I listened 🎶 to these individually each story line is different with interesting well developed characters lots of action and misdirection leading to each unexpected conclusion. I would highly recommend this series and authors too readers of paranormal fantasy adventure mystery novels 👍🔰. 2023 👒😀😡😮
These side stories just increase my love for the vampire for hire series. I can't seem to get enough of them. I love the series so much that I'm now listening to every audio book in the series. Yep I'm definitely deeply addicted and invested.
I read this entire 15-book (so far) series back-to-back for the last couple weeks, plus quite a few short stories that relate. Free on Kindle Unlimited. It's a great series for a fan of paranormal mystery. The set up is that a mom in California was changed into a vampire in an attack. Fast forward several years and she's struggling with a failing marriage and raising 2 kids with her day time disability. As the years progress, her marriage fails, her kids mature, and her relationships with love interests/ friends/family grow. The characters are relate-able, there's a little humor, and very entertaining mysteries with interesting treatments of magic. Solidly fun reading!
Before reading these short stories i finished a series by J.R. Rain and definitely prefer the longer ones. Never the less these were good enough to finish in one sitting. I have already bought another full book length one to start next. Guess I like this author, huh?
Each story reveals a little more about Samantha and how she thinks and feels. She meets a colorful array of characters and not all of them living. I am looking forward to more.
Several stories from the Samantha moon, vampire for hire. The creation of Fang was well conceived, and quite realistic, placed at the end for dramatic purposes. The mystery author the least interesting.
I loved it! Short stories always make me wish there was more. Although I admit I can't get enough of Sam as it is. These all have a beginning, middle and end so they're very fulfilling.
This is in chronological order (according to the author), not the order they are in this book. The number is where it fits in the series. BTW: half of these are not short stories but just brief scenes and ideas. The longest is ‘Vampire Gold’ at 30 pgs., but they average 15 pgs.
‘Teeth’ 0.5: 20 pgs. 4 stars. A brief scene from Teeth’s past during a courtroom trial and gives us lots of details about him. Even though I feel sorry for him and he didn't deserve any of this, I still wonder how his mental health is now and if he’d okay enough to be in Sam’s life for real and not on internet. I can’t quite reconcile the online version of him with the court trial version. Maybe enough time has passed that he’s recovered. I hope so.
‘Vampire Moon’: Two deleted scenes from the novel: 1) 5 pgs. 2 stars. In the Prison Warden Office trying to ‘not explain’ how she punched through three inches of bulletproof glass. 2) 7 pgs. 2 stars. An alternate version of Ira’s ‘demise’. While this is interesting, it’s takes too long. I agree with the author, the printed version better. It’s more exciting.
‘Vampire Nights’ 2.5: 8 pgs. 2 stars. Ooookaayyyy. That was weird. Sam has a weird encounter with a ’homeless’ person in Denny’s. Very short without telling us much of anything.
‘Vampire Blues’ 4.4: 23 pgs. 5 stars. This one is so sweet I loved it. Sam gets a lesson in not making assumptions.
'Vampire Dawn’: deleted scene from the novel: 5: 10 pgs. 2 stars. Different ending with Sam going into the theater alone to rescue her sister. I like the original version better. This was a little too dark and I didn't like Hanner’s role.
'Vampire Dreams’ 5.5: 15 pgs. 3 stars. This is listed as 6.5 but as Sam is still investigating drained bodies it’s got to be during the events of #5 ‘Vampire Dawn’. So I put it as 5.5. Sam has a dream vision of a young girl being hit by a bus. Should she stop it? While an interesting scene, it’s not a good direction for the storyline to go.
‘Samantha Moon’s guest blog’: Occurs a year after ‘Moon Child’ which is the story of Antony’s illness. Since they’re both in the spring, I’m guessing as to how it fits. 2 pgs. 1 star. Very short, brief thought of Sam’s about her children.
'Halloween Moon’ 7.4: 23 pgs. 4 stars. Big time gap between ‘Moon Island’ in the summer and this one in the fall. Sam takes care of a neighborhood child killer.
‘Vampire Gold’ 7.5: 30 pgs. 5 stars. Sam is hired by the family of a crazy man to find a ‘pirate’ treasure he buried on Catalina Island. Interesting clues.
‘Blue Moon’ 7.6: 11 pgs. 1 star. Sam & Tammy in a Starbucks after cashing the check for ‘finding’ the Catalina treasure in ‘Vampire Gold’. This is the 2nd weird meeting she’s had with mysterious stranger. Not good.
‘Dark Side of the Moon’ 8.5: 29 pgs. 4 stars. Needing to get away from the events in ‘Moon River’, Sam decides to test the boundaries of how far, how fast and how high she can fly. And discovers a lot of answers. I’m glad this didn't get into a book, it’s just too far out there. (no pun intended).
Vampire For Hire -- The First 8 Short Stories by J.R. Rain
I'm a big fan of the Samantha Moon series, so, of course, I loved this compilation. It included 7 Samantha Moon short stories (all but 3 of which mentioned the requisite Judge Judy), and one short (Teeth) on the back story of the character, Fang. It also included a "Guest Blog" from the Samantha Moon character, and 3 "deleted scenes."
As a fan and follower of the series, it was fun to read the short stories featuring the Moon character. Each story was from a different time in the series, and reading each brought back memories of the novels which had come before. Sort of like a quick review of Samantha's journey into vampirism. The story "Teeth," was something I'd been interested in since early on in the series, when it became obvious the Fang character would be a continuing part of Samantha's story. In it, the reader gets a glimpse into the character's life before he became Samantha's confidant and stalker and why he originally became obsessed with becoming a vampire.
The deleted scenes -- which were scenes written for the series, but discarded because the scene, for one reason or another, did not take the character in the direction the author intended -- were an interesting glimpse into the writing style of Rain, and into his conscious development process for his character.
If you like the Samantha Moon series, there is nothing in this compilation you will not like. I was going to give it 4 stars rather than 5 strictly on the basis that these quick reads, based solely on their brevity, for the most part lack the deep immersion you get from the longer novels. One exception, for me, was "Dark Side of the Moon," which delved into the relationship of Talos, the creature into which Samantha can morph. It is an exquisite look at relationship and the nature of being between the two and gives the reader much information regarding not only Samantha's developing character, but about the creature's nature and purpose in her journey. That story got the complilation a 5th star, as it knitted together many of the character's loose strands.
I loved this series, especially being able to read the cut scenes that weren't put into the official published book. We get a sneak peak into the world of what writers do before publishing a book. And we also got a first look into why Fang was Introduced from the beginning of his story. Way cool.
