT IT!!!!

Sergei Petrovyh is what you'd call a "Pakhan" in Russian. He's the leader of his Mafia and he's created his own family. No one messes with what's his and he makes sure that everyone knows it. After moving to New Orleans and settling in, he's slowly helping the community, making it a better place. Although his methods may not be...conventional, he does what's needed to get the job done. Which is probably why he considers himself dark and unworthy of affection.

Evie has a lot on her mind. She's been let go of her job for something she didn't do and is now desperate to find work quickly in order to pay for her son's education. While visiting her friend in a diner, she can't help but wonder if Sergei could help her. It's worth a try, right?

Evie pretty much steps straight in to a Cinderella story. Everything is way too good to be true, but yet, it is. She even becomes Sergei's "Feya", which only leads to...well...everything. Now all she needs is for her uncle to leave her alone.

As usual, this author pulls you in to a story that keeps us on our toes with every turn of the page. Between building relationships among the main characters or introducing new ones, we form a bond with them as though they're OUR friends. That's quite the talent.

This is an amazing start to a series that I'm sure will keep all of us coming back for more...and more and more. Because let's face it, a Mafia full of hot Russian alphas is quite the craving. :)

My review is about the audiobook version.

I decided to try this because it was on one of those "best audiobooks" lists. John Lane is the narrator and I absolutely enjoyed his voice.

The story is about Yvette who loses her job because of a security issue. Someone used her card and accessed an area she did not have clearance to be in. A spot has opened up at a prestigious school in the area and she wants to send her son Emerson there but she needs $900 by Monday. She asks around to see if anyone can hire her quickly and is turned down even by her friend Dorothy. She decides to ask Sergei, the known mafioso in town and her life changes forever.

Sergei has always eyed Yvette from afar when he sees her in Dorothy's restaurant. He's surprised when she approaches him but also low key estatic. She explains her situation and he hires her to run his estate. There are some stipulations but Yvette agrees. Over a span of weeks they begin to know each other better and eventually their chemistry explodes over. Then the past intrudes and some secrets come out and Sergei has to release the darkness some and hope Yvette still looks at him the same by the end. (spoiler: it's a happy ending)

I really enjoyed the audio. I listened on my drives to and from work. I'm American so I'm probably wrong but his Russian accent was great. He weaved the story that got all up in my feelings. Sergei's protrayal was so perfect. He was an honest man who would do anything for the people under his protection. He didn't tolerate lies and he didn't give them and expected the same in return. There were no illusions about his dark past and it only emphasized who he is today. Yvette was perfect for him. Also the steam level was hoooot!

If you're into romance audiobooks, give this one a listen.

***5 ‘Inevitable’ Stars***

After meeting Sergei in Tempted and Taken I crossed my toes that we’d see more of him again and, as you can probably guess, I was all kinds of excited to hear that the toe crossing had paid off and couldn’t wait to get my hands on his book and it was everything I wanted and more. So. Much. More. It was all kinds of swoony, smexy and funny, add in a nice little mystery/suspense and a quite a few new characters I really want more of (as well as a getting a tinsy bit of time with old favs) and I got a book I didn’t want to end and when it did, it left me NEEDING more.

Sergei. Talk about being Alpha AF goodness! He is a Bratva boss in every way that counts, but the man also has a strong sense of honor and has a heart that is a lot more golden than most would ever believe. Evette has all kinds of moxie going on. She’s sweet, sassy and fierce and has the innate goodness that draws you in and makes you want to spend time with her and hope that some of it rubs off on you.

The journey to their HEA was a lot of fun from start to finish. I loved how, despite outward appearances, perfectly matched they were. Sergei gave Evette, and Emerson, the security they needed to flourish, while Evie gave Sergei a safe place to just be Sergei the man and not the Bratva boss. Their bantering was on point, the smexy was HAWT and I loved how they accepted every aspect of what made them who they were without exception.

I’m a #fangirl of the authors, have been since picking up the first book in her Eden series and I truly love all the words she puts out into the world. This book was simply a great read. There is a bit of a mystery/suspense thing woven into the story, and while I guessed at one part of it, I was definitely not prepared for ALL of it when it was revealed. The Bratva lifestyle plays heavily in the story, it is not a dark romance in any way, though there may be some things that may be considered triggers but nothing gratuitous.

As for the supporting cast of characters. I loved Dorothy, Olga and Emerson and how they really brought out the family dynamic in the story. And then there are Roman and Kir. It will be obvious to those who know my preferences why I favor Roman over Kir, but the margin is a slight one and I cannot wait to get my hands on their books!

This is a spinoff of her Men of Haven series, and though I do highly recommend reading the series if you haven’t already, you do not HAVE to before diving in this baby. As for me,I love how she kept that tie to it alive in little ways throughout the story, and hope that will continue as this series progresses.

💋💋💋

I will first say that the book is an enjoyable read .
The characters are believable and intriguing.
The storyline was good to , Tense romantically and due to danger lurking.
The general overall book I enjoyed, it had a great feeling to it that was something that kept me reading , wanting to know the end result.

However in places it lost its rhythm , this put me off .
I like a book to hold my attention throughout to grip me and not let go.

NOTE
Please remember that this is my personal view.
Look at other reviews to get an overall experience.

I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

I knew as soon as we met Sergei Petrovyh In Tempted and Taken that I wanted his story. I knew this sexy protective Russian was going to be my favorite. When I found out it was based in New Orleans with all its atmosphere and flavor just made it even better. I’m gonna be honest most Mafia Romance is just not my cup of tea. There are a few good ones out there but most just no thank you! This is one of the best books I’ve read this year and I read a lot. I just love a Alpha Take charge hero and nobody does that better than Rhenna Morgan. Evie is a strong woman taking care of her son. Sergei is a temptation she doesn’t need. Some temptations are just to hard to resist. The twist at the end was just crazy. If you haven’t read The Men of Haven books and now this spin off what are you waiting for. Your definitely missing out.

4.5./5.0

Surprisingly addictive mafia romance! Surprising because I’m not usually a fan of this type of storyline.

So why did I love it anyway? Because the author never allowed the storyline to fall into the expected and predictable. Everything most stories of this kind would put into play (girl going through all the angst and denial about her “horrible” suiter, stupid choices made to “protect” others, huge angst driven drama etc. etc.) never happened! It was AWESOME!! Sophie was a fabulous heroine who had common sense and always thought things through to come up with the smartest answers for her and her child. She never sank to emotional outbursts and impetuous decisions that make readers roll their eyes. LOVED that!

And, of course, it being escapist fiction, Sergei can be a hero while also being a mafia boss. Although he lives the life, he also has a core of compassion and wants to build strong, good, family neighborhoods where thugs and gangs can’t rule... yeah, so he rules instead but... the people don’t mind paying a bit of protection money to have a lovely place to raise their families. See? Probably not realistic but sure a lot more fun to read in a romance. :)

The only downside is that I REALLY need to actually hear the big three words coming at least once from the main characters mouths in order to close the book truly happy.

Thanks to netgalley and Carina Press for the opportunity to read this book (ARC).

I love this kind of contemporary romance novel! You have a strong heroine and a genuinely good guy who likes the heroine and does not see her as an object.
The child of the heroine was quite advanced for his age, in terms of his level of maturity. I am pretty sure that was intentional but I prefer kids acting like actual children.
The story IS about Evie who is in dire circumstances financially and how she manages to get a job to work for Sergei and that is how their relationship starts, there is a side mystery story but the main focus is on the couple. The relationship between the hero and the child was believable and I liked that they both respected each other!
Its a 100% safe no other women drama.
I give it a 4.5/5!!

His To Defend is the FIRST book in this author's newest series "NOLA Knights" and I can't tell you how excited I was to learn that this author was starting such a exciting series. Those who know me know how much I ADORE this author so very dearly. And I bore no hesitation in picking this book up, I knew it would be packed with so much goodness and let me tell you ladies and gents.....IT WAS!! Mafia-type romance isn't for everyone but this author handled these elements so well. Now I wouldn't call this dark romance, I knew some may term it because of the mafia/mob boss connections that we do see but it didn't have a feel to it that led you to make the determination that it's darker. However, it really is determined on how you view romance. For me ....I have read Dark Romance quite a bit in my reading experiences so this book doesn't even come close to others.

In His To Defend, we begin the story with our heroine, Evette, who is a single mother and when she learns that she is going to need much more  in funds to give her son the education he deserves at a more private school, she is becoming desperate having just lost her main job. While visiting a close family friend at a diner, she comes up with an idea, to go up to the infamous and dangerous Russian vor Sergei Petrovyh. When she reaches out to him for a job, a sexual attraction is much obvious between Sergei and Evette. Sergei has worked hard to build a life in the States. He left his old life and brought those he considers family and is working on building his territory. When he sees Evette reaching out to him, he doesn't know if he can resist Evette. She is the opposite of everything that he is.....kind, loving, hard-working and full of grace. But once Evette starts working for him in his home, he realizes he won't be able to let her go.....she brings peace and is a true gift and will protect her at all costs.
She was his weakness. The delicate chink in his otherwise insurmountable wall. But she was also his redemption. His absolution, greater purpose and color in another otherwise drab and monochrome world

This was such a beautiful love story that Rhenna Morgan tells to us in this book. To be honest, I didn't even glance at the blurb---that is how much trust I have in this author and she definitely didn't disappoint. I was on the edge the whole time I was reading this book here. I will say that this book was simply superb in every way and oh the romance in this book was so well written. The characters are beyond compelling from our main characters to Evette's seven-year-old son. And we do have a plot of mystery and intrigue that develops here that you don't quite see coming at first. I was highly compelled by this story in that we see the romance that forms between Sergei and Evette. Evette is such a strong woman and she isn't afraid to stand up to Sergei. I truly did appreciate that about her. He needed that, someone that will and does very often stand up to him because he is an alpha male and they need a firm hand at times. But I truly appreciated how these two care for each other in different ways.
Yes, he was a predator. A wolf barely contained by the human confines of flesh. But she sensed something else beneath as well. A lost soul. Once aching like everyone else.

Overall you can't go wrong with "His To Defend" a truly remarkable romance which leaves you breathless, eager for more and fully satisfied in every way you can imagine!! SENSATIONALLY PORTRAYED!

"His To Defend" by Rhenna Morgan

"His world. His rules. Her love" is what "His to Defend" was all about. I thought this was quite a beautifully well-written story that his author gives the reader that will keep you turning the pages to see what was coming next. What will happen when Evette Labadie asks Russian vor Sergei Petrovyh [Russian Mob Boss] for a job? Truly Evette's life will change quite a bit for her and her son Emerson. This story was well put together as the reader will see how Sergei and Evette come together. Why did Sergei feel that he must protect Evette ad her son Emerson?

The 'alpha take charge' person that Sergei was really showed how much he wanted to take care of Evette and her son. It will be a good story of seeing just what all Sergei would do in protecting the ones he loves.

I loved how well Evette was the type of person who was 'single, strong-minded, and quite sassy' who gave much thought of her life and her son Emerson, especially after she had gone through quite a battle with her life after the death of her mom. But after starting to work for Sergei would she be able to avoid the temptations that he so readily offers? Want will happen as Evette begins to trust and understand Sergie's world that he presents to her? I will say that I did enjoy several of the characters... Dorothy, Tony, Reggie, Kir, Roman, Darya and Knox and a few others all that added to the story.

The ending was quite wrapped up nicely as Sergei will do as he said and that was to protect those he loved. I will stop there and say if you enjoy a good romance you will need to pick up "His To Defend" and see for yourself how well this author brings this story out so well for the reader.

Sergei & Evette stoke my heart, and of course Emerson too :)

Like in Knox & Darya’s story where we first meet Sergei when he comes charging in, he charges into Evie’s life. (after she asks for help!) From there, our story really unfolds and the first book of the NOLA Knights was a huge success.

Rhenna’s writing and storytelling is simply unparalleled. I was sucked in from page one, and the suspense in this one kept me hooked.

It’s worth mentioning that I also already love Roman & Kir so it’s safe to say this series is going to be epic.

It’s also safe to say i have no lost love for Uncle Carl ;) This story was full of twists and turns I didn’t expect with Evette’s family. Sergei’s pet names and all the Russian really heightened the sensuality of the read for me- Feya, liubimaja, swooooon over all of them!

Read this on ladies you won’t regret it!
